I work at a gold's gym, and you would be very very surprised at how nasty they really are! This article doesn't even describe how gross they may be. Do wash your equipment down before and after, and press for antibacterial disposable wipes. Some gyms reuse the same rag...and it's just gross. And if there is a pool at your gym, make sure staff is constantly checking the pH balance, and chlorine.

Ewwww!!!!!! I always cleaned the equipment at the small gym I worked out at. Some of the people working out would look at me like I was phobic. Now that I've moved to a larger city I have my workout equipment at home.

When I joined a gym, I was very disgusted watching people sweating all over the machines, and just leaving them without cleaning. Naturally, before every machine I used, I cleaned prior to getting on it, and after I'm finished. People looked at me with 10 eyes, which I thought was ridiculous. Funny, how when I'm there now... a lot of the members start cleaning their machines after they use it. Common sense to me!

All i know is we cant just clean the mashines evry time we go a gym for various reasons,in most of the gyms mashines are occupied without rest so we cant just take our own time cleaning the mashines, moreover we wont be touching the whole equipment so its a better practice to use a towel between mashines and our body.and its a good idea to wear sports trousers instead of shorts to avoid bare skin in contact with mashines.overall the writers view is good though there is a bit exaggaration.

sfwanderer: What gym are you going to that would discourage you from cleaning your machine? Who are these people who give you "incredulous looks"? How many machines are you using for "45 seconds" per machine to tack on 15 minutes to your workout? Seriously, let me know so I can avoid it all. A gym isn't going to be the most sanitary place, but I have never seen a gym that discourages cleanliness, nor one that doesn't make disinfectant readily available at all times.

I just would like to say kudos to the author of this article. Gyms are nasty breeders many things...In general it would be nice if the staff sprayed down the equipment every now and again to cut back on germs. I know that working as a personal trainer I am very concious of cleaning up after each client. So as for carrying around cleaning materials...that is not our responsibility. It is the gyms owner's responsiblity to take care of the gym and locker room so that we can all have a safe and happy experience at the gym. After all we are going there to make a difference in ourselves. We shouldn't be cleaning things that we pay an arm and a leg to use.

Hello? Carry paper towels and disinfectant and clean each machine before you use it? Are you mad? Most gyms won't allow you to use cleaning fluids on their machines. Taking just 45 seconds to clean a machine would add at least 15 minutes to my workout. Then there's the incredulous looks you would get from other members. Although I do recommend washing your hands at least immediately at the end of the workout, say before you eat or touch food.

Why is this article titled, "Six Gym Health Hazards" when it lists six suggestions for avoiding a single hazard: infection? Shouldn'the title of the article reflect the content of the article? Is there an editor on the payroll at MSNBC?

Pifffle, I don't think that Justin was suggesting that you shower together. Are you a member of the Senate?

You forgot the most obvious one: TAKE A SHOWER AFTER WORKING OUT! Sounds obvious but many people don't do it. -- Justin
