If the latinos vote as a block they hold the balance of power in the Democratic party. Watching the CNN talking heads talk about NC they said that Obama had put together a win in the Democratic base -- a strong majority of a minority (African Americans) and a minority of the majority (Whites). So if a candidate puts together a strong majority of the Latino vote, and more of the majoirity white vote, their candidate wins the nomination. Latinos hold the key to this election in their hands. If Obama gets 25% of the Latino vote and continues to pull a reasonable minority of whites he likely wins. If he loses Latinos like Hillary loses in the African American community he loses bacause Hilary will win more white voters. It is going to be a very interesting primary with the big big winners being the Latinos if they end up voting as a block.

Obama supporters don't care about knoweldge or experience. They think the President is just some guy who makes speeches--a symbol of unity, more than a hands on person who actually knows how to run the government. It's not American Idol. We have so many important issues facing our country, the economy, the war, the erosion of our civil liberties, and we need a President who knows what to do. The country doesn't just run itself.

Obama needs to go back to the Senate, stop missing votes, and learn how our government works.

Nice try, please spin again. It has been well-documented that Obama appeals to more educated Americans and in fact the pundits have on several occasions stated that Barack Obama needs to strengthen his appeal with blue collar workers. So we Obama supporters are people who closely follow politics and care about the issues. Which is why we know Clinton is a complete dishonest fake claiming "35 years of experience" when her resume shows otherwise. Which is why when she claims "America knows where I stand", we know it's an absolute lie, because she swtiches positions like the wind - she was for NAFTA, then against NAFTA; she was for the Iraq war, now she's against the Iraq war but won't admit she made a mistake voting and advocating for it; she was against driver's licenses for illegal immigrants and then for it - the list goes on. We are not going to be fooled with the sound bites and smear campaign that her people wage. We know Barack Obama has 11+ years of legislative experience, Clinton has 7. We know that even though Barack Obama has in the US Senate a short time, he has been writing and the primary sponsor of more significant legislation in the US Senate than Hillary Clinton has in ALL the years she's been in the US Senate. It was Barack Obama who crafted the toughest ethics bill our nation has passed since Watergate. Yes, we know about his "present" votes in Illinois and the solid rationale behind them, plus the fact that they were only 3% of his votes. So we don't fall for the Clinton mischaracterizations of them. In short, we know the Barack Obama we're voting for!

      • Posted By: Karenn1 @ 01/26/2008 10:13:18 PM

You don't even know Obama's voting record. He just voted to extend NAFTA into Peru. It came up in the debate. And he has not passed any significant legislation. Just one bill that says lobbyists cannot dine with lawmakers unless they are standing up instead of sitting down. That came up in the debate too. Look up his voting record in the US Senate on www.votesmart.org

He's missed like half of his votes. See what I mean? Obama supporters don't know the issues.

And I'm not surprised that blue collar workers are not drinking the Obama Kool-Aid. You can't eat hope. The best hope comes from a strong economy and a good job.

Obama takes South Carolina, very imressive; 54% percent of the vote to Clinton's 27%. I'm sure the white democrats will be fuming, and probably are now switching to the Republican party.

    • Posted By: mawrm @ 01/26/2008 9:47:32 PM

Well over a quarter of the whites who voted Democratic voted for him so I don't see how they could be "fuming". It's not about race, it's about change!!

I concur with some of the feedback posted in response to this article. Folks like Mr. Earl Hutchinson are tormented by the fact that they can no longer count on making a living by perpetuating stereotypes. Here's an "expert" whose views are informed by personal afflictions and distorted self-perceptions ??? views that he mistakenly feels are vindicated by way of institutional tools: in his case (and just by way of one example), a degree from a non-accredited university (another case of something like the academia enlightening the rest of us?).
I???m a Republican and have picked a candidate to support in the primaries within my Party. Nonetheless, at times I am tempted to vote for Senator Obama in the general election: if anything, to turn the page on American history and conclusively leave folks like Mr. Hutchinson out of business. It really is time to move on to other issues.
The only consequential ???divide??? exists among self-proclaimed leaders in each the black and the ???Latino / Hispanic??? (which as a couple of readers pointed out, can be black or of any other race and are hardly an ethnic group with definite commonalities) communities, folks like Mr. Hutchinson.
Should my pick for the GOP nomination lose the primaries I may support Senator Obama in November. I may not agree with him on many issues ??? I am still a conservative on fiscal and defense issues that I don???t feel he is addressing well enough. But on this particular domestic issue Senator Obama has made inroads that transcend ethnicity, race, etc. ??? he has managed to address the problems we all face as Americans in one way or another and, agree with him or not, he has been able to get us all to pay attention as Americans rather than members of a catalogue of political footballs for folks like Mr. Hutchinson to throw around for a few bucks.
To elect Senator Obama in November and decisively put a lid on guys like this may be worth my first vote for a Democrat for President in my lifetime. Who knows??? maybe I am ???Latino??? and I may be one of those ???Latino??? votes that help Senator Obama win in November after he demolishes Senator Clinton in the primaries, much like he did in South Carolina. Maybe I???m black though??? or white??? or Asian??? does it really matter Mr. Hutchinson? Mr. Hutchinson, don???t underestimate this younger generation of Americans that does not think like you ??? whoever we decide to elect in November, you can bet we???re deciding on our terms and not yours. You need a new job.

Well spoken!! Actually there are lot of folks who make a living off the racial divide who are actively fighting against a Barack Obama win because it puts them out of business. But we will keep fighting to defeat out-moded thinking and to usher in a new era in America.

  • Posted By: ndolan622 @ 01/26/2008 8:42:38 PM

If anyone can bring ALL people together, it's Obama - I just wish the pollsters and the analysts would get over this issue! I give more credit to Asians, Blacks, Hispanics and Whites/Caucasians than to fall for this...

I am amazed about how blacks white, brown and reds don't get it. It is called the "media effect". This is something that rings in our heads hours after we hear it. In many cases people take that as it is the bible truth. We get information from outside so that we could use our inner conscience to make good judgements. Due to laziness we think no further. We are lead like sheep. People should start hearing what they are not talking about. Think one step more. There is no race in America, but there is racism. There is no color in America but color codes. Its all for political gains. "The Blacks, The Whites" etc. "Code blue, Code Orange" etc. Think about it. A small group had figured it out. It bring wealth and power.

    • Posted By: AndreV @ 01/26/2008 4:47:53 PM

Right on breal1. Living overseas and having access to both US and international media has made me aware of just how much the media effect plays to the card of special interests in the US who have made media there so partial and lacking in both substance and relevance. In this day and age, we need to start questioning what we are being fed on the media and make up our minds by doing some research on matters that affect our lifes; in this day and age there are so many tools out there that can be used to end the media culture of fear and sheep mentality.

Oh, thank you for your insight, I like persons who think outside the box.

Well, the Clintons are playing this dirty game. The Clintons are using the white media to their advantage. They started it. They did it after a carefully crafted strategy. The Clintons win if the 'Race' comes to the surface of things. Issues do not win them the Party Candidacy. The Race will. They knew it. They played it. And the Clintons are smiling everytime the media mention it. Who are the demons? Who are the evil? They will win on 'Race' and lose on 'Gender'. Count on it.

  • Posted By: macmoses69 @ 01/26/2008 4:03:46 PM

It's amazing why some Latinos are dispusted for being referred to as "browns." Color I believe is just a way of identifying people even though it's very fluid. In some jurisdictions, Barack Obama, Collin Powel, Booker Washington, beyonce will be considered whites even though in the US they're blacks due to the one-drop rule or one-black blood rule. Even Mariah carrey by such definition is considered black. Are Latinos whiter or lighter-skinned than the above mentioned individuals? I dont think so. I'm very light-skinned and mulatto. On my birth certificate I'm white because my mom is white. However, I'm considered black at school because even though I could "pass" white, I have the very noticeable black features. Notwithstanding, I have not in my life come across any human as white as the color white itself. I think white people are rather pink and I've told my mom she's pink and not white. So those Latinos and Hispanics should come again.

    • Posted By: Chispas @ 01/26/2008 6:37:28 PM

Obviously by your comments you are a white wannabe. As you so state " I can pass for white but my black features are evident" so hat is the problem ? You are whatyou are so be comfortable with it. I am a proud Hispanic/Latino who has no desire to be any thing but..no matter the anglo genes that I have inherited.I have no problem with the uniform that I am wrapped in. I will definetly vote for Hillary solely because she is better qualified than Obama to lead our county at this time. Look again.

And you are one step away from the poorhouse. You are obviously a Bush-erite, either that or you're not listening..........

As you keep repeating ... let me please repeat "Well, the Clintons are playing this dirty game. The Clintons are using the white media to their advantage. They started it. They did it after a carefully crafted strategy. The Clintons win if the 'Race' comes to the surface of things. Issues do not win them the Party Candidacy. The Race will. They knew it. They played it. • Posted By: spider1 @ 01/26/2008 6:11:24 PM

To Wonderwaaall, nicely put without insulting me, but I am not paranoid nor racist (even though we all are racist in one form or another), but how many of you white "liberals" live in predominantly black or latino neighborhoods, not including co-workers how many latinos or blacks do you know? You people like to condemn racism, go to anti-racist/pro-immigration rallies and when it is over, you run to your little white enclaves, where if you see a black man walking down your streets you make sure to get out of his way or hide indoors; being raised in California, East L.A. and Compton are latino and black how many of your white "liberals" go down to that part of town to shop or eat? Many of your kind probably go to Taco Bell or buy a Ricky Martin cd and believe you've discovered "Hispanic culture," or maybe go to a blues bar and buy a Miles Davis cd and say you've experienced "black culture." Take time to go down into those neighborhoods to visit or maybe move down there (without over-pricing the black and latino individual out of their own homes), and say HOLA.

Do you really think people are voting for Hillary because she is a woman??? I would say more are not voting for her because she is a woman. I am a hispanic woman voting for the best candidate...HILLARY

  • Posted By: 24blue @ 01/26/2008 7:00:43 PM

I am Hispanic and my vote most certainly goes to Barack Obama, after all my family and I have more in common with them than I do with the Clinton's. Fellow Hispanics don't forget where Barack Obama came from, does it ring a bell? Viva La Raza!

Conquer and divide. "This divide and conquer keeps change from happening to the detriment of those who have been hurt by the policies that keep the rich, richer and the poor, poorer" Thats what politics and those in power have been doing since the beginning of time. The Republicans want to keep the status quo more then you realize. Keep the "people in conflict" and poor, then they won't have time to see what we are doing.

Think about it. Hillary and old Billy boy know that game well too. Hillary caters to what ever group she is talking to at the moment. I have news for all of you. We ALL have the same problems, we want good jobs, good schools and health insurance. We want good role models for our children. We want our children to have a future. We all want the same things for our families, our children and the world we live in. Hillary and the republicans the old establishment want us to think in a box, as singled out groups. They do not want us to work togther as one! They do not want us to break the status quo. They do NOT want us to work as one to make a better world for us and our children! Their empire would come tumbling down! Think how much we can accomplish if we ALL work together! Hillary also is the favorite of woman, like, "WOW" the first woman president! But guess what folks, When Obama wins, he opens the door, not only for men of all ethnicities but for ALL women no matter what color her skin is! Obama is the only one that tells each group he stands in front of that we need to UNITE to get things done!

    • Posted By: Lionfish @ 01/26/2008 7:55:26 PM

GOD!!! Somebody said it all. America wake up, don't vote for Hillary because she's a woman. BIG mistake. Vote for the issues at hand.......Consider that!!!!!

  • Posted By: missfitz @ 01/26/2008 7:55:00 PM

This is ridiculous. We look to the so called "experts" to provide insights into this process. However, it is these 'experts' who keep us stuck in the past with the non-progressive views and rhetoric. The signs are clear that American are hoping for a change in vision and tone of politics in this country. He is precisely correct that it is leadership that will begin to remove racial barriers and improve cooperation among races. Barack Obama is just such a leader and I am convinced that Latino will wholeheartedly support him once they learn about his person and vision. It is the media who perpetuates these divisive notions. Please stop the nonsense!

  • Posted By: Lionfish @ 01/26/2008 7:46:06 PM

Hillary Clinton really, really let me down as an black person. Iwas stunned and surprised when she dropped that bomb about Kennedy and Dr. King. Where in the hell did that come from. And I am so proud Obama stood his ground letting persons know he is not a push-over like Mr and Mrs Clinton with their underlying hatred for people of color, wanting him to "BUCK' dance..... That is why I changed my vote. The question is "who started this" I would not stand for someone to get in my face like that. Mr and Mrs Clinton started this. So put the truth where it is. He's only defending himself, and that is not his message..... Mrs Clinton was one of the ones who want """"TO SEND PEOPLE BACK TO MEXICO"""""" YOU FORGOT, SHE'S A LAWYER REMEMBER? aLL OF MY FRIENDSHAVE CHANGED OUR VOTE TO GUESS who?

  • Posted By: mawrm @ 01/26/2008 7:27:23 PM

The hallmark of Hillary Clinton supporters like Earl Hutchinson is to aggravate a divide between blacks and whites, between blacks and Latinoes, because it forwards the negative narrative that Barack Obama is a "black" candidate. That is an outright LIE and SMEAR to scare away Hispanic and White voters from Barack Obama. That's how the Clintons and their supporters inject race - they act as if they're doing an "academic journalistic exercise of "what if", but instead their purpose is to inject doubts and play to peoples' baser feelings! And that's why Hillary Clinton would be the WORST person for president for America. She and her people use the most disgusting tactics to bring their opponents down. First it was gender when the field was more open, now it's race since Obama is her strongest contender. It's this blind greed for power that her and her minions keep bringing up race to hurt Obama!! As an African-American I say to my Latino brothers and sisters- WE ARE WITH YOU!! Sure we have our differences, but to think that Hillary Clinton would try to divide us for her political benefit is SAD and shows you what kind of person she is!! She's not for Blacks, she's not for Latinoes, she's not for Asians, hell, she's not even for honest, fair white Americans, she's exclusively for HILLARY CLINTON!!! So vote NO to division and vote YES for Unity!! Vote Barack Obama 2008 and tell the Clinton dynasty and their disingenious surrogates like Earl Hutchinson to GO AWAY!!!

  • Posted By: mawrm @ 01/26/2008 7:05:43 PM

How can Newsweek claim any sort of non-bias and integrity?!?! Earl Hutchinson is an unapologetic Hillary Supporter!! Go to the Huffington Post website and see how many articles he's written in defense of Hillary Clinton and against Obama? Of course he suggests a negative outcome for Obama and brings up the race issue which the Obama camp has tried to avoid PRECISELY because he SUPPORTS HILLARY CLINTON!!

Hellary is playing the Latino Race/Age/Education Card in CA. My mom and I are both registered democrats. My mom who is a Latino Sr. Citizen gets several Hellary mailings a week. I am half Latina, have a masters degree and am reasonably young (under 40) and Hellary seems to be ignoring my mailbox. I find that fascinating.

Obviously, I am not a Hellary supporter but neither is my mom. We will both likely vote Republican in Novemeber if Hellary is the Democratic candidate.

I want to thank Mr. Hutchinson for letting me know that there is a divided, strained relationship between Blacks and Latinos. As a Black man, I have nothing but the utmost respect and appreciation for Latino people. If it had not been for Mr. Hutchinson pointing this out, I would have never known I had a strained relationship with Latinos. Thanks for speaking for Blacks as a whole Mr. Hutchinson.
