No doubt The Sartorialist is the breadwinner of this new 'street-style' trend, but he caters to such a high-end NYC-market. And that begs the questions, is that even realistic (to say, middle America, etc)? BET (blogger: sP) has followed this trend for the black community and given it some interesting flavor, making it consumable for all young types. Check it out at : http://blogs.bet.com/lifestyle/swagger/

As someone that works in healthcare I agree with you, kbalt, but at the same time I would say that there is a point where it stops being heredity and becomes a problem of depression, laziness, giving up or just plain not knowing the healthy way to eat. I am not saying this is everyone but I have seen a case of each. I am not by any means saying that being to thin is ok nor am I saying being overweight is ok or wrong, I to beleive that you body will only allow you to be a certain size.

Obviously the individuals who have posted this do not realize that not ALL people can be a size 1,3,5,7....Just because they wear a size 14 does not make them "fat" or "Chubby" or "Unhealthy" This is the problem with today's society, it is all about being skinny and beautiful (GQ or Supermodel Beautiful) Get a grip on the world and quit judging those that do not look like you or who are not "perfect"!!!

    • Posted By: beige_glitter @ 01/30/2008 2:44:52 PM

yes, but I don't like that people assume supermodels are "perfect". they are not. everyone has their opinions and their types. if we didn't, Aphrodite would not have been drawn as a luscious curvy woman. a man drew than. but that was before societies influence got us..

this "rise of the real people" doesnt mean for fat people to jump and rejoice(probably cant jump anyway), it isnt about you. quit looking for reasons to feel satisfaction in being fat and nasty....and unhealthy and disgusting. imagine if you just lost some weight, you would "feel" healthier and want to be active. fat people die faster, no need for debate, that simply is whats up. slim, active, healthy people who can actually use their bodies actively will outlive you. plain and simple. being fat is a choice, choose not to stuff your face, it wont make you prettier, it just adds more jelly to your already gelatenous, fat, nasty body. basic review of what we just covered: fat is nasty, quit stuffing your face, get a gym membership, fat is not cool, its disgusting. so the moral of today's discussion: im glad im thin and desirable and not fat and nasty. peace! or for you fat people, piece...of cake! lol..ha ha...whoo...good times, good times...ok im done this time. PEACE!

You are a real idiot. That is the most ridiculous, moronic and nonsensical comment I have ever heard (that means stupid, in case your simple mind is confused by those big words) and I am embarrassed for you. Being overweight may be unhealthy, but do you think snorting cocaine and vomiting after each meal is? You may be thin but I think you are a waste of space. Oh, and before you comment back, I am also thin, I just happen to be intelligent enough to realize beauty is not limited to a size 2.

      • Posted By: beige_glitter @ 01/30/2008 2:35:04 PM

so do fat people come and ask you to look at them, or is it your CHOICE?

you have a CHOICE, too. don't look. look at your higly dignified models. what does it do? are you smarter now that you've seen a giraffe in a dress? do you dress better because the companies tell you what to wear? what have you truly gotten from seeing some thin models?

if seeing a fat girl model bothers you so much, you should seek help.

if you were what you wanted to be, maybe you wouldn't have to try and change others'. change YOU, that's what you can do.

Wow...this person has some serious issues with bigger people. It's really easy to sit behind a computer screen and just type away...but I will bet you anything that this person would be scared to death to say anything even close to this to a bigger persons face. Having a weight problem is one issue, but making an azz out of yourself and showing that your I.Q. must be the same size as your pants is a whole other issue. When your skin is sagging off of your bone showing nasty body...you will wish you had some fat to put in there to make it look better!

To Fatisdisgusting: I am FAT and wish I were thin. I do not sit around eating cake, candy or cookies, I go for hearty walks everyday. I eat well balanced meals and very rarely eat out. My doctor tells me my health is outstanding (except my weight). I also would prefer to see beautiful models. I also wish I looked like them. But I don't. So you may dislike me for being fat, but you're too late...I've dislike me for years. Does that make you happy?

        • Posted By: beige_glitter @ 01/30/2008 2:32:38 PM

the people who don't understand where you are coming from are too ignorant to get it. I feel you, and you are very wise and thoughtful. Apparantly thin girls are fine with skinny models for decades, but if things change, they can't deal. Well learn to airheads. Life is about change, and if any of these white out for brains think they look exactly like the model they want to buy the clothes of, then they have vision problems.

Fashion ' trys' to dictate what women are 'supposed' to look like and wear. Most of us do not choose to try and look like a twig, thank goodness. Lots out there labeled as fashionable looks terrible on the regular, average woman. There was a time that clothing was really beautiful and wonderful to wear. Fabrics were grand; construction was impeccable, now it is just thrown together for the most part... Bring elegance back!

Wow, are you for real!!! There are beautifull girls out there with a little chubbieness. Alot of which get there chubbieness from dirtbags like you who inpregnate girls who are stuck with the weight of having a child. You need a reality check!!!!

    • Posted By: melody0026 @ 01/28/2008 1:58:04 PM

Are you kidding me? Get a check on reality dude and an education!

  • Posted By: jada3007 @ 01/30/2008 2:36:29 PM

To me curvy is a girl who has true curves. A woman like Queen Latiffa, some one that is beautiful and proud of who she is. Curvy is more than an hour glass figure, is a girl who is a size 10, 11, 12 even ,yes, a 16. You can be sexy in any size as long as you are healthy and feel good and proud of who you are. If you wear the right clothes to fit your shape! Our next generation will be of people that are health savy and proud of who they are no matter what size they are!

    • Posted By: writergal8 @ 01/30/2008 2:42:14 PM

But that all depends on your height, doesn't it? A woman of 5'4" will look curvier at a smaller size than someone who is 5'9". You may also be interested to know that the larger the size, the smaller the waist-to-hip ratio. Check out my post at Shorty Stories:

    • Posted By: moreu84 @ 01/30/2008 2:41:27 PM

Amen, I agree with you 110%!

  • Posted By: chibixholic @ 01/28/2008 1:54:02 PM

It's good to hear that "normal" people are more like models right now because it's justifiable. I think that "normal" and "real" people are more beautiful than skinny models out there. That's why I love shows like 'Make me a Supermodel,' because they actually pull real people from auditions to be on that show!

    • Posted By: beige_glitter @ 01/30/2008 2:42:00 PM

      right on

while I don't want everyone to "get fat", I don't want women that aren't horridly skinny to hate the way they look.

anyone who doesn't sympathize with that is either kidding themselves into thinking they look like the models, or just ignorant.

also, who is supporting fashion mags? not just thin girls.

???Real Woman??? a funny phrase, a phrase that divides women. Real woman come in every shape, size, color and what have you. It???s a shame that woman let a male lead industry rule their lives. I am appalled at some of the comments where self love and pride for however your body looks to be turn into a battle between think and thin. There is nothing wrong being neither a size 2 nor a size 16 for that matter, as long as you are healthy happy and satisfied. It is terrible how we women let over sexed male egos split us. Why do we have to take offense against each other? Do my bigger sisters understand the trauma and stress these ???super models??? deal with on a daily basis? And thin chicks, do you understand the stress bigger woman suffer because there are not meeting the perceived ???standard of beauty???? I am a woman size 10, 5???6??? 165lbs; I fluctuate like any normal woman, putting on water, flexing from 8 to 10 to 12, but I am healthy. I am beautiful, wanted and LOVED. We need to stand together and fight for all body types because we need to create a place where our daughters can grow up with healthy body image regardless if they are a size 2 or 14. The time has got to end on the skinny-fat hate and transform on love for all body types. Its time for a change, for run-way, pageants and dolls alike to sport different images of Beauty. We need to stop the cycle of self hate and heal each other by standing together for the next generations of women to come.

Thin is not always in! It used to be that only thin people could be models, and now the field is opening up to all sorts and sizes. A friend of mine makes bank glamourgirlcollection.com and she is a little plump. She models for the likes of target, and other department stores and have even shot some commercials. Glad the world is changing in this respect

I find this very one sided.
Has anyone ever stopped to think that more than half of the "expressionless" "skinny" models can't help but look that way? I feel that calling someone too skinny, when that is how they naturally are, is just as hurtful as calling someone fat.

If these models are healthy and like the way they are, there is no need to bash them for the sole reason that heavier women are jealous. Honestly, would you rather be a size 4 or a 14?
Being a size 12 does not make you a "real woman." Last time I checked, the women who wear a 0 do in fact show normal signs of being legitimit humans... like that breathing/walking thing.

I'm a size 6, 135 lbs and could be a little smaller. I'm not saying you have to be a 2 to be attractive, but I'm saying health is important.

    • Posted By: cslsx4tish @ 01/30/2008 2:39:05 PM

It sounds like you are saying you need to be small to be healthy! I'm a size 8 at 145lb but I am also 5' 8", I think I look damn sexy and I am healthy too!

  • Posted By: deja11999 @ 01/30/2008 1:38:11 PM

I see nothing that they continue to use skinny models since these are the only skinny ppl that exist in america. for ppl wearing a size 12/14 you should hit a gym so then you wont hate on skinny ppl.

    • Posted By: GTO Judge @ 01/30/2008 1:44:02 PM

Deja....I AM a size 12 who works out at the gym for 2 hours, 6 days a week.
My parents were both over 6 feet tall and over 200 lbs, so I have pretty much reconciled myself to the fact that I'm never going to be a size 2.
Health is more than the number on the scale....

      • Posted By: moreu84 @ 01/30/2008 2:39:00 PM

GTO Judge...thank you! Working out doesn't benefit everyone. There are a lot of factors that come into play when it comes to weight and being healthy. Being a size 12/14 does not make you fat or unhealthy. I wear a size 16 and I am actually quite toned. Well I also have big boobs. To: Deja...come out from under your rock. There are many skinny women out there, some who are incredibly unhealthy, due to jackasses like you telling women that are bigger then a size 4 that they are fat. Your probably a twig and are hating on us bigger women because we look like REAL women and have the kind of curves real men love. You can keep your GQ judgmental arrogant little boys, but eventually they will come out of the closet and there will be nothing left. I'll stick to my men that enjoy a little more cushion for the pushin!

  • Posted By: rip2632 @ 01/30/2008 2:38:31 PM

IT is about time that real people are used in all ads, not just fashion. No real woman looks the way they do on the runways and the use to drugs and starvation to stay that way is not worth the result. Talk about an unhealthy lifestyle. People are tired of being compared to these wafes. For my part I want a real woman, who has personality and compassion. A woman or man is much more than the exterior and it is time the rest of the world realizes it.

  • Posted By: vickio63 @ 01/28/2008 2:39:01 PM

I totally agree that showing overweight models is a step in the wrong direction. Being fat isn't okay - it's unhealthy and killing people off. Not to mention what it is doing to our health care costs. We're criticizing the current models for smoking themselves skinny - I'm not sure someone who is eating themselves in to oblivion is any better. How about healthy, normal weight, athletic looking people? Now that would be a good example for our kids!

    • Posted By: beige_glitter @ 01/30/2008 2:38:30 PM

I don't think that allowing plus size women to purchase clothes that fit well is going to doom the earth as far as obesity.

first of all, if you feel good about yourself, you are more energetic. energy is what supplies saratonin...

there's skinny-fat people, too. those are the people at rist for diabetes and heart failure, but they've always been thin, so they suppose that because they're thin, they're healthy.

exercise is healthy. not exercising just to be thin, but to improve heart function and blood flow.

also, no one is actually as stupid as (well either you or what you presumed..) that. who would mock fashion magazines to the point of altering their life??

  • Posted By: kbalt @ 01/30/2008 2:37:01 PM

People are so worried about what other people look like that they forgete that why they are saying rude and damaging cooments, there are people in their family that are overweight. How can we really know whats overweight? Some doctor decided to put together his perfect woman and then present to the world what every person is suppose to weight. Not everyone is meant to be skinny no matter how healthy they live, it just won't happen. I can tell no one on this forum is a doctor because if they were they would agree. You can only be as thin as your body will allow. There are babies that come out chubby and through their lives they stay that way no matter how they live. Healthy can only be measured on how far your heart will take you. Skinny does not mean healthy, nor does fat mean unhealthy. Healthy means your organs, bones, and mind are in an equipped position to function without stress. Get real people how many skinny people or fat people can say they are truly healthy, not because of size but because of the things listed.

"AND PRAY TELL WHAT IS WRONG WITH A SIZE 12/14 OR 16 FOR THAT MATTER OF FACT????" JUST BECUZ YOU ARE SKINNY, DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU ARE HEALTHY!!!! I WEAR A SIZ 14 AND I EXERCISE, EAT HEALTHY AND LOOK GOOD FOR MY AGE WHICH IS 46....NOT EVERYONE CAN BE A SIZE0, 2, 4,6 OR 8......GET OVER IT AND BE FOR REAL....A BLACK WOMAN WHO IS PROUD OF HER BODY AND HER BUTT...

Don't get me started about obsity and health issues in the black community (I'm African American too). There is even less pressure to be a health weight among many blacks, with our health issues and higher mortalities, diet, health and exercise should be our top priority. Instead, many blacks, especially women, think of it as a point of ethnic pride to be obese! Self-deluding and misguided!
