Comment: Ann Coulter, one for the most militant fear mongering republicans that exists today swore recently she would rather vote for Hillary Clinton than John Mccain. This is an exciting time for the growing majority of decent people left in this country, I can feel the storm brewing now as we get closer to crunch time the entire republican party is now being forced to choose between a democratic pandering weeny and a high and mighty rich mormon, this has to be their worst nightmare. I can't wait to start watching smoke come out the ears of the old ultra conservative republican guard as they watch their party taken over by the enemy. haha!

Comment: The last thing we need in this country is another confused disconnected old guy from the vietnam era making decisions about how we should guide this country into the future. Guys like mccain and bush are always trying to figure out how to go backwards rather than forwards i.e. the last 8 years.... We have to have a young progressive thinker, i'm sick of wars, stop with the warring you freakin' old people, us young people have found better things to do with our time, like solve the problems you old idiots keep creating. WE DON'T CARE YOU WERE IN VIETNAM. What the hell does anything have to do with vietnam man! -Lebowski

Comment: I'm with you, Mark, nicely written! I've been hoping for another McCain run since 2000 when he was "bushwacked" in South Carolina. I'm a Democrat and thought he was the only bright star amongst a very dim lot.

Granted Iraq is a fiasco and the Bushies horribly mismanaged "nation building". Frankly I was never for this war, but I'm of the opinion that "if you broke it, you fix it." McCain is the best candidate to get us out of Iraq the right way. Too many just plain want to get out, period, never mind the consequences.

I hope he can keep the ball rolling and become the Republican nominee. If Hillary gets the Democrat nomination, I think he'll blow her out of the water. GO JOHNNY GO!

Comment: You do realize that there was no proof ever found that McCain's mystery phone calls were ever made or recieved. McCain made the whole thing up to 'bushwack' GW...

Comment: What ever happened to the creed of never leaving a fallen brother behind? The First chance McCain had when he was in the Senate, he and Kerry sold the POWs and MIAs down the Me Chong in order to normalize relations with Vietnam. And now, as illegal aliens are flooding across our borders, he hires a former member of the Mexican government as his advisor. What government is McCain working for? He comes back from the war and dumps his wife for a rich trophy. He joins the Reps, but votes like a Dem. I don't see a lot of loyalty in McCain.

If you support McCain, vote Hillary. They both have the same distorted policies, but at least the Reps won't get blaimed when they fail...

Comment: And by the way, Wall Street was never in any danger of being nuked by Iraq- because they had no nukes. Yet your boy McCain wants to keep us there. Great thought process for supporting a candidate. Good God, if you manage other people's money the way you manage your political thoughts, it's no wonder you can't find work.

Also, be sure to write another article if the polls show Clinton or Obama take a lead over McCain. The nation is dying to hear about some laid off corporal switching sides based on other people's opinions yet again.

Comment: I have a few disagreements here. Towards the end of the first page, the author states he felt like abandoning a best friend "to go hang out with the popular kids". Has anyone forgotten who the "popular kid" was just a few months back-Giulliani that was...What happened then?- hat he had to sell was not good enough...a leader must be first and foremost honest to himself and when someone is not even able to bring himself to that and he suffers from the chameleon syndrome that makes him say he favors abortion in one state and just a few hours later in a less liberal place say the opposite, that certainly take points off and make people
    spot a fake.
What Giulliani had to sell was the fact he happened to be mayor of NYC during the first major attack on
US soil. Something never before done and the momentum and aftermath made him look like the hero he never was and he will never be. Just like a coward actor who is afraid of heights and out of a lucky chance gets to make a jump the cameras catch and impresses the rest as a brave jumper.
National Security is something no American in their right mind will put in the back burner. The fact most of us are willing to wait the extra time in an airport line as long as it is safer to board that plane says part of it. The fact most Americans condemned 911 says a lot also..How many Americans will say it is safe to turn our back on terrorism?. So why put some who happened to be there at that time and place as heroes when they did not walk the extra mile-they (Giulliani and like) turned their backs on 911 rescuers suffering from countless diseases while cozing up presidential hopes, private endorsements and hightly paid 1 hour speeches...that does not sound to me like what a true American hero would do. Any mayor would have done as much if not more than Giulliani if caught in the similar or same situation, but connections got him a Knighhood and also more credit than he earned.
As per McCain, he is a humble guy who earned his stars the hard way. Not through fake endorsements, but in the battlefield. Not pretending, but doing. He is older, but he is a much closer version of what an American hero is than a clown like Giulliani...I haven't made my mind up yet as to for whom I would vote, but Giulliani was always on top of my list of who I would never vote for. I can still tell the difference between a fake and a real person...Funny accents, expensive colognes and deep pockets are not the way to D.C. Only someone going there trying "to do something and not trying to be somebody" as McCain put it gets closer to that road. I am not the only American professing such views. I just wonder what clouded the eyes and minds of so many for so long thinking Giulliani was even worth it. Clowns belong in the circus. By the way, there are a couple of them lose in the White House as I type. Time they get back to their right place...Feel free to visit YouGiveTheLine.com and cast your vote to impeach imposters posing as leaders.

Comment: As a fellow Marine and Republican, I find it curious that the Marine Corps' core values, politically speaking, were lost on you. Honor, courage and commitment. You dishonor your own principles, lack the courage of your convictions, and show no commitment to a man who is supposedly your inspiration. Good enough to wear his campaign shirt for 7 months, but not good enough to support through even the first primary? What a joke. It is incorrect to say you are an unabashed national security voter- you are a lemming voter. You wait for other people to vote on issues important to them, then follow behind their choice. Grow some political backbone, man.

And why is your lemming vote so important that McCain's campaign manager needs to know you are switching sides? Who are you? I don't see the thousands of others who survived 9/11 being elevated to the heavyweight status you think you deserve.

  • Posted By: Eric33 @ 01/30/2008 6:52:42 PM

Comment: Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 and most Americans think the war was a mistake. McCain still thinks it was a good idea and wants to stay another 100 years. He will continue the Bush-neocon foreign policy of endless war.

Comment: Lay off of Rumsfeld! In the dawn of jet carrier ops, the US NAVY lost 2,000 pilots in one single year of peacetime operations. That's how it was when Lt. Don Rumsfeld earned his wings. When McCain's campaign began to implode last August, I sent him a check. I thought, "I'm not voting for him, but he's too good a man to go out like this." He's patently nuts on every issue other than the war, but he's an American hero and I'm proud to see him still in the fight. He brings honor to the field. But you had better show some respect toward your former SECDEF, son. Don't pin any of that "chickenhawk" crap on him! It demeans you and your service, and such wisecracks have diminished McCain.

Comment: Finelli writes a compelling and acceptable argument for a McCain presidency, although I am not sure that I can honestly beieve that McCain is the "reason" that he joined the Marines. In any event, as a lost Rudy supporter, and Arizona resident by way of the upper-east side of Manhattan who experienced 9/11 firsthand as well, I sympathize with Finelli's perspective on leadership and reasons why McCain may be the only choice for President in 2008. While Obama speaks brilliantly and may indeed be a good choice for president in 5-10 years, I must say that I agree with Finelli and support the McCain campaign. Just remember Mark, don't forget to where your bowtie the next time you are on Hardball, you warhawk you.

Comment: No other canidate has mentioned how they are going to treat veterans or soldiers coming back from Iraq. All Americans should know all promises are never kept. They would say anything to get in. McCain is a fighter and a gentle person and I think as a veteran he can lead the United States back to being #1. We are falling apart between our government and the people, we need the trust and truth. No more lies. McCain all the way.

Comment: AS A VIETNAM VET, I AGREE WITH YOUIR COMMENTS RE PEOPLE SENDING THE COUNTRY TO WAR WITHOUT EVER HAVING BEEN THEMSELVES.

ALTHOUGH NOT A SUPPORTER OF MR. MCCAIN, AS MANY OF HIS SOCIAL POLICIES ARE REPUGNANT TO MY BELIEF SYSTEM I DO RESPECT HIM.

HOWEVER, YOUR ARTICLE WAS NOT ENTIRELY ACCURATE - DONALD RUMSFELD SERVCED ON ACTIVE DUTY WITH THE NAVY FOR APPROXIMATELY THREE YEARS IN THE THE 1950'S

Comment: Every politician makes promises how many deliver?
Obama is not the party line, he is not the old guard.
He is a fresh voice in a sea seething with lies and untruths.
We need someone to shake up the govt and not just maintain things as usual.
Someone to restore to the world that America is truly a place of freedom and justice

  • Posted By: eddiewhere @ 01/30/2008 2:17:26 AM

Comment: IT is OBVIOUS that the DEMCRATIC ESTABLISHMENT KNOWs THAT OBAMA is the CANDIDATE with the BEST CHANCE to win in NOVEMBER. EVERY statistic and poll supports this fact The DEMOCRATIC party cannot risk losing the WHITE HOUSE. The only obstacle standing in OBAMA's way is the LATINO VOTE.

THE CLINTON"S ARE JUST TO polarizing. Too many scandals, to many investigations. I do not believe they are guilty in all those scandals I just believe AMERICA needs a change from the establishment. We do not need a years worth of divisive campaigning. IT would be amazing to see McCain vs OBAMA. A GOOD CLEAN HEAVY WEIGHT FIGHT. NO ONE GETS THEIR EAR BIT OFF. A ROMNEY CAMpaign would be just like BUSH'S very divisive and full of lies. IF AMERICA CHOOSES THESE TWO CANDIDATES to represent their respective parties then I think the AMERICAN political process can begin to heal and set an example to the rest of the world. WHAT KIND OF MESSAGE ARE WE SENDING IRAQIS and AFGHANS. IF we promote racial divide why shoud they give us the benefit of the doubt concerning ABU GRADE and BLACK WATER. ARE WE REALLY RACIST CAN IT BE THAT THE CLINTON"S ARE A REFLECTION OF OUR SOCIETY. DIVIDE people so we the CLINTON'S can attain the power we are entitled too and so rightfully deserve after my conduct in the OVAL OFFICE. No one else is capable of being president. I will become nasty and play the race card because the "MEDIA" is trying to take away the presidency from me and my wife.

OBAMA HAS TO GAIN GROUND WITH THE LATINO VOTE. HE NEEDS TO BLITZ THE LATINO"S WITH COMMERCIALS OF ECONOMIC prosperity.

Comment: If its Obama vs McCain in Nov. you can forget about Obama getting the latino vote. McCain's bill holds to much clout. Although I am voting for McCain I do agree we need change. and while Obama' s campaign for change is inspiring and hopeful. One must tell us what they are going to change not just say change 50 times in a speech. Not sure how much ted Kennedy's endorsment will help him, in fact it may be negative.

  • Posted By: nawawimohamad @ 01/29/2008 11:54:16 PM

Comment: Finelli, you must be so ignorant about politics. No matter who you put into power, the president will have to make decisions based on the campaign contributors, lobbyists, policy makers and other influential parties(other world leaders) - not based on your ideals or what the voters want!

    • Posted By: shaneww @ 01/30/2008 02:22:32

Comment: Nawawimohamad, hmmm.... Maybe you should sit back and look at McCain's record. You might want to read McCain-Feingold. McCain is a great candidate because he can see things from both sides of the aisle. He doesn't care who he is sticking his nose at, he does what he feels is right, and how about a little respect for a veteran who faught to keep you safe.

  • Posted By: Ron Paul For Pope @ 01/29/2008 11:17:05 PM

Comment: My support for McCain is directly proportional to the distance he keeps from the neocons.

While I like the guy, and I'm glad he's succeeding, I am troubled sometimes by his tendency to orbit around AIPAC and their ilk.

If we go to war, we must do it because it's in American interests, not because it serves another nation's goals. We are impoverishing and endangering ourselves by fighting the wrong enemies.

As an Obama supporting Democrat I nevertheless respect your heartfelt views and support of McCain; I actually voted for him myself in the 2000 Michigan primary. I hope this country is well served by a general election campaign between McCain and Obama that respects the good will and patriotism of most Americans.

Comment: Being a POW for 5 years probabaly does not quality a person to be President of The United States. But telling your jailers that you won't leave until every prisoner who got there before you did, probably does. This country was founded, lead and kept alive by people with "character". It looks like we are about to give another man with character the chance to lead this great nation.

  • Posted By: dan725 @ 01/29/2008 8:50:38 PM

Comment: people should read "Why Courage Matters" by John McCain. The book was truly moving. I'm more of a democrat in terms of issues, but for a long time now, I've wanted him to be my president.

  • Posted By: Arjuna9 @ 01/29/2008 8:50:28 PM

Comment: What an idiot you are. You were suckered into doing exactly what they wanted you to do. We attacked Iraq to establish a permanent military stronghold in the Middle East from which to protect Israel. And fools like you and McCain, who see war only from the viewpoint of a soldier and not from the larger picture, are more than ready to sacrifice billions and billions of OUR dollars on killing people we should not be killing. Then you go around patting yourselves on the back for being such "heroes!

  • Posted By: eiser @ 01/29/2008 8:45:24 PM

Comment: Most of the world is not like us. They do not have our education, money, and security. These things give us the ability to sit back in our warm homes, at our table with a good meal, and time to relax. By many in this world, our poorest would be considered rich. Don't get me wrong, we have a long way to go in this country to build up those in need. Without the strong military we have, and the willingness of our soldiers to fight, many would waste little time taking what we have. Don't kid yourselves into believing that the human race has evolved that far from lower animals. We should not leave the middle east just like we have not left almost every other part of the world. The longer we stay the better chance of pease. If we pulled out of Europe today, there would be war tomorrow. Think about it.

  • Posted By: MonteCarlo Lars @ 01/29/2008 8:32:20 PM

Comment: McCain sitting in the Hanoi Hilton for 5 years hardly qualifies him as an expert on military affairs. He's lived off that experince for his whole political life. Give me a break. As a Vietnam Era Vet, I'm tired of his "more patriotic that thou" schtick. He is a mad dog warmonger. He'll probably hire Bush and Cheney as his advisors if elected.

  • Posted By: MonteCarlo Lars @ 01/29/2008 8:25:40 PM

Comment: Mccain may be a war hero. But He is a war monger. McCain thinks and emphasizes his strategy of troop surge. It is a dangerous action and it makes American and the other western countries very unsafe. More civilians in the Middle east and Pakistan have become angered by this and resorted to violent actions. McCain's strategy is nothing but a big looming disaster around our horizon. Anybody who supports McCain because of his war credentials is purley ignorant of making peace and intended to fuel more hate mongering. Ron Paul is the man of the Hour. He is the only who can put America's crebility on the world stage.
