magic823, nice comment, is Howard Fineman your pen name? Thank you Hmudd67 and wendiewill for your insight. The media put John McCain out there, if you look at the unedited comments through blog after blog, you will see the anger at the current two candidates, John and Mike, and you will see the religious bigotry shown by magic823, sad, truly sad. Magic, there's lots of religious blogs out there for you to attack one of the fastest growing International religions. Romney chose to leave for the good of the party, Mike choose to continue to split the party. As for Mr. Straight Talk Express, I have kept a copy of the robocall I received the day before the California primary with the blantant lies about Mitt Romney and his positions with the ending, I'm John McCain and I approve of this ad. Howard, go back and listen to the last Republican debate and look who was presidential, who was a sour, dour man and who was the guy you want to listen to hunting stories on your tailgate. Mitt in 2012 after the disaster of the current candidates.

Its not the fastest growing religion, either international or national. Seventh-day Adventists and even the JWs are kicking it butt. Even though the "morg" lists 13 million members, it actually has less than 4 million active members. Take Mexico for instance. The morg lists over a million members, but the Mexican censis (where people are asked to self identify their religions) lists only 50K.

Mitt pandered to the right when he thought it would suit his purpose. A man who couldn't get endorsed by the Boston Globe in his home state, where they know him best, is not a viable candidate for president. The highest priced disaster of a highway project happened under his watch (look up the Big Dig) - so much for having a businessman in charge. A project full of corruption, and a commuter's death due to a faulty ceiling panel falling on her car - multiply that by 50 states, and that's a Romney presidency. I was rooting for Huckabee to keep going, just to split the conservative vote and push McCain ahead on delegates. Face facts: the only Republican who stands a chance of defeating a democrate in 08 is one who is moderate and can reach across the aisle. My vote is going to Obama in November, but if the democrats were to lose in 08, I could at least live with a McCain presidency... couldn't have stomached another 4 years of either a phony or a person who doesn't believe in evolution. And speaking of evolution - it was God's own invention, so smarten up and don't consider the bible "literal" truth (it was written by men, not God). Read it as beautiful metaphor on how to live on this troubled earth among men (and that description I got from a Baptist minister.) Love & peace - THINKABOUDIT.

BINGO! You hit the nail on the head, albeit I disagree with your statement regarding Mitt's morminism being a factor, as it was/is really no more of a factor than Billary's gender or Obama's race.
In the "bible belt", Romney received an absolute EQUAL share of votes from those who professed "Evangelical" as their faith. The absolute OPPOSITE was true out West, where those of the LDS movement voted virtually unanimously for Romney, exempting Huckabee & McCain. We call that "reverse discrimination".
Your article is (honestly) one of the most clear assessments and deals with a delicate issue with profound goodness. I hate to say this, but "Well done!".
Now the blind "majority" of the GOP might be able to see more clearly:
    Moderatism/Liberalism = McCain
    Consistent Conservatism = Huckabee
Quite possibly Mitt's withdrawel is what is needed for the GOP to finally rally behind 1 of 2 clearly distinct candidates, making it easier for them.

This had nothing to do with Romney running as something he is not, it had everything to do with what he is, a Mormon. Voters did not look beyond the outward shell of Romney or Huckabee. You show that even you are not concerned with their political character when you call Huckabbe, the genuine article. If people looked beyond the fact that Huckabee was Baptist they would never vote for him based on his policies, and if people looked beyond the fact that Romney was Mormon he would be the Republican nominee.

    • Posted By: Glendoran @ 02/07/2008 2:45:56 PM

He did not lose because he was a Mormon. He lost because he was a bush copy.

      • Posted By: ruthless1 @ 02/07/2008 4:05:43 PM

I believe he lost due to his religion. He would have made a fine President.

    Goodby Mitt-the-Flip!

What he should have told CPAC (if he were honest) is: "My highly-paid staff crunched the numbers, and because true, consistent conservatives in Iowa and in the South didn't obey Rush, Laura, Hannity, Hewitt, Beck and other eastern elites and couldn't ignore my record of flip-flopping on virtually every social issue important to conservatives, I can't win. Therefore, I quit."

Wrong on Ron Paul. He is not running on who he is. If so, we would be talking about his racist, sexist, homophobic anti-semetic,lunatic fringe conspiracy theorist- writings in his old newsletters instead of trying to remake himself to appeal to progressives who would be appalled if they knew the truth.

Sometime ago Judge Judy on Jay Leno said that she voted for a presidential candidate based on good character and whether the candidate was intelligent enough to select smart people as advisors. Not a bad way to select a candidate considering all the negative and positive opinions to which we find ourselves exposed at this time. (It makes me wonder why anyone would run for president.) Most candidates are intelligent enough. However, character flaws abound -- adultery, lying, covering up misdeeds, dirty politicking . . . I found Mr. Romney to have the finest character. Oh, I know he is accused of flip-flopping, negative campaigning, lying, not being genuine . . . and we can't forget he's one of those Mormons. (See article). There was also much negative opinion on his spending much of his own money on his campaign. (I mean, how dare he not squander the money of others on his presidential bid?) Romney has flaws, but in many ways misjudged? A lot of the accusations against him were flawed. In researching Romney's business, personal and public life, there are no skeletons. He's a man that has maintained his integrity in all aspects--a man of good character and intelligent, too--the genuine article! Thank you for running for president Mitt Romney. Any conservative should take the time to listen to his speech suspending the candidacy.

That's interesting, because Huckabee is also running as something he's not - an "evangelical" instead of "crazy religious extremist." Every politician is forced to modify their positions to get elected - and maybe some are nicer than others. At the end of the day, my vote will remain for who would act in the best interest of the nation instead of who is most congenial. Go dores!

  • Posted By: jogirl5 @ 02/07/2008 3:59:12 PM

I'm sorry Romney dropped out. There is no longer anyone I can trust. I will not be voting in this presidential contest, nor will I contribute to anyone's campaign.

BOBURD.......are u of the order of Melchizedek? what of the afterlife? what will u do for all eternity? have u been bathed while naked before other men? who the hell is Moroni? where is he mentioned in the bible? or was he conveniently left out to do bidding for joseph smith? u believe josepf smith? really?

    • Posted By: bobburd @ 02/07/2008 3:58:32 PM

And you would absolutely love to try to deceive people into believing that those things are true, right? Again, some people actually do research on their own and this is where your lies fail. Keep spreading the hate though, it's so good for America. Right?

    • Posted By: ruthless1 @ 02/07/2008 3:54:45 PM

Did you make it to college? You sound like an ignorant fool! You need to get out more and get some integrity!

  • Posted By: iluvmyemok @ 02/07/2008 3:57:53 PM

This is a sad day for conservatives. McCain is not the answer.

  • Posted By: holdingmynose @ 02/07/2008 3:56:49 PM

How is it that a bigot like you has a forum to write your nasty twisted comments? Anyone can see that you are a Mormon hater. Why is hating Mormons so acceptable in a country where we pretend to be so politically correct? I guess we really haven't come so far, have we?

  • Posted By: Dare270 @ 02/07/2008 3:47:57 PM

Anyone who thinks that mitt is good for this country is a complete moron.

    • Posted By: bobburd @ 02/07/2008 3:56:38 PM

Great argument. You've really added a lot to this discussion. I believe this falls into the category I mentioned earlier of all the hateful comments toward Romney coming from apparently uneducated morons.

  • Posted By: disgustedinCA @ 02/07/2008 3:54:57 PM

Interesting to me that if the economy is the number one concern in the US, why did republican voters chose McCain over Romney? All he manages to talk about is the War - winning it - not leaving it. People are definately not thinking with their heads. Also, I find it interesting to note that bigotry is alive and well in the south. So much for you evangelical 'Christians' who don't think that 'your' Jesus has enough grace to save anyone but yourselves.

  • Posted By: citizen123 @ 02/07/2008 2:07:24 PM

The best part of Romney's speech at CPAC was the "booooo-ing" by the entire audience at the mention of John McCain's name!

McCain will lose because he just doesn???t have what it takes to be a real Republican.

    • Posted By: Realist Republican @ 02/07/2008 2:23:58 PM

I think you are confusing the word Republican with conservative.

      • Posted By: maria_dee @ 02/07/2008 3:54:54 PM

        so many confused people...sigh

seriously, I'm a realist republican too, and I want to win in November. Has anyone mentioned that Mitt has the highest unfavorables - among the general electorate - in the Republican ranks?
No it's all about who the "true conservative" is.

Somebody please define that if you will. Rush? OH yeah he was really conservative when he was throwing those Oxys back.

        LOL

  • Posted By: William.Demuth @ 02/07/2008 3:53:08 PM

    Two points

One : The president does not control the economy, the market does. Fiscal and monetary policies can impact things, but when the majority of the electorate are terrified about the future, the president options are limited. Without a reduction in fear, we are in for a rough ride.

Two : Evangelicals who mock Mormonism as a cult should realize that the majority of the people in the world believe that their religion is one as well. I personally believe they are both right.

  • Posted By: alvintree @ 02/07/2008 3:52:53 PM

It is very sad that I am still reading comments talking about whether Mormonism is right or wrong. One thing that this campaign has brought out is the the ugly fact that religious intolerance and bigotry is alive today. Having a black candidate, and a woman running for President was an encouraging sign. But, in reality, we have to accept the fact that we really haven't come very far. Tearing down someone's religion is cowardly, small, rude, and without any dignity. The condescending attitude of Evangelicals in this campaign has been shocking. As if they have the corner on Christianity, and are so unChrist-like in their acceptance of another human being that believes fervently in the Jesus Christ. It is very sad.

The real way to determine authenticity is not to look at how someone appears on TV, or even what they say, or how they say it . . . anyone can talk the talk - but the real way to discern truth and authenticity is by looking at what someone does . . . by looking at the fruit of someone's labors - that's how you tell truth, that's how you tell where the heart of someone lies. Mitt Romney is a class act. He doesn't just talk the talk - he walks the walk. Look at all he's done. When he got authority - he came down on the side of life. Look at his family life - clearly he has all the values that I hold dear. We'll miss you Mitt.

It' a sad day in America. How a narrow minded bigot like you is allowed to write anything the public reads is beyond me. Keep your nasty hatred of Mormons to yourself. No one wants to read it. Unfortunately we are stuck with McCain who represents very few of Conservative Republicans in America. So his Mother was right, we will have to hold our noses. I will wait and watch just how far down this corrupt man takes our country. So sad.

hOWARD FINEMAN calls Mitt Romney a fake and a liar dressed in a costume to fool everyone. What demagogery and hypocritical hyperbole. That's what the left wants us to believe about any opposition to the Democratic liberal lef-wing conspiracy to destroy this country. Newsweek -never!
