OMG PEOPLE!!!! Thin does not equal healthy!!!! If you are anorexic, you may look gorgeous and "healthy," but in reality my anorexic and bulimic clients suffer from osteoporosis and they are in their mid-teens, their pulse is in the low 40's, their hair is slowly falling out, their teeth are starting to rot, they have ruined their ability to have children, they are on the verge of congestive heart failure, their kidneys are about to give out, etc etc etc. Thin does not equal healthy. You cannot generally tell how healthy someone is just by looking at their body!!!

    • Posted By: PuppyT @ 01/29/2008 3:27:22 PM

Ok I get it thin does not equal healthy. Are your Anorexic patients really gorgeous and healthy looking? I mean, you just said their teeth are rotting and their hair is falling out. I don't know what your standard of beauty is but that is not mine. Oh by the way there may be fat people out there that are healthier than your anorexic clients, but Fat just is not healthy it isn't. Many diseases are associated with too much fat.

      • Posted By: beige_glitter @ 01/30/2008 4:39:50 PM

well people don't have to be as thin as models to be healthy. the point is that being too thin is a health risk, as is being too fat.

and models aren't "perfect", factor in the make-up, spraypaint, glued on clothes, lights, and computerized details.

    • Posted By: lauren2710 @ 01/30/2008 1:42:34 PM

Brandimike you can't just look at someone and be able to tell if they are anorexic. i dont know how many times ive been called anorexic. I eat anything and everything that i want to eat. i am 5'10 and weight 110. As much as i eat people would expect me to weight 200lbs. anorexia isn't something you can just call every person the walks down the street that is skinny cause in most cases they have no eating disorder at all thats just the way that God made them. The majority of runway models have no eating disorders at all the are just in really good shape and know how to control themselves from over eating.

    • Posted By: Yves Wulf @ 01/29/2008 4:03:52 PM

I think that everyone takes this too personally. World wide through out almost all cultures the exact shape for women emerges. 36-24-36 that is the universal proportion. What it signigies is health. For much of the worl food is not a proplem anymore, Nor is it that women were required to do heave labor in the fields so the "look" changes. The "look" has been a constant. The best indicator of health is waist -hip a smaller waist that hip is now tha t line to see if one is healthy of prone to ill health. There is also age. Recall the meaness against young gymniasts because in female they had not the proble of trying to use a different center of gravity that the older and fully developed female competitor. Not only do females attain height earlier but a 6 foot 13 year old most likely will be thin!! We are talking young women of 12 to 24.
Health is ignored by many of the comments and not all of us can be six feet tall. Weight per se is not the issue I know of gorgous women that weigh more than I (5'10" 175) yet are proportionate!!! How, we tell our congress to subsidize food says more about this issue. In America we eat corn fed beef, fattened chickens fat injected Turkeys and vegatables are so expensive as to be prohibitive.
Using the sated scale (when one fells that they have sated their hunger) healthy food loses. If we were to really be concerned then we would demand grass fed beef and subsidized vegatables. Cheap healthy for you food. Many of the "models are from area were fresh produce and better leaner meat are the norm.

To address the "Political Correct": THERE IS NO GUARENTEE THAT ANY PERSON OF WHATEVER SIZE WILL TREAT YOU BETTER!!! If a person has the unfortunite genetics to be stout and maybe fat she can dress well by following fashion for her, not for someone else. Looking one's best is not out of reach.
Brandimike who said anything about anorexia? And no men cannot be fat.disgusting and make it socially or economically. But men's fashion the suit (actually an offshoot of the 17th century military uniform) shows what good tailoring can achieve. Is it not that the expertise of the tailor, that makes the clothing fit well and the choice of style the works for each individual is whafashion is about and also profit!!
Not that the sizes of today's women's clothing are not just(if ever) fit but to sell!! if we used the size measurments of 1950 we will find that today's size eight was yeaterday's size 14. Why because it sells!!!
Remember, fashion is a business! Why in men's wear do you find overstocks of XXL and S during sale time?? For the same reasons. If there is something about yourself that you do not like change what you can. Work on yourself for your own satisfaction. Be well and healthy!

It just seems like this argument trades one bad habit for another. Real women come in all sizes and I certainly don't want to see it that much reality on the runway. I want to see women with optimal bodies, meaning great tone, minimal obvious life experiences (stretches and scars), non bouncing parts shaking up the garments and perfect smiles. As a designer, I also wouldn't want to use that much more expensive material and larger accessories on a larger bodies all the time so would employ the body type that displayed my item the best for the best price.
We have to begin using our heads to support our bodies and stop looking to the models on the catwalk to make us feel good about our everyday selves.

    • Posted By: PuppyT @ 01/29/2008 3:35:24 PM

I agree. I think the models should be Healthy and beautiful and yes thin. Yes you can be pretty and a little heavy. but then you are not a fashion model. Maybe then you are a model for something else like academic achievement or your poetry or musical ability. Just because someone is thin does not mean they are anorexic, ie: Brook Shields, Faith Hill, etc. Leave Fashion Models to the professionals. Lets be real not every one is pretty but not everyone is smart either some People are furtunate and are both.

      • Posted By: beige_glitter @ 01/30/2008 4:36:44 PM

k one becomes professional because they are accepted by people who think they are "elite".

the popular idea is rarely the intelligent one

if you want to spend your life in a plastic bubble of ignorance, cool. it's fun, it is and I've been there. but after an education, I see the world as a whole. there is so much more important than fashion and makeup and spraypaint. I'd like to see people stop killing their Earth. less hairspray and latex paint, please.

influence is harsh though. maybe we won't all be pressured to use so many chemicals someday. that would mean clothes wouldn't be superglued to runway models.

        uh oh

yes - I think Aphrodite was a Goddess.

  • Posted By: Brandimike @ 01/29/2008 2:25:18 PM

Most women unfortunately cannot achieve the Victoria Secret look or the Sports Illustrated look. And it sucks that we can't, as a society, say that people are ok as they are. The ideal should be women saying "I'm going to live a happy life, eat healthy, take care of my body." For some women, this will mean thinness, and for others, maybe not. We can't spend our lives trying to fight our genetics, it doesn't make any sense. I take care of myself, I belly dance, surf, lift weights, eat healthy. Am I a Sports Illustrated model? Not by a long shot. Can I do anything about it? Maybe if I starve myself.

    • Posted By: timwalsh300 @ 01/29/2008 2:41:11 PM

Brandimike, does simply the fact that you are happy and healthy mean that you or others like you should be a model? I like to play golf and I'm not very good, but it makes me happy. I'll probably never have the touch that Tiger Woods does. But that doesn't mean I'm not OK as a person. It just means I shouldn't be playing golf on the PGA Tour. No difference here with modeling.

      • Posted By: beige_glitter @ 01/30/2008 4:32:37 PM

eh, not true. if your wife/girlfriend oggled Tiger Woods when he did a push up testicle commercial and you had the emotions of a woman, you'd feel different.

  • Posted By: PuppyT @ 01/29/2008 3:05:52 PM

Some People tend to be big, some people tend to be small. Either way it best to eat sensibly and exercise. Doing cardio is good for you even if you are not getting small it strengthens your heart. I am in the middle I am 5'2" and 118 and I have to workout and eat smart or I will gain weight. I think that models are fine if they are naturally thin. Not all men play football like Brett Favre. But we don't but him down and say let's just put some regular guys in. That is stupid.

    • Posted By: beige_glitter @ 01/30/2008 4:31:22 PM

quite true, perhaps this goes deeper.

the economy is run by men, as is the "impossible standard of beauty". this is why men don't have as much ridicule about looks as women do.

oddly enough, women tend to be more emotional and sensitive too. strange.

to each their own genetics, yes.

NOTE TO NoPatience: Don't gain weight, so that DOUCHEBAG idiots like this "anti-body" fascist MORON called, "NoPatience", will gain interest in looking your underweight sickly skinny way and won't foul mouth you for having a real normal voluptuous womanly body, because like the low life ignorant, uneducated, woman-hating subhuman scum that he is, he will wrongfully disrespect real educated women who are respectful body lovers like the many who commented below and above him.

To "NoPatience": Wow, YOU are one serious low life piece of ***, you dirty filthy woman-hating scum of the Earth! Go shove your idiot face into a pile of ***, because your brain is already there. It would suit you well with that dirty foul mouth you have!
With a name like"NoPatience", it's obvious clear we're dealing with a very stupid and idiotic MORON who actually takes the time to leave such an ignorant half-brained moronic comment like this.
NoPatience, you are a "DOUCHEBAG", as well as all other idiots in the world who think like a DOUCHEBAG like YOU! "The engine of the industry is driven by greed which is fueled by misogyny"?? What the f*#%?? What are you, a crazy jack-ass moron?? Wow, NoPatience, you truly ARE a DOUCHEBAG!!
The problem in the fashion industry, because NoPatience is too much of a douchebag and a moron to understand, is NOT greed! The problem is NOT the so-called "misogyny"! The problem is NOT sexual control! The problem is simply that the women in the fashion industry are just too goddamn SKINNY! They're too THIN!! This extremist standard of "thin only" prevents the investment of the real natural beauty of how women are really supposed to look like! THAT is the problem! Women as MODELS are supposed to be more plump and more voluptuous, to emphasize their bodies and curves, which is what NATURALLY defines and TRULY REPRESENTS the REAL beauty of a woman's body! Foisting any "beauty standard", says NoPatience?? There is no "FOISTING" when the beauty standard is accepted and recognized as the RIGHT one, as women who are physically voluptuous, because by NATURE, the beauty standard is and should be voluptuous women! Advertising and promoting a beauty standard is NOT and is NEVER a "foisting" when the beauty standard is the REAL ONE! All this being said, does not mean that we should reject skinny women to work in the industry, but that we should invest in far more voluptuous women for the industry than in skinny women as models.

Fat people are less attractive. It's a fact of life. I've seen people who constantly complain that they cannot change and are the way they are and they say they have "medical issues". Granted, some of these people may, but most do not. My mom lost 40 pounds this year. She went to weight watchers. They teach you not to diet. Dieting is stupid. Just lose weight. It's a LIFESTYLE change. We should all try to achieve whatever our genetics will allow us.

    • Posted By: beige_glitter @ 01/30/2008 4:28:42 PM

that's nice, I hope your Mom knows that you say *** like this, too.

I bet she gained weight after you were born ;D she sucks for that.

I think people should be healthy, and assumptive men that don't understand the different body shapes of different ethnicities shouldn't be the ones to choose what we "should look like" ty

    • Posted By: lilblue4sho @ 01/30/2008 3:47:34 PM

fat ppl are less attractive i've seen attractive "fat " people and i've seen ugly skinny people

  • Posted By: TPeach @ 01/29/2008 3:13:00 PM

Nobody told anyone that we expect the average women to look like this!! Men like skinny women because they are more attractive than fat women. Beautiful will always be better than average. Want to be beautiful? Be better than average. Can't? Stop wanting to be beautiful. Anything else is a lack of self respect on your part. Go do something else with your life, and find an unattractive mate who loves you for you.

    • Posted By: beige_glitter @ 01/30/2008 4:27:11 PM

not only that, but poeple are misconstruing this small fashion experiment as some huge, world altering event that is going to change things forever. larger women have been modeling since before Vivian Westwood's family came to America. it's called greek statues. people are still "supposed to be skinny" though...

stop being selfish and think about the fashion savvy as a whole - many people, many more than you. all different. maybe it's ok that a percentage of those who buy clothes are catered to.

  • Posted By: Yves Wulf @ 01/29/2008 3:25:34 PM

More of the Political Correctness. Fat, pear shaped ugh!!! i hate looking at such It's bad enough watching fat women stuff themselves . Now On the runway? Bad eating and bad genetics and beauty don't mix Soon we will beable to reto-fit the genetic code so why embrace uglyness? I design everthing and look for the beauty of form and function. But, to have this shoved down my throat, another unhealthy. signpost on the way. I am a male who like candy on his arm not pig!1 I know what diabetes and othe diseases look like and it is not pretty. If our art-design -really was worried about our health then vegatable would be 15 cents a pound. We as a people do not put our money and our tax dollars to work for us. Medical estabilshment with half trained doctors ( yes medicine and engineering, need to come together. Plastic surgery is good if done right and being able to eat really wholesome food cooked right is where to start.

    • Posted By: beige_glitter @ 01/30/2008 4:24:48 PM

      lol plastic surgery

you aren't looking for women, you're looking for little boys with sex changes and boob jobs

    • Posted By: lilblue4sho @ 01/30/2008 3:51:38 PM

you said u know waht diabetes look like and it's not pretty halle beery is diabetic and the last time i checked she was very pretty

  • Posted By: HeidiSheister @ 01/29/2008 4:25:30 PM

OMG.. i love plump girls.. i love to send them to tuckafold.com

    • Posted By: beige_glitter @ 01/30/2008 4:23:16 PM

      ew

there are "plump" girls who have no rolls. assumptions are wicked.

  • Posted By: KennyF @ 01/29/2008 4:34:42 PM

This is about health. not beauty standards!

What I fear is that a 5' 8" 190 lbs woman will be "empowered" by this silly assault on skinny models (I like "Zaftig women too) and blow off losing extra pounds. That will be very PC and self-affirming - until they are 57 years old, 50 lbs overweight (after years of bad eating habits and no exercise) and on heart medication with incipient diabetes. If skinny models are "pushing" girls to eating orders, then the opposite will be true. Fat models will "push" girls to be even fatter than they are, and men will follow. 30% or Americans are very overweight and the leading cause of death is heart disease - connect the dots!

By the way to the person who is 5' 9" and 184 lbs, I mean no offense and I do sympathise (I struggle with weight too) but I think your BMI may be too high for your health, I would check that again, a BMI of 27.4 s too high and halfway to obese.

    • Posted By: beige_glitter @ 01/30/2008 4:22:03 PM

as a man, that's fine for you to ponder this.

as a woman, I'll tell you how little I give a *** about the morons on the magazine. I like the clothes. I will wear what I think looks good on me. I won't change my weight about it.

the reasons I will decide to change my image are: parents, the influence of my friends and boyfriend, television, pornography, death metal, and discounts at the gym.

      honesty.

  • Posted By: afof9fan @ 01/30/2008 3:05:41 PM

You don't get it ,What good is it to appeal to people who want to be seen the same as they are? Being thin and good looking is something to strive for not reject as being un-normal.Overweight is not good for you and too thin is not good ,but attracting people to a product is business.Who would buy a product endorsed by Roseann or Rosie Od,if it made made you look like them? If your child is over weight you need to do something about it when I went to school there was a fat girl or boy in class but not a class full of them, where has PE gone in school we went 3 times a week ,no whinning and no excuses for not participating in sports everyone did it.

    • Posted By: NoElleNo @ 01/30/2008 4:22:00 PM

Well- if the women are shaped like Rosie O'D what's the problem with that body type advertising the product? People like to see their likeness when they are shopping. I am skinny and a size 2-4 so Rosie O'D is not going to work for me juxt like Mary-Kate Olsen won't work for the larger woman. That's just common sense. Again, if WE are buying the clothes WE should market them.

  • Posted By: herbismetoo @ 01/29/2008 5:22:02 PM

the one good thing about proffesional nice looking model's, is that it take's you away from the grim reality of a world of greedy self absorbed obese Americans, who do nothing but eat, and sit, and eat some more.. And quite frankly if any man tell's you he like to look at fat women, (except for those who buy those fatty erotic magazine's) in a bathing suit he's lying, but leave it to the USA instead of losing weight, create a market to accomadate it. yuck !!!

    • Posted By: beige_glitter @ 01/30/2008 4:20:15 PM

also, I would find it very difficult to take the entire United States along with me when I jog, swim, play soccer, etc.

    • Posted By: beige_glitter @ 01/30/2008 4:19:23 PM

then "yuck" at Italy for their fat opera singers, too

and "yuck" at you for being assumptive.

it is unqise to be of either extreme. remain healthy and move around.

as for using this to put down America - that is pitiful. America's greed and politics are reason enough to hate it. it is not the women, though. men DO like a variety of women here. thin, skinny, fat, blonde, hispanic, etc.

if you want to blame all women for this one designer's idea to use larger women for his advertising campaign, then that makes it obvious why you have such horrible writing skills.

  • Posted By: writergal8 @ 01/30/2008 4:09:14 PM

Marilyn's measurements were 35-22-35 (dressmaker's claim) or 37-22-36 (studios) at about 5'5 1/2". According to 2008 Banana Republic size chart standards, she'd be size 6-10. But since Banana sizes generously, she's more likely to be a 4-8 (I'm "SUPPOSED" to be size 2 at Banana, but I can be as small as 00!)

    • Posted By: Existential Blues @ 01/30/2008 4:19:54 PM

That's got to be incorrect. The "perfect" figure is having your bust and hips the same measurement with your waist ten inches smaller. That's pretty difficult to achieve. Marilyn Monroe was gorgeous, but I don't think she could boast a 22 inch waist. She looked too big for that.

  • Posted By: virginian @ 01/30/2008 4:17:14 PM

Marilyn Monroe Built Like a Woman of Today?

According to her official website, Marilyn's statistics were:

    Height: 5 feet 5 1/2 inches
    Weight: Varied, 115 - 120 lbs.
    Measurements: 37-23-36 (Studio's Claim); 35-22-35 (Dressmaker's Claim)

According to several sources sited by snopes.com:

    Height: 5 feet, 5?? inches
    Weight:118-140* pounds
    Bust: 35-37 inches
    Waist: 22-23 inches
    Hips: 35-36 inches
    Bra size: 36D

*defined in the article as "extreme" estimate

If a woman of today has these measurements, I don't think anyone is going to define her as overweight. Nor do I think these measurements are typical of the average American woman of 2008.

many of my clients were chubby as children, and then a doctor told them they were fat, and now they are almost killing themselves by self starvation. there isn't anything wrong with a chubby kid. it doesn't necessarily mean anything. many kids who are chubby, will grow up totally healthy, as long as no one puts them on a diet.

    • Posted By: beige_glitter @ 01/30/2008 4:15:49 PM

one can die from either extreme.

  • Posted By: KennyF @ 01/30/2008 10:30:59 AM

I do have women near and dear to me and I respect them as people, not objects. I also love them enough to want them to have a long, healthy and active life. Just as my wife takes the dessert out of my hand and makes me put back the extra serving, I hope that she makes choices about her body based on health, not image (as I love her in whatever shape she is).

However, if you love a diabetic enough to tell them not to eat sugar, why can't you do the same for an obese person? The alternative to a 200 lbs woman is NOT a 99 lb model - it's a healthy adult with a BMI under 25. Americans have a genius for two things: self-indulgence and self-deception, and nowhere is this more evident than in the country's dietary and exercise choices.

    • Posted By: beige_glitter @ 01/30/2008 4:14:46 PM

validity is included in your statement, though one grows tired of the overassumption that all americans are a certain way.

      be healthy, yes.

one thing ALL people ALL over the world don't do is this:
-take deeper breaths (your brain needs it!)
      -drink more water
      -walk more, drive less

I am a female 5' 10" in great shape. I weight 149 lbs and wear a size 10. I promise you that ny husband and other men I know do not think I look disgusting. You are way off the track on your comments. Someone has convinced you that any size larger than a single digit is obese. Absolutely not true. I have a healthy BMI of 21.4. I have maintained my weight for many years and am very happy "as is"

  • Posted By: tiger_gumby @ 01/30/2008 3:06:06 PM

Everyone is going to have their own opinion about what looks good. Haha, and there's obviously a lot of shallow people here. I'm more concerned about what is being sold in the stores than what is on the runway. At a lot of the stores that most of us can afford to shop at, the clothes are made really really small. I think that's what gets to the teens more than the pictures they see. Maybe instead of changing the sizes of the runway models, or in addition to, they maybe need to make changes to the sizes of the mannequins.

    • Posted By: NoElleNo @ 01/30/2008 4:07:54 PM

Funny you should say that....every store I go into the clothes are all cut large...even the 0-4 are all larger than they were when fashion was REAL and about women being beautiful and looking sharp; not about rail-thin, unhealthy, waif-like, heroine chic or whatever it is now. Everything looks cheap and drawn-up like it was washed in the wrong temperature, faded or just plain raggedy. Why should a pair of jeans that cost $2.00 to make cost me $80.00 and look like they've been run over by a truck?
I just want clothes; I do not need to make a statement or be the poster child for a designer. If we are society we need to demand what works for us!!
