This was such a heat felt statement. I hate to even call it a statement with all of the emotion and memories that were shared. Thank you for these snapshots in time of Heath that you shared about his work on the set ,as well as his work ethics.

By reading all of these comments I feel releived by knowing that so many feel what I feel. That although I never met Heath in person I feel like I lost a dear friend. Never thought I'd be so sad...sad cos not only we lost a brilliant actor, one of the best, but an incredible, unique person. What a guy! Most of us didnt know him in person, but we are so sure of what a great man he was, we just know it, and Chris confirms that with his article. Rest well, dear! I sure miss you bad....

I am probably a lot older than most of Heath's fan, yet, he was one of my favorite actors. Your written words actually made me cry for this lost talent. As a fan, thank you for this extra special insight into Heath Ledger, the person.

A beautiful and touching tribute. Thank you for sharing it with us. I feel so incredibly sad over Heath Ledger???s sudden and inexplicable death. What a brilliant and talented man he was.
Yes, Brokeback Mountain challenged and changed the way I thought about a lot of things but never once did I realize how strongly Heath Ledger and his work had actually influenced me up until the tragic day last week.
It seems to me that Heath Ledger was one of the few decent, honest people in the movie business. One who never compromised himself, never once gave less than what he could, and this piece of writing by Mr. Nolan only confirms it.
He obviously was a person who felt strongly and deeply about things; a fact evident in all his films. Through his work, he managed to connect with us in such a deep emotional level that many of us feel like we almost knew him. And no matter what some sources say, in his interviews Heath Ledger always came across as a person who dared to live his life without losing sight of his responsibilities to me.
I can???t imagine the grief and sorrow his family and friends must be going through right now, although the pictures of him with his daughter make me cry every time I see them. It breaks my heart that she has to grow up without her father.
It will be long before (if ever) I can watch his movies without crying. Heath Ledger truly was unique in every way.

The death of Heath Ledger has obviously come to a shock to everyone that has known him privately or had the great privilege of working with him. However, the other group of individuals that seem to be greatly affected by his passing are those that never had the pleasure of meeting this kind soul. However, he seems to have touched us so deeply that we feel as if we have lost an old friend. I am learning that so many people feel the same. That was the power of Heath Ledger.

He flew under the radar in Hollywood. He was not an ???in your face??? kind of actor. He was an A-list actor without the circus that comes along with that status. He loved his work and he was private in his life. We knew he was amazing on screen, but little did we know that he had completely won our hearts without pushing himself upon us.

The Dark Knight belongs to Ledger and should be marketed as such. Give the fans their friend in all his glory for what is sure to be a performance of a lifetime.

It has become too easy to dismiss talent these days with a skeptical shrug. Thank you, Mr. Nolan, for a glimpse into the very real work ethic and craftsmanship Mr. Ledger put into his work, as well as the playfulness that complemented that singular energy. It will make seeing your film a necessary emotional challenge, as well as a bittersweet pleasure. Much like life. Again, thank you.

Thank you Christopher Nolan for sharing your memories of this great and irreplaceable artist. We are crying his death from Argentina.

    Well put jmarc. Thank you

Jascip if you are tired of hearing it, turn it off. For those of us who are fans of Heath, or his family who may read this, we don't appericate your words. Some opinions are better kept to yourself, you know the old saying if you don't have something nice to say. I think Heath was a wonderful actor, and from what his family and friends and the many interviews I have seen of his, we was an even better person. I for one will miss him.

Can I just say I am tired of hearing about Heath Ledger. I am sure he was nice and a talented actor. But why do we mourn a celebrity who lives a priveleged life and throws it away? Yesterday on NPR I heard that the number one cause of death of young people in West Virginia was the overdose of prescription drugs. Just because Ledger was an actor we make a big deal of his death. Many people die every day who contribute more to society. Do we mourn them with the same intensity?

      jascip,

I can only half applaud you for your misguided attempt to create perspective. You are tired of hearing about Heath Ledger. Well, I am overwhelmingly tired of people using words and phrases like, "but, he was only an actor" and "why are we mourning a celebrity?" First of all, I wouldn't exactly call Heath Ledger a celebrity. He was that "other" kind of actor. He was a gifted artist. His work did actually have some bearing on society because without it you wouldn't have that movie to see on your Friday and Saturday night date. I would love to know the percentage of couples whose first date consisted of dinner and movie. And, as an actor. As someone we see living and breathing on screen or on stage or in an interview, it's easy to understand why his loss seems intense. An actor infuses a part of himself in each performance. We have a name and a face and a personality to assign Heath Ledger. Unfortunately, we don't have those things for the many people who lose their lives everyday, but someone does. And, I can assure you that their loss is just as intense.

Jascip... if you think that what Heath Ledger lived was a privileged life, then I'd like you to think of this: How would you feel if every single move you made, you were followed by cameras? If every step you took was scrutinized by the media? If you couldn't make a mistake in life, without it being plastered all over the tabloids? The life of an actor, even a good one, is one of long hours, boredom and then being asked to perform on command. Heath Ledger was an amazing individual and this should be celebrated. His kind don???t come around every five minutes, although the throw-away society we live in would like this to be the case.
It???s good to stand still for a moment and think, instead of saying: ???Great! But so last year. Let???s move on.???

I have to say it's way disrespectful to Heath Ledger's memory, and actually quite shocking for everybody who reads this piece, that you should post an advertisement about life insurance that reads: 'If you died today, what would happen to your family's future?'. What were you thinking? Way out of line.

What a beautiful piece of writing. Really captured such a genuine Heath. The work he has left behind means that much more because he truly loved the craft, all aspects of it. I am devastated that he is gone...but such beautiful words for such a beautiful man.

What a beautiful piece of writing. Heath seemed truly committed to his craft and was an artist through and through. I have been such a fan of Heath's, and to hear words like this make me value the work he has left behind even more - to know that he truly loved what he was doing and wasn't in it for the money. Such a talent, and such lovely words to portray him.

Comment: This is perfect example of what the world should be focused on when discussing Heath Ledger. Not sensationalized fictional accounts of how he died but the character he possessed, the heart that he imbued in his work, the lives that he touched with his soul. Instead, we are bombarded with a media rush to judgment that people devour as gospel and spread like an elementary school rumor.

Maybe the media should treat the topic of death as if it was someone they loved as opposed to a way to capture ratings and sell their wares.

Thank you Chris Nolan for giving a glimpse of the way he lived as opposed to the way he died.

Possibly the best insight into Heath that I have read thus far. I have been a fan of Heath since the mid nineties when he did the 'Sweat' television series in Australia, and was so proud when he became a household name in the US, it just went to prove what a special person Heath was and how humble he was when it came to fame. Thank you Mr Nolan for sharing your personal experience with such a special individual that will be sorely missed. My heart goes out to his family, Michelle and of course his precious daughter Matilda at this hard time. May they know what an impact Heath had on the world and that he'll never be forgotten.
