I would be curious to see a line item list of what each person here posting has eaten over the past week.
And how many smoke cigs. Being truly honest about the things they consume. I would suspect, that in many instances we would see lots of processed foods, fast food, sugary sodas, candy, and cigs. IF any of us are eating abusively and are feeling 'bad about their body image' then the debate ends there. We each have a responsibility to our health, our lively hood and those in our lives who we love to take 100% ownership of how we treat our own bodies. If we gorge we have no one to blame but ourselves. This is exacatly the same as anyone of us who starve ourselves, vomit, take diet pills or use other abusive means to loose weight. PEOPLE NEED TO OWN IT AND GET REAL.

I think that is bs. Not all people are meant to be skinny. Their frames are made different and you cant say that they are unhealthy. If you look at the research, it has been 5'1 200 pound women that were healthier than a naturally skinny woman that did no working out or eating healthy. The world needs to understand that everyone is not meant to be the same so stop promoting that everyone should be. I can tell your not a pereson who will date a heavier set person. Only those who discriminate against it are insecure about themselves. Take a reality check! Life is made up of all types of people and we should promote that.

spoken with intellect and grace. right on!

psychologically, the expressions of most people here are indeed from deep inside themselves.

Yes, I totally agree and I am happy to report that I eat field greens--buy them buy the pound--and put walnuts, apple, carrots, chicken, tuna, you name it, and eat that almost every day. Italian pane bread dipped in olive oil, whole whet spaghetti, red wine, eggs, peacehs, pineapple, V8....grilled chicken......I saw your post about the bananna and water choice you made and that made me happy. I agree with what you say here, and ciggies are nast.

OK, I had BK last night, fish for lunch, oatmeal for breakfast. I take my vitamins, go to the gym, and also run. I do not really watch what I eat either. If I want pie, I eat pie.

Please tell me how a size 0 or 2 woman isn't "real." I certainly feel real. I certainly feel that I exist. If I'm not real, then what am I? Or do short women not count as "real" women either? I've noticed that height is almost never addressed when it comes to "real" sizes.

  • Posted By: Diametric @ 01/30/2008 2:13:53 PM

    Ornot-
You are rude and have no right to say that. I am a plus-sized girl, and not all fasion looks like a trash bag on me. I know how to work it and strut it. The world isn't changing to make US feel included, it's changing to become more real. Not everyone is skinny, not everyone is fat. I do not need to feel included in YOUR world that is so small, you can only see your own size. I live in something called the real world.
I am proud of who I am and glad that people are begining to see that not all that's skinny is pretty. It might not be 'okay to be overweight' in your skinny world, but there are a lot of people who are happy with who they are.
Being overweight should not exclude us from the rights of fashionable clothing, but we don't, at the same time, need people to feel 'sorry' for us.
Besides, if I wanted, I could make a trash bag look way better on me than on someone who can get confused for a post.

Ah you guys are no fun and niether is this article. I am a white collar working male baby boomer and all those epxressionless thin models who never really sold anything to real people were at least nice eye candy. If I want to see real women then all I have to do is call a meeting of my staff...gee, thats sounds fun. The world is becoming too uptight. Whats next, 40 year old housewifes in Playboy. Yes. Lets get rid of all those fake goddesses and put real women in the centerfold.

    • Posted By: jeane_wm @ 01/30/2008 2:55:06 PM

Are you sure your collar is not blue? I doubt the women in "your staff" would be pleased if they only had men like you to look at, but I'm sure they have enough class to view you in that light. Please learn to differentiate; women in playboy want your "little boy" attention, women on runways want you to buy thier clothes, and women in "your staff" are probably their simply to work! You should go try to grab some of that "uptight'ness running around!

    • Posted By: jeane_wm @ 01/30/2008 2:37:57 PM

Are you sure your collar is not blue? I'm sure the women in "your staff" would find you repulsive if they only had guys like you to look at, but they probably have enough class not to see you in that light. Also idiot, fashion'istas don't have you ("real people"haha) in thier sight as the targeted audience, if they did they wouldn't charge hundreds of dollars for thier products! You should try to grab'hold of some of that uptight'ness going around!

    • Posted By: dynadoan @ 01/30/2008 2:13:39 PM

To Nevada86, you need to get a life man, better yet go call a "staff meeting" ever heard the song I'm so much cooler on line?

Though I agree modeling is about the clothes. Women should have some curves. Since ancient times they were never potrayed to be stick thin (not even in western greek civilization).Look at art history paintings for instance.. Marylin Monroe far from stick. In anycase, for all you men out there who like the idea of a size 0 imagine the discomfort of feeling bones when your intimate.

    • Posted By: moreu84 @ 01/30/2008 2:53:14 PM

Well apparently according to some of the idiots posting on here, curvy=fat. That is so not true but this whole thing is stupid. No one has the right to judge anyone. I am not skinny but I am not fat. I do have curves but my body is toned, not flabby. I play sports and I work out but its all about lifestyle and genes. My brother looked like Devon Sawa in High School but he has had some problems with his thyroid so now he is a little on the chunky side but he is still handsome. Everyone needs to grow the f up and learn to take accountability for your own actions and quit being so quick to judge people. Both thin and bigger women are beautiful. Its how you carry yourself and how you take care of yourself. I am leaving this site though because some of these posts are infuriating.

  • Posted By: patrayceluvdance2007 @ 01/30/2008 2:19:15 PM

I also agree, that saying curvy (when really your fat) is just as worst and damaging as saying "thin is in". The definiton of curvy is being sexy and having an hourglass shape and having a full healthy body. But IT DOES NOT MEAN FAT.

    • Posted By: beige_glitter @ 01/30/2008 2:53:08 PM

hmm fat people can be curvy

perhaps "rattling crackwhore" isn't the best way to describe one of your precious models, either. so people choose "thin".

everyone has their own opinions, the world is catering to more than one for once. you've always had things your way, get used to change.

  • Posted By: mshainraque @ 01/30/2008 2:20:30 PM

I agree with seven_7. Clothes look good now because they are hung on neutral, thin woman. The day I see a big fat woman or man strutting down the aisle with designer clothes on is the day that clothes will start looking unapealing.

    • Posted By: beige_glitter @ 01/30/2008 2:51:50 PM

mhm and they look good on you of course?

perhaps clothes on broomsticks don't appeal to all. this is where you learn that not everyone in the world follows the same little brainwashed trend you do, oh my!

yeah I don't mind seeing a variety of shapes for clothes I'll get. though I usually try clothes on to see how they fit me....

      yeah

    • Posted By: r1e1d7s @ 01/30/2008 2:40:01 PM

No clothes will not look disgusting.....i do think you should eat healthy and excersize but not all of us are thin some have big bones that make them look bigger even though they eat healthy and excersize because they do look big other people put them down

  • Posted By: dralafi @ 01/30/2008 2:51:02 PM

Has anyone ever read the series Uglies? I think maybe it was a bit prophetic, about at least one of it's themes, if this conversation is any indicator. I think people are just getting tired of only one definition of beauty, or one definition of "family values" etc. I think this is a critical step in the fashion or business world, but it has to go a step further in recognizing that there doesn't have to be a difference between "real" people, and "beautiful" people. It's perceptions of beauty that need to change, and a recognition that reactions to a particular body type do not have to be governed by any real or perceived evolutionary perception of healthy or good.

queen. You unintentionally make my point from my previous posts here. You say that you would shoot yourself if you were the size of my wife. Yet you seem to consider YOURSELF the object of unfair and cruel criticism.

get over it. its pretty to see bones. lovely to see a few ribs
    this is fashion, people.
    sex and skinny.
yea. i wish i could change it too. but you can't.

    • Posted By: beige_glitter @ 01/30/2008 2:50:09 PM

ugh and learn proper english...a lot people are seeing this. it's like your spraypaint got smudged before a photo shoot lol

    • Posted By: beige_glitter @ 01/30/2008 2:49:21 PM

cool, then YOU get really skinny and model. or just be a hypocrite.

the world, believe it or not, wasn't made for you. just because you are material and trendy doesn't mean it's all for you.

so, for the majority of the Earth that aren't six feet tall, we like it ;D

    • Posted By: theworldasicit @ 01/30/2008 2:29:42 PM

It's pretty to see bones? are you serious? I am sorry but I think that is sick and those people are the ones that we have hurt by telling them that you must be as skinny as you possibly can or your not beautiful. Real women have curves! Deal with that

I'm so sick of the whole "Big is Beautiful" mantra constantly shoved down our throats by insecure overweight people (mostly women) trying to change our perception of what is normal. It's this perspective that is turning this country into a bunch of lazy, fast-food eating cows. I am not saying that everyone should be rail thin, but many of you commenting on here are misinterpreting the article to mean we are soon going to be seeing Gigantor strutting down the catwalk. The fact that an average american is now proudly a "size 12 - 16" is truly alarming.

  • Posted By: cynthea @ 01/29/2008 1:27:45 PM

I was a model from 12 - 30 yrs of age. I spent the entire time trying to manage my weight and it fuctuated from 84-90 to 110-115 and there ewere many times that my agents or managers would tell me to lose or gain 20 lbs. and I did whatever they said to do even if it meant I would be very sick for weeks. I modeled everything from evening gowns to bikines(no nude) but never made the "runway" look as I am only 4'11". I am 37 yrs now and I have a wide range of health problems that I am now walking with a walker and cane. ItI have thyriod which when I was diagnosed I quit my con well I did not resign my contract for razorback drums and did not return to modeling ever scince. I have osteoporosis, degeneraitive osteo arthritis, spurs in my neck and back, I have Lordosis of the lower spine and slipped and detereiorated discs. They have now diagnosed me with rhuemetiod artritis along with that I have had crohn's diseaese for quite some time. My doctor of 23 yrs. tells me and warned me about my excesseive dieting and I did not listen and now I am suffering needlessly at such a young age and I hope if I even help just one young girl today escape this pain that I have done my job. It is not worth it for anyone young or ehem' mid aged to diet and worry about your weight so much it is a 24 hour jub to be a model like that and it's all you do is think about it. It's not worth it when you can only enjoy it for a little while. Gravity always happens it is inevitable but what will you do when you're in my shoes and can't walk or enjoy life much I still have all of this energy but I can't do anything with it and will never work again. Please be careful how much you diet and for how long.... I pray to to God that the modeling inndustry will accept these other beautiful women into their industry and and let every taste be satisfied. Not just the super lean sickly look but the healthy and different sized looks also. I know when I did Muscle and Fitness magazine I gained 20 lbs for that photo shoot and I look back and I love those pictures the most. And also to those aspiring to model remember that the traveling, the late night and early morning photoshoots and leaving 10 min. later to catch a flight to another location is really hard on your body too. Like I said it is a 24 hour job and I know how hard it is to want to look certain way but I can for one say it is not worth it. I miss walking and my doctor said if I hadn't lived the lifestyle that i did I would have been able to walk for about another 10 to 25 years.... SADNESS

Wow, Cynthea! You have really paid a high price for looking like a model! I switched from whole milk to skim milk and low fat milk when I was 13. I went from 120 to 102 (or 98 for a week!) by eating less and doing a few exercises every ngiht. I wore a size 8. This was back in 1970-72. I never made it to 5'4", and I believe it was the lack of vitamin A and D that did it (I should have been 5'6"). I never got all the health problems you have, but I did have heel spurs, allergies, and skin problems. Then I started reading the articles on the Weston A. Price Foundation's web site, and also the Price-Pottenger Foundation's web site. I saw a letter that Dr. Price wrote to his nieces and nephews advising them on how to feed their children. One major point that stuck with me was that the children need the butterfat in whole milk to develop normally, and they should not be made to drink skimmed milk. Well, I had a 5-1/2 year old child and decided that we needed to switch from 2% milk to whole milk. After doing that, my heel spurs started going away (they are totally gone now!), my allergies reduced to practically nothing (no more allergy meds and cough drops and Aleve every day!), and my dry skin went away. The only supplement I keep around is cod liver oil, a good source of preformed vitamin A, D, omega 3 fatty acids, EPA, and DHA (which they are now added to baby formula). There is a hidden epidemic in this country of low vitamin D, and I believe that getting more D (and A and the rest) was what helped me turn around my health issues. My daughter and I both gained strength, energy, and stamina after we switched to whole milk. Also, her temperament improved, and she outgrew 2 pair of shoes between January and May of 2002. Before that, she had been able to wear one pair of shoes from August to May.

No doubt The Sartorialist is the breadwinner of this new 'street-style' trend, but he caters to such a high-end NYC-market. And that begs the questions, is that even realistic (to say, middle America, etc)? BET (blogger: sP) has followed this trend for the black community and given it some interesting flavor, making it consumable for all young types. Check it out at : http://blogs.bet.com/lifestyle/swagger/

obesity (and related problems) is now the #1 killer in the U.S. I don't know if we need to be promoting that big is beautiful if it is so unhealthy!

Fashion ' trys' to dictate what women are 'supposed' to look like and wear. Most of us don???t try to look like a twig. Lots out there labeled as fashionable looks terrible on a regular, average woman. There was a time that clothing was really beautiful and wonderful to wear. Fabrics were grand; construction was impeccable, now it is just thrown together for the most part... Bring elegance back!
