Does it really matter? Regardless of IQ, the male is far more likely to commit suicide before finishing junior or high school, and in the last ten years, the suicide rates for males in elementary school has jumped way up. They are expected to do better than the girls, but told that if they do, it's because they have an unfair advantage. They are far more likely to drop out of high school, and if they graduate, not likely to get into college. He will take a job that is 700 times more likely to get him killed, than the jobs women take, but get told he cannot earn any more money than what the women make for doing those jobs.

So, knowing ones IQ is rather useless is you are male as you have little to gain from it, and will likely be punished for it the rest of their lives.

You folks who keep name dropping and bringing up the fact that there aren't as many women inventors, scientists and the like forget that throughout history women have been incredibly oppressed and forbidden to compete against men in areas like amth and science. Mots of the progress and leveling of the playing field have only taken place in the last half of the century. Most colleges and places of higher learning were not even co-educational until the last half of the 20th century.The same thing is true for African Americans, is it not? There have not been as many famous and other wise noteworthy inventors and scientists who were also people of color, but they had a bit of oppression to overcome too (like slavery). White men conveniently forget that for awhile you were the only ones allowed to be in the game. Excuse us if it takes a while for us to build our batting average, when for most of history, we weren't alllowed to hold the frickin bat!!!

BTW- I administer IQ tests for a living. Most of us school pscyhologists do not put much stock in the score on one single assessment. We usually corroborate data with additional tests. There is so much individual variation on intelligence tests. I have seen girls do wonderfully on tests of spatial ability and not so well in verbal areas, wheras I have also seen boys do lousy in areas of non-verbal intelligence. It really is quite difficult to generalize.

Intelligence, perceived or real, run the gamut from genius to retarded in both sexes regardless of what one thinks they are capable of. I don't think I am more or less intelligent then women, or even that intelligent, though I know I am not stupid. What I think of myself is not important. What others think of me is not important. I attempt to do something and I either succeed or fail. I might think I will fail or succeed and may do the opposite anyway. This is just media hoopla and a way to justify someone's big paycheck and to keep people reading magazines, web sites, newspapers, and other forms of fluff journalism, which this article is. It's like the paparazzi and the celebrities. Someone wants to get rich and someone wants a picture of someone and someone is willing to pay for that picture and someone is willing to do whatever it takes to get that picture and sell it so they can get rich. Princess Diana died so people can gawk at a grainy newspaper print of her doing something that isn't any different than the rest of the human population does. Greed, envy, idol worship, blasphemy, lust, murder, and every sin imaginable gets attention in every newspaper and magazine in existence. Research into this type of thing is what the apostle Peter warned about when he said people would gain "dangerous knowledge". There are some things that are better left a mystery and exploring such areas of knowledge is dangerous and blasphemous as well. Let well enough alone or you may someday wish you had kept your thoughts to yourself. Your paycheck isn't worth it. I am directing this at both the researchers, writers of columns like this, and the media that prints it. Beware of dangerous knowledge for it can be your undoing. Some things are just better left in the dark. It's like exploring abandoned ruins and it can all collapse on top of you before you know it. I may sound threatening, but I am just saying some secrets should remain secret, for you might not like what you find.

I'd have to agree with jessieraymond, men and women are pretty much leveling out now a days do to the opportunities that have just recently been given to them. (equal rights, ability to attend collages, etc.) The stereotype that men are smarter then women has only existed because of women being unable to learn, and go to school as openly as men have in the past. I'm not trying to bash on men, or stand up for women, but I mean seriously look at the clues. Since women have gotten equal rights, and have been able to work side by side with men, if they so please, they have started to catch up and run multimillion dollar industries as well as there counter part. And the reason that no one has really ever heard of bright women is because history has been written by MEN. Women have been looked down upon for hundreds of years, and for a woman to be smarter then a man or to be wiser then a man, back then was really unheard of because of the lack of education. Think guys (and girls) just cause that girl/guy next to you acts like they're dumb dosn't really mean that they lack inteligence, or the power to comprehend and keep up in academics, they just like to act dumb to hide the fact that they are smart so maybe people will not copy them or pester them for help. In my opion I think that those people are actually thinking on a higher level, or maybe like it is stated in the article above, they just lack the self-esteem.

There is an important aspect missing from his research- the comparison of class systems and education when discussing intelligence. I believe that there are plenty of people who have the ability to learn, they just don't have the same means or opportunity that others do. This applies to both genders equally when discussing that particular aspect of socio-economics. It seems though, that "stupidity" spans the board. A person can be a genius when it comes to computer programming, but may still enjoy base activities such as watching reality television or really bad movies. Also, a person's religious values and beliefs can prevent a person from acknowledging certain kinds of education. This does not necessarily make a person stupid, but it can make people believe in stupid things (the sun revolves around the earth, dinosaurs are fake, Creationism over Darwinism). This also suggests that "measured intelligence" verses "environmental stigma" (or lack of when discussing education) are two entirely separate things and in no way measure how much brain capacity that particular individual is capable of. Furnham's research concludes that men and women have about equal intelligence. What I am pointing out is in the same line as that thinking- that these factors apply to human beings as a whole and in general have nothing to do with gender at all. -RV, Silicon Valley
