Aziz Ansari Responds to Sexual Misconduct Allegations, Says He Has Taken Accuser's 'Words to Heart'

Aziz Ansari has responded to claims of sexual misconduct with a 23-year-old photographer he went on a date with in 2017.

Going by the pseudonym Grace, the woman recounted her experience with the Master of None actor in an interview with the website Babe Saturday. She claims that she felt pressured to perform sexual acts with Ansari despite verbally and nonverbally communicating that she was uncomfortable doing so.

In a statement to People Sunday, Ansari, who supported the Time’s Up movement by wearing a pin in support of the cause last week, acknowledged the woman’s experience and said he had taken “her words to heart.”

“In September of last year, I met a woman at a party. We exchanged numbers. We texted back and forth and eventually went on a date. We went out to dinner, and afterwards we ended up engaging in sexual activity, which by all indications was completely consensual,” said Ansari.

The statement continues: “The next day, I got a text from her saying that although ‘it may have seemed okay,’ upon further reflection, she felt uncomfortable. It was true that everything did seem okay to me, so when I heard that it was not the case for her, I was surprised and concerned. I took her words to heart and responded privately after taking the time to process what she had said.

“I continue to support the movement that is happening in our culture. It is necessary and long overdue.”

In the interview with Babe, the anonymous woman said the date with Ansari, 34, was “the worst night of my life.” They met at an Emmy Awards after-party in September 2017, exchanged phone numbers and agreed to go on a date.

The evening ended in Ansari’s apartment where, Grace claims, Ansari persevered in engaging in sexual acts with her, though she was uncomfortable.

The next day, she says, she texted him: “Last night might’ve been fun for you, but it wasn’t for me. You ignored clear non-verbal cues, you kept going with advances.”

Ansari reportedly responded: “I’m so sad to hear this. Clearly, I misread things in the moment and I’m truly sorry.”
