Greetings and Blessings to all of you from pelayo; The study is powerful given it helps some of us recognize the power of notions and perceptions which eventually affects everyone: If we all know what the below comment (in quotes) claims we all know, then why even bother spending the time, energy, and effort commenting about things everyone is supposed to know, anyway? Redundant do you not think so?

"""Comment: Who really needs a study? Any reasonable person with more than a 2nd grade education knows that there is no superior sex and that men and women are equal in intelligence. The only significant "findings" in this study is that men over estimate their own intelligence. Well, we already knew that too!"""

It does not matter who you are.If you study hard you can be smarter.I think that men and women are at the same intelligents. But I would say that women are much more mature then men are!!

Then why are you taking the time to bring it up again?

given that humankind has evolved in a particular way for millennia where genders have been allocated different responsibilities and each gender exposed to tasks of specific natures, it follows obviously that some people will be better at some things due to social as well as genetic reasons. give everyone equal opportunities and see the results in a century. also, how scientific are the scientific studies - what were the biases of those who designed the IQ tests? how unbiased are the analyses? how inclusive and balanced are the tests of skill sets across genders?

mike at 10:27:19pm, do you have a problem with equal opportunities for all people? the issue feminism is concerned with is not that science is bad. feminism asks for a solution to imbalance, that 1% you talk about. a solution so that a century from now scientific tests would be more accurate. do you have a problem with that? or would you prefer that the 1% remains?

    1) Male or female, learn how to spell.
    2) Don't you have anything better to do on a Friday night?
    3) I don't have anything better to do either, but my wife sent me this useless article so I thought I might as well respond.
    4) How about we stop funding bull*** research like this and just shut up (my wife's suggestion to me!)
    5) Enjoy!!!

I definitely have to agree with #1. That is the greatest output of perceived intelligence. Expanding one's vocabulary is also another important thing. As a manager, that is something I notice from my employees or prospective employees. I feel many people would blame their bad spelling or grammar on typing, and I have to say you should get used to it! It's not going to go away. I think grammar is definitely something that needs to be more heavily emphasized in schools. NOTHING maeks somobe look dummer than riting like this... Ick!

Isn't it better to underestimate rather than over estimate your intelligence? I would rather ask questions and learn than pretend I know everything and never learn anything new. I do think that women need more confidence and self-esteem in order to begin to actually ask questions though. Keep the research coming and soon enough women will not have to work twice as hard to prove they are just as capable as a man.

Why yall believe in such research ? We all know that men are smarter than women. Alot of women believe so too. This Adrian guy is just another Dr.Phil !!!

Wow, I guess I was really blessed while growing up. I thought both of my parents were smart. My mom took careof the household finances and my dad worked with computers and other really technical stuff. My mom still had to spell check his reports for him (the original personal computer), but my dad could build and remodel. Neither of them thought I wasn't smart and my sister and I had as many Legos as we did Barbies.

YouMeWe was correct, this article clearly says men and women are equally intelligent, but they PERCEIVE themselves differently. I don't do that with my intelligence, but I sure am shocked when I see myself in a photo, I definitely perceive myself as thinner than I am, not dumber.

All of you are crazy. If men were smarting then why do they make so may dumb decisions in life.PERIOD. Women are smarting when it comes to way more than tests, and IQ's.Women are smart in every form. We succeed better at anything we put our minds to..If it takes me to say this then you know it's true. Now some dumb man is going to be mad and reply to this and it just proves my point. There's no way to argue against this.

The claim made in this article that the average IQ for men and women is equal is blatantly false. There are NUMEROUS studies out there now confirming that the average man has a higher IQ than the average woman. Here are two articles that mention such studies.
Don't let Newsweek pull the wool over your eyes. This article is nothing but male-hating garbage.

You do realize that in your second reference, the man who wrote that according to genetics Africans are dumber than both Europeans and East Asians. His claims are very controversial and often found false. But, I personally dont believe that either gender is better.

Oh, boys. You lambaste this article as a "femenistic BS study" that ignores "60 years worth of science", yet, all this article states is that women, on a cognitive, IQ level are equal with men. It also states that women are raised to believe that they are less intelligent than they actually are while men are raised to believe they are more intelligent. This study, as reported, does not appear particularly biased; however, I believe many of the previous commenters are using THEIR OWN biases to incorrectly interpret the content of this article. It appears that many of the men, and some of the women, think that this article states that women are smarter than men, yet it only compares the actual intelligence and the perceived intelligence of the two sexes.

Furthermore, this article suggested different areas in which men and women differ in intelligence. Men are considered more spatially intelligent while women are more emotionally intelligent. However, western society raises children, almost from birth, to have these characteristics. Little boys are given toy blocks and shapes while girls are given dolls and mini kitchens. Of course, boys are then going to develop better spatial skills while girls develop better emotional and empathetic skills. Moreover, by using the term "gender", the author suggests that these perceived intelligence differences are culturally determined because of the fact that "gender" refers to how a society defines what it is to be male or female (while "sex" merely refers to anatomy).

As to some of the previous commenters - a number of you are lambasting Lady O. Boys, if you are going to comment on someone's spelling and grammar, then you should be careful of your own. The word is "look", not "l!ook". It is "making" not "makinmg", "spell" not "splell", and "women" not "wemon". You make a "point"; whereas a "pint" is a glass of beer.

Here is an excellent example of what this article describes - how a man perceives himself more intelligent than he actually is:

"Question - ... who taught you to splell? then why do they make so may dumb decisions in life.PERIOD. ..again not makinmg women l;ook too bright."

True, there are many instances where women make stupid decisions. I mean, there are a number of women out there who when I see them, I???m like, ???Seriously? You are the reason why men think so little of women???. However, the same can be said for men because a large number of the men I know are dumber than dirt and make the stupidest decisions.

Boys, the point is that women and men are cognitive equals, so, please, get off your insulting, bigoted high horse and give your mother, wife or girlfriend, and daughters some credit. Then, perhaps, you won't make such a "stupid decision in life" as to underestimate her.

Note: I do not consider myself a feminist; however, I also do not consider a man to be better than me merely because he has a Y chromosome.

Im a 36 year old woman. I 've tried hard to gain the confidence that my mother took from me all these years. All these years she was admiring my brothers and underestimating me. Basically i believe im much more intelligent than my brothers but i have achieved less in my life due to my mothers behavior towards me. This proves what the article says.

I for one think it is men that have put women in the sub intelligent class that we believe ourselves to be in. I am a prime example of a woman that has overcome the stereotype. I came from a violent and broken home, had no self esteem and yet did well in school because it became my refuge, and I learned to spell and type unlike some men. Although I later left school my senior year, I did get my GED and returned to college for a while. I am now 40 years old and I work in a predominently male industry. My career has taken off and I am doing quite well, only because one man, my grandfather, told me I could do anything that I wanted to if I put my mind to it and I believed it. I continue to move up the corporate ladder and am highly respected by my male peers. Living the American dream. Never once have I ever thought that I just couldn't do it. I truly believe that the perceived intelligence has more influence than we know. I am proof. Teach your daughters well.

I see you blaming men for putting you where you are, taking credit yourself for getting out... then saying you are doing well in a male dominat field and that men respect you. So which is it? Sounds to me like you only escaped one personal situation you were in and blanketing all men by saying "I for one think it is men that have put women in the sub intelligent class..." That hurts my feelings as a man cause I know for a FACT that I didnt have a single thing to do with your life before you, more then deservingly, made a good life for yourself. Which was my point way down below @ 9 something AM... men are groomed for success and women for support by idiotic tradition.

  • Posted By: Korea123 @ 01/25/2008 7:56:54 PM

All this article ended up doing for me was prove we aren't ready to seet sexWARZ down. Action > Words every time.

My personal solution? Of course its going to be over simplistic, idealistic and naive... Dominion must go bye bye. see fixed.

Its not who you are underneath, it's what you do that defines you.
