McCain's Unseen Adversary: Ageism

He faces more prejudice over his age than Obama and Clinton do over issues of race and sex.

The age issue with John McCain goes beyond his physical health. There are generational issues going on here as well, which are also playing out between Clinton and Obama to a certain extent. Greatest Generation, Boomers and GenXers have radically different value systems - that's going to be significant in the coming months.

Clinton is suffering from sexism. Mccain from Agism. Obama does not suffer, naturally, from anything he is the messiah that has come to deliver us from evil. And of course if someone dares say one bad thing about him that person suffers from racism. Oh dear!

EVERY STATISTIC AND POLL HAVE Unanimously INDICATED THAT OBAMA WOULD DEFEAT McCAIN IN A NATIONAL ELECTION. THIS IS THE REASON OBAMA WILL BE THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE.

McCain WILL BE DEFEATED IN A LAND SLIDE BY OBAMA in A NATIONAL ELECTION.
THE ECONOMY AND THE WAR are AGAINST McCAIN. HIS ONLY SOLUTION IS TO MAINTAIN THE STATUS QUO"FOR A HUNDRED YEARS". WHO IS GOING TO PAY FOR THIS. NOT ME, PERHAPS HOLY ROLLER CAN FUND THIS HUNDRED YEAR AGENDA McCAIN HAS READY FOR ALL TAX PAYING AMERICANS.

HE WANTS TO KEEP THE BUSH TAX CUT'S INTACT. AS KARL ROVE MENTIONED IN HIS MOST RECENT ARTICLE IN NEWS WEEK, the REGAN ERA IS OVER. SUPPLY SIDE ECONOMICS IS NOT THE ANSWER.

THE MIDDLE CLASS WILL HAVE TO SUFFER UNDER McCAIN.
HE BELIEVES THIS AMERICAN SUFFERING IS NECESSARY IN ORDER TO CARRY OUT A MISGUIDED FOREIGN POLICY WHICH IS BASED ON FEAR AND NOT REALITY. IN FACT McCAIN'S AGENDA IS BADLY OUTDATED AND VERY UNPOPULAR AMONG MANY CONSERVATIVES IN HIS OWN PARTY, manY oF WHOM WILL VOTE FOR OBAMA OR STAY HOME IN NOVEMBER.

REMEMBER THE PROBLEMS IN IRAQ AND PALESTINE AND THE REST OF THAT REGION ARE
POLITICAL in NATURE. McCAIN is a great MILITARY MAN. BUT HIS EXPERTISE WAS NEEDED in TWO THOUSAND TWO, not now. WE NEED CHANGE. AND OBAMA WILL BE ABLE TO UNITE FACTIONS IN ORDER TO BRING STABILITY TO THAT REGION.

I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO OBAMA APPOINTING McCAIN TO BE THE NEXT HEAD OF HOMELAND SECURTIY.

McCAIN's VIABILITY TO BECOME PRESIDENT EXPIRED FOUR YEARS AGO.

I think McCain's age is going to be very important as to his choice of running mate. People will have to very comfortable that in case something happens to him that the vp will be someone you could readily accept as president. Has anyone else picked up on how many times McCain has remarked about being superstitious? I don't think that is something I would advertise while running for the presidential nomination or public office - thoughts?

Anyway, at the very least, it will be an interesting election, and as for for my reply to your last post, it was probabaly unecessary, have a nice day.

I was raised to believe you catch more flies with honey...just wanted to sweeten you up before I gave you a set down. My husband asked me to inform you that he is very happy and appreciates, but does not require, your sympathy. I believe this election will be a very memorable one and although I have not yet decided who I will vote for, I always appreciate the input of others. You are obviously very passionate about your beliefs and I respect you for that. I hope that your candidate of choice wins and proves to be an effective president.
A good evening to you, also.

    My Dearest Brewha,
Based on your poor spelling, your lack of proper grammer and your inability to read and comprehend the comment I made, it is not my vote the American population should fear. My point was that any type of discrimination, whether race, gender, religion or race should not play a factor. By the way, Mitt Romney has a name, but way to catergorize him as "The Mormon".
As far as what I do believe: The belief that the American flag should be flown above any other flag when on American soil is not discrimination - it's patriotism. Believing, that an immigrant to this country should follow the mandates set down by the government in order to become an American citizen is called being a "law-abiding" citizen. Stealing identities in order to work or having a baby on American soil in order to gain access to American money is not an acceptable method of coming to this country. I don't group an entire race into this category. I blame a select few who have shed a poor light on the rest of their ethnic community.
As I stated in my comment, the true legacy of a president is not recognized until years after he/she leaves the office. Government programs don't begin as soon as the bill is signed - it can take years until they reach their full potential. My point was: It is not how long a person is in office that dictates what gets done. It is what is accomplished in the time allotted that matters.
I find it ironic that you accuse me of blaming the democrats for my opinions and beliefs (which, if you had actually read my comment, I never ONCE placed blame on another individual or group for my personal woes), and yet, you rail against the Republicans and place blame at their feet for everything that is wrong with this country today. Calling the kettle black, wouldn't you say. You proved by very first point - "Intolerance will not be tolerated."
But, let's explore your theory regarding the "blame game". Fred, the people greeter at Wal-Mart (yes, he was a real human being and not a theory), worked from 1994 until his death in 2001 (at the age of 90). Based on your own argument, Bill Clinton and the Democratic party are to blame for the bankruptcy of his pension fund. I personally would blame the poor money management of the Board of Directors and Fred's short sightedness when planning for his retirement, but you opened this door...
Finally, you profess to know so much more about how the government operates than I do. So you must be familiar with the Constitution and the Bill of Rights? The first Ammendment states that I am allowed to express my opinion. So you may not like what I have to say, but you have no right to tell me that I can't say it...Oh wait, should I have said "You can't DISCRIMINATE against me"?

Ann Coulter, one for the most militant fear mongering republicans that exists today swore recently she would rather vote for Hillary Clinton than John Mccain. This is an exciting time for the growing majority of decent people left in this country, I can feel the storm brewing now as we get closer to crunch time the entire republican party is now being forced to choose between a democratic pandering weeny and a high and mighty rich mormon, this has to be their worst nightmare. I can't wait to start watching smoke come out the ears of the old republican guard as they watch their party taken over by the enemy. haha!

you've got to be kidding me! You're article is really reaching. McCain is so hated and loathed inside the republican party and the animosity he creates everywhere he goes is just building by the hour. Everytime he appears in the media right now, he's in the wrong place with the wrong people. The republican party is jumping off his ship in mass numbers today. I think by the time Tuesday gets here, his ship would come sailing in, will have sunk. Witnesses and recordings are coming out everywhere today of his tremendous disdain for conservatives and the republican party. People endorsing Romney are flocking in by the hour literally. It's unbelievable what I'm watching today. Even the New York Times had a scathing article on him this morning. It listed everything he has done to try to tear down republican values and core principles from voting against a constitutional amendment defining marriage, to taking a swipe at the first amendment. It even mentioned how some of his acts were near treasonous. Conservatives aren't just going to put up with him telling outright lies about Romney and telling them to believe it bacause he is above them, they are stupid and they should just listen to his words without question. Michael Reagan also had a scathing article on McCain today. Reagan believes that no man could hate his own party more than McCain. Ronald Reagan doesn't believe that his father would line up behind McCain at all! Reagan can't stand anything McCain says or stands for. I can certainly feel the tide turning. Republicans just need to show up in mass numbers Tuesday and end the McCain candidacy. It's been a joke that turned into a nightmare.

Uh you realize it is the republican party that has driven this country into unimaginable debt over the years and turned this nation into a global laugh a minute and guaranteed that your children and you will not have social security benefits, healthcare or social support programs when you are drooling on yourself. And i can see by the way how you talk about people from other countries you think racism is ok. FYI republicans have dismantled this country from the inside piece by peice forcing that poor old 80 year old lady at mcdonalds to work 3 jobs, and wo do you think bankrupted that old man's pensions fund? and all they have to do is play to your ignorance by making you beleive someone else it to blame. so you guys blame the democrats and mexicans because they told you to, and it works becuase you would rather blame someone else than accept you don't understand how this nation is operated. i'm sorry but don't vote and keep your opinions to yourself , we don't need people like you in the way, our generation has a lot of work ahead of us.

  • Posted By: Midwestmom @ 02/01/2008 6:09:06 PM

Did you ever see that episode of Southpark - "Intolerance will not be tolerated"? That should be the Democratic motto. We can't discuss race. We can't discuss gender. I'm not allowed to be intolerant of illegal aliens flying the Mexican flag ABOVE the American flag and insisting on speaking Spanish (or Korean or any other language that is not English) and I am expected to welcome them with open arms and make sure that I keep working three jobs so they receive their welfare checks. BUT AGE IS OKAY TO DISCRIMINATE AGAINST?
Whether I'm for or against McCain will be based on his political views and what he plans to do to help this nation. If you truly study American government, a President's legacy is how he helped or hindered this nation twenty years after he his term is over. Did he lay down groundwork for future Presidents to build on? The right groundwork can be laid in a year. McCain could keel over at 73, but if that year in office was a good one, then it was worth electing him president.
If McCain is "too old" to be president, then I dare you to walk in to your local McDonalds and tell the 80 year old woman behind the counter that she is too old to take your order (even though she has to work because she is from the era that believed the government would take care of her). Don't forget the 90 year old people greeter at Wal-Mart that is working because his pension plan went bankrupt. Never mind the Supreme Court decision that states that age cannot be a factor when hiring an employee, anymore than race or gender. As a thirty year old, I stand up and say: "Let the 65 and over unite!". Otherwise, you will just be expected to rollover and die in order to stop your burden on society.

John McCain is another Bob Dole, a war hero but very old and showing it. He cannot compete against a younger, vibant oponent. In the United States, our president must look presidential and act like it at all times. John McCain does not. Only Romney and Obama fit that mold. But Obama lacks experience of any kind and showed last night that he really can't stand up to a woman when it counts. Obama was too nice and instead of taking her down, he ensured Hillary will going to walk all over him next week. Romney has gotten a bad rap by people who want McCain to win the nomination. But Mitt is much more capable of beating either Clinton or Obama in the general election because he was a governor, has the resources, the business and economic background needed by this country and he looks like a president more than any other candidate.

The last thing we need in this country is another confused disconnected old guy from the vietnam era making decisions about how we should guide this country into the future. Guys like mccain and bush are always trying to figure out how to go backwards rather than forwards i.e. the last 8 years.... these guys are going to babbling over their oatmeal in 20 years their time is over. We have to have a young progressive thinker someone that still has a future and has perspective we don't need someone who thinks talking tough is necessary, i'm sick of wars, stop with the warring you freakin' old people, us young people have found better things to do with our time, like trying to solve the problems you old idiots keep creating and having our arms and legs blown off on baghdad streets . WE DON'T CARE YOU WERE IN VIETNAM. What the hell does anything have to do with vietnam man! -Lebowski

Age is a real concern; gender and ethnicity are not. If McCain were to be elected to two terms, he would be 80 by the time he left office. Perhaps he would be as strong and vital as he is today, but there is a real risk that his health or, more importantly, his mental faculties, could decline. Discrimination is not wrong; in fact, as voters we are called to discriminate. Discrimination based on arbitrary factors or bigotry is wrong. Questioning McCain's qualifications is a responsibility.

McCain may be a nice guy, but I don't want him to be my president. I would prefer Romney. Not because of McCain or his age. I want someone better. I tired of having a president that stumbles over his words (Bush) or is having an affair with an intern (Clinton). I want a president that is smart, hardworking and is honorable in regards to his family. I want a president that is a winner in life and gives the power back to the states.

I fail to see why common sense has to be labled as discrimination. McCain is a fine politician but that doesn't change the fact that he is an elderly man one tiny bit. Calling it ageism will not change how brutally the schedule of a President will be for him any more than it did the last time we had someone of his age in the white house. President Regan was also "bright" and "vibrant," during his first campaign and by the time he left he was significantly cognitively impaired. The fact that a 71 year old man is more likely to suffer these sorts of maladies is not descrimination. It is common sense. Some may be willing to make that gamble because of McCain's good qualities. Those who do not have nothing to appologize for.

OBAMA was against the war. THIs is a big advantage over McCain. Keep in mind he is willing to stay for a hundred years there. Barak matches up much better against McCain than Hillary. The Democratic establishment realizes this and will make sure OBAMA WINS the nomination. WE cannot AFFORD to lose the WHITE HOUSE to the republicans.

  • Posted By: eddiewhere @ 02/01/2008 5:29:50 AM

WE owe a lot to the CLINTON's for what they did in the ninety's. THOSE were the BEST OF TIMES for the majority, RICH, MIDDLE CLASS and the least fortunate. Unfortunately scandal and nine eleven have overshadowed the CLINTON successes. I am voting for OBAMA because we need to overcome divisivness. We need our children to learn that working together to overcome obstacles is "the way to go". Racism, destroying individual character and being less than honest is a bad example to set for our children. THIS is why McCain and OBAMA would be the best candidates to represent America to the world and to our children. IF we allow our youth to learn that winning at all costs works, then we cannot complain in the FUTURE.
WE HAVE TO SEND A MESSAGE.

OBAMA's IDEAS DURING THE DEBATE WERE VERY CLEAR. HE DOMINATED ON FOREIGN POLICY. WHY.
HE wants to set a date for withdrawl and force the KURDS, SHIITES AND SUNNIS to come together. THE CURRENT policy is just making local warlords richer and richer. IT ALSO MEANS WE WILL SAVE A LOT OF MONEY THAT IS NEEDED HERE AT HOME. THERE IS NO DOUBT OBAMA WILL WIN CALIFORNIA AND NEW YORK. AMERICA CANNOT CONTINUE TO BABYSIT OTHER COUNTRIES. AMERICAN LIVES ARE NOT WORTH IT. HOW CAN ANYONE ARGUE THAT AMERICANS SHOULD DIE FOR IRAQ. IRAQ IS A MONEY MAKER FOR A FEW AND A TAXPAYER BURDEN FOR MANY(eddiewhere2008). THIS IS A FACT. IF THOSE FEW WERE GOING BANKRUPT WE WOULD BE OUT OF THERE FASTER THAN YOU CAN SAY CHANGE.

OBAMA HAS THE BEST CHANCE TO WIN NATIONALLY. EVERY STATISTIC AND POLL SUPPORT THIS FACT. He WILL WIN THE NOMINATION. HILLARY talked too much and OBAMA is just more BELIEVABLE
