Romney did NOT lose because he ran as something he is not. He lost because of anti-Mormon bigotry, because of people's aprehension about his religion, and he also was reletively unknown at the outset. Mike Huckabee was quite well known among evangelicals and McCain has been in the spotlight for years.

This is the most vicious and totally untrue article that Howard Fineman has ever written. Mitt Romney explained the reasons why he changed some of his positions along the way in his political career and his reasons were all genuine and clear. How dare Howard Fineman slander an upstanding and intelligent man like Mitt Romney? I am extremely disappointed.

Romney supporters should relax: chances are 50-50, of course, that he flip-flops and re-enters the race.

Romney lost because he is a Mormon. Mormons as a group are the most convservative people in the country. But the evangelicals have demostrated Mormons will never be a part of the "Christian Coalition." I may vote for McCain but not if the bigot Huckabee is any where near the ticket. If the Dems can get Obama past Hillary, I will vote for him.

Why is religion an issue. Is that not why America was started. Religious Freedom. You clearly have not investigated the Church of Jesus Christ of LAtter Day Saints. (Mormons) . They are conservative christians. You look stupid by your uneducated comments.

So if Romney comes back to run again in 2012 with the same convictions...will that be enough for him to be labeled sincere, Howard? People change and it's a truth of life. Look at the so called conservatives who get elected and go moderate. I doubt their changes in positions has bothered you much. You probably entered journalism with some convictions about being neutral in reporting, but now write from a liberal perspective....

Can we please stop all the rhetoric now??

This just sealed Billary's victory in November. We need 4 years of a Dem POTUS anyway so the Robin Hood party can give the world away for free so we can finally ALL quit working and just live off the government. Then, maybe when we realize how screwed we really are, we'll be ready for someone like Romney. Too bad we couldn't save 4 or 8 years of pain, and just get on with it now. But then again, what would you expect? This is America, where 90% of the voters haven't a clue what they are voting for or against.

Your under tones seem to get louder and louder, Fineman. It seems as if your article entitled "Burying Mitt" was taken right off of your personal "to do" list. It's almost as if you relish in the failure of Romney's campaign. How unfortunate to build your reputation on your obvious bitterness toward all things Republican or Conservatism. It's also notable that you never make your own case, leaving out any examples of how he was, or was not, "something he was not". Even editorials should be support by facts, Fineman.

I am so sick of people like this "author" whos smug attitude and pretense to know it all I want to puke. I can only say that if you, Mr. author, would try a little harder at disquising your extreme liberal bent we as your readers might take you more seriously. All I see is a nerd who probably sat on the sidelines and complained his whole life while others competed. Do something constructive for once and shut up.

I guess that with all this racial and gender-based politics going on over on the left, it's natural to become obsessed about religion as a demographic divide on the right. I am far more uncomfortable with Huckabee's overt us of his faith than Romney's passive defense of his right to his own. But I think some of our Mormon friends are overly impressed with the role of Romney's faith in his demise. Brownstein is correct that the flip-flopping and the ostentatious employment of personal wealth as a bludgeon did not inspire confidence in his candidacy. I like his resume but McCain's riposte that we were looking for a leader and not a manager was correct. This is not an epitaph for Romney...he has a future in politics but he needs to have confidence in what he brings to the table rather than trying to be something he is not.

Good article anyone who disagrees is a complete idiot.

This quote from his speach this morning to CPAC says everything anybody should need to hear about Mr. Romney. "If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror," How is that not calling Obama and Clinton terrorists or at the very least the dupes of terrorists. That is disgusting and this man is a jerk. Good riddance, I am glad he is gone from the national stage. Oh, I am a republican.

I disagree with you views. In looking at how to run a country, I would vote for a governor. Look at his record. That is enough said. You are just like all the other liberal media out there. you have to make a story from nothing. Just for the sake of news. Who can have a better spin. TIred of it!

So you think your an expert, so why do you work for the leftest Newsweek? I'm a proud Veteran of over 20 years yes back to Vietnam, and no way will I ever support McCain, he is a lair and losser, the media's pick for the Republicans. I was for Mitt an honest man with the ability to run business and a state. THe path this country is headed saddens me as I know we are on our way to distruction. I was born and raised in Florida and now have the shame of supporting Charlie Chist as Gov an no propective VP. You are a bias loser and should not have a media position to say your words. I was one of those Southern Baptist and took me many years to see the lies and faults of that religion and finally found the truth in the Mormon Church, I know look back and see what I was taught as a Baptist was awlful.Long Live Mitt and the American way of life

    • Posted By: RTGO @ 02/07/2008 3:34:35 PM

Dude, are you sure you are old enough to have gone to Vietnam? By the way, Romney's Mormonism wasn't the principle thing that did Romney in it was his own inauthenticity that did that. Not to mention that Rush and Coulter et al didn't help AT ALL!!

      • Posted By: maria_dee @ 02/07/2008 4:19:07 PM

"Not to mention that Rush and Coulter et al didn't help AT ALL!! "

I used to listen to Rush every lunch hour. Boy has he gone off the deep end. Ann Coulter has a good mind and has an eloquent writing style but she's losing it too. Are they just mad and stamping their feet because the good widdiw conservatives are ignoring them, the King and Queen of right wing blahblahblah?

What a sad day, indeed, for those of us who really care about the United States of America! What to do? Who to vote for? We have been completely disinfranchised, as there is no longer any viable candidate. Since any vote for a remaining candidate would be basphemous, and since not voting seem like an unacceptable option; I think we should consider "writing-in" Mitt Romney.

  • Posted By: 12mailman @ 02/07/2008 4:17:05 PM

Who is this writer? Unbelievable what type of people qualify for being journalists. Romney is a decent, classy american, and I would like you to explain why he is not. The flaming liberals who pass as journalists are truly classless.

  • Posted By: Dare270 @ 02/07/2008 3:20:29 PM

Bye Bye politics greatest "LYING SACK OF mITT", and all you over posting mormons/morons. Why don't you take a months of fast offerings and buy a clue.

    • Posted By: eshuster @ 02/07/2008 3:39:58 PM

I hope you don't have children, or will ever have children until you learn humility and how to assess a situation in the light in which it was meant. Please find time to see the more positive and rational side of things, as for now your hate-spewing rhetoric is shameful and shows a complete lack of intelligence.

      • Posted By: Dare270 @ 02/07/2008 3:51:57 PM

Shut up loser. Your an idiot.

        • Posted By: MrAnderson @ 02/07/2008 4:15:47 PM

Dare270- Not well said at all. I feel sorry for you. Whatever evil you associate with mormonism has obviously stayed with you. Let it go.

      • Posted By: MrAnderson @ 02/07/2008 4:01:09 PM

        eshuster- Very well said.

      • Posted By: Dare270 @ 02/07/2008 3:54:36 PM

Anything is better than being brought up in your evil mormonism. I should know, I am a victim of mormonism(forced into it at a very young age). Mormons should not be allowed to have children if anything

  • Posted By: MinnesotaPix @ 02/07/2008 4:10:30 PM

I'm an independent voter who happens to think we should now be celebrating the end of the 2nd term of John McCain (not GWB). It makes me crazy to see how the Republican machine driven by Karl Rove forced him out in 2000. It is extraordinarily gratifying to see that the Limbaugh/Hannity/Savage/Coulter machine are being defeated and can now crawl back under their respective rocks. Because the American people have really spoken and shown that the Rove - type politics no longer work, and that America really desires someone more to the center than either the left or right.

  • Posted By: michaelabbott @ 02/07/2008 4:12:51 PM

Fine talk that all boils down to the last acceptable form of bigotry. Fineman picks an easy target and tramples a good man because he is a Mormon. Lilburn Boggs would have been proud.

  • Posted By: holdingmynose @ 02/07/2008 4:12:07 PM

Your article is more garbage from the Left. You, the media, have manipulated this election and will put into power your evil pawn, McCain.

  • Posted By: 12mailman @ 02/07/2008 4:11:09 PM

Who is this Writer???? He is a total disgrace to journalism. Name one reason why Mitt is not a "decent classy guy"? The flaming liberalism of MSN is so flagrant it is an embarrassment to this organization.
