I believe Romney quit not because of principle, patriotism, or any other high-minded ideaL. Rather he quit because he was spending himself into the poorhouse. He would have sold his soul to get the nomination but wasn't prepared to pay to buy it back.

Romney is gone for several reasons:
1.) Americans are not going to elect a true conservative this year. Not even if Reagan comes down from the sky in a gold chariot and tells them too.
2.) Bill was slippery, Hill is slippery, GWB was slippery, and Romney was looking pretty damned slippery. Voters are tired of slippery, and are wise to pandering.
3.) Massachusetts is in trouble due to Romney Care.

    Plus:
4.) Gross pandering in Michigan (to the autoworkers)
5.) More pandering in Florida (to Hurricane victims)
6.) A blatant, ridiculous distortion in a campaign ad (on McCain???s taste in judges)
7.) The very long list of embarrassing LDS behavior and beliefs which church officials just can???t seem to keep under the rug. (See Rickross.com, among others)
8.) Running as a "businessman??? has never been very successful.

    To Lety,

Me too...i am all for a Black President or a Woman President. But not a Black muslim-impostor! as is what Barrak Hussein Osama is, or a Woman as divisive as Hillary Clinton. America must at all costs avoid that disgrace:
    - a Black muslim who will betray America or a Woman who is a Republican-hater and admits.
He and She does not deserve to get even near the steps of the White House, let alone inside it.

So, thats my POINT, Miss/Mr. Lety

There will come the time for a TRUE BLACK AMERICAN MAN or WOMAN black or white, to be President of this great Nation. Not the present pretender!

So, GOD save us from this disgrace!

People like you are why misinformation and bigotry exist in this country. I'm sure this note is not going to change your mind...the light of truth cannot shine upon such a closed mind.

Mormonism deserves any and all derision it has coming. Its founder, Joseph Smith, was a con-man convicted for fraud for leading gold-seeking expeditions on Hill Cumorah, NY, the same area he conveniently later found the so-called golden plates using the same or similar "seer-stones" he used in his fraud schemes. Later, Smith turns out to be a pedophile, not unlike David Koresh, and uses his newly minted faith to ensure that he has a steady supply of newly minted converts willing to give up their daughters to him. Not only is Smith easily despised, the book by which the gullible Mormons guide their lives is nothing more than fantasized drivel dreamed up by this despicable rapist and more!

You are quite misinformed, but I do forgive you for such thinking. All you need to do is observe the Christians of the Mormon faith to know that what you are saying is out of context and judgemental. You speak of something you know little or nothing about, except perhaps from those who have elected to write about it using historical text and heresay. Please spend some time with the Saints and read the real story on Mormonism before you say such things that make you look so unintelligent.

You are an idiot Matt S. Oh wait that is why you were started to read this article at all, you and the author are know it all and totally confused pals! This is what was wrong fromteh beginning of Mitt's campain, no one would dare to say these things about Obama (black) or Hillary (woman although that one is still undecided) but it is perfectly OK for all you ignorant Mormon hater who know nothing about the church except what you have read about in your anti-mormon pamphlets that get passed around like candy at many of the countries churches! I bet you not only know a mormon, you respect one, you just don't know that they are Mormon. Grow up and start treating people like they deserve, not because of their color, religious preference or gender but because of thier actions. Mormons are by and far wonderful caring people. Can't say the same about you Matt S.

Mitt figured out he wasting his millions. its all about the benjamins in america. dont u know?

    • Posted By: maria_dee @ 02/07/2008 3:42:27 PM

      absolutely.

If anyone thinks that this shrewd and successful businessman didn't have a predetermined limit to how much of his personal bank he was willing to give up in a bid for the presidency, well, you just need to remove those rose colored glasses.

I am glad to see that in this age of materialism, money can't buy everything. It's good to see that 40 million of your own money can't get you a seat in the oval office.

  • Posted By: Hmudd67 @ 02/07/2008 3:38:28 PM

The reason it failed is because his own party stabbed him the back. In particular McCain & Huckabee the two Biggest hypocrites beside Hillary Clinton in the presidential race.

It's sad to know and have confirmed that religious bigotry is alive and well in this country, both in the mind of the article's writer and so many of you who have commented. If you know nothing about Romney's religion other than what you believe is true or what you've "heard", then you simply don't know anything. Ask a real Mormon what their church is about. They'll tell you the truth. As for the article's premise, this is a desparate attempt to get attention with little truth and a whole lot of biased opinion. I knew there was a reason I didn't like Newsweek. It's unfortunate that they would allow you to write for them. It does nothing for their reputation.

  • Posted By: mmw06 @ 02/07/2008 3:37:05 PM

I am glad to see that in this age of materialism money can't buy everything. Good looks and slick words only carry one so far. Dedication and authenticity are what voters are looking for. One cannot take up the banner of change simply because it makes a nice campaign slogan. 40 million can't cover up the fact that Romney jumped on this mantra because it was working for others...not because he truly believed in it himself.

Mitt Romney made his fortune buying companies, selling off their assets and putting people out of work. It's hard to imagine that anyone in his or her right mind would have considered him for president. What a mess we would be in.

    • Posted By: bobburd @ 02/07/2008 3:33:47 PM

In response to jfecme's comment: Great job parrot! Was that a headline you saw or just another ignorant remark McCain threw into one of his lousy debate performances? Get beyond a 6th grade education before making comments about Mitt's incredible potential to deal with the economy. I think it's interesting to note that on this board, nearly all hateful comments are from the most uneducated people while those supporting Romney seem to be quite articulate with their thoughts. Not a surprise.

To Diena@(it is people like you that makes me mad, I hope that this country elects either a woman or a black president it is about time this country moves to the future. Look at your surrandings I'm sure you see all different people.
I feel sad for you b/c it sounds like you are in constant fear. This great country of ours bless God

    • Posted By: comchris @ 02/07/2008 3:31:45 PM

I sincerely hope that this country will elect the best person to be the President regardless of color, sex or religion. We need new ideas and a new approach. Romney was one of only two candidates who could bring the change, the other being Obama. It's unfortunate that the American people will not have that choice in November. I was glad to see that Romney used his own money for his campaign - cuts down on the special interests that these candidates are typically handcuffed by. Unfortunately, we learned through Romney's campaign, that religious bigotry is thriving

  • Posted By: Nickdor @ 02/07/2008 3:31:07 PM

It's very tempting to over-analyze the demise of Romney's (or anyone elses campaign, for that matter) failed bid for the White House.. In my opinion, much of such lint-picking is meant to show-off the analyst's intellectual agility rather than to convey insight. The essence of Romney's failure to gain so-called "traction" in the primaries is really an inditement of the electorate. We have become so wary of the handsome yet vacuous
spokesperson that we short curciut our ability to make judgments on substantive issues espoused by that person. Does the term "talking-head" ring a bell? What happened to the guy with the $400 haircut? Let's admit that we prefer our candidates and Presidents to look like Lincoln or some guy named McCain.

  • Posted By: Sane in Utah @ 02/07/2008 3:30:26 PM

Well informed article, Howard. I was getting whiplash with Mitt's change in policies on a daily basis. The guy just comes across as a total phony, lacking any integrity at all. He changed each and every policy to match what the crazy right wing wanted (and no, they are not the majority of citizens in this country) and I think a lot of people just weren't comfortable with the constant flip-flopping and pandering. A vote for Mitt would have been Bush Redux and God knows we couldn't take another 4 - 8 years of that!

  • Posted By: Erisian @ 02/07/2008 3:30:06 PM

After his crack about "surrendering to terrorism" Flipper had better hope we never meet. Good riddance to bad garbage.

  • Posted By: mainelover @ 02/07/2008 1:37:42 PM

I think your comments are pretty harsh and its reviews like this that helped to keep him down. And bringing his religion into it is really low. Romney has held many positions in his church and to me his going to the funeral of the leader of his church showed us that some things need to be taken care of and in a humanly nature. If he was involved in his faith and he was Catholic and the pope had died, and he out of respect went to his funeral would you have taken those pop shots at him? I think we lost the one good person who would have turned this country around. So will the gloves come off now between McCain and Huckabee or will the two of them join hands and skip down the yellow brick road together. They both lost my vote a long time ago.

    • Posted By: Cal_Culus @ 02/07/2008 3:27:17 PM

I agree with you big time, mainelover! It isn't just Romney, either . . . it has been this whole process. Journalists such as this one who write this type of an article are abusing their postion of 'trust' to the American public . . . and he certainly isn't the only one. The media has been and still is irresponsible and have the appearance of being manipulative and pretending what we as voters are thinking. They are arrogant and, I believe, irresponsible in their putting forth the facts and keeping their ego and thier bias out of it!

    Janlanpher,
Please Romney's only record is one of raising taxes and being in bed with big business and special interests. He was a fake on gun control, hunting, abortion, and so many other ideas dear to the conservative heart.

Wake up and smell the coffee -- Romney would have been a disaster for America.

It's evident that the writer of this article is completely ignorant and has only stated his sorry personal opinions. Mitt Romney would have taken this country out of a recession. John McCain said in his own words that the economy is not his strong suit. So why in the world is half of Republicans for John McCain. My father, grandfather, and uncles are all war vets but I sure as hell don't think that makes them a viable candidate for President of the United States. Surely, that's not why he is the front runner. He's like 100 years old and doesn't have a clue how to run the country. I'd vote for Hilary over him. Right now, the economy is my biggest issue and it's sad the choices we have left for President of the United States. We lost the one candidate who has any sense whatsoever.

A skewed and inaccurate take on Mitt Romney, an article usually requires real facts and credible opinions. I found the comment about him going to his religious leader???s funeral entirely off base. What about reporting some real issues, for instance, McCain is campaigning today instead of voting on the Economic Stimulus Package.

I realize you were probably rushed in trying to get an article out on time to make a name for yourself, typical of a Washington correspondent riding on the coat tails of greatness. Your entire article, however, is full of holes in logic, void of credible facts and obviously the ranting of a novice. Did you actually write this or simply send the ranting of one of your underlings to print before actually proofreading the article?

By the way, what is Newsweek???s odd negative obsession with Mormons anyway? I find it extremely boring, the same as negative commentary on any religious group. Perhaps it is Newsweek???s ever increasing demographic of those who do not study out issues, are xenophobic and lack proper reasoning skills. I find that Newsweek is a bad corporate citizen and needs to change its image.

Mitt Romney is almost as big a liar as George W. Bush, and he tried to convince us that he is the second coming of Ronald Reagan. Dear God in Heavan, that's the last thing we need!
