Please--as a Latino voter, I am asking: stop referring to us as "brown." We're not ALL "brown."

    • Posted By: koolicious @ 01/27/2008 7:42:34 PM

First of all, the term latino or Hispanic is in no way a racial term, but a language.. Latinos/Hispanic comprises of people of all races, and thats what needed to be stated. While what you said is true, it also indicates some color prejudice on your part. To say that latinos/Hispanic are dark or brown-skinned is what you despised most. But it may sound ok to refer to you as " white" isn't it?

I agree that lack of leadership is one of the contributing factors in the black-brown divide. I personally have been subjected to racism by blacks and have heard them allude to the resistence of power sharing. I wonder how Marting Luther King, Jr. would react to this divide today?

Unfortunately race will always be a factor in everyday life, but I do believe that White Democrast/White Liberals tend to be more racist than your average conservative; they resent blacks becoming successful in life, since it gets harder for the democrat/liberal to use race as an issue. The Clintons through this presidential race have shown their contempt for Barack Obama because he is black, (they thought the black vote would be easier to get). It is a shame that blacks are ignoring Barack and running to the Clintons, this may be the only chance they get for electing a black president, but I do believe that many blacks tend to look at whites as their savior (sort of a white master/black child mentality). The Latino vote and also the Asian vote will not be there for Barack, it showed in Nevada and will in Florida/California/Texas, etc. Both Latinos and Asians feel they have nothing in common with blacks so their vote will go to Clintons. Understand that the Civil Rights movement fell into the lap of JFK, he like the Clintons were not interested in blacks, but that was an opportunity that JFK exploited, even though LBJ passed most of the civil rights bills; JFK gets the credit, just like Bill Clinton get credited as being the "unofficial" first black president, even though he put more blacks in prison than any other president before him. Obama can have a chance if blacks would unite but I doubt they will, as we have seen in every day life, blacks complain about racism but they never unite for anything meaningful and stick to it, rather they will just cry "racism."

Just what has Obama done that says he is ready to lead the country in this time of need..Great speeches do not give birth to great actions...I have yet to hear him articulate his grasp of the economy or our economic problems in any of the debates..As far as Iraq goes his votes in the Senate are the same as Hillary Clinton's.

    • Posted By: wonderwaaall @ 01/26/2008 3:49:55 PM

White democrats, as a whole, do not resent blacks for being successful. Perhaps there are some politcal leaders like the Clintons who do, or perhaps you (spider1) are just paranoid or racist. Beats me. The average white liberal, who is not concerned with "issues they can use," is not racist. There are plenty of racist people out there, but there are just as many liberals who are liberal in large part for that reason-they are not racist, and do not want racist taxes or programs. That is why I am a liberal.

This isn't the first time there's been a black candidate running for president ... this may be the first time for a black candidate to run on a major party ticket ... but to say that this may be the only opportunity to elect a black president is ridiculous ... the door is open and will stay open, just as it has for "lesser" political positions such as congressmen, governors, mayors, judges, etc. I live for the day when race, gender, color and creed are not even brought into consideration.

How will Barak or anyone make things better? He will have a rotten Congress to deal with that is corrupt to its evil core. An absolutely dysfunctional Government Body that fails Americans day in and day out.

When I think of another 4 years of Clinton added to the last 20 years of the Clinton Bush dynasty we've been forced to endure it makes me sick. If nothing else I hope Americans are smart enough to send Bill and Hillary back to Arkansas for a nice quiet retirement.

  • Posted By: Cecilpau @ 01/27/2008 5:51:50 PM

Latinos are Americans too and will be inspired by Obama. He must forget the Clinton slime and speak of Change, hope, peace and prosperity for all Americans to the Latinos and Whites who may be subject to racial pressures. All Americans will benefit from Change particularly those of us at the bottom of the ladder and are exploiited. Did Latinos fear any better with the Clintons and the Bushes? We need to vote for Change and not for Race. Come on Americans let's put this race problem to rest. We need to get along and be open minded.

I'm a Latino Texan and quite honestly, this question of racial divide is as abhorrent as our current governments ability to take out loans from china and loan the money out to other nations who don't even need the money. For crying out loud, it's not about "Politics" anymore. It's about being co-patriots, one race, in a country that we all love. I love America far too much to watch her being torn up by the media, politics. Vote Obama!!!!

  • Posted By: aroc80 @ 01/27/2008 12:27:14 PM

If the Republicans think a name would put them in the White House then they are just as stupid as you are. TNot all Americans do not think or read. Sorry that is so simple minded.

Barack Obama won South Carolina with majority of black votes. In February 5th primary states, blacks are in minority. White, Asian, and Latinos are overehelmingly support Hillary. Barack Obama has no chance of getting into White House. His policies and plans are not clear.
Barack Obama argues that he was against Iraq war from day one. But he forgets to tell you that he was not even in the senate to vote for or against it. Once elected to the office he voted consistently to fund the war. When crucial vote on Iran was tabled in the senate he was absent but he said he was against that too. Now we found out that Barack???s role model is Ronald Regan.
Ronald Regan may be god to some Republicans. But he was just an actor and acting like president. He thought ketchup is a good source of vegetables for school kids. He borrowed three trillion dollars to pay off his tax cut to the rich. He wanted to balance the federal budget but he never submitted balance budget proposals to the congress. He fired striking air controllers instead of listening to their grievances. When 241 marines died in Lebanon he attacked Grenada to increase his polling in the minds of American. He never put any pressure to white South African government to free Nelson Mandela from jail. Ronald Regan was a great president for the rich who does not care about social injustice. Barack Obama thinks Regan was a hero who transferred America. We should not trust this guy.

I'm an Ivy-league trained Hispanic physician and I'm writing here because I'm really tired of hearing "experts" talk about our vote. We as Hispanics/Latinos are very varied and the reality from one is not the same to the next one. We come in several different races, colors, backgrounds. There is definitely not one characteristic that can apply to all of us! To say that the "simmering tension" could impact this race is merely oversimplifying the issue. It is true, there are some portions of the Hispanic/Latino community that don't get along w AAs, but that is BS in other parts of the country. No expert can truly anticipate the Hispanic/Latino vote. It will be decided on the polls. Just ask Chavez. Every single expert predicted he was going to win his referendum and EVERYONE was stunned when the Venezuelans chose NO to his suggested changes.

I'm sick and tired of the white-male dominated media. How come there is no single African-American or Hispanic talk show host (I don't know what Lester Holt is) in the mainstream media, not to mention the shortage of diverse pool of political experts? All you hear about the Democratic election from the mainstream liberal media is one-sided, race-filtered garbage. Are our universities graduating any African-American journalists and political scientists who could bring alternative point of views to this one-sided spin media? Even the much respected Tim Russet this days surrounds himself with one-sided political experts and lets them patronize us with one sided and self-serving prophesies. There is a huge chunk of under served segment of American society whose views and opinions are not being reflected in the mainstream media. I'm no racist and cared less about the identity of the individuals who dominate and control the media if they acted responsibly and fairly. I'm sick and tired of watching politicians turned journalists/experts like Pat Buchanan brain wash us with their hidden agenda masquerading it as a neutral point of view or some half-baked Political Director of MSNBC present to us his wishes as some kind of poll supported finding. Is there anyone out there who wants to team up to create a new news media that is reflective of America? If you ask me, the media has more racial tendencies than the politicians, only that they push it down our throat like they are just doing their job.

Stop being sheep people. Hillary Clinton wants you talking about ANYTHING besides her actual record. Bring it down to petty ethical questions (which all politicians have - yes Obama has them, too). HEAR ME: I WILL NOT VOTE FOR HILLARY CLINTON. She destroyed any chance of Health Care for 16 years. She voted FOR IRAQ. She voted FOR KYLE-LIEBERMAN. Keep squabbling about BS and you are going to get what you deserve: a divisive, power-hungry, ineffective leader. I can't believe I'm saying this but I've been looking at McCain - he's pro-environment, i hate his position on Iraq - but at least he took a stand and he's more honest than the Clinton snakes.

    • Posted By: Karenn1 @ 01/26/2008 11:28:26 PM

McCain is pro-environment? He wants us to use nuclear power! I can't believe what I'm reading here. Learn the issues people!

Well put Mr. Jhindrew, but unfortunately Latinos and Asians believe they have more in common with whites than blacks even though whites believe otherwise, many immigrants from Latin America and Asia bring their own prejudices towards blacks with them and pass them on down; many of them believing that many blacks are lazy and not hard working. White is looked upon as beautiful in both Latin America and Asia, put a blond, blue-eyed man or woman in a room and watch them be treated with the upmost respect, put a black individual in the same room and watch him be ignored; just look at Spanish soap operas there are more whites on those shows than is represented in their communities but that is what they love, the black character tends to be a maid or some lowly individual as well as the Indian. In Brazil where it is 48-49% black/brown, you will usually see white models/actors, except for their soccer club which is predominately black. The white "liberal" media likes to use and condemn racism (Don Imus, Jena 6), but how many blacks have their own shows on CNN,MSNBC,Headline News, Fox or when children go missing it is always white kids you always see on tv, the white liberal shows their racism daily on tv and no one says anything? They recycle white actors who have never been on television just movies or they bring in British, Canadian, Australian actors instead of hiring minorities to be on their shows, and when they do they are usually maids, criminals or need help from the main white characters. It is a shame that in a new century we still can't move passed race, but unfortunately it will always be there.

Spider1 ~ Please do NOT speak on me behalf! Do not generalize. I have far more in common with African Americans than I do with Whites. Minorities have been opressed by whites. Minorities have a greater familial spirit. We have a greater respect for people in general. Again DO NOT TELL ME HOW I FEEL OR THINK.

The labels "hispanic" and "latino" were not requested by the very people who are identified by their use. These terms came into being as an attempt to lump a group of diverse and culturally different people under one generic umbrella. My ancestors are from Mexico. I don't have anything in common with Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, etc. The spanish language may be the dominant language, but from a political standpoint we have different agendas, wants and needs. Lumping us all together is an attempt to simplify our issues and impact on the country, similiar to labeling all white people as "Caucasian."
The race issue will always be woven deep into the fabric of this country. Capitalism depends on it. It is what keeps us stuck in the muck economic and political inequality. it's used to conquer and divide. Let's face it, if we all woke up tomorrow and racism was gone, what would happen next? How long before we realized the real division in this country is the unbalanced distribution of wealth, the polarization of the "haves" and the "have nots?" The "haves" need racism to maintain the status quo. Once the rest of us realize that, then you'll have your next revolution.
So you can put whoever you want in the White House. It's all about maintaining the status quo. Corporate America bought D.C. a long time ago. Wake up.

You're right. John Edwards was trying to talk about class, but nobody heard him. It all got overshadowed by race.

Hellary is playing the Latino Race/Age/Education Card in CA. My mom and I are both registered democrats. My mom who is a Latino Sr. Citizen gets several Hellary mailings a week. I am half Latina, have a masters degree and am reasonably young (under 40) and Hellary seems to be ignoring my mailbox. I find that fascinating.

Obviously, I am not a Hellary supporter but neither is my mom. We will both likely vote Republican in Novemeber if Hellary is the Democratic candidate.

It's a set-up - this Earl Hutchinson guy is one of the BIGGEST HILLARY SUPPORTERS out there!! He's written TONS of essays on Huffington Post website supporting Hillary Clinton and hating on Obama. Now he suggests a divide between blacks and browns - all this benefits is the Hillary Clinton campaign and their race-baiting!! That is all these blind Hillary supporters are about - win at ANY COST, divide our nation!! I can't believe Newsweek didn't even check this guy out before allowing him to spew his bias here!!

      • Posted By: Karenn1 @ 01/26/2008 11:17:32 PM

Dividing blacks and Hispanics doesn't benefit Hillary.; Both groups are majority democratic. The MEDIA is trying to divide the groups because they want to divide the Democratic Party.

The media cant help itself trying to divide the races. It just insists that people cant think outside of their race or gender. People dont give the media the story they want (America Divided By Race), give them the story theyre not expecting (America United At Last).

PEOPLE!!! Dont let the media divide us! That's the Clintons job. Earl Hutchinson is the biggest racist ive ever seen. He makes his $money$ off of pitting races against each other. He wants to drive a wedge between people especially African-Americans and Latinos because it sells books and wins elections.
