I personally admire someone who isn't set in cement and can change for the better. Many of Romney's "flips" are based on stances taken 20 and 30 years ago. The bottom line right now is that he is a very shrewd and intelligent business man with more integrity than he is ever given credit for. He is a perfect example of how religious bigotry, which is the antithesis of true christianity, still runs rampant in this country. Whether I agree with his religion or not, I will always stand with a man who values the foundations of this country over self - love of God, love of country, love of family, and love of his fellow men. I certainly don't see that in the remaining candidates. Hopefully, he will learn from this experience and try again... he would have made a difference.

Mr. Fineman - Give Mitt Romney a break. He just stepped aside. Now you and all the other bigots reporting your false facts can give it a rest and don't tell me that ALL politicians don't "flip-flop" in some way and that includes the "great" McCain. Wake up you genius', this is politics. Mitt Romney failed because of the bigotry that exists in this country and the scrutiny that was placed on him because he IS a mormon. I am glad that the Mitt I know is courageous and strong!

Despite the comments posted previously I agree with this article. Romney is just a Clinton in Republican clothing. Whatever he thought people wanted to hear is what he said. I've personally been waiting for him to drop out and am very glad that it has finally happened. He would have been a disaster as a president, and, had he received the nomination, would have ensured a democratic victory in November.

As to his being an economic saviour for the country; this is the guy who spent millions only to lose state after state, and in some cases to a candidate on a shoestring budget. I personally think Mr. Huckabee is running the most economical campaign, getting his message out without having to spend millions. But that is because he really is genuine, as, I believe, is Mr. McCain I guess Romney was hoping to buy the election. I'm glad that the American people have shown that they are interested more in a genuine candidate than in a large wallet with empty promises.

Romney and his advisors made the mistake of pandering to right wing Christian conservative zealotry, which does not represent the Republican majority. Although the media refers to this minority as the "base" of the party, it is not. True party values involve economics, not social wedge issues which, unfortunately, have taken over. Most people are worried about being able to survive financially, not whether gay people can get married and whether a woman can get an abortion. Let Huckabee represent that divisive minority. Even McCain, a lifelong Episcopalian, has proclaimed himself a Baptist. during this campaign. Whether a person is a Mormon or a Muslim, it should not make a difference, as long as religion does not preclude politics.

Its all about the money for the Republican establishment. The moral issues never mattered to Rush or Hanedy or even Romey. They want business folks in charge or dumbies like Bush they can manipulate. Too bad you guys got nobody like that now. I can't see McClain, Paul or Huckebee being esay to manipulate but I don't think they'd make very good presidents either.

I voted for Romney as governor of Massachusetts, even though I'm a Democrat, because the Dem, Shannon O'Brien, was a classic pro-abortion knee-jerk and a mental lightweight to boot, and Mass. needs a sane fiscal mind to keep the patronage-rotted state government, including the Legislature, under some kind of control. What got me was his backstabbing my native state, and basically ditching it. So ironically, he was a decent fiscal leader, but ended up just chasing his windmill. I'll never forgive him for turning the state he was elected to lead, into his traveling punch line. Good riddance to Romney.

Mitt Romney is almost as big a liar as George W. Bush, and he tried to convince us that he was the second coming of Ronald Reagan. Dear God in Heaven, that is the last thing we need!

This article is a joke. Calling McCain and Huckabee as the "genuine article" and the total ignoring of the flip floping that McCain does is ridiculous. And why is it that the main media is ignoring the although legal but hardly ethical giving away or selling of the delegate from Huckabee to McCain in an expressed effort to run off Romney!. They are both disgusting men who will ruin this country. McCain may have been a war hero, but he is nothing but an bitter foul traderious old man now! People need to look at his record, most of his votes were against his own party! He is a closet democrat!!!!
As far as Romney being a flip flopper, Romney said he would uphold the laws when he was gov of mass. He never said he believed these things (gay marriage and abortion) to be correct.
Romney being a Mormon was why people hated him so much. It was disgusting how it was made an issue by everyone and especially Huckabee! As if his religion is so great!!? And you can be nasty about Mormons but why is no one speaking about McCains age!!!!!!! He is 80 years old. He may be in good health for his age, but loo at any president's pictures from when he takes office to when he leaves, the office ages them. If he is elected or selected to be the parties rep. we had all better hope for an amazing Vice President because McCain will probably die in office or become unhealthy to the point that the vice president will take over! Hey, maybe there is hope!!
Also, did anyone else note that McCain did NOT vote on the up coming Stimulus package,
where again Democrats want to give a tax rebate check to illegal aliens!!
Lets consider why McCain would choose to skip voting on such an important issue,
(Especially since his "rivals" Obama and Clinton made a point of voting! Believe in this package or not, he is a member of congress and should have taken a stand on what he wants for this issue!)
So... if he voted, he might actually have had to back up his claim to be a conservative and vote with his party,
OR he if he voted like he usually does, against them,
people (voters) might really start looking at his record and start to ask questions! Like "why he consistantly votes against his own party and against what his parties base, (conservatives) really believe in!!"
Pretty scary that the choices have dwindled down down to Obama, Hillary and McCain for our next president! I have read more blogs today that say they (conservative republicans) will not vote if it comes down to McCain as the parties nomination! I will vote but it will be a write in for Romney!
I really hope that God will Bless America because we are all going to need his help with any of these three in office!!

Whatever it takes to get a Democrat in the White House and rid ourselves of the current moron occupant must be done. Granted, Romney was willing to shape himself into whatever fascists like Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter and other fellow-travelers would like; however, John (We may be in Iraq for 100 years) McCain is much worse. This is a guy who will follow in the footsteps of Dubya, who hasn't a clue about the ecomony and admits it and will keep us on the same failed path for the next few years. The only thing he has going for him is that he can speak English unlike the current president. I'm pulling for Obama but electing another republican especially one of the clueless conservative kind will mean another disasterous four years. Thats' the last thing we need.

I don't understand how you can refer to Mitt Romney as somebody who has flipped his position to make himself more palatable for conservatives, when John McCain is the master of this. He proclaims himself as the conservative choice when his record shows that he is anything but. And to refer to Romney as somebody who is willing to do anything to win and to ignore McCain's actions in West Virginia is just ignorant.

To Matt S---what dribble...My goodness, get a life and do some actual research on your own rather than the nonsense you read in some anti-mormon pamphlet, was told to you from a mormon basher or you read in an anti-mormon web site. GEEZ--this is what I mean, people are just plain ignorant like good, ole boy Matt!--Bet you voted for your boy, Mike H, huh? LOL---ignorant and a bigot, go figure.

By losing Romney, we lost the only true LEADER we had in the party. HIs record of leadership was incredible. Every job, every task Romney has ever undertaken resulted in success story after success story. Where are McCains success stories - that he survived the war?? We need more in a president than the arrogant McCain. I am a die hard republican that will now vote for Obama.

Wow. I didn't know attending a funeral of an honorable man was a faux pas. Religious or not, any respectable person could nod to Romney for putting his campaign on hold at a critical time. Damned if you do...damned if you don't.

  • Posted By: Lexi98248 @ 02/07/2008 3:14:59 PM

Your article is unbeliveable! Romney lost the race because the media like you! The media called him a flip-flopper. I never heard one statement of the queen of flip flop Hillary Clinton. Even John McCane who was for amnosty and then against for illegals. For abortion rights then against. Oh but he was "your guy" and "the real deal". You guys are the ones who made the Mormon issue a big deal. Harry Reid is an active Mormon but how many people know that? Not many because he is your "real deal" also. You had to make the Mormon issue an issue. Here is a Church that stands for family, God, love your neighbor, service for your neighbor, take care of your body, I guess those are issues you forgot to mention. I have watched this election with discust because of the media. Now you have the nerve to spit on the grave of a man who stands for something that maybe the country could use right now. I just hope you get the same in return!!!!

It's evident that the guy that wrote this article is not a fan of Mitt. It's also terribly sad the choices we have left in the Presidential Primary. Romney would have pulled us out of a recession. McCain has admitted the economy is not one of his strong areas. And we have half of Republicans backing this guy? I agree with Limbaugh that he has stabbed his own party in the back. I would vote for Hilary over John McCain. The man is like 100 years old and the people voting for him don't know who this guy is.

  • Posted By: janlanpher @ 02/07/2008 3:12:47 PM

You are an idiot. By losing Romney, the republicans just lost the only qualified leader we had.

  • Posted By: lana p emerson @ 02/07/2008 3:12:00 PM

romney is a class act, i guess you must have some recgonize true class. to bad for you mr. fineman

  • Posted By: Robbissimo @ 02/07/2008 3:10:48 PM

This is all so much garbage. The media had it out for Romney aas did the anti-Mormon bigots. Huckabee only stuck it out to act as spoiler for Romney, since heaven forbid we had a Mormon in the White House to siphon off any more Baptist converts, since no conservative in their right mind would have voted for McCain. So the Republican party can sleep in the bed they made and I look forward to watching the Democrats make them wash the sheets after they wet them in November. The loss they'll experience in this presidential election will be no less embarrassing, regardless if it's Clinton or Obama.
