I always look forward to reading Zakaria's articles in Newsweek. I may not always agree, but I do respect his what he has to say. On this, I can. Our Cuban policy clearly has been a joke for many, many years.

I very much liked Fareed Zakaria's reference of the need to change the status quo in US-Cuba relations, and Barack Obama deserves great support for his efforts in this area. But as I write here:

Obama's out of the box approach on Cuba has not been matched by his approach to the Middle East or other major foreign policy challenges.

It is becoming more and more obvious to people like the Kennedys that Sen. Obama is the only person able to provide what America has lacked for many years now ??? real leadership. Obama is the first one coming away from the JW Bush breed of ???leaders???- petty, conceited, inefficient, readily submissive to narrow private interests. Hilary Clinton may have some edge over Bush but she belongs to his age of sterile political leadership.
Sen. Obama belongs to another world. We can still choose one or the other. This is the message long-standing American heritage families are delivering now.
whoever goes home triumphantly in election, one must keep in mind that there is a big responsibility ahead after winning and that is to recuperate what America had lost during Bush's admin and "no one says it will be easy" . At least, it's not Bush anymore.
Hillary Clinton, under fire about her commitment to civil rights because of her campaign's racial coding, has lately been loudly proclaiming her fealty to the Democratic Party's best traditions on human rights.
However, just two years ago, Hillary--the purported "expert" on international relations--said there should be "lawful authority" for torture in some cases--and Bill Clinton reportedly still supports it.
(See, for example, www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0907/Hillary_and_torture_audio_version.html )
Bill and Hillary's stand was opposite to that of every other major Democratic presidential candidate in 2007-2008, and the heat she took for it caused her to make one of her famous "flip flops."

Fareed is right. This is the main reason so most progressives do not support Hillary. Most of us believe that her Iraq vote, and her other recent hawk-ish votes, were political calculations. Let's be clear about the whole Iraq thing--anyone who was paying attention at the time knew that the administration had decided to go to war, but were putting together a diplomatic dog and pony show to try to convince everyone that they were actually weighing their options. Many democratic leaders were too cowardly to oppose the Senate vote on Iraq in a post Sept 11th climate.
I can't vote, because I am a Candian, but even if I did, I would have a hard time deciding.
The best solution would be, Hillary with Obama as VP or reversed.
The Iraq War is one of the most defining moments in American history, circa 2003.
The men and women who have died in Iraq aren't coming home. Except for a belief in a Heaven for them to reside, they are gone forever. If they didn't have children, even their seed died with them.
A fundamental question about the War and the election is how did Hillary get it so wrong and Obama get right?
Did the Junior Senator have access to one of NASA's satellites that can see distant galaxies light years (9.4605284 × 10 ^15 meters) away from earth, spin it around, zoom in on Iraq, and see that there were no weapons of mass destruction?
Maybe, he simply went online, accessed one of the free-access Virtual Earth satellites, and did it.
Maybe, he knows that America has the most powerful and sophisticated weapons known to man, and could push a button and send Iraq and the Iranian Republican Guard into the ether, if necessary.
At this moment in American history, America doesn't need a white male President, the first female President, or the first black President...
...real leadership, sound judgment, and the ability to restore America to its once respectable status on the World stage is what America needs.
I agree. Hillary's position re NYS driver's licenses for undocumented folks is another example. She seems to know that allowing it is the right thing to do for pragmatic reasons but considered it too much of a political risk. She probably had visions of Lou Dobbs dancing in her head. She's not timid, she's dishonest.
I am really tired of the press articles that claim to know Hillary Clinton. My wife and I have watched all of the Democratic debates since the start of the primary and caucus season. We find nothing about Hillary is timid. She is strong, confident, thoughtful and wouldl be an outstanding President, certainly head and shoulders above the President we have had for the seven years..
This article is drivel. What do you think it took to get Ted Kennedy's endorsement? Obama is part of the machine, whether you want to believe it or not. Obama just talks about things and no one knows what he will do or if he will act. Voting "present" in the Illinois Senate over 100 times demonstrates Obama's terror of taking a stand on something, don't you think?
If you think Hillary is timid, wait til you actualy bother looking at Romney w/ the same standards, Fareed. Seriously. The man's got about as many positions as the kama sutra.
I agree with your assessment of Hillary Clinton. I used to admire her bravery when she proclaimed that the Palestinians had the basic right to live in their homeland after having visited the West Bank and seen the plight of them. She used to be a good friend of the wife of Asser Arafat. She changed her story completely when she started to run for the Senate seat in New York for fear that she should not offend the Jewish people there. .
