Discussion and Submission Guidelines

Welcome to the Newsweek Community

We welcome you to share your original thoughts and opinions about Newsweek stories and related news around the web in certain areas of our website. Please be polite and respectful: we are maintaining a safe and welcoming community space on our site that is enjoyable and interesting for all of our users. We also moderate many comments in our interactive forums to enable readers to share only informed, courteous and intelligent views that enhance the marketplace of ideas, focused to the topic of discussion not the presenter. We reserve the right, in our sole discretion, to remove comments at any time, with or without notice to the user. We also may remove a user’s privilege to post content on our site.

Remember: Real people are reading your words. You are responsible for the comments you leave on our site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does your commenting system work? Can I comment anonymously?
A: No, you cannot comment anonymously. You can comment on by logging in using your Facebook profile.

Q: Can anyone post comments on your site?
A: No. You have to be at least 13 years of age to submit any content to us. If you aren’t, please do not. If you are under the age of 18 but at least 13 years of age, you may submit content only with the permission of, and under the supervision of, a parent or legal guardian. If you are a parent or legal guardian agreeing to these rules for the benefit of an individual between the ages of 13 and 18, please be advised that you are fully responsible for his or her submissions and any legal liability that he or she may incur.

Q: Why should I comment on an article?
A: Think of the comments section of an article as a direct line that connects you, the reader, to both the author of the story and the Newsweek reader community. If you loved what you read and what to read more like it, let us know. If you didn’t, we want to know that as well. And if you have any questions for the author, feel free to use the comments section to ask. We encourage all our writers to participate in the community discussions of their stories.

Q: What kinds of comments do you encourage? What kinds of comments do you discourage?
A: You’re welcome to write anything and everything: You don’t have to be a professional to leave a great comment that sparks an awesome discussion or debate. As long as what you have to say doesn’t violate our community’s chief principle of respect for others, we want to hear it; we’re sure others do, too.

Q: Let’s say I read something I didn’t like, and want to share my thoughts. Can I be banned if they’re negative?
