Why not just say that the American voter is the most dumb downed person in the Western world. The great majority of them don't vote. I have lived in Sweden for 20 years where there is a 96% voter turnout. The young generation doesn't know their own history or simple geography. I called my bank the other day about garnishments. The customer service representative had never heard of the word--a banker? You tell me.

Mr. Harris, your points are well taken. If anything generates fear and anxiety in me, it is the ease with which my fellow citizens can be manipulated and their unwillingness to grasp the basic tenets of a functional democracy: to be educated and well-informed, to use logic, reason, strength, and courage in determining the best policies and representatives for our government, and to exercise the right to vote. These are our civic duties, not mere idealism. Where have they gone?

      You are so right.

Let me propose here for those who favor Clinton a second and say it's it's 1988 all over again and a bill comes up through the legislation that says America should become a nation run by two families for the next 30 years. Ask yourself if you would have supported such a piece of legislation. America was not created so that family dynasties could run this country for an extended period of time. That's why there are 8 year terms, specially so that we did not turn into a monarch system after FDR served 4 terms, another president with a bloodline. While this isn't an argument based on a factual premise, it's an argument based on the wisdom of history. History proves that monarchical societies fail, over and over throughout history. While it didn't fail with Teddy R. and FDR, it sure as heck failed with the Bushes. The British Royal Family still enjoys it's title, at least they do not have any control (unless you believe the conspiracy theorists of the Rothschilds' and the 13 families of power).

GustoMaybe: It's actually worse than that -- Bush was VP in 1980 (when I was born), so there's been a Bush or Clinton in the white house my entire life. Why are folks surprised when young people don't vote for Clinton?

The comments here seem totally unrelated to the article in question, ironically demonstrating the truth of the proposition that people are driven far more powerfully by raw emotion than by reason. Will we continue to vote primarily for emotional reasons rather than for clear evidence, stated positions, and demonstrated competence? The dominance of one party or another's candidates has been based almost exclusively on the ability of campaigns to harness and direct our emotions rather than our logic. (Witness the willingness of those suffering under GOP pro-rich, pro-business policies to continue to support candidates against their own economic interests.) My greatest hope is that people finally will use their brains to select the best persons for office, instead of being manipulated by appeals to their emotions. This article may help some to see the value of reason in their decision-making process.

Obama is equally qualified as Hillary. The biggest difference, is his ability to inspire and bring people together. A quality that Hillary clearly lacks. Obama 2008... Nay sayers want to say he is only about speaking, but he is everything that Hillary could never be as a leader. If that woman was not married to Bill, she wouldn't even be in the race.

MY LAST WORD IS, IF HE CAN'T CHANGE HIS OWN STATE OF ILLINOIS, WHAT MAKES YOU THINK HE WILL CHANGE AMERICA..........LOOK AT THE FACTS FOLKS

    GO HILLARY

Gee, and Hillary has fixed all of the problems in New York also!! Give me a break!

  • Posted By: unleashed004 @ 02/05/2008 2:59:22 AM

This Obama craze is going to extinguish itself in the next 4-6 weeks and then we'll be left with a very weak candidate for the general election. Mark these words.

The 'craze' is not built upon anything real - it's a house of cards. It will easily come tumbling down when people stop and think about it.

Nonsense! Sound's like you haven't done your homework. As an older, white prebaby boomer that remembers the Kennedy's and hope, I am excited to be supporting Obama. Yes We Can!!

I went to UCLA yesterday to hear Michelle Obama speak. She was intelligent, articulate, sincere and brilliant. We would be lucky to have such a woman as our First Lady. Barack Obama inspires me in a way that I don't think I've ever been inspired by a candidate before. I feel that the democrats gave me a real choice this time. I didn't have to chose between the lesser of two evils. We had 3 strong candidates and I would have been happy with Edwards or Clinton. But when you have a candidate like Obama the choice is easy, and I will be voting for Barack Obama with both my head and heart.

CHANGE--Change what the hell does Obama mean?? Come on people, change is not always good. Remember 7 yrs. ago we got CHANGE when we got Bush. I rest my case. No substance to this man's pretty words. I'm using my head today when I go to the Kansas caucus and standing up for HILLARY. If I want to be MOVED and hear pretty words, I'll put in a Celine Dion CD. I want a President who can do the job.

OUR NEXT PRESIDENT- - HILLARY (by a brain cell)

WE LOST B/C OF NADER, AND GORE WAS A GOOD CHOICE. YOU CANT COMPARE BUSH TO OBAMA BECAUSE THE ONLY REASON THE REPUBLICANS HAD AMASSED POWER IS B/C THEY WENT THROUGH 8 YEARS OF BILL CLINTON AND HATED THEM.

    • Posted By: Braes @ 02/05/2008 1:33:11 AM

Nader will get sued off the ballot in 50 states. He has become his own book title, unsafe at any speed. Gore wouldn't have Iraq'd us.

In reference to the comment made by nurseratchetaz , although Hillary 'seems' to know what she is talking about, she has repeatedly made bad decisions from the authorizing the president to go to war in Iraq to the recent legislative on Iran. She is just trying to impress the electorate just to win votes. She still talking about mandating health insurance for everyone, the very thing, she failed to bring to light during her years at the White house. The decision to purchase health insurance solely rests on the individual or the family and not the government . What happened to the free market and our capitalist ideals. Obama on the other hand might not have Washington experience as Hillary but makes decisions not based what might be perceived right or popular but what he believes is right. You can ask any senator in the Illinois legislature or the US senate and you find out that Obama knows how to get things done. Talking about the B student, the man attended Columbia University and Harvard Law school and his professors will attest to his brilliance. Talking about Foreign policy, you should listen to other nations and you find out the US is most respected when it uses diplomacy rather force to solve international conflicts, remember Reagan with Iran and the Soviet union? The Iraq war is not Bush's War it is an american war after all Hillary was in favor of the war until things got tough.... think about it with all the experience and supposed COMPETENCY and the resultant bad decisions, who would want your president to be? Someone who is ready to make faulty decisions on DAY ONE or someone who make the RIGHT DECISIONS ON DAY ONE. Mind you the president need not be an expert on all the issues but need to be someone who can choose wisely after listening to experts. I think OBAMA HAS CERTAINLY SHOWED THE QUALITY LEADERSHIP WE ALL WANT.
