I am so tired of people who are pencil thin appearing in commercials for clothes. Get real people. Not everyone is a size 4 or less. There are healthy non-overweight people that are size 12-16. That to me is normal. I would love to go to a store and find a pair of pants that fit from the waist and not be a mile long on the leg.

BRAVOOOO!!!! It's about time the fashion industry realized women with curves are beautiful too!! This is a step in the right direction - yeeeah!!!!!

The 'Average' sized person in America is getting absurdly out of purpotioned! Since when is a person who has to squeeze into an airline seat (which only three decades ago was a perfect and roomy fit....the seats haven't gotten smaller, the butts have gotten bigger!) of 'average size'? There's a reason that these models are in the magazines...the vast majority of people believe that they are sexy and beautiful! Don't you think they would use average or even fat people if they thought that would sell even one more of their product?
Why are diets the national craze and the second largest selling item in the US? I'm no fat hater. Heck, I would have to hate myself some if that were the case! But we are a nation of unhealthy overweight bubble butts bouncing down the sidewalk to the E.R. cardiac ward! We need to look at these models and ask ourselves...is size 6 so wrong?

definatley think, curves are better than stick thin". It's the inn" thing to be curvier! Plus i also believe that showing girls on the cat walk that do have shapes not only provide a positive outlook, but also teaches our younger generation that image is NOT everything. last year, being a curvier gurl myself, i went to tryouts for "moniques fat chance" and there i was told i wasn't big enough. Now where do we draw the line....?

As a former full-figure model - I would like to "weigh-in" on the subject - morbid obesity is a term coined by the medical profession to describe people who are 30% over the weight the "weight charts" say you should be. Not all obesity is a sexual or emotional based repression and sublimation - or any other physcological issue - granted, a lot of us bigger people have some serious issues - but not all. There is also heredity, and social upbringing and many other issues.. My family taught me to clean my plate, and our portions were much larger than what nutionists and dieticians prescribe - BUT I am by no means a closet eater or a person who goes to MickeyD's and orders 4 hamburgers and 3 fries plus 2 choc shakes and an apple pie for good luck!
I eat like a "normal" person - as a matter of fact I eat a much more healthy and balanced diet than many of my friends who are not "overweight". It also takes me much longer to lose weight than the average person - I have to cut back more, exercise more for minimal returns.
Now that we have gotten past the stereotyes - the fact that a 5'10" to 6' size 12 woman is considered a "full-figure" model is ridiculous. When I started modeling I was a size 16 and considered too small - the average being an 18W (slightly fuller cut than a missy18) - now everything is flip-flopped. The fashion industry is always making up bizarre rules in regards to sizes, heights, and what is fashionably correct. They can take their rules and dump them as far as I am concerned - I am 5'9", 250 lbs, and a size 22/24 - and I get get many compliments and much male attention (who say I am very sexy and beautiful) Kudos to Ugly Betty for doing a REAL WOMAN Fashoin Show as part of their sub-plot a few weeks ago! I have to say, when I look at the skinny-mini girls on TV and in the ads, and on the Internet - the only thing I can think of is - EAT a SANDWICH for goodness sake!

Viva Real People, Viva Big Girls!! It's your life - live it to the fullest no matter what size you are

    dallergrucci.....

You are an A--!!!! Big Girls will always have thin girl fighting her way out. I don't mind seeing thin models, it is the anorexic models that just make my stomach churn. Eat something for goodness sakes!!!

Too cool, my middle aged average sized body is finally going to be fashionable! I like the fact companies like Dove are promoting "pro-age" products and lingerie companies show beautiful women in plus size bras. I think it is a step in the right direction for all of us to accept and embrace who we are.

I like the fact that people are now pulling away from thinking that designer clothes only look good on rail thin models. Which is quite the contrary. I thiink if a person is healthy and the style, cut, fit and sway of the clothing looks good on the person; then why should people continue to be subjected to frail models on the runway. However, I do think that people have to know their own bodies and what looks good on them.

I eschewed the shallow fashionista years ago...mainly because I found most of the models to be frighteningly, scarily unhealthy looking. I'm all about looking healthy AND happy...great muscle tone and shapely legs are highly desirable on both sexes. The fashionista marquee look of hungry and depressed is so yesterday. I receive several outdoors and athletic oriented catalogs. Two (title nine and Duluth Trader) use real women. realy

This is not about 'body fascism' - personally, if someone wants to eat themselves into an early death...that's your choice. BUT that's the point. WE ALL HAVE THE CHOICE. Five minutes ago I was in the deli...staring at the black and white cookie. Yummmmmmmm. But, then, what does it doe for me if I eat it? Sugar rush + sugar crash. NO BENEFIT WHAT SO EVER. So, the choice was mine. Presently enjoying a BANANA (that yellow fibre filled fruit t hat looks like a banana). And I'm drinking a WATER over the Diet Coke [which is crammed full of unhealthy chemicals that can kill me]. So, I chose the water - that life-sustaining fluid that makes up 90% of my body. So, I know I need to replenish my body daily by drinking lots of that clear, healthy, un-sweetened, natural fluid. I do not buy and will never buy the argument that people are "victims" of the industry. Anyone with any inklining of intelligence knows that a diet consisting of sweets, fried foods and huge portions of those foods and beverages will make your body unhealthy, lead to heart disease, diabetes and ultiamtely death. It's like smoking - you know its bad for you - so if you CHOOSE to do it you are the single person responsible for your decision.

I feel sorry for you and your fiance. Life has a way of happening to people and if you were to lose a breast to cancer, or if you don't age as perfectly as you think you should, you won't be able to cope. If someone struggling with a weight issue sends you over the top, you must not be very secure in your own self image. No, I'm not over weight and have shopped at Express. Is this world not big enough for all shapes and sizes?
People are fighting in wars and there are millions of children who have never known peace. And someone else's weight is what repulses you?

So what, because I am thin I am a not real? Yes, I agree that starving yourself to get thing is not right, but bigger people shouldn't lash out at all the thin people in the world! It's simply not fair. I believe beauty comes in all sizes, and it's time everyone opened their eyes and saw that, instead of trying to uphold just one size, whatever it may be.

Let them do what they want. I can think enough for myself to buy an item of clothing without the size or appearance of someone influencing what it is I really want. I teach critical thinkiing to my children as well. We all end up driven to what we really desire anyways. I think the question at hand is what is in your heart?

I am very glad to see fashion gurus changing their tone about who wears the clothes. I used to be thin like the runway models (shorter) but guess what - life happened. I am 50, 5'4'' , slightly over weight and love fashion. Like many I have a pear shape and get very frustrated when I try to shop. I can always find tops that fit my shoulders, boobs and rib area but once I get past my waist everything is too tight. Why can't they make a cute blouse that tapers so that I can button it down all of the way? And better yet why can't they do that so that I do not have to dress like my grandmother had to?!? I have quit shopping for cloths because I get depressed and stressed and am tired of waisting my time and money. Thanks for getting real!

Comment: A few months ago I attended an open call and was selected along with maybe a quarter of the people there to attend a modeling expo in Detroit. They told me that I would make a great plus size model. I am 5'10", 200 lbs, size 14/16, have a small waist and am told that I have a great smile (and even greater pout). I was 14 years old then. However, I did not see anyone picked as a plus size model. What happened?

    pout) I have

love size 14/16 is not a smalle waist

  • Posted By: sourgirl @ 01/30/2008 1:35:12 PM

Gah, I don't want to see the damn model, I want to see the CLOTHES! Models are 'stick thin and expressionless' for a reason- so they don't distract from the main event. This is just another pointless exercise in political correctness.
