Arsene Wenger says Alexis Sanchez is as responsible as any other player for Arsenal’s capitulation against Bayern Munich last week.

Arsenal lost 5-1, but Chilean striker Sanchez was one player who appeared to emerge in credit, scoring the goal that gives Arsenal faintest hope of avoiding an exit at the last-16 stage for the seventh successive season.

“Watch the game again. I do not want to comment individually, but we have lost as a team and Alexis is part of that,” Wenger told The Times when asked if Sanchez, almost alone among Arsenal’s squad, had played well in Bavaria.

Sanchez’s contract with Arsenal expires at the end of the 2017-18 season, though Wenger’s future is inarguably the more pressing concern at Emirates Stadium. The Frenchman’s deal is up at the conclusion of this season, with reports suggesting his time could be up after more than two decades in charge.

Wenger’s team faces non-league Sutton United in the FA Cup fifth round on an artificial pitch in Surrey on Monday evening.
