Ummm... those are boy's measurements... women's hips are not naturally suppose to be smaller than their waists.
They have been saying this since around 97...when so many died of heroin....that they would work on the thinness and the drug addiction. I read these articles all the time. gay men running (most of) the fashion world will never use women with hips or health. but we will continue to read about this 'new thing.'
Interestingly on "Project Runway" when the designers were asked to create a look for one another's mothers, the only one who was successful was the one who had to design for the slimmest mother. The designers couldn't design for the average American woman (they all came out in moo-moos!)
i for one am glad i have an 8 year old who wants to know why she doesn't look like the girls on the mags, that hard to explain.what do you say (uhh, they get paid alot of money to look sick).then i'm 5/8 and 130 so i consider myself a real person with three kids who i would like to grow up liking themselves and not comparing there bodies to fake people who we can never really look nor would i want them too.so yes its time for a change and let those poor girls go eat a pizza.
Why would I want to see "regular" people when perusing fashion and beauty mags/websites? I see regular people all day long! What's wrong with looking at some skinny gorgeous creature for a bit in the pages of Vogue or on a catwalk? I'm not delusional -- I know I don't look like a model, and that's okay. I don't feel bad about myself just because I'm average. Thank God there are some folks who look unreal -- too skinny, too beautiful, too tall, too whatever! A little escapism never hurt anyone.
real people don't have to be short and fat. models have always been tall and thin.that's why they're "models." I do agree, some of the thinness has gone too far. But have you seen Gisele lately? Do you honestly want her replaced with some average chick? I think not! Come on, we are not all created equal. Let's get over it!
I personally find waif models repulsive. Its people body "personality" that makes them pretty. So use models who exude something special. Maybe a girl with hips or heaven forbid other curves. Really models that look like 12 year old boys just make me think the whole fashion scene is a parody of itself.
Its strange that someone would be prejudice against someone who has no butt. That lady said its not normal to have a big belly and no butt- but youre wrong. Your DNA decides where most of your fat is placed or which fat cells grow bigger compared to others. Its not like women can will their fat to leave their butts. Most women gain the most weight in their bottoms and thighs. However, there are many women who have very little fat on their thighs and bottom and gain weight around their mid-section instead. These women have to work out three times as hard as women with "bottom fat deposits" in fact your often praised in this culture for being fat down there. People just don't find certain types of "fat" to be as pleasing as others. But its all fat and extra weight no matter whether its in the hour glass shape or not. You shouldn't show prejudice to skinny butt big waisted girls over fat butt'd skinny waisted girls. Its all overweight you are just prejudice.
I totally agree that models are too thin, but the opposite of embracing obesity could also be dangerous. Don't think that I am bashing the fat girls, I definitely am one (5"3" and 160lbs). But, I am also a medical student who is alarmed at the rising obesity in children and how it will affect our health. A healthy looking model would be a refreshing change.
Amen to the comment by knitflash. I am certain we have many echos in agreement from the masses of women out there. As for nate_out I suggest you re read knitflash's post. Oh sorry, can you read yet?
personally, I think there's a fine line between ultra-skinny anorexic looking models and "real people." Let's face it, real people don't look all that great in print (the camera really does add weight people). And neither do the clothes. Having worked in fashion for many years, clothes "hang" better on thinner frames. Thin, in fashion, still looks far better than "real." But yes, anorexic is just gross. I say: bring back the days of Cindy Crawford. She was always the ideal woman---curvy but not too thin. Like Tyra Banks is now.
Amen sister! Perfectly said and echos come from many more of us, I am sure!!
I've been working in the "industry" for 10 years now and the pity is that everyday people are convinced that models shouldn't look that way and they all have eating disorders. Most of them eat normal portions and even go to fast food restaurants occasionally. Wait, did you hear that last word, "occasionally". That doesn't mean two or three times a week after work then sitting on your couch watching TV all night and not planning or "doing" any form of exercise ever! What a waste this american ridicule has become, oh yes I mean you(the author) If you are naturally that way then you are naturally that way.
I'm so sick of all of the B.S. in this country. The cure for "anorexia" is a steak. The cure for "obesity" is common sense nutrition and movement. Everything is classified as a disease now so that the medical establishment can treat it with prescription drugs and expensive surgery and prosecute anyone who says they can help with something else. If human beings eat their natural diet they will not get fat-period-end of story. Science can make a study that supports any argument because they constantly quote only a few studies and the studies themselves are usually suspect anyway. Animals do not need scientists to tell them what to eat. They have convinced you that the things your grandparents grew up on before all of these health problems ran so rampant are bad for you and that things the human body was never meant to eat are good for you. As Jack LaLanne said: "If man made it-DON'T eat it!" To set some of you free who are willing to think a little bit try a google search on Dr. Weston Price. Find his webstie full of free nutritional information and realize that it is the truth by using your common sense and brain for independant thought. Sorry for my anorexia comment. I know some of those women are really messed up, but it was funny. Maybe its natural selection for a person who is too stupid or screwed up to realize they should eat to not survive?
The Sartorialist is hardly "real people" as eluded to in this article. Real, yes, in the sense that they are happened upon on the streets of the world - but they are still inherently attractive, stylish and in "good physical form". You will be hard pressed to find ANY individual in any posting since the site's inception that is the least bit overweight or unhealthy.
The average American woman is a size 16 NOT a size 6 or -2 or whatever these models are. So, why would a designer only show skinny models, as they are missing out on the average American woman buyng their stuff. And when are you only a size 2 or thinner? When you are 12 years old. So, come on designers, design for the woman who can afford your fashion, and I hate you tell you - they are not a size 2.
Although the fashion industry's observence of finally seeing the beauty in every day women is welcomed, they would make a more considerable contribution to their ranks if they can establish a zero tolerence level for heroin. It would be a shame to bring in healthly women only to have them slim down to 90 lbs. after several heroin binges.

I think it's about time that some are realizing that reality is far more that a "skinny ( almost near malnutrition)" girl on a catwalk, remember that young people like to mimic what they see in a fashion show or magazine. I like this new aproach.
I myself somewhat have a problem with weight. I am 5'10" and about 265lbs and female. I have recently started going to the gym to improve myself. However even though people diet or change their eating lifestyle for different reasons mine is however because of clothing. They just seem to make prettier clothes for smaller women. It also helps that those clothes cost less then close that are meant for bodily challenged persons. I say to think of it that way as a lifestyle not a diet. I love my body every inch of it and so does my boyfriend. He actually prefers bigger women to skinny women and he's a small guy himself. I just say love your body but keep it the way you want too and not the way people want you to be.
