Why does the media continue to give Senator Obama a pass on everything? The media is painting all the candidates as evil except for Senator Obama, they are treating him like a king. I am requesting the media to pull together a side-by-side comparison of all the candidates to reflect proposals, positions, experience, track record, etc... as it relates the current issues that include the economy, war, taxes, social security, etc..

I just don't find these type of article helpful. All they do is inflame the situation. The media is so focused on creating the hype around negative attacks that americans are not paying attention to the real issues and qualifications of the candidates. Americans have a choice to vote based on having an emotional reaction to all the stuff the media spins..or...we could actually do some objective unbiased research to determine who would actually make the best president. The last time this country elected a "likeable" president who connected with people..look what happened--we got George W. He was elected by folks that were emotionally charged up.

Wow, good use of wordsmithing there. That's a winner argument. No, wait, it's not an argument or debate, it's good old-fashioned five-year old name calling. Boo hoo.

I think people should contact their local Democratic representative to the house or senate and tell them how offended they are by this. There are alot of newly energized people donating and volunteering for the Democratic party, and many of them are Obama supporters. I can tell you from my perspective, if she wins with this kind of operation I am out of politics forever. Obama gives people hope that maybe there really could be a better kind of politics. I think the political machine built by the Clintons will stoop to anything, and how does that make them any different than the group in the White House now?

Go Hillary. Do whatever it takes. I can take the mud, would prefer issues issues issues, but heck, mud is cool too. Since we are getting rid of the 935 times lying us into war GOP, what's a few minor distortions to get there.
Fire away, but save your best stuff for the general. And Barack was wrong, He said He could get Hillary voters and Hillary couldn't get his. Let him drag this into race and Oprahland and watch the GOP win again? What is he, nuts? Is that a hope statement there buddy? Now Barack has been inspiring, but don't play with fracturing the party like a GOP puke. I quit sending funds to Move On when they started running D's against incumbent D's. This whole intra party purge stuff can go away.
The talk radio dittoheads are wringing their mitts now just waiting for a shot at Barack, whereas all they can do with Hillary is replay old shows. Frankly after being bushwhacked and dragged off to war in Iraq for Cheney's oil buddies, what can Hillary do that's worse? (I say give Texas back to Mexico as Immigration Reform...)

      Breas,

What you are saying sounds like the whole lesser of two evils argument. Let's get a lyin @$$ democrat in the white house to replace a lyin' @$$ republican. I want more out this election, which is why I cannot support Clinton in the primary and will not support her in the general election if she keeps this win at all cost mindset going. I could vote for McCain or the GOP candidate for that. Heck, at least I know they are better at it. Obama at least makes me believe in something beyond the muck racking politics I have gotten to used to over the 20 years since I could vote. Clinton says she's found her voice in New Hampshire, seems to me since she had this epiphany she's only used that voice to deride Obama every chance she has gotten.

Very astute observations. I agree with your analysis completely, but I also fear that these Clinton smears will do their damage before the truth catches up. I don't understand why some Democrats appear to not be getting that this strident Hillary/Slick Bill routine is what we have in store for us if she is the nominee or, God forbid, gets elected. Do we want 10 more months of this -- not to mention 4 or 8 more years? Obama's right; they've had their shot. It's time to turn the page.

I agree totally! The Clinton's are playing Rovian politics to the T and it's disgusting. After 8 years of Democrats trying to rise above the fray of this dirty administration, to have the Clinton's jump into the same grime is disheartening. I hope - and think - Alter is right and the voters will see through this.

Great column. As a life-long, 50-something moderate Democrat, I just want to say that I have already made my mind up regarding not only my vote in the upcoming Wisconsin primary, but also in the general election in November. There is no chance in hell that I will ever vote for Hillary. Her style, her pretending to be a leader, (past, present and future), her negative campaigning, out and out lying, shrill remarks from her husband, and the overall disingenuous tone of the campaign have turned me against her no matter what. If Hillary wins the nomination I will be voting Republican in November. If not, the Democratic nominee has my vote. I have voted Republican in the past (Reagan 1980) and will do it again if it comes to it. Does anyone in their right mind think that anything will improve with a Hillary presendency? She has never once demonstrated the ability to lead anything. She failed miserably with the universal health care initiative back in the 90's, and every new idea she has come out with in this campaign is totally hair-brained and ill conceived.

It's a shame you're not really paying attn to what matters and that you would waste your vote over such trivial things... and frankly, I'm taken aback at how many other people are echoing the same superficial gripes!

Isn't this article missing the big picture, just a bit? Such venom spewed over menial aspects of campaigning. Don't get me wrong, attack ads are just ridiculous and simply a waste of time, and I truly believe (and hope!) that Hillary and Barack will tone down the bickering and focus on the their platforms, or attacking the other's platform for weakness....

However, when you get down to brass tacks --- the difference between the candidates' ideas, plans, and track records, THAT'S what really matters. This country is in big trouble, bigger than it has been in decades, perhaps ever. We have to be very careful over who we elect next, and this election is more serious than basing our votes over popularity and how we perceive these candidate's morals (look at who we have now, Mr. "Bring-back-integrity-to-the-White-House").

We owe it to the betterment of this country to objectively look at each candidate's plan, political history, and ideals... and NOT refer to or allow the mud-slinging of the past, whipped into frenzies by media and political opponents, to be even a partial basis for our vote. Be critical of the candidate's record not this childish high-school campaigning crap.

Like I said, it's a shame you're not really paying attn. to what matters here.

It appears that the Clintons are stealing pages from Bush's playbook. The use of half-truths and distortions were disgusting when the republicans were using them against democrats and are even more disgusting when democtrts use them against democrats. If they are willing to adopt these tawdry Bush tactics, which other of Bush's tactics will they use next? Instead of turning away from Bush, Hillary seems to be learning from him. We don't need Bush redux. We need a break from politics by division.

HRC and Obama needs to stop "playing the dozens" - and get back focus on the campaign. Yes - Bill has been deemed (not by all Blacks) the first black president - and what does that really mean - that he can camp[aign against Obama for the "black vote" in SC while HRC woos the white - brown vote for Super Tuesday???

I just think they have shot themselves (and the public) in the foot. This election has been getting so much coverage because of what's at stake. The last 8 years have made a lot of normally apathetic people angry and wanting to get into the fray. It seemed for a second there with Paul, Cusinich, Thompson, Obama, and Gravel that people were starting to stand up and be different than "politics as usual". The theme of the whole thing quickly turned into "change".

Apparently that won't last. Entrenched power players like the "frontrunners" of the GOP and Clinton (both of them) can only fight "change" by forcing everyone else into a corner and saying "see, they're politicians of questionable integrity...just like us!"

I just hope Obama can pull himself out of that trap and get back to the "let's all be adults here" approach he'd been using so successfully. Let's just hope you're wrong about Americans' general ignorance, Mr. Alter!

Just say no to political dynasties. No more Clintons, no more Bushes -- these people think they are entitled and it is important to send them a message. If a Bush or Clinton runs for any office then I will gladly vote for their opponent no matter when, where or how. Clinton/Bush are of the same cloth, they will lie and cheat to gain power for their own selfish ends. A pox on them all.

  • Posted By: olliejack1 @ 01/24/2008 2:32:44 PM

I don't like it when republicans use distortions and half-truths to make democrats look bad. I dislike it even more when a democrat uses those tactics against fellow democrats. I used to like the Clintons, but their "win at all costs" makes me distrust them. It's sad to see those I used to admire and respect step into the gutter. Those who argue that politics ain't beanbag miss the point of what Obama is all about. What's wrong with the politics of addition instead of the politics of division? If the Clintons have taken this page from Bush's playbook, what other pages will they take next?

Should Hillary win, America will get TWO for the price of One. Hillary, who will say anything and do nothing, and Bill, who is out of control. Good luck America, you will surely get what you deserve. The problem is, the rest of us shouldn't have to pay for your mistakes.

Frankly am tired of hearing about Clinton's one-night-stands with women. That is none of our business, but only an issue between husband and wife. It had no revelance to his job performance, none to the American people either. The economy was healthier than it had been in years. The U.S, debt was decreased for the first time in decades. And yet, the right-wing leaders and fundamentalists did all they could to impeach and indict him because of his sex life.

iI daresay that the majority of the men in Congress as well as the majority of American citizens have at one time or other cheated on their spouses.

For the past 8 years we have had a man in the presidency whose behaviour has divided the country, 'killed over 4,000 American soldiers, maimed physically or mentally tens of thousands,, and God only knows how many ordinary people in the Middle East. The American government' reputation has been damaged amongst other nations. Never would I have believed that we would become a laughing stock for some and a derogatory conversation piece for others,

Clinton lied about his sex life. Bush lies about WMD, etc. Bush's lies lead to dead Americans and an
upheaval in the Middle East that will last for decades. Which do you prefer?

Most other nations honestly do not are about their head of state's sex life. Whether or not the job itself is being done is all that matters.

...except for that whole "honesty" thing. If he can't be honest to the woman he made a life-long commitment of love to, what's stopping him from lying to a bunch of strangers that we call "the general public"?

I have yet to see a convincing argument that excuses what the Clintons have been doing in the last month. I'm also disappointed at Obama for taking the bait and sinking into "politics as usual". I only hope his win in SC (if he wins of course) will boost him back up so he can get back to his old "let's be adults about this" tactics.

I've been listening carefully to both candidates. The Clintons are saying what it takes for Hilary to be President. That includes a growing measure of intellectual dishonesty. Obama has been imperfect to be sure. But, on balance, I would be a happier, prouder American if he were President. I don't like the way Hilary makes me feel about the political process. She wants to win more than she wants what's best for the country. You can feel it. That might appeal to some voters. For me, it seems like more of the same: more polarization, more gridlock, more accusation and counter accusation. I just don't think we can afford four more years of it. I'd choose Obama over any Republican, but I'd choose McCain over Clinton.

  • Posted By: markus1976 @ 01/24/2008 2:24:23 PM

What the Clinton's have been doing is shameful. Instead of focusing on the issues and his message, Obama's had to defend himself against OVERWHELMINGLY FALSE accusations and mudslinging.

The Clinton's charges about Obama's feelings toward Reagan and the GOP in the 1980's is the worst of all. If you listen or read to the speech he made, one or senteces have been pulled and taken completely out of context. (fuid the speech online- it's available).

In FACT (a word they've apparently forgotten), BOTH Clintons have made similar comments about Reagan in the past! (Read Tom Brokaw's book on the 60's- he quotes BOTH of them).

I really hope America does it's homework, and realizes the TRUTH- that BILL and HILL will obviously say or do ANYTHING to get back in the White House. In the process, they're tearing their party apart...

    good job, guys...

It sickens me to hear former President Clinton distort Senator Obama's words. Everything Senator Obama said about Ronald Reagon was true and correct. Now Hillary and her husband try to distort Senator Obama's words. Do the Clinton's think we are so dumb that we can't see what they doing. No wonder the republicans consider Hillary their best weapon If Hillary becomes the democratic nominee, we will be saddled with a republican president.

Billary//HRC and her repulsive spouse are two of a kind. She is a low-life liar and mud slinging hardcore feminist who will do anything to get her self-entiitled place in the whitehouse. She has been watching and probably cheering him on through all of his abuse of women. Yes, it's her business if her husband is a lying adulterer but it is my business if I have to be force fed another display of his treacherous behavior. They are horrific and this country doesn;t need to witness their antics anymore.
