Jimmy Carter comes from a long dead era, Obama came from such a different background. He is religious but not to the extreme like Carter. But I can see where the comparison can be made but I think Obama is aware of the similarities and would be wise to distance himself from the Carter persona.

<In all probability, she actually agrees with Obama's stand. She is just calculating that it would anger Cuban-<Americans in Florida and New Jersey. Thanks to Mr Zakaria, I'm going to support Obama. Till I read this column I have supported Hilary, sent money, and argued with my sons about their merits. I think I've wanted a reason to believe. I'm 51, and cast my first presidential vote for Jimmy Carter. I've had this gnawing fear that Obama is another version of Jimmy Carter. All innocent virtue who will fail when he gets into the razored *** fight pit that is Washington. Much like Carter. I reasoned that Hilary had survived that same arena and would be more qualified. The word calculating bugged me. But the Cuba policy is a good example. Our country needs a radical departure from what we've endured during the Bush years. I'm prepared now to risk disappointment and embrace hope again. Go Barack go. Hilary would make an excellent secretary of state.
I'm not going to argue with my kids, we're on the same side now. I just wish Barack would say from the inaugral podium, ".....our long national nightmare is over."

This is why I enjoy your commentary. It IS a new world and we have to lead in a new way or we will not be leading at all. That's not to say we "throw the baby out with the bath water," but we have to move beyond labels and political boxes. We need to try new approaches and be prepared to alter them should they fail. We can't move forward if we fear taking a first step. I'm old and looking for our government to look beyond its constrained self-interest to make headway for a better world before I move on to the next world.

"Your Beauty shines bright like the stars in heaven." Hahaha. That is really hilarious. Is she running for a beauty pagent or the commander in chief.

I love to see the two of them working together. I dream of a time that one of them would say hey you go for the Presidency and I'll go for the vice presidency and as our first act of good will we will take all of this $ we are spending and create something worthwhile. Ok back to reality it is nice to see people working together, if that is what they want from the people then they better model that behavior first. We need you Hillary as a teacher and roll model to show us how to run a noble, honest and hard working day's work and we will take your lead. Go Hillary. Your Beauty shines bright like the stars in heaven.

Conservative writers do not have an equal voice in the mainstream media and this is in essence thought control and censorship. One thing is for sure, the mainstream media outlets are not objective or fair in their reporting.

"I am not surprised Obama is doing so well so quickly. As a candidate if you have 24/7 mainstream media on your side and they are eager to give you a free ride, how can you not get ahead?"
This is of course clear. The media creates the candidates that they want people to vote for. And they are undeniably liberal.

Might be racism and bigotry just in your narrow mind. The Reality must be a judgement of the facts, not just an abstract and theoretical philosophy. In fact, it was "the 911 attack" based on the religion or what ?!!..And where were coming from the terrorists?! From Alaska or Patagonia ?!...Why we have to invest the American value into a Horse Trojan ?! If you want to make some experiences do it yourself, not for all Americans !!

You've got to be kidding me. You don't actually believe that nonsense about Obama not pledging allegiance or turning his back to the flag? It's nothing more than a smear campaign against him and none of it is true. That kind of bigotry and racism really has no place in the Democratic Party.

It is becoming more and more obvious to people like the Kennedys that Sen. Obama is the only person able to provide what America has lacked for many years now ??? real leadership. Obama is the first one coming away from the JW Bush breed of ???leaders???- petty, conceited, inefficient, readily submissive to narrow private interests. Hilary Clinton may have some edge over Bush but she belongs to his age of sterile political leadership.
Sen. Obama belongs to another world. We can still choose one or the other. This is the message long-standing American heritage families are delivering now.

I would not vote for a guy that does not pledge allegiance to our flag , and gives his back towards the flag.He also does not places his right hand onto his heart while singing the national anthem or with the pledge of allegiance. Hmmm. scary!!!

How can the election officials know that the Hispanic or Latino voters are citizens of the U.S.? We continue talking about immigration problems. Can it be that some of those Hispanic or Latino voters are illegals? It makes me wonder.

I think Obama will be more pro Arab because of his father, grandfather and stepfather' heritage. He said if elected as president, he will talk to Iran, which answered of possible normalization of relationship. He said he opposed the war with Iraq. Both countries are Arab. I want to know his position on the middle east - Israel, the Palestine and the peace process.

Hillary and Obama are both products of their respective generations; hardly a surprise. The question is: have we reached the point of a generational change? The WW II generation controlled the White House until Bill Clinton; are the boomers ready to pass the torch after only 2 presidents?

Re Cuba: The failed policy is our automatically granting political asylum to anyone who rows the 90 miles to Fla. Castro has no internal opposition because they all come here instead of staying in Cuba and opposing the Castro government. The anti-Castro forces will never bring down his government from Miami.

I love pundits who can read candidates minds. Who wrote this? "To reassert our nonproliferation leadership, I will seek to negotiate an accord that substantially and verifiably reduces the U.S. and Russian nuclear arsenals. This dramatic initiative would send a strong message of nuclear restraint to the world, while we retain enough strength to deter others from trying to match our arsenal. I will also seek Senate approval of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty by 2009, the tenth anniversary of the Senate's initial rejection of the agreement. This would enhance the United States' credibility when demanding that other nations refrain from testing. As president, I will support efforts to supplement the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. Establishing an international fuel bank that guaranteed secure access to nuclear fuel at reasonable prices would help limit the number of countries that pose proliferation risks." Hey Fareed I'll give you one guess. But it's understandable if you haven't seen it. It only comes from the journal you used to edit.

I think the article presents a good analysis of the mindset of the two candidates based on their experience. It???s helpful since they seem so similar in many of their policy proposals. However, I do want to point out that Mr. Obama???s Cuba policy of allowing family visits and remittances to Cuba is hardly audacious. Mrs. Clinton actually voted to end both of these restrictions in the past. Mr. Obama has not proposed to end the embargo or the travel restrictions on Americans. The biggest effect of these policies has been to give the Cuban government a scapegoat for every economic woe suffered on the island, of which there have been many, thereby helping to shore up the government during difficult economic circumstances. It seems to me that Mr. Obama is still hoping for some Cuban American votes, and more importantly cash, by making an important, but very limited change in these failed policies. He can, and must, do better. Interestingly enough, only Mike Gravely and Ron Paul have proposed ending all restrictions on trade, family connections and travel with Cuba.
