It is sad to see so many fighting about religious debates when we are about to see three options for president that are all going to bring our nation that is in a recession into another great depression. The true conservatives will never back John McCain. And now the troops will be pulled from Iraq to come home to no jobs because the illegal immigrants took them all and now Mexico has free reign in America. Get ready for World War III. It is a sad day in American history.

In light of what I believe is truly the most important issue of our times, America's economic meltdown, I am sad to see Governor Romney step down. Unfortunately that leaves us with Senator McCain, who is so out of touch with the true crises in our country that he has declared that the transcendent issue of our times is radical Islamic Jihad. Governor Romney was the only candidate in either party to successfully address universal healthcare policy, and the only one with a proven ability and record for turning around organizations and making them successful and profitable; attributes that are sorely needed in America's Chief Executive.

In spite of the fact that both Senator McCain and Governor Huckabee have both changed positions on issues during their political careers, hypocritically attacked Governor Romney for things they have done themselves throughout the campaign and offered boldfaced lies to the public, somehow, with the help of the media, they were able to make the "dishonest" and "phony" and "flip-flopper" labels stick to Governor Romney. None of the remaining leading candidates is an acceptable option. We Republicans have done ourselves a disservice by driving out one of the best candidates we have had for the presidency since Ronald Reagan.

Most people understand that just because Romney's religion has "Jesus Christ" in its name, that doesn't mean his religion believes that Jesus Christ is the son of God. Christians do not believe that one can themselves become a god, like Romney's religion believes. If you truly understand what Christian means, you would know that Romney's religion is not a sect of Christianity. If Christianity was a tree, with Catholic, Protestant, Lutheran being branches on that tree, Romney's religion is a bush planted away from that tree. I am not trying to say anthing negative or offensive about Romney's religion. I just get tired when it is correctly pointed out that it is truly not a Christian religion. As Jerry Seinfeld would say, "not that there's anything wrong with that".

    • Posted By: capnmoroni @ 02/07/2008 5:34:58 PM

It all comes down to your definition of Christianity. It has been my experience that most "mainstream Christian" churches define Christianity in such a way as to exclude the Mormon church. It is true, the Mormon church is not an offshoot of another church. It does not claim to be. But Mormons still belive in the Bible. They believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God and the Savior of the world. In fact, as my baptist friend put it, they believe most of what most Christian churches believe, they just believe in more than that.
If you or anyone else doesn't want to call Mormons Christians, be my guest. I won't lose any sleep over the matter. But my definition of Christianity encompasses all who believe in the divinity of jesus Christ and try to follow His example. And Mormons certainly fit that description.
[Feel free to insert raving, unfounded anti-Mormon nonsense below.]

NCCVAX - We believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God. Jesus Christ is our brother. Therefore, we are children of God...our Heavenly Father. Would you agree that your earthly father (NCCVAX Senior) would want the very best for you? Don't you think that our Heavenly Father wants the best for us as well? What could be better than progressing enough in the afterlife that we can become gods just like our Heavenly Father? No...he wouldn't want the best for us. That's ignorant!

Furthermore, we're defined as being non-Christians because we don't believe in the trinity. How can God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost be the same person?

Finally, thanks for being an expert on our religion!

Alot of Romney's demise was rreligious bigotry. Bigotry is a wowrd that we as Americans don't like becuase it's not PC to say it; however, it's alive and well in America. I find it offensive that the media just doesn't say what everybody else knows. The media knows it, yet they won't be truthful about the religiious bigotry in this country. Romney is a Mormon and therefore he wasn't able to get the nomination becuase of that.

Howard Fineman says more about himself than about Mitt Romney, when he claims Romney ran for President as "something he's not." Even if we decide Romney changed positions more than most candidates, why not conclude that he stretched to be electable in Massachusetts, but that his conservative presidential platform was heartfelt? I suspect Fineman wants the manifestly brilliant Romney to be a centrist rather than a conservative, because Fineman himself leans left and considers centrist positions more defensible.

I am an immigrant - a LEGAL immigrant and that's how it should be for immigrants. Enterring through the front door of the country and not the back door. This country's immigrants have helped this nation become what it is today but this country's ILLEGAL immigrants will destroy this nations's cultural and national heritage. Just wait, soon enough the US will have Spanish as it's second offiicial language just like Canada has French, and look what good that has done to that country - they have lost their national identity and the French Canadians sought separation not too long ago. We'll be looking at adding another state to the 50 United Sates, the Hispanic State.

Mr. Fineman, how dare you say that Romney was trying to be something he wasn't! He is a great man and would have been one of the best Presidents this country has ever had. He could never be like the inside politicians that would say and do anything to get elected.
His integrity and honesty are far above most people in this country. I have been honored to have had him as my Governor in Mass. We have been blessed that he has crossed are paths during his campaign. Romney's supporters are probably in pain, just as I, about his decision to suspend his campaign.
Romney gave us hope for the future of America.
Even though I can not say positivly, but it seems the hatred in your words has a bit of religous bigotry. That theme has been encountered during blogs. I am ashamed that people in this country can not look past a person's religion, sex, or color. It shows just how narrow minded some of you are.

    Mr. Fineman,
As a political independent resident of the bluest stae in the country, it is clear to me that you have no concept of just how competent and truly brilliant Mitt Romney has proven himself to be not only in his business career but as Governor of a state whose legislature was 85% Democrat and hardly friendly to him. Yet, he was able to engineer and implement the first state health-care program in the nation (something Mrs. Clinton could only dream about) and many other programs that earned him a good deal of respect from both sides of the aisle.
We here in Massachusetts know that Mitt Romney is a man of integrity and unequalled competence in the real rough and tumble world of business. It is the country's loss that he will not be at the helm at a time when this country is facing many serious economic and foreign-policy challenges. Accordingly, I feel your piece was unduly harsh and erroneous to the extent that you impuned mr. Romney's character and integrity.
I wonder if you would be so zealous if the subject were someone whose resume were far more fertile for such commentary, e.g., Mrs. Clinton.

Very well spoken, hagues. Thank you. As a fellow resident of Massachusetts, I couldn't agree more. What a loss for our country.

If you were to read Mr. Fineman's Bio, you would discover the broad experience he has had in his industry. This makes him very good at what he does. In this editorial, for example, creating a bit of controversy is part of his agenda. It's his job. Why write an article that tells just the facts? Create a stir. Throw in comments that you know will be controversial. Regardless, His article contains both fact and editorial comments. Comments are exactly that, just his opinion (Or opinion he has fabricated for this article.) Politicians do it. We all embellish the words that come from our mouths or that we type. It is human nature. It is easy to post random thoughts on a blog. It is not as easy to write an article for a job. While I don't agree will much of what Mr. Fineman is saying in this particular article, I appreciate the job he is doing. It is much more difficult and takes extreme amount of commitment to run for President. This particular campaign has been very interesting indeed. I congratulate EVERY candidate for what they are doing. They are doing something that no one here or even Mr. Fineman is doing, which is make the effort to make a change for the better. I am sad to see Mr. Romney suspend his race as I personally would have enjoyed watching his campaign after the primaries.

    My point is this - Read an editorial as you would fiction. If a story triggers an emotion, do something about it. It is only one author's opinion. Better the world around you. I've got no hard feelings about Mr. Fineman. If I did, I would work to get an education, job and position equal to his so I could publish my own personal feelings as well. By why do that we I can post for free! :}

Comment: I would like to point out that I did not state anything to ridicule your religion. You are correct that Christians believe in the Trinity. You don't need to ridicule it. I don't believe that I can become a god, but I'm not ridiculing you for believing it. And you will not be able to convince me that this belief is true.
I must have struck a nerve with my comments. Were you this agressive when you went door to door on your mission?

Sorry that this is not directly related to the article, but I am sick and tired of people complaing about these men's stands on immigration. Yes, we all understand that this country was started by immigrants, much like the immigrants comming here today. But this country was also built and founded on something else...laws! Those who have immigrated here and have followed the law to become legal citizens of this country, the more power to you...Welcome! I would love nothing more than to have more people come to this place. America is wonderful and should be a country that people admire and desire to become a part of, but that desire and action comes with a price, and that is the full-fledged loyalty and commitment to the laws of this country. So, immigrants, we welcome you, but we do that with the hopes that you are here not only to enjoy the freedoms we have, but to become a part of, roll up you sleeves, and contribute to what makes this country so great.

As for Mitt, sorry. You would've done one heck of a job. Better luck next time..if you're up to it.

Maybe it is all for the best since the polls now have McCain beating Hillary. This is a first. The first order of business for conservatives is to keep Hillary out of the White House. Maybe Obama can keep her off the ticket but now we know McCain can keep her out of the White House. And at 72, he'll be a one term Pesident or die in office. We won't have to put up with him that long. We need to force a conservative VP on him.

Are those good drugs you're taking? Perhaps you'd like to share??

Do you REALLY think McCain will succeed? Do you REALLY think Fineman and his co-lefties will continue their adoration of the "maverick" once the convention is over? Just count the references to the Keating Five come September!

Obviously there are many registered Republicans who share your misguided optimism, which is why the old media won this battle.

"Obviously there are many registered Republicans who share your misguided optimism, "

Are you even reading your own post? Not many - the majority of registered Republicans in addition to like minded Democrats and Independents will contribute to John McCain's victory. Do you really think the base is going to sit this one out? Don't count on it. Remember, this is just February. Wait til October and we'll have had a nice display of Hillary or Obama in debates and in the full throttle heat of a campaign. What red blooded conservative would want either of them in office?

There's a world out there people. A world outside of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity's broadcast studios.

        • Posted By: redinabluestate @ 02/07/2008 3:41:46 PM

Well, Maria Dee, I hope you're right. Because I think you know that Fineman & Co. are soon to do their 180 on McCain. And seeing the effect they had on the primary contest, they will be feeling confident.

Of course I will do what I must...there is hope that a McCain presidency would produce at least moderate Supreme Court appointments. But he will need Hillary as his opponent to have a chance. Obama is riding a wave of Camelot dreams, and if he can survive the Clintons, watch out!

          • Posted By: maria_dee @ 02/07/2008 3:45:30 PM

McCain against Obama is a slam dunk...are you kidding me? That's the match the Dems least want to happen...

I have a little more contact with a diverse group of people, and you'll have to trust me on this one: they are very afraid that McCain will clean Obama's clock.

yes the media will turn on McCain cause after all he does have an "R" after his name...
I believe the old bird is tough enough to meet the challenge :)
(don't forget, McCain has a very high likability quotient with the American people. If the folks perceive their fave "maverick" politician as being attacked by the media machine, it will backfire on MSM.)

Gov. Romney has dropped out of the race and used the opportunity to erase any respect I previously had for him by attacking the Democratic nominees. What will it take to explain to these people (Republicans) wars in countries like Iraq cannot be won by the use of force!!! How can you win a fight against people that are ready to die??? This has everything to do with ideology of the people you're fighting and nothing to do with might. Remember Vietnam !!! Republicans need to stop their war mongering and try different tact???s with hostile nations. WARS AREN'T THE SOLUTION. Iran isn't cooperating INVADE!!! North Korea , INVADE!!! When will it stop? Till every Man Woman and child in Iraq is dead? Till America is broke? Till our Sons and Daughters are compulsorily drafted to die ?
He said China is almost overtaking America economically and the solution is to spend Trillions of dollars overseas? Someone please give these guys a reality check. He also said the Democratic nominees want to back down on a war on terror. The war in Iraq wasn't a war on terror and killing Osama Bin Laden won't solve any problems. America 's foreign policy has to change!!! Al-Qaeda is like a starfish chop off an arm and the arm becomes a whole starfish. America don't listen to their fear mongering propaganda and do the right thing in November.

The most eloquent explanation that could be offered to anyone who wondered what happened to Mitt Romney. The millions spent on his futile campaign, brings to mind the old nursery rhyme, which I shall paraphrase: "All the King's horses, and all that he's spent, couldn't help Romney, win this event."

Romney's campaign failed not because he ran as something he is not. It failed because John McCain, Mike Huckabee and the media are religious bigots. They can deny it all you like but they are like a prosecutor that wants to get a point acros even though it's not appropriate and they know an objection is coming. They toss out the idea anyway. This county is bigoted. Religion should not have been a topic or addressed in this issue. However every chance that was affforded you'd see Romney Mormon running for president. The second issue was the dishonesty from McCain on Romney's postions.

  • Posted By: hope-3 @ 02/07/2008 5:31:39 PM

The only thing that surprises me is that he lasted this long.Romney is just another in a long line of conservative and some democratic politicians who are competely out of touch with the average voter. He looks likes a man (true or not ) who has never worked a hard day in his life?Ulike hilllary he is not a good enough actor to try and convince people he really understands their plight?.But he does have deep pockets and probably could have gone on awhile so I do commend him for stepping aside.Hillary on the other hand is already running on fumes?

Even up here in Canada, knowing very little about the guy, it quickly became obvious that the guy was a second cousin to the eel. He is shifty and to me, he came across as exactly that. The more I watched him, the more concerned I became. At least Bush will look you in the eye while he lies to you I for one, am glad that he is no longer running

    • Posted By: maria_dee @ 02/07/2008 3:39:29 PM

      "second cousin to the eel"...

That's pretty good. From the first Romney struck me as kind of oily. Don't get me wrong, if Plastic Man had gotten the nomination I would have voted for him because I'm a Republican. But a couple things about him were so obvious and Rushannitycoulter seemed to totally ignore them. First: he was elected governor of Massachusetts. Massachusetts is regularly called "The Peoples' Republic of..." by Rush et al. HELLO...would an unrepentantly liberal electorate such as that of MA have elected a "true conservative"?
      Probably not.

The other is the gratuitous shot at former Senator Bob Dole. That slam against a true American hero revealed Romney's true character.

      • Posted By: redinabluestate @ 02/07/2008 3:47:20 PM

        We meet again!

Romney's "shot" at Dole was just a 20-20 observation. We shouldn't have been making the same mistake we made in 1996...of supporting someone for the nomination just because it was "his turn." Funny how when a Republican presents an attractive image, he is regarded as "oily," but when it's a Democrat like Mr. Obama, he's the next JFK!

        • Posted By: maria_dee @ 02/07/2008 4:11:41 PM

Yes, we meet again...we have to stop meeting like this. ;)

But that's OK I like you, you know why? Because I'm red in a blue state too. And us R in B's have to stick together. R in B...get it? like r'n'b...rythym and blues.

Anyway back to your comment.: I re-read the Romney comment re: Bob Dole letter. I can see how you interpret it the way you do, so can we agree on this: that at the very least it was not diplomatic. And as for a 20-20 observation, I have one in the same vein to offer: Former Senator Rick Santorum, of my very own barely blue state - endorsed Romney. My first thought: oh great, Santorum suffered one of the worst defeats EVER in PA, (2006) election. Is this who we need to endorse a presidential contender? Nope.
          Learn from your mistakes, people!

In closing I will say this redinblue: Rushannitycoulter has it all backwards...they claim McCain is a liberal in conservative clothing. When in reality, it's the other way around! See? It's a beautiful thing!
And that's what America wants...as POTUS

Your state has hints of purple at least...CT is beyond hopeless.

I agree on Santorum...Romney should have graciously declined his offer of support, although Santorum was due to be a victim of the "Pelosi revolution," which affected every GOP in blue or bluish states (like the 2 CT Republicans...one a RINO...who were bombarded by MoveOn.org).

Yeah, I need to get back to work too, even though I am the boss!!
