Gyms are a real problem w/ passing germs on, I found some good tips in this artical. It is up to you to protect yourself. also alot of this would apply to tanning beds in gyms. Just because they are stand up, does not mean you can't get things like foot fungus & so on. I have caught several colds at the Gym due to parents taking in children who are sick & snotty, then passes it along to every child who comes in contact w/them or the toys they snot on. i never take my kids even if there nose is barely running clear, or it just might be allergies, Im not a doctor so I do not assume to know what it is. let the symptoms pass, then go back to the Gym. it is very rude & unresponsible to infect others.

It was a dark and humid sumer night and the AC in my double wide was out. So I decided to go to the gym to pump up my massive 13 in arms and then take a long cold shower. I did not know what awaited me. I think it was the tredmill. That dirty, nasty, filth covered black bastard. It was on the tredmil where I picked up that virus. I know it. The gym owners don't like it when I wear my work boots on the tredmil so I always walk barefoot. It is no big deal, its what I do all the time anyhow. But it was that filthy tredmil that give me the virus. The red itchy cracked and smelly fungus in between my toes. I know it. I live it. I suffer everyday. Never again. Never again will I go to another gym. I never thought it would happen to me. Don't let it happen to you.

The Obsession with avoiding germs is that in any envirement where many different people are dripping sweat, aka- expressing a body fluid, you are exposed to a possible breeding ground for germs and bacteria. I know somone who contracted a staph infection on his back from working out at 24hour fitness. In fact, there was a small group of people who develped infections from tht particualr gym, causing the managment to do a thurough re-clean and enstate notice of using the disinfectant.
Oh, and just wiping the sweat off is not enough. Yes the puddle is not gone, but wait, now you have forcibly inbedded the germs into the pores of the seat cushion so that they may breed and infect from their cosy little home in that seat. Im not saying its epedemic, but people need to take basic precautions when exposing themselves to a samll envirenment that is frequented by a large amount of people with varying health/cleanliness states and standards.
Spray the damn disinfectant and put the towel onto the bench before you sit!!

Soooo...let's sit on our couches, use sanitized remote controls, and have less stress about the germs at the gym!?? I actually bet that living a healthy lifestyle by getting enough exercise and eating right would carry benefits that outweigh any harm germs could do...just wash your hands (while exercising at the gym or at home or even when buying cookies at the grocery store)....

The title does not reflect the contents of the article. This is ridiculous.

The obsession is easy, people at the gym don't always practice good hygeine. Ever see someone next to you sweating like crazy on the treadmill or cross trainer? They are dropping sweat everywhere and don't have a towel anywhere in sight. Then when they are done they walk away from the machine without even a cursory wipe off. Then there's the people that use the ab machines without a towel that fill them with hair "juice." If you use hair product be considerate and use a towel so the next person doesn't get your product on their hair.

Myself and a gym-exclusive friend both contracted MRSA. The commonality was our gym. I would suggest to those who've read this and will likely disregard or forget this warning to reconsider.

MRSA is exceptionally painful. I lost two months of work as a result of the infection. I had it twice, both were located in an area where gym contact is likely. I am female, I use all the equipment with my personal trainer. I wear soffe shorts (aka: cheerleader shorts), tanks, gloves, etc. There is no way to avoid skin-to-machine contact.

Wash your hands, use the alcohol provided, or bring your own. Use clean towels. Everything this article indicates is factual. But the biggest thing I suggest is don't be such a meat head to think you are invincible. On the flip side, don???t be a germaphobic paranoid freak. Be clean. Had I not had insurance the medication alone was over $3,000.00, ,not including the tri-weekly visits for packing/repacking of the incision site. Total cost could have been over $15,000.00 with meds, visits, docs, etc.

What is this obsession about avoiding germs? I work out every day and I certainly don't "disinfect" every bench I sit down on. Of course use some common sense: if you leave a pool of sweat be considerate and wipe it off. I don't remember ever getting ill because of using a gym. Gyms by nature are going to be somewhat dirty places, go in and work out and work hard and stop obsessing about germs!

How to avoid the germs on the machines - use the weight racks! Start training movements instead of muscles and you will be supprised at how much healthier you are...

Not sure why anyone is worried about the germs on the machines anyway, what with all of the color-coordinated Under Armour, gloves, sweat bands and shoes, your skin never touches the machines...

I workout at the YMCA in Orchard Park, NY and I must say as far as the equipment goes, I have never seen a person leave a piece of equipment without wiping it down first, so I am comfortale not wiping it down first, and always make sure to wipe it down after. All the other suggestions I already do or do not have to worry about. I do not take showers at the gym. I just go hone and do that.

I work out at 24 hour fitness sport and it is a festering lounge for germs...there are pools of water in the cup holders on the treadmills that sit stagnant for days...sweaty paper towels rolled up in balls and shells of pistachios nuts was the latest and greatest that I came across while running the other day...there is enough dust to give you asthma...It is disgusting! The health department could have the place shut down!

I think taking precautions is a definite must in the locker room. I caught a virus from sitting on the bench in my underwear. I don't sit on it now unless I have some clothes on. I don't wipe down the machines, but I definitely use the sanitizer after I use the machines so my hands are germ free if I touch my face.

You people are all paranoid I have been going to gyms for the last 20 years and it is after all a gym yes you should wipe down the seats after you use them, but if you are so concerned with germs just stay home in your little bubbles.
