Museums have nothing to do with the appraisals of items donated to them. Irresponsible of the journalist to say that. All a museum does is sign an IRS form, Form 8283, which acknowledges receipt of the gift. The museum has no influence in the appraisal process.

All historical and other artefacts belong to the human race and not any particular individuals. The museums are still the best place for safe keeping and overall appreciation by the public. Well may be some other avenues accessible by public. Please those are our legacies - human legacies.
