Marilyn Monroe was a perfect size 14 - would anyone dare call her fat? She was normal sized, for a woman.

You can be hot at ANY weight - that's what this is about, and to stop the deadly Anorexic trends, which kill you young.

Marilyn Monroe's size 14 would be considered in size 6 in today's world.

People need to start realizing that those stick skinny models that walk the run way are not the average woman. Average women come in all shapes, sizes, heights, etc. and to those shallow men who believe that those women are the epitome of beautiful, you are looking in all the wrong places to find a beautiful woman. The expressionless faces show no personality, and hence further the man's adorned view of a beautiful woman as one that is only useful for sex. Those women don't eat! going back to the traditional ideas of a woman, who cooks, cleans, etc, don't think that the woman who cooks doesn't eat her own damn food and like it too! Its not about the obesity epidemic, it's about showing a healthy image of a woman for how she was meant to look. with curves. Women strive to look like runway models because of shallow men, and it's an unhealthy achievement and also goes against the way a woman is suppose to look.

georgina6, they aren't saying thin isn't real, what they are saying is that they want people who look real. If you are thin, but look healthy (not starved to death) and have an expressive personality, that is exactly what they are looking for. The reality is most clothes look good on thin people, so they need thin people. What they are trying to do away with is the hollow gaunt look.

RAD! So what now instead of a size zero we will see size 2 on the runway - can't wait!!! (those of you who did not catch that, its severe sarcasism)

ugly is one thing, over weight is still un healthy....no doubt this campaign is fully backed by some big wigs in the food industry to fight upserge of healthy trends which for them is "bad for business"

I am actually what most people would call a model because am six foot ten and weight just a hundred and fifty five pounds. Am actually skinny and look real good but honestly am getting out of that skin because the real world out there and real men out there love women with a little more flesh in their skin and beleive me I get side looks everywhere I go but my private life is chaos. No man stays because they want me to put on a little more whereas am all to skinny and fake. I encourage all skinny girls to think more like Jenniffer Love hewitt. You dont have to be a bone frame to look great. I actually admire most of my female friends with a little more skin on them. If people like Trya could encourage a minimum weight for girls to do modeling instead of anorexic girls then I think the clothe factory would get better buyers because they would see REAL PEOPLE instead of thin bones like myself

    It is about time...
Finally long gone those unsmiling and sad faces with unhealthy bodies.

  • Posted By: I'mABigDeal @ 01/30/2008 1:36:30 PM

I think it is sad when the American public try and justify why it is healthy to be fat... Nasty! No wonder why our medical sucks... There are to many people with heart problems along with other problems related to being overweight. I am 23, I have a 2 year old, I work full time and I wear a size 4.

    • Posted By: Sheenami @ 01/30/2008 1:54:16 PM

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it wasn't the AMERICAN public that necessarily started this trend. In Spain, models who did not meet health standards (ie they were to thin) were not allowed on the runways.

I have to agree with georgina6_pink - I am 5'10'' and weigh 150 - I run marathons, compete in triathlons, and count my calories - i am no size 2 but i am no size 14 either. Healthy is beautiful. I fought a battle with an eating disorder in college and became 'scary skinny' - and while people said i looked great. i felt terrible because i was unhealthy. Maybe America as a nation needs to step back and re-evaluate its perception of beauty. I would rather see a marathoner than a fashion model - at least a marathoner has actually accomplished something besides starving themselves. Healthy is sexy and beautiful.

I design clothes for slim and curvy figured. I just don't do anything with the designs, though I would like to.

I know that the average waist size in this country is around a 30'. Which...at a 26" (and being 5' 8") puts me in the severe minority...However, I am sick and tired of hearing about how the model figure is unrealistic...and the scathing comments about being unhealthy, sickening, and unnatural. Any of my friends and family can attest that I eat without regard for caloric intake...and I shun exercise. Women of larger carriage looking for validation and acceptance need to provide the same in return to those of us with smaller frames. (Relativism at it's finest.) Think about all your magazines that tout "Jeans"Jeans for Every size" when they never have ones that fit my particular frame. I can't even buy them in stores. Whilst women with larger frames have ENTIRE stored dedicated to their body style. Now where does the favoritism lie?

  • Posted By: akttmommy @ 01/30/2008 1:53:09 PM

Um...nice try, but 5'9" 250 lbs. is not going to cut it!!! I don't care how you slice it, or dice it (no puns intended) a tall slender woman or man is always going to be the most aesthetically pleasing to the eye...period!!! Let's face it, if any overweight person had to the choice to with a touch of a wand have the body of a supermodel, I am sure they would seize the opportunity!! As far as men go, trust me coming from a woman who knows many men, they don't like fat women, and they are not attracted to a fat body, just like many women are not attracted to fat men... And, yes there are a few out there that have legitimate medical reasons why they are overwieght, but the majority are just victims of their own gluttony...

  • Posted By: Absynthe @ 01/30/2008 1:52:37 PM

One of the reasons the models are so tall, is because you sit down below them, looking UP. Then, they look in proportion. That is why those types of models weren't meant for anything else.

What is normal? or the woman on the street? It is not normal to be fat just because a majority of Americans are obese or on the line. It is their fault for shoving food down their throats and blaming it on food manufacturers and restaurants. No skinny is not good if your not meant to be thin. Everyone has a specific body type and more times then less people eat so much they are unable to find that normalcy. So diet and eat right.

Shalom! Actually, what is considered "plus-size" is close to average American/European size. The term is more of a comparative than anything else. Granted, I have had my moments in the fashion industry as a model and fashion show director/assistant. I have friends that have modeled all over the world. The industry is very biased and hard to take seriously. Think about it....it is art! I love to see unique-looking individuals with wonderful physical attributes. My perspective is more of an artistic one. "Normal" models are long overdue. There are too many pressures from the society/world today. No one needs to feel a great sense of inadequacy because there God-given bodies and attributes are considered "not good enough". Blessings and Divine Guidance!!! Shalom Shalom

I'm sorry to say we shouldn't change the fashion world much--I can understand that the models of today are sometimes unattractively thin. Just have the models gain ten to fifteen pounds and that is it! They are all gorgeous if a bit malnourished, and frankly, i'd rather we had underweight models than overweight models--what kind of image are we promoting then? An obese one is what. America is already a fat country and if anything models drive people, women especially, to loose their excess weight which is good for their health and self-esteem. And I'mABigDeal is right in one respect--models should look good in the clothes. As in sleek and long-legged, not bulky. And as to evelyngarcia's post that average americans are a size 12, that is something that if true, needs to be addressed. No Patcience: if women are SO INSECURE that they feel pressured to loose their weight it isn't because everyone is telling them to do so it is because they WANT to loose the weight and feel better about themselves--tLET THEM!!!! That they let their figures get largely out of control is horrendous and SHOULD be corrected for health reasons, not necessarily for conformist reasons.

This is great. I am really into fashion and I am not skinny girl, I am proud to say that I am size 10/12. But when I watch runways it makes me sick how thin those girls are. Fashion is what you see on street, not on the runway.

I totally agree that we over used over models and that is not okay. Super fat is not good yet super skinny is not healthy neither. It is all about balance. Eat healthy, exercise, take care of ourselves and just have fun! Don't give up on ourselves and give into indulgence though. Understand that we are amazingly unique and beautiful and it is our priviledge to take care of ourselves, not only for the outward appearance but also the inward beauty too. Get real: when we are depressed and lost, when we do not understand our true values, we turn to our society to define who we are and to rate our beauty and value. We are all beautiful and gorgeous in our own way. Find your specialty and dwell into it. Understand that God made you beautifully and he wants you to be healthy in every way.

Whoever wrote that last comment truly is brainless...firstly they are talking about NORMAL people not just as you write "big fat greedy over eaters." Plus...let's be honest...there are several people (possibly yourself) who might be "beautifully thin" but UGLY as hell on the outside and inside...I'd much rather have a beautiful face and a healthy size 10 figure then an ugly mug *** attitude and size 0 waist.
