tsooter, i agree with you but even you must know that 5'8" and 130 is stick thin. I'm 5'6" and at 130 I had bones sticking out. I was 21 back then, and def a bulimic. I won't lie about who I am. Granted, we are all different body morphs/bone sizes. You know full well your daughter has nothing to worry about. Sounds a wee bit of a pretentious post, but I still agree with you. At my height, now age 40, and in the 148-152 lb, range, I'm a size 6 to a size 10, depending on whose label I'm wearing. But even I know that I am not the norm among the women my age. Perhaps it is enough just to know the market for women my age is catering to our vanity and sizing clothes differenlty. That's a start. We can all be "models" for our children, at the very least.. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables, don't overconsume, etc. Monkey see, monkey do. Be close to your kids, show your unconditional love and acceptance and they won't give a hoot about those girls in the magazines. I'm all for larger models, but I still don't consider the heavier ones as being anywhere close to being average "like one of us".

isnt that sad the average american is size 12.... thats fat. and thicker that needed the average american should be atleast a size 7-9 maybe 10 that is an ok size. no one likes looking at ppls fat roles and squeezing into items that dont fit. keep the stick figures they make clothes look nice.

If you're fiance thinks that about women now...who's to say he'll stick with you when you get old?

"Real" people as models? Sure, that's gonna happen. If clothing designers want to reduce they're sales they'll use "real" people. Very few models today look like 12 year old boys, nynoah. What models have you been looking at? ajanedo: You're 5'3 175 and you think models are too thin? How nice of you to care about the health of today's models. That's pathetic. Thin models are far healthier than the majority of fat folks in the US. Heathy looking models? So Giselle doesn't look heathy? Models will not change, but you people need to take a look in the mirror and change your twisted ideas of what's healthy.

about time !!! real people should model clothing , Because "half -dead " look is overrated and they would sell more clothing with more realstic people modeling their designs!!!

  • Posted By: ObamaLover90 @ 01/30/2008 1:32:29 PM

I think that would be such a better change for the fashion industry ... becasue being dead like is overrated and people die trying to be "dead- like" look , more realstic people should be models ,get more sales of clothing and whatnot!!!!

If models and movie stars fail to uphold an unattainable standard, maybe America won't buy all the junk products that promise to help us chase this standard. Our economy would collapse and social order would unravel! Unhappiness keeps us lurching forward.

I think this article is a little misleading. I looked at many of his photos after reading this. While he does photograph "real" people on the streets, most of the women are tall and skinny. Is there still a bias in his approach, or is it that only women of a certain size/shape dress according to currently preferred fashion standards? I'm 5'6'" and less than 130 lbs. Not bad for a typical American. However, I saw no one in those photos that looked similar.

it's about time America wakes up. The models look like they are plastic and walk funny, have you ever seen anyone in real life walk like that, maybe if they were drunk but even then.

  • Posted By: nmtgirl @ 01/30/2008 1:31:14 PM

Get real people!! WE don't have to celebrate "fat" people, just make them feel human too!!! I'm proud to be a size 16. Skinny models and people who are openly discusted by my appearance make me feel bad about myself, and that's not fair! I applaude the 'real people" model movement. It's about time that the fashion industry recognize there are people out there that aren't a size 1 or 2. And we are real people with real feelings.

Some of the comments here show what us "real" people are really looking for; some of us it is to fantasize about what we wish we could have or be. Others are concerned how materialistic the society has become, etc. I guess for me, a mother also with children, I care more about what my 15 yr old daughter says about my looks and she's really the critic in our house. I, in turn do the same for her. We don't have fashion mags because our standards are not set by people who get paid to do it. We live our life concerned about the people around us.

Chubby (not obese) PEOPLE who exersize are considerably less likely to develop heart disease than thin people who do not exercise. It should be completely about moderation. You really shouldn't eat at fast food resturants all the time, but conversely, fat is also a necessary part of your diet. You can't cut any food group out without damaging your health. It should be about HEALTHY not any specific look. Women were not designed to be stick thin, but they also weren't designed to be extremely large. Fat women and thin women have the same problems reproducing (ie they can't sometimes). Exercise regularly, include fruits and vegetables in your diet, and yes, even small amounts of fat. Personally, I think we should look more towards athletes than models for our perceptions of beauty. Most athletes know how to take care of their bodies (barring any sort of enhancement chemicals of course).

Most model look so skinny as such people might thought they 've aids, i asume they should eat a little to add weight but not much, because too much skinny make men to be scared of such girls, it may interest u to email for ur comment, my email is: ikpeemma@yahoo.com

Amen, it's about time that they use real people, not plastic sticks that all look like they are starving and walk funny, really who walks like that!

Wait a minute! Your conflation of "eating disorder" with obesity is again disingenuous and not true. You may find it self-fulfilling to and a great rationalization to tell yourself, my BMI is 30, but it's not because I'm lazy habit-driven ans self-indulgent - I have a mental issue, pass me the pizza!

The Centers for Disease Control and any number of public health organizations make CLEAR distinctions between eating disorders and obesity. In fact the eating disorder you mention is fundamentally distinct from America's over-indulgence in food and underindulgence in exercise. Binge eating is usually followed by purging/vomiting as is associated anorexics nd bulimics, not obese people. Your facts are wrong.

Obesity's causes are many but the number one cause is LIFESTYLE. Americans overeat, eat a lot of fat-rich, sugar heavy fast food and are too sedentary. That's not rocket science. I have sympathy for people suffering from eating disorders, I had friends with them it is debilitating and deadly. However, let's not "steal" their diagnosis to rationalize America's taste for overindulgence and sloth. Recent studies have show the negative power of a buddy system, whem social messages "empower" people to stay fat. Fat models won't help.
