A Messy Marriage
As for Yahoo, it's struggled to find a direction for years. It's a search engine. It's not a search engine. It's a content creator. It's not a content creator. Terry Semel is a genius. Terry Semel is gone. Visitors to the hallways of the companies' purple and yellow California palaces are greeted with confused employees and empty cubicles depopulated by an endless series of reorganization efforts. Microsoft's ability to solve these problems will determine whether or not "MSFT-YHOO" turns out to be another "TWX-AOL."
In the end, the winners may prove to be online advertisers, who will see the potential for resulting stronger competition for Google to drive down ad rates and provide new advertising services. Google, to be sure, won't take this tie-up lying down, as its recent bid for wireless spectrum exemplifies. Microsoft investors beware.

Comment: Yahoo is a mess, a confusing failure that is heading for oblivion. Microsoft's failures with search and portals is legendary. So how are these 2 incompetents going to turn into a single powerhouse? The folks at Google are laughing all the way to the bank. I believe Microsoft will not find Yahoo worth even a fraction of the purchase price by this time next year. Too bad MS is not using that pile of cash to get useful products out the door on time (MS SQL 2008) and useful applications to run on Vista PCs for business and consumers. One reason business is loath to run Vista is that there no benefits to do so that are worth the coin -- where are the killer apps that we must have and that only run on Vista? Oh right, there aren't any....
