Both Clinton and Obama beleive they have a plan to reduce health insurance. Obama seems to believe that the health care industry lobbyist has skewed the market in its favor -- increasing cost to consumers. Obama also takes about using incentives to promote efficiency in the health care system. Hillary seems to rely more on creating efficiency coupled with lots of tax credits.

Bottom line is that we are not sure at the moment whether Hillary or Obamas intervention in the marketplace will actually reduce healthcare cost. We wont know until we try. There is a good liklihood that market costs will not fall.

Therefore, do we really want to mandate people to buy health insurance even if costs do not come down? Can you imagine the windfall the Health industry will get if we mandate health insurance when the cost do not actually decrease?

Lets stick with no mandates (Obamas plan) until we are sure that health care is really affordable.

Obamas' plan is simple make it low enough for everyone to afford also cupped with prevention, teaching people how to eat and what to eat, because it is obvious with so many people sick we do not know how to eat. So i do understand his plan. Now as for Hillary she is a sell out she has taken money for the insurance before what is to stop her from doing it again.

Comment: Well as I see it, Hillary sold out to the insurance compaines before what would stop her this time from selling out. According to Michael Moore on Larry King last night she has voted for all the wars. She is no different from all the people that are already running the white house now. She will tell you what you want to hear for now just to get in and later will not deliver on nothing. And if her husband did so much for black people then run on that record if it is so good. Smart black people know that the Clintions' did nothing for black people and we lost more of our so-called safety-net under Mr. Clinton than any other president. Go check it out.

Obama is promising everything to everyone. He is biggest hypocrite of all who doesn't want to show his name Hussein. If people are ralllying behind I really don't know why? because he is noone. He can get Oprah as his running mate who made money by only talking nonsense. Women who don't like to work or education go to her show. He will say anything to get votes. If he gets votes he will open doors for more entitlement for the ones who are not willing to work or whine for equality. This is the only nation where one can unity than his father's home Kenya

I don't think any of the candidates really grasp the whole health insurance issue affecting many people in this country. It is often not that we don't want to get health insurance; it is just next to impossible for us to get it. I am 50 years old and my husband is 51. My spouse has MS and still works 25-30 hours a week at a $10.25/ hr job. I am on long-term pain management for my back following repeated inoperable thoracic disc herniations behind my heart... I am unable to do any lifting/twisting or lengthy sitting and can no longer work at the job I previously held. I feel like I am healthy for my age despite my 2" thick medical records and insurance "risk". I am slender, fit, and look younger than my age. I haven't had a cold or missed a day of work this year. I have never smoked and rarely drink. I watch my diet and for the most part am a healthy eater. I am a long term (22-year) cancer survivor and have always worked full-time, even at the height of my most painful moments. I have learned to adapt my activities to my physical limitations. I am not on any narcotic painkillers, but chose physical therapy, chiropractic care, exercise, ice, a TENS nerve stimulator and alternative means of pain relief to manage my chronic pain. I do suffer with hypertension and believe it is at least partially caused from living in pain and take prescription drugs to control it. I chose to ignore several doctors' dire prognosis that I would be disabled for life and chose instead to live my life to the best of my ability. I left a good paying job of 8 years with no benefits to take one with health insurance when we found out my husband had MS. Less than a year later, l lost it due to corporate downsizing and was unemployed at age 49 for the first time in my adult life. My current employer does not offer health insurance and my husband's employer never has offered it. We have tried to get health insurance and have repeatedly been turned down. We do qualify for a state policy for the "un-insurable." It would cost us $1000 month, pay nothing until a $10,000 deductible is met, and then 50% co-pay for all allowed medical expenses. We certainly don't have $12, 0000 a year to pay for insurance that doesn't cover anything until we spend another $10,000 and then only 50%. After I was downsized out of my job we not only lost our insurance coverage but over half our previous income. I am shocked that politicians propose to fine us because we can't afford to pay over 2/3 of our income for useless health insurance and deductibles. I want to know if they plan to fine insurance companies for not offering everyone affordable effective health care coverage. I know if they plan to impose a 6% fee to employers for not offering insurance, my employer would opt for paying the fee. He says he can't afford to stay in business and pay the premiums insurance companies are asking. This idea is crazy! I don???t think it will really help anyone get health insur

Lets look at the facts they both lie and can say these lies directly to your face. I laugh at these so called plans to save money : i got the best way to save money on health care .. stop caring for everyone but the USA, holly sheeetz we save so much damn money it hurt

I think both Hillary and Obama need to stop lieing to the public. I know Hillary is tring to follow her husbands footsteps by proving that the USA can put two idiots in the office but come on.

I just can't believe newsweek has an article that isn't Obama friendly.. treating him like a politician instead of savior

  • Posted By: Duck Soup @ 02/04/2008 8:50:49 PM

This comment sounds like nitpicking to me.

I think America is ready for a change from the Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton cycle. They are tired of the same old divisive politics. They want a politician who can inspire people, and who can reach across the aisle, because that is what it will take to get anything done. We want hope, unity and change. Go Obama go!

          • Posted By: nylady58 @ 02/06/2008 11:50:53 AM

According to the artical those that faught so hard against her in 1993 felt she "learned something " of how the healthcare system works. The health care and inusrance organizers anticipated her nomination for president in 2008. They invested money in her campaign in order to influence her knowing that mandatory healthcare would be a big issue if she won the presidency.

            • Posted By: bookman @ 02/06/2008 2:34:00 PM

Comment: This is not true with Obama as well?

      • Posted By: nylady58 @ 02/06/2008 8:46:14 AM

I am a NYS resident and I can assure you that not eeryone is pleased with Hillary Clinton.

Hillary has stated, ???lobbyists are people too??? and defended her decision to take their contributions. She doesn't mind the lobbyists in Washington, after all they have supported her. When she ran for NYS Senator she received high contributions from defense contractors and the health care industry. She is the first New Yorker to sit on the Senate Armed Services Committee. Now I have to ask myself,

        1. How much did that effect her vote to go to war with Iraq?
        2. How will this effect bringing our boys and girls home?
        3. How will that effect how we conduct ourselves in Afganistan?
        4. How can she effectively work with health care to bring medical costs down?
        5. At what cost t us is she going to appease the Insurance companies?

At the time she accepted those contributions, Frederick H. Graefe, a health care lawyer and lobbyist in Washington for more than 20 years, said, ???People in many industries, including health care, are contributing to Senator Clinton today because they fully expect she will be the Democratic presidential nominee in 2008.???

???If the usual rules apply,??? Mr. Graefe said, early donors will ???get a seat at the table when health care and other issues are discussed.???

"Senator Clinton has received $150,600 in contributions from insurance and pharmaceutical companies, which she accused in 1993 of ???price gouging??? and ???unconscionable profiteering.???
The New York Times wrote who have endorsed Hillary Clinton posted this artical, Once an Enemy, Health Industry Warms to Clinton on July 12, 2006." You will find the above quotes there: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/12/nyregion/12donate.html

We will all be mandated to help further increase the profits of medical insurance companies and penalized if we don't. Obama didn't say all people wouldn't be able to be covered by insurance but that you would have a CHOICE to be covered with affordable insurance and that he would work to bring medical facilities to areas that needed them, along with working with the medical field to lower costs.

Now I ask you, was it Obama's or Hillary's health care plan that was written by the health care industry?
One hand washes the other as they say.
She still can't admit she made a mistake voting to go to war. She talks down to all of us and plays us as stupid. She talks of the negative and what can't be done. She has great experience for playing the same old man politics that has been running Washington and our lives for years.
Is that the kind of experience people want?

    • Posted By: bookman @ 02/06/2008 9:25:04 AM

Comment: America let's stop being fooled by lies, Insurance companies Auto, Healt, Home, Business, and enviroment run the Fed's with money. If we really want change then pick a person who has worked for a living and not one who is a lawyer or rich. The Fed's don't control anything special interest groups runs America and we need to elect people who will not listen to them. Until we learn this good luck in your life.

"Forcing" does not need to be seen as a "threat". It is almost like car insurance. The concept arises from "civic responsibility. But anyway, I don't think people without any significant income will be "forced" to pay up - in any plan. Well, it will be almost like another tax.

    • Posted By: dewcooper @ 02/05/2008 3:22:56 PM

It will be exactly like another tax. For the $2500 that the sample person would save by having the government pay for their healthcare, the rest of us will probably lose $5000 in the process. And notice that they are going to use 'tax credits' to control what you spend on premiums. That is not a reduction on what you PAY in taxes, but in what they GIVE you back.

Everyone could afford insurance if the gov't got rid of the IRS. An automatic 40% annual payraise...

      • Posted By: bookman @ 02/06/2008 8:53:45 AM

comment: Yes the IRS is a big burden on all American families and business. Time has come for the IRS to cease but what will we all do with a ruling community that is not fair, thinks in terms of master and slave, views profits as the all mighty right, and still has a problem with different cultures. Are we ready as good standing Americans to take back control and issue out fairness for all equally? Think about it in reality sense.

WHY CAN'T THE GOVERNMENT RUN INSURANCE? IT APPEARS TO ME THAT, UNLIKE PRODUCTS SUCH AS CARS, TVS CLOTHES, AND SUCH CONSUMER PRODUCTS, COMPETETION BY INSURANCE COMPANIES DOES NOT IMPROVE THE PRODUCT. INSTEAD OF IMPROVING INSURANCE, THE PROFIT MOTIVE ENCOURAGES INSURANCE COMPANIES TO SELL COVERAGE THAT IS MORE EXPENSIVE AND LESS BENEFICIAL THAN THE CONSUMER NEEDS. IN ADDITION, DENYING CLAIMS THAT SHOULD BE COVERED INCREASES THEIR PROFITS, SINCE FEW HAVE THE RESOURCES TO FIGHT THE COMPANIES THAT DENY CLAIMS WRONFULLY. WHAT WE REALLY NEED IS A SINGLE PAYER SYSTEM, SUCH AS IN VIRTUALLY ALL OTHER DEVELOPED COUNTRIES, CONTROLLED BY THE GOVERNMENT, OVER WHICH THE ELECTORATE HAS MORE CONTROL.

    • Posted By: dewcooper @ 02/05/2008 3:15:55 PM

Now that the Fed has been controlling education, has education gotten better? How about Social Security? What has the government controlled that has gotten better and cheaper? And when has giving the Fed control over something ment MORE control for the citizenry? The best way for the voter to have control is to remove the power from the Fed, not increase it.

      • Posted By: bookman @ 02/06/2008 8:46:27 AM

Dewcooper I would like to agree but look at America now in the sense of reality. No Insurance company or Business company will aid the American people they are all greed driven for the mighty dollar and profits. At least under Fed controll the people can vote for it. As it stands now people are being screwed.

  • Posted By: glenn44 @ 02/05/2008 1:05:37 AM

  • Posted By: emmarcee @ 02/05/2008 10:22:05 AM

Member comments show utter lack of understanding about where America stands now. Keep on chanting Obama Chant. Keep dreaming. We need to destroy these Health Care behemoths who cut down services everyday, increase premiums, do middle man job for government money (Medicare medicaid) and pocket a fat check at the end. The point of the article was to show that Obama is trailing HRC in that.
