It does seem like we are talking about extremes, and not about those within the 3/4 and 11/12 sizes. OF those, there are numerous women! One of the most wealthy models I know, is Julie Strain - 6' tall, 160 lbs. She is absolutely GORGEOUS!! She is on another extreme, so we all should realize that healthy, eating right, exercising, is best. Everyone's body is going to have a 'sweetspot' of where it wants to be, and when you look at the weight and height ratios, you can have 30 lbs easily to fall within that healthy arena.

i love it... about time- but won't it seem to achievable to the populus?

I am 5ft1and 137....a size 6, and even i feel heavy when i look at those girls. I am average(maybe lose 5 pounds if I wanted) and I want to see normal women as well.

I am so tired of people talking about the size of body! I am thin all my life, but healthy and eat everything, meat, vegetable, fish, fruit, and even junk food once a while. I get compliments as well as criticizes. And I am very annoyed. It is just another MEDIA that controls your perception. It is a MARKETING strategy to sell new products and I rather people just ignore them, so that they are not caught up the size of body.

I'm fine with different shapes and sizes of models up to a point as long as they're fit--the last thing i want to see on the runway is jiggling fat or thighs rubbing together. Looking at 'real' people, well, most people are fat (sorry, it's true). I honestly don't care what size someone is until they start whining and complaining about it (if they're happy that's all that matters). But, when they start crying that models are so thin, that actresses are so thin and I see them eating take-out every day for lunch, it gets irritating. If you're not happy with your size, do something about it instead of complaining about those of us who are very thin.

Hmmm. The last time I checked 'thin' people were just as real and normal as 'non-thin' people.
They wake up, pay bills, vote, volunteer, work, probably hold down at least one job in addition to the times they model, have kids, have families, may have overcome personal challenges from abuse to insecurity, fall in love, break up, may have never loved, get zits, have tatoos they wish they'd never gotten. The point is judging the skinnies is no different than judging the fatties...THE PEOPLE HERE NEED TO CHANGE THEIR OWN MINDSETS BEFORE THEY CAN EXPECT ANYONE ELSE TO FOLLOW SUIT. GET REAL.

To all of the people saying thin will always be beautiful: Just a short while ago, stick thin WAS considered ugly. Look at old art. The Venus de Milo, Birth of Venus (Botticelli), and Mona Lisa were NOT thin and they were considered to be the epitome of beauty. And Marlyn Monroe was a size 16 (though I do believe she varied down to a size 12 or so as well...) The idea of the stick thin, sick looking beauty is extremely new as far as the time line is concerned.

Healthy women ARE NOT over 25 BMI, a size 14 is.

I see clothes I love in catalogs, but can't wear everything I see. I believe a lot more clothing would be sold if it is modeled by women with curves, around a happy medium--size 10. Then we can have an idea of what looks good in real life---this more clothing sold. Seriosuly--so many things only look good in the catalog, and then even a person who is considered as having a great , trim, but curvy shape, tries the stuff on and it is horrendous looking because the curves get in the way. I say give us more options of what to buy by styling models who are our size! Chicos is a perfect example. Their models are much too thin. Women like me who have serious cash to lay down and are more my size than the size of the models deserve to be represented in the catalog.

I'm a size 5ft1 and 137 a size 6, and even I sometimes feel heavy even when I don't look it. I get tired of feeling like I HAVE to lose weight or no one will find me attractive. So when will they stop body makeup and airbrushing? lol.

That's why everyone should just make their own clothes. Or have someone close to you that knows your size and what you like, make them. You know what you look good in so make it for yourself. So, at the end of the day people aren't pointing fingers and telling people they're too big or too thin. Your body changes at different stages in your life...You might be thin as a teenager and young adult, but you will most likely develop some curves later on in life. Since you know your own body...do what's good and make and model your own clothing creations!

I once wore large shirts. For the past several years I have bought medium. And, during sales there are lots of XL and XXL on the racks. Sizes for everyday people have shifted for the larger.

RAD! So what now instead of a size zero we will see size 2 on the runway - can't wait!!! (those of you who did not catch that, its severe sarcasism

The stick thin models are a bad example for society. Yes some girls are naturally that thin, but most people have curves. I have a new daughter, and I would rather her grow up seeing "real" women in magezines and on runways so it is not putting in her mind "you MUST be this thin to be beautiful". I rather her be a size 10 and happy than trying to be a size 1, and miserable. Some men find it rather gross to see the ribcage of a woman. Yes the models should reflect "real" women, but you do have to put a limit on how "large" of a model you will use. Average size is between 8 and 14. Although these are the average, there are women that are jelly bellies, and should be kept off the runway. The women used on the "just my size" campaigns are nice size, and can be used on the runways. They do not have the extra stretch marks, or the rolls. They are naturally thick.

To lm3898...and one might also be grotesquely obese and equally hideous on the inside...I'd be careful what you cast out into the world as it will come right back to bite you on the ***! Talk like that won't earn you any respect in this chat. Signed - a normal, physically fit, healthy eater who has a history of heart
disease in his genetic lineage so has taken control of what he puts into his body responsibly.

Please don't book plump models. I'm a solid size 8 (not exactly a toothpick) and I get repulsed at the Plus Sized models in catelogs. Its not ok to be over 25 BMI, sorry ladies. Fashion looks like a trash bag on them. Why does the world have to change for obesity to make them feel included?

  • Posted By: uponfashion @ 01/30/2008 1:58:00 PM

As a former model of the 80's, I look forward to the change. It was very stressful to maintain the weight that was required to be in the Industry. It's very refreshing to see that the Industry is taking notice and the look of the past is no longer necessary to reach the border market. After all, Women have Curves---and if young girls see those bodies on the catwalk and in magazines--they will appreciate and love themselves as real women!!!!!

I also agree with letting everyday women model. Lets be real ,everyone in this world are not physically fit. Of course you would want them to be fit, but it's no going to happen. These models today are extremely thin, and I feel that just because somone is not a size 0, 2,4, that dose not mean that a particular fashion would not look good on their body. I just totally disagree with that. That is one of the reasons that today's society, these young girl starve themselves becasue the fashion industry protrays that this is sexy. The whole point is to be healthy. I am sorry, even if a obese or overweight woman walked down a runway you will not be distracted from the clothes that she is wearing. If anything you would probably will say to yourself, damn although she is a big woman she is working that outfit. Personally I am a healthy size 14, and heavy bottom ( runs in the family) I work out 4x a week. I have a small waist , toned all over, but society feels that i'm obese because I am not under a size 10.
