Having to rely on celebrity endorsements to convince people about one's sincerity or abiliity is pathetic. Words are easy and cheap, show us how much Obama has done for the ordinary people. I am an independent. I could have considered voting for Obama, but these endorsements have absolutely turned me off.

We have already had a Harvard graduate who supposed has expertise in business administration and is still getting his training on the job as president., and who also claimed to be a uniter during his campaign. I am not saying that they are of the same calibre. But the past seven years should have made us wiser in not believing blindly in words only.

I feel greatly offended by these celebrities, Caroline and the other Kennedys included, who always consider themselves superior and love to 'guide' the "lowly ignorant" ordinary folks who should look up to them for guidance. I can't wait for the day when we can be spared of their advice and of their news in the media.

I have t echo VT_Esq comments. But I want to go one further. I believe that the Clintons have intentionally been racist and dishonest in their continuing false attacks on Obama. It's like the Clinton advocates trying to make an issue out of Obama turning away from Clinton to talk with McCaskill. The fact is Clinton represents the PAST, Obama the future. Clinton, if she cared about our country, would drop out of the race. Period.

The Clintons have never been racist. That must be said more often. Get your facts right and stop listening to Fox and other main stream news sources that want to make us dems fight each other. Male dominated news rooms have become the frat parlors for mysogynists who can't abide the idea of a woman president - one who really knows what she's talking about.

What do you think the press would say if white candidates courted white voters the way Obama is courting black voters because of his race?

        • Posted By: LONG ISLAND MOM @ 02/01/2008 2:53:07 AM

You "people" crack me up.Obama won in 99% white Iowa:nearly won in nearly all white NH.and has never "touted" himself as the "black" candidate. It was the "Clintons" who crybabied about Barack getting over 80% of the black vote in SC.-----Oh but guess who got 80% of the white vote in SC...you guessed it,the WHITE candidates.Oh but that's different-becuse it always IS with you hippocrites

Are you fricking kidding me? Obama has been making dishonest and personal attacks on Hillary for nearly a year. Do you know one of Obama's campaign aides approached Marc Ambinder, associate editor of "The Atlantic," and uged him to "investigate Bill Clinton's post-presidential sex life"? Yes, THAT is the sort of campaign Obama is running.

Let's look at just a few of these:

      - 1/21/07: Obama makes snide and untrue remark about Hillary deciding she wanted to be president when she was seven years old.
-6/07: Obama issues a racist press release referring to Hillary as "D-Punjab"; he was forced to apologize.
      - 6/15/07: Obama campaign falsely claims Bill Clinton gave a paid speech on the anniversary of 9/11
      - 7/27/07 - Obama calls Hillary "Bush/Cheney lite"

These are just a few, but it's important to note these all happened months before Obama started accusing Hillary of a smear campaign. But they received scant attention, because the media LOVES the "Obama as David bringing down the Clinton Goliath" angle.

      • Posted By: jaymiller @ 01/31/2008 1:50:18 PM

A campaign aide wanted Marc Ambinder to probe Bill Clinton's sex life? Why don't you give everone here the full context of this:

        http://marcambinder.theatlantic.com/archives/2007/12/obama_on_negative_campaigning.php

Note that Obama is explicit in his directives to his staff. Your assertion that "this" is the type of campaign that Obama is misleading and implies that this was somehow sanctioned by him, which is patently false and a ridiculous conclusion.

Enter Your CommentComment: By leaving out the bad parts you are saying he missed saying in his book he was heading in the wrong direction as a youth. Is that right? The difference is people talk about Obama and what he can do and what he has done. With Clinton they talk about what her competition is doing or has done.- Is there anything about her that you can offer than to attack her opponents? ANYTHING WILL DO

This is a great story and I too got teary eyed reading it. I knew about the Kennedy Foundation connection that brought Obama's father to the US but I hadn't heard about the Nixon angle or the most amazing coincidence that Obama was assigned JFK's desk. I grew up in Kenya and went to college in the US which made the story even more special.

    • Posted By: MsKinFLA @ 01/30/2008 11:12:44 PM

Does anyone know where Obama's father is?? In hiding?? Mr. Osama, I mean Obama, where are you....come out wherever you are.

WE owe a lot to the CLINTON's for what they did in the ninety's. THOSE were the BEST OF TIMES for the majority, RICH, MIDDLE CLASS and the least fortunate. Unfortunately scandal and nine eleven have overshadowed the CLINTON successes. I am voting for OBAMA because we need to overcome divisivness. We need our children to learn that working together to overcome obstacles is "the way to go". Racism, destroying individual character and being less than honest is a bad example to set for our children. THIS is why McCain and OBAMA would be the best candidates to represent America to the world and to our children. IF we allow our youth to learn that winning at all costs works, then we cannot complain in the FUTURE.
WE HAVE TO SEND A MESSAGE.

I do not feel anyone should compare Barack Obama to John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Junior, or Abraham Lincoln as has been done by Obama's advisors up until this point.

That's the main reason I found this endorsement by Mrs. Schlossberg to be viciously offensive; she's JFK's daughter and has to know that this sets up the "Obama = Kennedy" paradigm in even starker relief. And that's ridiculous.

Please, let the dead be dead.

Anyone wanting to pretend to be someone greater than himself annoys me and will never get my vote. I see a person like that as hyperbolic, churlish and hubristic -- and I am not amused.

Plus, Mrs. Schlossberg's endorsement helped drive the only true progressive from the race -- John Edwards -- the only candidate I was sure was speaking for me and on behalf of me. I have no such belief about Mr. Obama or about Mrs. Clinton, but at least Mrs. Clinton is smart and has proven herself to be competent. Whereas Mr. Obama is an unknown quantity who seems to be rather stuck on himself (or at least allows his advisors to say ridiculously hyperbolic things on his behalf, which isn't any better) -- at any rate, I am not interested in ever voting for Mr. Obama. He has turned me permanently to the "off" position, and I do not see anything redeeming about him.

John Edwards was the best man for the job. Mrs. Schlossberg just helped put the final nail into Mr. Edwards' coffin -- thanks a whole heap, Mrs. Schlossberg!

I can hardly believe the magnitude of your ignorance.Obama has "never" compared himself to the people you have named.Furthermore Caroline has endorsed him after thoroughly researching his vast and impressive ideas on how to unite our country, and get it back on the road to being a "hopeful" nation again.Open your eyes and your hearts to the possibilities. She stated that "others" have told her how her father inspired a whole generation, because we know her father was taken from her life at an early age.God,isn't it time we just get away from all this negativity in our psyches and stop being so hateful.Give yourself an assignment to learn all you can about someone before spouting untruths.I guarantee you will be on your way to being a happier(well-infomed )person.

The Founding Fathers divided the government into 3 important branches, the Legislative, the Executive, and the Judicial???the Separation of Powers.

They believed in a strong and fair government, but they wanted to protect its citizens??? individual freedoms and prevent the government from abusing its power.

The House of Representatives and the Senate keep the President in check.

Therefore, the citizenry can only be denied their desires when the separate powers of government abdicate the responsibilities given them by the Founding Fathers and become complicit in the abuse of its citizenry.

The implicit requirements of the President are the ability to bring people together to work towards a common goal, to inspire, and to lead with sound judgment.

I view Caroline Kennedy???s endorsement of Obama as evidence of a profound understanding of the checks and balances of government, an acknowledgement of the implicit requirements of the Presidency, and the need to return the government to its people.

    Job Well Done!

OBAMA HAS NO EDUCATION AT ALL.......just seeing the Monday's picture when he turned his back on Mrs. Clinton.

Is that kind of man we want to represent our Country?

    • Posted By: vclayson@msn.com @ 01/31/2008 7:24:14 PM

Petty, petty, petty. Hopefully you won't base your vote, if you are actually eligible to vote and do vote, that this imagined slight won't make or break your decision. I don't believe it was a snub but even it was maybe she understands how military, secret service and the Capitol police felt when she treated them disrespectfully. You might also consider rephrasing your comment about Obama having "no education at all", surely you don't believe he missed the handshake course while completing his magna *** laude Doctor Of Law studies at Harvard,

      • Posted By: vclayson@msn.com @ 01/31/2008 11:46:18 PM

Spealing of education, the Latin word *** doesn't need ***, in the phrase magna *** laude, it means with great praise, it isn't about a blue dress. Come on, Newsweek, get real.

Response to the post below me

Stilts: So it is alright when Obama has such an oversized ambition wanting to be President at such a young age (or in such a hurry). So it is alright if Obama is calculating (such as his "present votes" when he was a state legislator trying to avoid sensitive issues that might hurt him later on and how his different approach when handling his identity between black voters and white voters, etc.) Only if Hillary is ambitious and calculating, then it is sinful.

Obama is lucky because he is young and fresh with little track record--little bagages, so it is easier for him to run a positive campaign, which makes look better than Hillary. But the bottomline truth is that they both are politicians in this to gain power. I don't mind you criticize Hillary, but you lost credibility by not evaluate them in the same standards. By the way, I have never detected Hillary is as bad as you describe. So what, you want to win so badly. This means she is really determined. I know all the previous presidents would not become presidents if they didn't want it so badly.

    • Posted By: stilts @ 01/31/2008 5:25:36 PM

Keep distorting Obama's record no matter how many times the truth is pointed out to you. The more you do it, the more you drive discerning people away.

Voting "present" in Illinois (Barack did it 100 times out of more than 4000 votes) is the common negotiating practice to indicate that you would vote for the bill once some wording or other problem with the draft were corrected.

      • Posted By: sean2002 @ 01/31/2008 5:30:51 PM

I didn't mean to distort Obama's records, That more than 100 votes were related to the most sensitive issues.

        • Posted By: stilts @ 01/31/2008 10:51:53 PM

Oh really? How long did it take you to research the microfiche legislative history to arrive at that conclusion?

          • Posted By: mac2007 @ 01/31/2008 11:29:25 PM

Why not take the time doing the research yourself before questioning me?

This was an interesting story but irrelavent.
    To Hillary supporters:
It's not necessary to become nasty.
Do you think Caroline supports Obama because Hillary is a woman?
Or is she too insensitive to understand that it's Hillary's turn to be president because she is a woman?
To me what is important is to change the kind of discource we have in politics, Obama can. Clinton can't.

  • Posted By: rayenna @ 01/31/2008 10:04:47 PM

It's a nice, warm, fuzzy story... but it leaves one with the impression that Caroline's choice was primarily an emotional reaction related to an obscure connection between the fathers. It's as if her choice was the result of a surreal belief in predestination rather than a considered dissection of the issues.

A fantastic story. In the mist of all the politics, comments, stories and the mighty advanlange of words being printed and spoken throughtout the United States, this story touches my heart very deeply. It gives me hope for America. I am very greatful to you Jonathan Alter. From a former Republican.

Stupid? Childish? Out of touch? Are you projecting your own attributes on Caroline or do you actually have an argument to articulate? Let's hear something of substance.

  • Posted By: anna nemos @ 01/31/2008 7:52:41 PM

Does it get more stupid, more vapid than this? Princess Caroline--you're not your father. and, if you had any guts, you'd take on the Warren Commission's b.s. conclusions. Don't tell us who to vote for. We all had to work for a living, unlike you. This is childish. Just what I'd expect from someone as out of touch with day to day life as you.

  • Posted By: Boris Borov @ 01/31/2008 11:22:51 AM

The whole notion that being married to someone actually counts as experience towards doing their job is nuts. Imagine how we would feel if Bill had been a brain surgeon (or more likely a gynecologist) and Hillary was taking over his medical practice.

    • Posted By: Jennifer72 @ 01/31/2008 11:49:35 AM

The spouses of doctors are not living at their spouses work like First Ladies. That is an apples and oranges comparison. Further, no other First Lady has been as politically active as Hillary. Even if that were not true she is a two term US senator. The last seven years are a far better gauge of her abilities than the White House years.

      • Posted By: dewcooper @ 01/31/2008 1:39:03 PM

There is a reason that the WH work and living areas are seperated. And Hillary was not elected to be FL, but she forced her politics upon us (much like a dictator). As far as being a two term senator, what has she accomplished? Senators are responsible for the budget - how do you like the defecit? For all of this last term she has done nothing but run for president...

        • Posted By: Jennifer72 @ 01/31/2008 7:46:39 PM

The senators will be shocked to find that they are only responsible for the budget. I guess that part about voting, and sometimes introducing, bills and resolutions before they can be signed into law by the president is for show. They might also be upset to learn that they really are not overseeing executive agency operations.

Oh wait they haven't had much luck reigning in the executive branch lately so that might be true.

As for the budget, Bush cannot place the whole blame for that on Congress. He proposes the budget. He decided we needed a bigger government with the addition of a Department of Homeland Security. Can anyone explain why if a pissing contest between the nine or more intelligence agencies allowed 9/11 to slip by, adding another player to the contest is the answer?

  • Posted By: danielgouldman @ 01/31/2008 3:02:31 PM

Here's how I look at it. First off - he has a history of getting it right the first time. He's extremely intelligent and is not so far removed from daily life that he still remembers what it is like to be an "average American" even if I would call him anything but average. I agree with him on his policy initiatives and I see him as being completely authentic. When you're voting for someone - its important to know where they stand. I don't trust Clinton at all - they really will do or say anything to get elected. Well - I want more than that. I find it curious that they "back off" of their attacks when they get backlash and they go back to being the good guys...if anything trying to position themselves as the victims in this - which is laughable. Another reason - our president will need to unite the American people...he will need to be able to work with members of both parties to get things done right the first time. Republicans, Independents and Democrats alike all like Obama for the most part....the question of experience keeps coming up but I agree with some of the things that I've read....its not so much experience as it is judgement that will have the greatest impact on our future success. I liked the Clintons in the 90's even with all the scandals....I do not wish to repeat it however - its a new era and its time to look forward.....hopefully - the voters will give Obama the mandate he needs to earn the nomination. Its going to be close on Super Tuesday.

    • Posted By: timmcgivern @ 01/31/2008 7:33:11 PM

Oh heck--What are we doing wasting all this time on this silly "president thing?" Why don't we just get it over with, cut out the middle man and immediately elevate Obama to Sainthood? Yeah . . . "SAINT Barack" . . . Has a nice ring to it, huh?

  • Posted By: stilts @ 01/31/2008 5:00:35 PM

I think this woman over at the Huffington post said it best, as follows:
(Huffington Post) Boadicea said: "I'm a white woman in my 50s. I confess, I don't share Steinem's view of the world. I think she still sees things through her original granny glasses. But much more important, Steinem completely ignores the content of a person's character. Steinem is obsessed with gender, and can't see anything else.

Hillary is the quintessential ambitious plodder. She's spent a lot of time setting herself up for the presidency, and she wants us to reward her for that *experience* with the nomination. But she misrepresents the truth, about her own experience and her opponent, and that offends my sense of fair play and decency. She's not trustworthy. Her campaign has been dirty.

And there's no use pretending that Obama is just an ordinary but ambitious politician who wants to be president. He's not. Anyone paying attention at all can plainly see that he is a gifted leader. The evidence is everywhere, from his career choices to his Senate accomplishments, from his remarkable campaign success to his responses to Hillary's dirty tactics. He's remarkable.

All of the DEmocratic candidates are good people, and effective politicians. But Obama has a combination of skills, accomplishments and character traits that make him that once-in-a-generation leader. America is crying out for such a leader.

Democrats would be foolish to give the nomination to Hillary just because people like Gloria Steinem and other out-of-touch 60s feminists are demanding a woman president. It's personal with them - the crowning achievement of their feminist dreams. For them, it's all about the fact that she's a woman.

But this country would miss out on a great opportunity if we passed on a President Obama. And that opportunity has absolutely nothing to do with the color of his skin."

    • Posted By: Jennifer72 @ 01/31/2008 7:23:33 PM

So let me get this straight, when a man spends time setting himself up for the presidency it is because he is plainly a gifted leader...but when a woman does it she is an ambitious plodder? It is not being a feminist to insist that a consistent standard of judgement be used.
What are Obama's stands that are so much different for Clinton's that he should be president? If it is only that he is an outsider to Washington's corruption, remember President Carter? Remember stagflation? Obama can lead all he wants but that does not mean Congress will follow. If Obama wants this presidency he will still be here to run in 2012 or 2016.

Only then we will have a track record on him to know what we are truly getting besides a great speaker.

    • Posted By: anton34 @ 01/31/2008 6:21:21 PM

no one is passing on Obama. He is smart and intelligent, but he shud have spent few more years in senate. Show his character and judgement by voting on some of the tough issues and then come to american people ans ask for their votes.
I ask you a simplw question wud american company hire a fresh graduate for seior management position. No.....then why shud we hire him for highest management position in the land?

  • Posted By: Windsor @ 01/31/2008 7:05:46 PM

this man, Obama is a socialist. The one thing that sticks in my mind is the fact that Caroline said Obama reminded her of her father. Well, President Kennedy's words were "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country!" Now that is something Obama would never say considering he wants the opposite and just hand out money for healthcare, college education, food, heat and whatever esle he wants to give our hard earned money to. I remember President John Kennedy and Obama hate no John Kennedy.
