Unfortunately, we have been led to believe that if you resmble someone who is anorexic or bulemic that you have a sought after figure, this is the reason that eating disorders have expanded in the last few years. What ever happened to the days of Marilyn Monroe and Betty Page figures, they were not overweight, but healthy. Isn't that what it is all about, being healthy, and having the shape and figure made for your body? I just can't believe that this has become a day to day topic, with all of the other issues that are effecting our country.

I think in real life there is a reverse bias towards very thin people. I'm pretty thin naturally, without dieting or working out much, and I have people I don't know come up to me and tell me that they hate me because I'm so thin. I also have trouble finding clothes that fit me because in "regular" stores (rather than disigner's stores) sizes sometimes don't go down further than a 4.
I am from the Netherlands and people are generally thinner and much fitter than people in the U.S. Sometimes I think that the "big is beautiful" campaign is just an excuse for people to not get in shape or think about what they eat. Some people cannot help being overweight, but in some cases it definitely shows some kind of decadence, laziness and overindulgence that is just selfish, in a way.
I am all for having different shape models, but don't discriminate against people who are naturally thin.

good. it is about time that the fashion industry sees that all people now mater what size can and do have fashion sense. maybe this will help make the turn in the store for those of us who are to "big" for normal stores yet to "small" for the plus size stores. (the size 11-14 range is hard for shopping!)

So to all the overweight and chunky girls on here... stfu. I too am overweight always have been . I learned to embrace it . I work out six days a week two hours a day and have a very controled diet , yes I am on the path to a better body but I also relize that the one I have has to be dressed different than the models. That is not to say i cant be stylish I just have to be realistic. I am not going to prance around in a mini skirt that I know would look horrible on me when a sexy knee lenghth and some heels would look better,. Guys do notice you when u dress for your body type and u wear it with confidence. i dont expect anyone to feel sorry for me because I love me. i do think that for the thin girls on here to sit there and say all of us overweight girls are unhealthy ,come see me I bet I can out run you and I bet I eat better than you..... my genes arent the same as yours. You CANNOT judge someone if you dont know their situation. I dont look at every thin girl and think she has a eating disorder so why would u look at me and automatically assume i dont take care of myself?

Because people have very narrow minds. We learn to embrace ourselves, even while changing, and they can't.

There really shouldn't be any reason to bash someone on their opinions. Everyone is different and personally I think the fashion world hasn't done a very good job of relaying that. All we ever see on the runways are very thin models and plus size models. What happened to the in-between sizes that exsist in the everyday market place. I think it would be a great idea to start having models that relate to your everyday average consumer.

Ornot and anyone else with those same views-
You are rude and have no right to say that. I am a plus-sized girl, and not all fasion looks like a trash bag on me. I know how to work it and strut it. The world isn't changing to make US feel included, it's changing to become more real. Not everyone is skinny, not everyone is fat. I do not need to feel included in YOUR world that is so small, you can only see your own size. I live in something called the real world.
I am proud of who I am and glad that people are begining to see that not all that's skinny is pretty. It might not be 'okay to be overweight' in your skinny world, but there are a lot of people who are happy with who they are.
Being overweight should not exclude us from the rights of fashionable clothing, but we don't, at the same time, need people to feel 'sorry' for us.
Besides, if I wanted, I could make a trash bag look way better on me than on someone who can get confused for a post.

Since when is it our "Right" to have fashionable clothing?

  • Posted By: mcloud12 @ 01/30/2008 2:33:40 PM

I think the article is very enlightening. I think its a good idea to have your more normal size women as models. As MR. White Collar lives in a fantasy world and clearly cant think with the right head, there are many beautiful women out there that are not stick thin. I believe what they are looking for are down right beautiful people with some weight on them and not over weight and out of shape couch people!

I'm sort of mixed. I hate the look of models nowadays. They are too emaciated. I think that the models of the 1980's and 1990's were probably the best.

However, I'm not all about the ordinary person becoming a high end model. I'm not about fat (you can call it curvy) women strutting their stuff and calling it haute couture.

Haute Couture is not about the average person, it's art for the designer and the model is their canvas. It's not how things fit on ordinary or fat people. If I could use a car analogy, Ford wouldn't highlight their Ford Focus at the Detroit Auto Show. So why would we expect Ugly Betty's on the cat walk shilling clothes that is definitely NOT off the rack?

fashion is about the produces being displayed anything that does not enchance the produce is distracting and useless. healthy is the way to go. I am 5,6 103llbs. i eat whatever i can get my hands on whatever is health for that particular person works but if that person is too beatuiful and distracts from the sale and admiration of the item then the model is not doing her job and should seek another profession like maxim and sport illustrated cause ur not acomplishing the job well. like I said beforeAlso as a designer and a person who sews it is easier to buy fabric for a slimmer person. Fabric and others materials are so expensive theses days and sometimes it is easier. Also if a designer can make a pencil have curves then maybe that says alot about a designers ability to give the clothes it self movement and curves rather than depending on the models curves to bring out the clothing Just some things to concider.
And any person is as real as they make themselves and as much as they make others see then. if you drown you out competely your just a lump, twig, or patch of bones, meat, fat or just skin

ducttapedemotion-you are not doomed, or you should not feel doomed. You are taking ownership of your health and working with what you have. Again, that's my point. And that's the distinction. You are being responsible for your health. The people who I take issue with are those who don't strive to take care of themselves. And IT IS TWO VERY DIFFERENT THINGS. It's about doing your best and make smart choices which is what it sounds like you are doing. You have to believe in who you are and make the decisions that will keep you healthy and vibrant for your entire life.

This is just another instance of pushy fat people trying to make others cave in. Let me guess, your role model is the actress Monique? Who loves dissing skinny girls, and is pround of weighing 300+ pounds. Get over it. The only designers who start using big woman are doing it because no one else is yet. It's a novelty that will hopefully wear out. While some of the girls modeling today are admittedly too thin, letting fat people model is only going to tell "the next generation" that being unhealthy is just fine.

Blah blah blah and how old are you?

  • Posted By: chumley @ 01/30/2008 2:21:55 PM

It's easy to blame the fashion industry for the attitude that women MUST be thin and beautiful or they're not "worthy." The truth, however, is that there's a lot more to it than that. Yes, there is "blame" (if you must blame someone) to be placed on this industry, but you must remember that these people just want their clothes to look good, and they want their shows to be artistic. If you really want to see blame thrown around, then most people should step up and accept at least a piece of that blame. I hear the ridiculously critical comments from the so-called "real people" - and, I'm telling you, THAT aint pretty! It's ALWAYS AMAZING to me when I hear some of the things my friends, family, co-workers, or just people I meet in the streets say about women whom I think very OBVIOUSLY look good -- they say they're fat or ugly or they make nasty comments about their hair, etc. (Someone I know even said Demi Moore was fat when she did 'Striptease'!!) Remember this the next time you find yourself ridiculing some beautiful actress who's not a size 2 for being fat or you say some celebrity looks old even though she's barely over 30! It's easy to blame an INDUSTRY, rather than point the blame at ourselves, isn't it? - By the way, I'm 44 years old; I've NEVER worked in the fashion industry; AND I've been overweight most of my life! So don't for a second think I'm defending the fashion industry -- I am simply facing the truth that most people are waaaaay too critical, especially when it comes to O.P.L. -- OTHER PEOPLE'S LOOKS.

    • Posted By: sabbott13 @ 01/30/2008 2:31:16 PM

Well stated. It really bothers me that there is any blame at all. Do we complain about car comercials who advertise their sport car by driving fast and sliding around turns? Then why do we blame "the fashion industry" when our young girls have eating disorders by trying to look like their models? We blame video games for kids violence and obesity to fast food restaurants. Parents should always be to blame. Take some damn responsiblity.

  • Posted By: stratogustav @ 01/30/2008 2:06:36 PM

That sucks because nice and skinny is the best and the most classy. girls are suppossed to be delicate and fine, their slim beauty is defined since ancient times from the beginning of western civilization in Greece.

If you think you cannot be healthy and skinny at the same time you are just a lazy ignorant.

    • Posted By: Sherry_5808 @ 01/30/2008 2:31:00 PM

All of the women of Greece were real women. They were FULL FIGURED women with child bearing hips, thick waists and big breasts!!! The skinny women were slaves.

    • Posted By: Sheenami @ 01/30/2008 2:10:43 PM

You've never SEEN classic designs of beautiful women, have you? Try googling Botticelli or Venus de Milo. Neither one of them look like ANY of the models today. They definately would be considered too fat, what with the hips and the chest.

It's about time, excellent idea. People come in all sizes, shapes and forms. Normal folk buy clothing also, let's show them in magazines and on television.

Alright, I agree that stick figures are not attractive, however, I do not agree with shows using models who are overweight, by that I mean a BMI over 25. I think that society in general has moved into a very dangerous mindset when being overweight has become the new norm. I think unfortunately now we are seing a different kind of backlash, where overweight individuals are trying to make it ok to be fat. It is not acceptable, nor healthy. If I had a show all of my models would be healthy! NOT FAT> the episode of ugly betty, showed some obese individuals in their alternative show and I was so upset, we need to get away from the waif image being attractive and move to healthy women/men but do not promote obesity as being the new norm. And Parents-DO NOT LET YOUR KIDS BE FAT!!! Child onset diabetes takes 7-15 years off your child's life. They are not the ones cooking the meals.

Very smart comment. I wish there were more people like you. Fat is not normal, and especially is not normal for a female to have a bulging belly and no butt. What happened with the hourglass shape? Two days ago I went to a department store to get a pair of jeans. I tried on 6 pairs and none of them were a good fit. Actually, all were way too large around the waist. I am 37 years old, 5'6" 123 lbs.

      • Posted By: beige_glitter @ 01/30/2008 2:29:55 PM

interesting, most pants I try on are too tight in the hips and far too big in the waist. but if they were made for a woman: hips, ass, and everything (size 6 pls!) then I'd fit in them much better.

  • Posted By: celtic lass @ 01/30/2008 2:28:31 PM

I think it's time we see real people with real clothes instead of the designer clothes none of us real women could afford even with two jobs. Us plus sized women are tired of being told we are fat! We are not, we are curvy, like the women in the Victorian Age
