We are in a very interesting and exciting time in U.S. politics. Age has made the Clintons shrewd politicians. After Iowa it was apparent Obama can trascend race and court white voters. His oratory skills and fresh approach has certainly made him more appealing then the rest of the dems. It seems the Clintons played the race card and lured Obama to the black civil rights activists and let him dwell in South Carolina. This seemed to have brought a form of phobia to white voters who ultimately form the bulk of the electorate. The Clintons by having Bill in South Carolina and thus allowing Hillary to court voters in super tuesday states is a very clever move because it makes Obama less appealling to white voters. Experience here has made the Clintons get the better of Obama. It shows that to be politically astute requires the tactful display of the art in minipulation. The Clintons have scored big time.....

Here is the testimny of the man who claims had gay sex and CRACK Cocaine with Obama. Curiously Obama has NOT disputed Mr. Sinclair testimony.

OBAMA PROBABLY DOESN'T WANT TO BE TESTED FOR COCAINE SO HE LIES LOW FOR NOW. AND HOPES THIS SCANDAL WILL GO AWAY.

Obama is accused and up against the wall.
The Obama camp is silent which is suspicious since if untrue they would be suing Sinclair right now.

Hillary Supporters: "The media is BIASED for decrying our candidate's lies and half-truths! Instead of pointing out the lies and distortions from our candidate, you should be writing about Obama non-issues like 'present' votes! Yeah! Those evil 'present' votes!!! Rezko Rezko Rezko! Who cares if those allegations have been shown to be false or non-issues? Newsweek, you are biased!"

With these kind of supporters, who needs the rest of the party, eh?

Barack Hussein Obama is a con man. You democrats supporting Obama is being conned also by republicans pretending to be democrats. Republicans know that if Obama become the democratic party candidate, it will be a republican president again comes 2009.

    • Posted By: pinkpanther87413 @ 01/24/2008 3:31:33 PM

"is being conned" proves the point to a tee

      • Posted By: headandshoulders @ 01/25/2008 4:09:04 PM

Exactly, pinkpanther, as does the comment "It will be a republican president again comes [sic] 2009." A lot wrong here, but let's just focus on the most obvious: four-year terms, genius. Next time you want to make this point, add 4 to the number 2008 -- if you can.

Alterman should spend time reading the text of of Obama's words. You don't have to be Derrida or Levi-Strauss to be able to Deconstruct the meaning of his statements. Read Obama's own words about why people voted for Reagan and you would see that the Clinton's are not wrong in their charachterization, from the perspective of naturally partisan Democrats like myself.

He put us on a fundamentally different path because the country was ready for it. I think they felt like with all the excesses of the 1960s and 1970s and government had grown and grown but there wasn't much sense of accountability in terms of how it was operating. I think people, he just tapped into what people were already feeling, which was we want clarity we want optimism, we want a return to that sense of dynamism and entrepreneurship that had been missing."

The excesses and growth of the government were what the Democrats did. It was The Great Society, the environmental movement, Medicare, Civil Rights, Progressive taxation, Government Regulation of Corporations. Calling them excesses is Republican language. Most Democrats didn't think they went far enough. And the "clarity" was against the honest soul searching that Americans had after Vietnam and Watergate of our place in the world.

so I notice nothing from Newsweek on the "present" votes (all of them and not just a select few) that Obama cast in the Illinois Senate, nothing about the fact that he has missed more US Senate votes in last year than any other Dem other than Tim Johnson, and nothing about how Obama engaged in a land deal, which was possibly all legit, with Tony Rezko AFTER rezko was known to be under investigation.

    • Posted By: pinkpanther87413 @ 01/24/2008 3:34:22 PM

THE LAND DEAL IS AS ACURATE AS THE REAGAN CONECTION. YET ANOTHER WHO DOES NOT READ THE FACT CHEKED, AND REBUTTED AS BUNK! TRY AGAIN! IM WHITE AND STUPID, BUT DOES NOT MEAN GUILIBLE

      • Posted By: ericrsiny @ 01/24/2008 3:55:59 PM

As I said...it looks like deal was legal...but why did Obama do it with someone under federal investigation? he himself said it was bone headed. Rezko was also on Obama's finance committee for his US Senate run but Obama claims he only raised tens of thousands?? Please...

        • Posted By: eXcommunicated @ 01/25/2008 3:59:15 PM

eric... Why don't you stop memorizing Clinton press releases and viral emails and wake up and smell the coffee? Obama has been vetted on this issue and he comes out clean. No matter how many times you jump up and down on a message board it won't stick, because its already been answered to.

        • Posted By: pinkpanther87413 @ 01/24/2008 4:04:02 PM

FACT AND CHECKED AS SOON AS OBAMA WAS NOTIFIED THAT MAN WAS UNDER INVESTIGATION ALL FUNDS AND DEALINGS STOPPED THE MONEY WAS NOT GIVEN BACK IT WAS GIVEN TO CHARITIES ALL OF IT AND HIS RELATION WITH THIS MAN STOPPED THAT SAME MIN.-FACT!

Did you notice the chicago papers all said there is nothing to the present vote fiasco. There was also a present vote on an abortion bill that IL planned parenthood said was part of a strategy to prevent the bill from passing and the supported obama's position. A number of the present votes were part of an effort by groups of lawmakers to show displeasure with a bill and 10-20 or so others voted that way.

Hillary is listed as 7th in the senate for missed votes, with over 100. There is nothing to that as well. I noticed most were since his presidential campaign started, as were Hillary's. Also, alot of the earlier ones were on amendments or appointments for federal judges where the vote for or against didn't matter.

I have lost a great deal of respect and loyalty for Bill and Hillary Clinton. Why must they continue to voice all of these lies against Obama. It's obvious that the Clintons would rather insult the American people's intelligence by making these continous false accusations in hopes that we can't see through their plot. I was beside myself when IHillary admitted during the last debate that she had actually took time to read Obama's transcript from a Nevada interview. I really hope the Clinton's get a life, stop the destortion of Obama's character and discuss the important issues facing the American people.. It's so unprofessional for the two of them to continue to behave in this inappropriate manner, as if they were hired to be "Chief" and Assistant Chief Crooked Cop..

I want a cantidate that has a opinion and is not just present. I also want a cantidate that has substance to their speeches, and not just a lot of nice catch phrases and flashy rhetoric. Even as a educated (PhD in Molecular Biology) voter I do not buy the Obama spiel. Despite being an educated voter, I like Hillary. It is obvious from your article that you do not like Hilary and that you are swayed by the artfully delivered rhetoric of Obama.

    • Posted By: eXcommunicated @ 01/25/2008 3:55:25 PM

The "present" vote "controversy" has been dealt with, and lo and behold, it was a "controversy" made of thin air! Once again, a factchecking public is none too kind to Hillary and Bill.

  • Posted By: mscarr1 @ 01/25/2008 3:53:15 PM

If you people want to re-elect Bill Clinton via Hillary - you are as dumb as they think you are....and you will prove them right.

No more of Clinton or Bush as President - pick someone else - Dem or Rep - just someone else.

  • Posted By: eXcommunicated @ 01/25/2008 3:47:49 PM

    Reading Comprehension....

Jonathan Alter was not criticizing less-educated voters... He was criticizing the Clintons for assuming less educated voters are dumb and the Clintons' shameless pandering to ignorance.

Read the friggin article next time, this time with your eyes open.

  • Posted By: Karenn1 @ 01/25/2008 3:42:17 PM

Jonathan Alter thinks the American public is stupid. We can read for ourselves what Obama said about Reagan and the "excesses of the 60s and 70s." We know that Reagan was selling a return to the so-called good old days before civil rights and feminism. Well, Obama, without those excesses of the 60s and 70s, you would not be running for President.

Obama gave this interview to a conservative newsppaper in Nevada, in an attempt to appeal to conservative voters. Thank God Bill Clinton is out there exposing these issues because the media sure won't do it.

  • Posted By: ericrsiny @ 01/25/2008 3:08:19 PM

Jim Clyburn today stated that it was NOT Hillary or Obama who brought the issue of race into the South Carolina primary but rather Mike Huckabee with his comments on the Confederate flag. The voters AND the media should listen to what he is saying.

  • Posted By: Lady Eagle @ 01/24/2008 6:15:25 PM

Yes, we will get it right. There is absolutely no witch hunt. Both sides are slinging mud. Obama's camp came out first with the Punjab comment. How quickly we forget. All spouses defend their spouse on the trail. What is happening is both teams using their elbows. Sen. Obama is a fresh face an a media darling. This is perfectly understandable, But if he is not ready for the big leagues he should gather some more experience. What is happening now is child's play to what he has to look forward toin the general election. Whoever is the nominee I will vote for that person.

Incidentally, I am am African-American female with a doctoral degree. The pmedia needs to stop inserting themselves into the storyline.

    • Posted By: Julia55 @ 01/24/2008 8:00:14 PM

I agree. As an African American college grad and over 35, I've listened to all of the camps. Obama smiles and pretends he's not saying something nasty. When it's pointed out and when the other camp fights back, he cries foul and says they're ganging up on him. If he can't play in the big leagues, he shoul consider taking his ball and going home. If he stays, he shoul dstop pandering to the writers of pieces like the one we're discussing who feels that they're currying favor with African Americans. We see this throughout the media. Fair minded Blacks with an eye on what could be accomplished by a more experienced person. I couldn't care less of the race or sex of the candidate. Right now, we're in a tailspin and despite the gleeful cheers of closet GOP writers who stand on the sideline hoping these kinds of debates are going to "confuse" us negroes and incite us to focus on emotionalism of race and attempts to grab a historical mark, the fact is, it won't. Some of our grandmothers are caught up in the feeling of his being young and handsome and educated. This country is full of erudite, articulate Black men and applause to Obama for putting himself out there, but he has to do it honestly and he hasn't done so. The big smiles and handshaking and reading local newspapers before he goes into towns to speak at high schools and churches isn't enough. Let's let him speak clearly about FISA and China and Korea, the middle east, health care, the economy, sliding sales of single family homes, etc. he said he'd run a different kind of campaign. He hasn't. And he doesn't have any of our votes. Pieces like this one just drive the point of what the media is trying to do just to keep Clinton out is what keeps her going forward.

      • Posted By: headandshoulders @ 01/25/2008 12:34:39 PM

I'm fascinated by the fact that you, Julia, as someone with no more than an undergraduate degree thinks that not only are you implicated as part of the well-educated blacks who support Obama, and that you are smart than a guy with a Harvard law degree. You're not a "fair-minded" black. You're a Clinton sycophant who thinks that by completing your core classes you are more qualified to discuss issues than Barack, someone with experience in public office. The Presidency is about leadership, not being a policy wonk. Barack inspires people, a feat of which Hillary is totally incapable. If you, like most poor, uneducated blacks, want to live your life feeling indebted to the Clinton dynasty, be my guest. But there's no need to tear down a young black man trying to enact change in this country. And there's also no need to assume you're being included when anyone is talking about the well-educated blacks who support Obama. You're clearly not the target.

I really liked the clintons for a long time even through the scandals of the 90's because at the end of the day bill was a good guy and a good president, but recently i'm forced to reconsider my support of the clinton camp once they started attacking a young open minded positive thinking democrat like barack obama, i think they have been arguing with republicans for so long they now see anyone that disagrees with them as an angry republican when obama more than any of the democrats represents what the party used to be all about, namely change for a better healthier america.

  • Posted By: Julia55 @ 01/24/2008 8:40:32 PM

I beg to differ, Mr. Alter. You're not Black. How do you know what we're thinking? Most of my well educated African American friends and family members are Hillary supporters. We beg to differ that we need to scrtach our heads and shuffle along and allow ourselves to become bedeviled by the Clintons. The fact of the matter is, we educated Blacks ARE listening to all sides. And many of us aren't convinced. Obama isn't necessarily one of us. He can't claim the same problems and upbringing, so allowing himself to shift into regional dialect when addressing crowds may work for the folksy crowds, but it didn't work in New Hampshire and doubtful it will work in California or New York or larger, more urbane areas. Because we've seen the Obamas before. He may be articulate to all of you, but we all have brothers and cousins like him. And we wouldn't necessarily vote them President, either.

    • Posted By: headandshoulders @ 01/25/2008 12:20:36 PM

Alter doesn't have to be black in order to "know" what black people are thinking. They are called polls, and he's quoting them, like anyone else does in an analysis of a candidate's appeal among different groups of people. You, as an educated black woman, are more than welcome to support Hillary, as are your friends and family members, but that doesn't put you in the majority. The majority of educated blacks support Obama, and the numbers clearly bear that out. So before you start talking about whether or not Obama is "one of us," consider the fact that if the "us" you're referring to is educated blacks, by supporting Hillary Clinton, it is you, my dear, not Barack who is on the outside looking in.

  • Posted By: drisc2000 @ 01/25/2008 12:13:11 PM

I think you may have missed the point of what the Clintons are doing. By raising the issues of gender and race, they succeeded in making Obama the "black" candidate. It is no coincidence that the Clintons primary constituency, less educated white voters, are moving away from Obama, even in South Carolina. This is classic Bill Clinton, divide and conquer politics. If you win, you can clean up the mess later. By the way your comment that the impeachment trial was a witch hunt is factually inaccurate. He did commit perjury and he did misuse his office (even he admits this). I think Bill Clinton did some great things, but he also fumbled some important issues, such as national health care (with Hillary's help). She suffers from the same problem he had in regard to public opinion, abivilance. Her negative poll numbers have not budged in two years. Independents are put off by her and conservatives will rally against her. She is the Republicans dream candidate. McCain will beat her easily because the hill for him to climb is so small, nearly half the electorate has already rejected her. Remember that even in the 90's the best Bill could do was 46% of the vote in 1996. Were it not for Ross Perot, he would never have been elected president in the first place.

I could care less about these Resko problem PEOPLE OBAMA DID NOTHING ILLEGAL! Resko helped him raise money back at a time when he didnt know or no one knew he was practicing in shady business deals. Look if Obama wrote legislation to somehow help Resko or got into some shady business deals than I would have a problem with that. Clinton should not bring that up she is dirtier than mud.

Some interesting news cropped up on MSNBC, regarding the Clintons appearing in a congenial photo side by side with "slumlord" Tony Rezko ( http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22839654 ). Think of it: the Clintons appearing all chummy with the guy Hillary tried to tar Obama with.
However, my point is not to accuse the Clintons of anything, other than obvious hypocrisy. Both of them went through the hell of false allegations over Whitewater; they should know better than to try to slime a guy with the same sort of lie that plagued them through the '90s.

  • Posted By: jnwilderness @ 01/25/2008 11:04:38 AM

So when will Bill, oops Hillary, Clinton be sworn in? Oh, and Jeb Bush is waiting in the wings to retake the White House and, as before, The Clinton 2.0 White House will make sure that it talks about and implements policies that will insure that the Republicans retake Congress in 2010 (paving the way for Jeb). You know, "Another Contract with America" and since most of Bill's, darn it, Hillary's supporters are suffering from "withdrawal" as a result of not having enough of Rush Limburger et al, well here's their opportunity to get their "fix".

Hey, it's like "deja vu all over again". I just can't wait, can you?

However, if you're not exactly thrilled about that, then perhaps you should ignore the attacks and look for change. We need someone to infuse unity. We need someone that will bring a new perspective. Yes, The NY Times endorsed Hillary, but did they really or was it Bill that they were endorsing? Ask yourself?

IF The Clintons retake the presidency and the republicans retake congress the ones that will suffer is us, the american people. We will be in a "quagmire" and I'm NOT referring to Iraq either. Oh, by the way, I'm consider to be an "Independent", whatever that means.

  • Posted By: MScarmack @ 01/25/2008 10:44:28 AM

What I find patronizing is the media's assertion that Democratic primary voters haven't already figured all of this out on their own. God forbid they choose someone not over race and gender, but over experience and substance over inexperience and style. And God forbid the voters actually will get a chance to vote rather than have one candidate coronated by the media after one state caucus. The media is hell bent on making this primary about race and gender instead of actual issues. That I find insulting and yes, patronizing.
