my husband got a staff infection from a hot tub - he too had a minor scratch and did not think anything about climbing into the tub he had to have i.v. antibotics for 8 weeks through a port they placed in his chest. he ran 107.5 fever had chills, sweats, vomiting, headaches ... it is no laughing matter - the infections can be deadly.

Okay! Enough you tired people. I'm sure none of you have been to a gym in years. You all sit behind your keyboards and talk all day instead.

These are all good suggestions, I have been going to gyms most my life and have seen people get staff infections, athletes foot, and allot of other bad stuff. Simple precautions can keep you healthy so you can get your work out and stay fit.

People need to stop making comments that generalize ALL gyms based on what they know about theirs. Or making comments on the principle of feeling they added to the board. If you look up MRSA (or watch the news) you would realize how very dangerous and highly contagious it is. The point of trying to avoid it is that it is resistant to many antibiotics, making it very hard to treat (hence the name). For those of you who claim to have been working out for years and never gotten sick, please take this into consideration: MRSA, along with many other bacteria and viruses, is relatively new to the general public. New types of germs develop all the time, so while you may have never gotten sick before, the chance has been increasing over the past few years as bacteria develop and find new ways to survive human defence strategies. You never know, and all it takes is one time. Use disinfectant and disposable towels, rags only spread germs around. There is a difference between being paranoid and being safe.

I think that sthsrunner likes to complain about things. This is a great article. Some people don't even think about the severity of MRSA. It can be deadly. I think it's stupid that there is a tag on blowdryers that tells you not to use it in the shower, but it's necessary to put it on there because SOMEONE has done it. So - keep providing us with tid-bits of tips to keep healthy. There are more people that will benefit from it, than there are people that will complain about it.

I got a staph infection from the gym. I was careless and went to the gym wearing a baremidriff t-shirt that was exposing my pierced naval. I worked out on a variety of equiptment / mats and did not use a towel/disinfectant wipes. A couple of days later my abdomen began to itch and was red. I developed a large boil/blister across my entire abdomen. It was raised, oozing and very painful. I went to the emergency room and the first thing the nurse asked if I had been to a gym/spa, public hot tub, etc. I had indeed contracted a staph infection via my exposed navel piercing which had spread across my abdomen. It took several weeks and antibiotics to clear up. I have a very faint scar across my abdomen where the infection was. Needless to say, I go to the gym covered from head to toe, take my own towel as well as Clorox wipes.

Watch out! Its truely amazing how many people I see at the gym who don't even bother to wipe down their machines when they finish. Quite frankly, I think it's just rude to not show any consideration for other members like myself who have to disinfect BEFORE and AFTER we use the machines!

LifeStyles Health and Fitness in Round Rock ,Texas is one of the cleanest gyms I have ever been too. The owners and members clean up after each use of equipment and the gym provides cleaning solutions for members to disinfect. It all comes down to tne owners and management.

Weird that this article should pop up as my husband just returned from a doctor visit where he was told he got an infectionj from the hot tub at our gym. He got a minor scratch on his nipple from the side of the pool and then spent some time in the hot tub. He had flu like symptoms and a pimple like rash. The area around his nipple turned red, hot, & swollen about 5 inches in diameter. I for one will be avoiding public hot tubs. Yuck

This is in response to sthsrunner: As a matter of fact the gym IS one of the most germ filled environments. Not the Library or movie theater. You obviously don't have a clue. If anything you're small minded to think that house wives go to the gym to gossip. That is just a generalized sweeping statement that you made to make yourself feel better about what you do at the gym. Or maybe because you've seen a couple women talking at the gym. I work out every day and it is at home because I don't feel like dealing with people like YOU. With a toddler son I don't have time for that kind of garbage.
