Defendant Fatally Shot Outside of Mississippi Courthouse


A defendant was fatally shot outside of a criminal courthouse in Mississippi on Monday morning, a law enforcement official told the Associated Press.

The suspect, identified as 24-year-old William Wells, reportedly fired one shot with a semiautomatic handgun at Kendrick Brown, 37, in a small courtyard outside of the courthouse in Canton. Brown was shot once in the chest and died on the scene.

He was facing drug charges and was headed to court for a hearing when he was shot around 9 a.m. local time.

The suspect drove up to the courthouse in a maroon Toyota Tundra, according to local news.

Wells was arrested and is in custody at the county jail. No bond or initial appearances have been set.
