'Diablo III’ Nintendo Switch Rumors Claim Port is in Development

Diablo III light switch tweet that started it all. Blizzard

According to sources in contact with Eurogamer, Blizzard is developing Diablo III for the Nintendo Switch. The game will be a direct port of the bestselling dungeon crawler and, though their sources couldn’t confirm this, will most likely include the Reaper of Souls and Rise of the Necromancer expansions,. A representative from Blizzard had no comment on the situation, adding some credibility to the rumors by not denying them outright.

Rumors of a Diablo III Switch port  started circulating around the internet on ???? after an official Blizzard tweet showed a Diablo night light turning on and off. In the comments of the tweet, fans speculated about what a Switch version of the game would look like. Their hopes were squashed when a Blizzard spokesman told Polygon: “We can assure you we’re not that clever… [It was] meant to be a fun community engagement piece. We have nothing to announce.”

Nintendo is very secretive and doesn’t enjoy leaks, so it makes sense that Blizzard wants to keep development under wraps. Third-party Switch games are usually announced much closer to their release date, limiting speculation and overblown internet drama. Blizzard is also notoriously secretive with what they are working on, choosing to remain mum when Overwatch heroes like Doomfist and Orisa were leaked months before their official announcement.

Porting Diablo III to the Nintendo Switch has to be a difficult process. Nintendo already has a lot of uncertainty swirling around it’s online multiplayer capabilities, a core component of Diablo III. Nintendo also doesn’t enjoy satanic iconography in games on their consoles and that’s Diablo’s entire franchise identity. If Skyrim on the Switch had to tone down some of it’s blood, there’s no telling how much of Diablo III will be the same. I expect a much cleaner version of New Tristam if this port ever releases. There’s also a chance that Diablo III on the Switch will never see the light of day, wasting all this theorycrafting.
