I totally agree on washing everything in hot water. Hot water kills so many germs. I wouldn't think of relying on a cold water wash and a laundry product to disinfect my sweaty socks and gym clothes. Why even take the chance.

many people go to the gym as much for the social interaction as for the workout, so telling them to stay home and work out is missing the point. The information in this article is excellent information on how to stay healthy while improving your health!

I disagree with your hot water wash comment. Cold water and today's laundry products are just as effective and saves energy too.

I disagree with the hot water wash suggestion. Cold water with today's laundry products is just as effective and also saves energy.

The best way is not going to a gym. I have been practicing what in this article before reading this. I exercise at home.

In old Chinese saying, do not chance on the cheap you'll be caught in the trap, any kind and all kinds of...... at the price of your health......pricy... There is nothing cheap and convenient in life... actually, builing up a gym and going to it to keep yourself excercise and healthy is not a good idea at all. I advocate to exercise whereever and whenever, wihtout paying anything, at home is the best. Of course, I wash, change and wear adeqautely before reading this article.

MRSA has made many people anxious, they are looking for ways to avoid these germs and some companies are agressivly marketing products claiming they kill MRSA. You need to know that antibacterial products are NOT the best line of attack against MRSA and other germs. Clean water and soap is the best option available to clean hands.

This bacteria which are resistant to antibiotics don???t die easy. Using strong disinfectants, can give people a false sense of security and also may be dangerous. These chemicals have a tendency to dry skin resulting in cracks and can produce dermatitis. Any breach in skin is the main port of entry for these bacteria.

i actually prefer the machines NOT being wiped down. I mean for example....if there is obese chick on the bike preffusely sweating, farting, possible leaving fecal matter on the seat, i would love to go kiss that seat and rub my booty all over it......then id take a snif and make sure it smelt like poop.....mm yummmy....anyways im out of here, getting late for the gym

A good article on the risks of visiting a gym and how best to avoid them. The article neglected to provide a very important piece of advice. Gymgoers should always wear footwear in the sauna/locker/shower/changeroom area to prevent contracting plantar warts. Years ago I contracted plantar warts from my local swimming pool. My GP and I tried everything to get rid of them, including painting them with wart paint, freezing them with liquid nitrogen, soaking them in formaldehyde etc. In desperation, I asked my GP to surgically remove them (they had multiplied to 13 by then!). Immediately after the deep wound healed over they returned, so a year later I asked the GP to try again and dig them out with their roots. He did and, yes, you guessed it, they returned! In one last attempt to rid myself of them I began painting them with 100% melaleuca (ti tree) oil three to four times a day. After six weeks the plantar warts were gone! I documented my case and sent it to the University of Western Australia which is conducting research into the health attributes of melaleuca oil. it is truly Mother Nature's finest natural antiseptic!

at this point, you all should lean back, relax, have a beer and afterwards start a new life.

at this point all of you should just lean back, relax, enjoy a beer, drop that subject finaly and move on with life.

This article is so stupid. Who the f*** shares their razor with someone at the gym?!?!?! And if you're re-wearing socks to the gym, chances are germs are already a prevailing problem in your life and you need more than this article to help you. I feel dumber after reading this. thanks a lot.

    • Posted By: redcouch2008 @ 02/06/2008 2:51:08 AM

Reader913 I do not think you became dumber after reading this article, I don't believe it is possible. Keep your meaningless comments to yourself.

Oh man this is messed up. I just read <a href='http://managedq.com'>ManagedQ</a> searched gym germs and it is scary:

    http://www.managedq.com/search.php?q=gym+germs

Take a look for yourself. It says to always wear flip-flops in the shower.

This article is so stupid. Who the f*** would share a razor with someone at the gym?!?!?!?! And I have never heard of someone re-wearing socks to the gym. That's nasty. This writer should do some research next time instead of relying on his own filthy habits for material. I feel dumber now that I read this. thanks a lot.

Thankfully the gym I go to is ninety-five percent of the time clean. I mainly workout on the women's side but even when I stroll through the co-ed side, it's clean. But I still make sure to keep my clothes on and to wash my hands frequently.

  • Posted By: bigcheese1976 @ 02/05/2008 7:33:15 PM

Thats the last time that I borrow someones toothbrush, soap and sweat towel from a stranger at my gym.

I think overall, this is all very good information. Yes you can get any infection from any random place. But not everyone always uses common sense, or isn't as well informed as others when it comes to serious types of infections such as MRSA. The simple knowledge this article delivers in my opinion is great.

    Thanks for this article
I go to Golds gym in San Diego
    There have been many days
where I am discusded with how filthy the club is,
lockers, showers, and especially steam room.
I have gotten VERY ILL from the mildew in the steam room.
Too bad the managment/owners don't really care to keep it clean.
I have brought it to their attention, what they like to say is "no its not"
Than all the members standing around me have spoken up to let the
lazy employees know that, "yes in fact the club and steam room is quit filthy.

I work at a gold's gym, and you would be very very surprised at how nasty they really are! This article doesn't even describe how gross gyms may be. Do wash your equipment down before and after, and press for antibacterial disposable wipes. Some gyms reuse the same rag...and it's just gross. And if there is a pool at your gym, make sure staff is constantly checking the pH balance, and chlorine.

Good comments, Manatee. I respect that this is your livelyhood and I know it is not practical for everyone to workout at home, but home has been my choice for several years. The pool at the health club I belonged to was so bad it was like the Dead Sea except the salt was probably from sweat! No thanks.
