WOW??? I can???t think of anything more repulsive than those pictures. When I am trying to picture an outfit on me, the last thing I want to do is see the same thing as a fat girl. In fact, the other day, my fianc?? and I were in Express and the girl that greeted us at the door was so freaking huge that she probably couldn???t even fit in the sizes that the store has to offer. Why the hell would they hire her, shouldn???t se be selling the clothes?? What better way to sell them then to show how awesome they look on?? She couldn???t have done that if she tried!!! I ended up leaving with not a single thing, which is completely out of my character and my fianc?? said that he was so disgusted that he would never go back in that store ever again. C???mon people, fashion is attractive, flirty and sexy, and fortunately (or for the fashion industry ???unfortunately???) fat is absolutely with out question non of those things.

Note to self: Gain weight so that douchebags like the body facsists posting below will have no interest in looking my way...
As to the article; the fashion industry will never intrinsically change, they just pay lip service to "realness" every few years. The engine of the industry is driven by greed which is fueled by misogyny. Foisting any "beauty standard" upon women, whether it's thin, or plush, or anything else that excludes, divides or creates competition among women, is quite simply a misogynist excercise in sexual control.

I THINK LOOKING AT "REAL" PEOPLE FOR A CHANGE WOULD BE QUITE REFRESHING,OBVIOUSLY A HEAVY PERSON WOULD PROBABLY NOT MAKE IT IN THE HIGH FASHION WORLD,BUT WHAT IS WRONG TO A HAVE MORE NORMAL SIZE ,SAY A 6 OR EVEN 8 FOR A SAMPLE INSTEAD OF A 0 OR 2 ??? LET'S SEE AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT THE OUTFIT WOULD LOOK LIKE ON A REAL BODY NOT JUST A SACK OF BONES.....

Agreed that the whole modeling of clothes for all women has become extremely absurd and impersonal!

I am also in the "industry" and find it odd that the general public perceives all models as having eating disorders and using heroin. I can assure you 99% of them do neither. As I mentioned in a previous post that I don't see here - in the case of 'The Sartorialist', yes the individuals shown are "Real People" in the sense that he happens upon them in the street and takes their photo AND that they are regular, skinny, healthy sizes. Most of those shown on his site are 'normal' and the same sizes as those walking the runways.

On the catwalks - and in the photoshoots - they are nibbling on donuts burgers like 'real people' BUT the difference is - and this is what's entirely WRONG with this debate - they are nibbling but they are ALSO exercising and eating whatever they eat in MODERTATION.

A friend recently commented after seeing a weightloss ad on TV that proclaimed "Loose 180 pounds the healthy way." WHAT?!?!?!? If you look at that industry 20 years ago the benchmarks were "Loose 30 pounds the healthy way." That's alarming that this country has embraced the "Stuff your face with the endless pasta bowl at Olive Garden" or "The cheese in the crust double meat pizza from Pizza Hut for $5.99" offers.

THAT IS THE CRIME and THAT IS THE SOCIAL INJUSTICE. Marketers are marketing bigger, fatter, cheaper to the 'normal citizen' and they have become morbidly obese. The Sartorialist is showing normal people who eat normal food. And those featured are the same size as those walking.

I think the fact that GM is designing car seats to be larger to fit fatter Americans or that airlines are making room to squeeze in those individuals is the crime here. We should be teaching HEALTHY EATING AND LIFESTYLES NOT RESIGNING OURSELVES TO THE GORGING OF AMERICANS. And for the record, it is shameful that we want to promote the average woman being a size 16. It is just as unnatural as being anorexic. Precisely the same thing.

"disgusting to look at" is but a commentary on social acclimitazation. IOW, what you are taught is beautiful or appealing to look at, becomes that. Health is not simply a matter of lean jeans, but, rather, a combination of good habits, good mind, and IMO, good heart. And a historical note here, most of the great beauties of the screen (Ava Gardner, Ingrid Bergman, Myrna Loy) not only wore size 10-12 on and off-screen, they also had the courage to look unique without madness.

Thank goodness that someone is finally looking at the average size woman of today in a different light. I don't enjoy seeing all these ultra slim, pouty mouth young women on the catwalk. It's about time for the real woman (in that I mean a regular size of size 10 and up) getting the recognition that they should with the fashion industry. Don't they realize that the average size woman would love to see what they would look like in some of these designer fashions, you can't possibly get any idea from the really, really skinny young girls that are called models today. Ladies, let's make a stand on fashions for the regular woman of today!!

I am a man, so there may be a bit of bias in my posting regarding this topic. Of all the models I've seen, I have not seen one that I would consider attractive. It is almost to the point where it is repulsive. Consider the apposite end of the spectrum; Rachael Ray. She is amazing!! She is beautiful in every way. You don't have to weigh 90 pounds to be attractive. Have a winning smile and a winning attitude and you are set. There is a girl in my office who weighs 155 lbs. I know this because she has told me. She is hot. As long as your healthy and happy, that's all you need.

Average american woman is a size 12 and up and short 5 feet 4 inch. Average women are also on the budget and cannot afford the designer clothes. Fashion trend to put larger women on the runway will not be immediate for many many years to come. I mean even some larger models are skinnier than average american. Fashion is ran by image obsessed people who will not let go of their ideal long, skinny emancipated women on the runway to present their clothes in size 0. No matter how good the idea sounds of putting real people on the runway, let get real about the fact that is just not going to happen.

I agree with letting everyday women model, however, I also understand the advantages of using mannequin-like models on the catwalk as well. Granted they should be at HEALTHIER weights. But the fact that there is a certain unremarkable continuity of faces and shapes strutting down the runway allows for the clothes to take center stage. Having everyday women of all shapes and sizes would prove too distracting. Also, I don't believe the fashion industry should feel pressure to allow obese or overweight women on the runway. That is not a HEALTHY alternative either. Men and women should work on getting themselves to their appropriate weight based on the BMI.

Its strange that someone would be prejudice against someone who has no butt. That lady said its not normal to have a big belly and no butt- but youre wrong. Your DNA decides where most of your fat is placed or which fat cells grow bigger compared to others. Its not like women can will their fat to leave their butts. Most women gain the most weight in their bottoms and thighs. However, there are many women who have very little fat on their thighs and bottom and gain weight around their mid-section instead. These women have to work out three times as hard as women with "bottom fat deposits" and do have many more health concerns but stop the prejudice. The fact is your ok with fat as long as its where you like it. and girls don't get to chose where it goes, In fact women are praised in this culture for being having fat rears. People just don't find certain types of "fat" to be as pleasing as others. But its all fat and extra weight no matter whether its in the hour glass shape or not is unhealth. Women who carry extra weight have joint problems with their knees and hips and gravity starts to pull everything down and in, causing damage to cartilage, tendons and bones. You shouldn't show prejudice towards skinny butt big waisted girls and then praise fat butt'd skinny waisted girls. Its all overweight - you are just prejudice. Your DNA determines where the fat goes, not what kinds of food you eat. Get educated on that before you go writing stuff thats not scientifically factual.

Although average woman in America is size 12 and up they are also very short 5 feet 4 inch or so. Also, average woman cannot afford designer duds no matter how long she is eyeing them. Another thing to consider is that even larger models look skinnier than an average American.

It's about time the fashion industry woke up and started making clothes for the real women of this world. I also wear a size 10/12 and would like to see more models my size on the catwalk so I can get an idea on how the clothes would look on me. The women of today have a right to voice their opinion and I say "Go For It, you lovely ladies of a size 10 and up." Maybe it's our time to shine.

Honestly, I think the issue is what society deems as "beautiful". Up until recently, the tall, skinny girls with big chests and button noses have been on a pedestal, or at least on the magazine covers, as if to say "All women should attain to be THIS". This is impossible, and it would be refreshing to see "beauty" redefined. We are all unique, and that's what makes us beautiful, and society should celebrate this, not shun in! Magazines and the fashion industry are so influential, and have a great opportunity to make the first move in redefining beauty. But I am realistic, and I don't think that short athletic girls with small chests and "big" noses like myself will be embraced by the fashion world anytime soon. But I hope eventually they discover what my mirror tells me every morning... unique is beautiful.

Eating disorders and obesity overlap in some areas but they are in no way the same exact issue. Not all people who are obese have the issues that accompany eating disorders. For children obesity may start simply because the parent(s) overfeed their children or fail to provide nutritious meals. Not because they don't care, but because they may lack education, "convenience" foods are tempting when both parents work and changing what a child eats means changing what the entire family eats (that's hard!). Children are far less physically active than previous generations thanks to many of the technologies that we enjoy - T.V., video games, computer, etc. The belief that "chubby kids will grow out it" only promotes the current trend of childhood obesity! Children who are not taught to enjoy physical activity and nutritious food/sensible meals become obese. We know that about 80% of obese children will become obese adults. The health issues associated with obesity are VERY real. Addressing the problem of obesity is not about puitting kids on diets and expecting them to all be skinny, we just need to encourage them to be HEALTHY.
