Ever wonder what a hacker looks like? There will be at least several hundred gathered in New York City this weekend for a 48-hour convention called H.O.P.E., Hackers On Planet Earth. "This is the first time something of this magnitude has happened in the U.S.," says co-organizer Emmanuel Goldstein. Round-the-clock events include: a keynote address by a former CIA agent, panel discussions on topics like whether hackers threaten Net security and how-to sessions on hacking Unix workstations. There will also be a committee to "crack" the New York City subway card. Goldstein says, "By the end of the conference we'll know if it's a good system or not." Walk-in registration costs $25; send e-mail to email@example.com.
