Huckabee is the only conservative that has never swayed. His ideas are fresh, exciting and he has proven that he is the most experienced in running a government. He is gracefull under pressure and it is a testimony of his fiscal skills to run this campaign on a shoe string budget and beat Romney so badly.

Romney spent 650k per delegate and Huckabee spent 45k.

I pray Huckabee is our next president!

Fact check! Hucky didn't beat Romney...check the numbers again he was in third place. The only reason he is still in the race is he's hoping for a V.P. job!

Pray your little heart out but don't be surprised when you get HILLARY!!!

    This article makes no argument.
    a. A course of reasoning aimed at demonstrating truth or falsehood: presented a careful argument for extraterrestrial life.
    b. A fact or statement put forth as proof or evidence; a reason: The current low mortgage rates are an argument for buying a house now.
    c. A set of statements in which one follows logically as a conclusion from the others.

Anyone who thinks of himself so highly as to think he can simply write off someone as visibly and publicly successful as Mitt Romney has been throughout his career as "phony" is not only a deceiver of himself but undeserving of even the slightest respect of even a pundit. You sir, not only don't contribute anything worthwhile, you are only a sniper. Your mother should be ashamed.

YOU SAID EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED TO SAY...WELL DONE!

From the first day I began following this candidate, every press story mentioned two drawbacks , his religion and his changing on issues. This was their all out frontal attack. When someone said he was making too much of the Mormon problem, I googled and founmd 200,000 citations. Now fineman is trying to cover his tracks, because he and his associates created these myths.

I can't believe how Howard can be so wrong. Often I disagree with his stands, but this is just short of stupid. Unfortunately the American public doesn't necessarily elect "nice guys" and that may have been Romney's downfall...not being "cut-throat". We have lost our best hope in 2008 for sanity in the election. I'm afraid to read future Fineman columns based on the totally wrong take of this one.

Au Contraire. One of Romneys shortcoming was that he was a nice guy trying cut throat tactics. It was just plain uncofortable to watch. For some reason, he half-heartedly used negative ads and talk radio to undermine his opponents. In the end he even publicly embraced talk radio (something George Bush did not even do). These tactics bode well for Karl Rove and George Bush. But times are different. The credibility of talk radio has moved downward toward where it belongs, and negative ads have lost its flavor.

Romney was behind his time when he attempted 2004 tactics. Obviously his advisors told him that negative ads work. It backfired, plain and simple.

I disagree with the idea that Romney's religion was a factor all of its own. Morris Udall ran for president in 1976, yet many people still don't realize he was the first serious Mormon presidential candidate. Where Udall and Romney differed, however, was in the phoniness that Mr. Fineman cites here. Romney wanted to paint himself as something he was not--an evangelical Christian--when again, Huckabee is the real deal.

johnnylawless: don't offend me or other non-mormons living in Utah who voted for Mitt Romney. Only 65% of the the state is mormon. The rest of us are of different faiths and maybe we like what we see in Mitt Romney. So, alot of people voted for him inspite of his religion. 2nd you are ill informed if you don't remember that he lived in Utah for 3 years digging the Olympics out of a mess. So he has connections here other than just his religion.

The entire GOP seems to be sef-destructing. Ann Couter is now a "Hillary-girl" bcause she believes the reincarnation of Reagan in the form of Mitt Romney (perhaps) will take power in four years. How pathetic! The GOP has gone off the deep end. Will the party splinter into pieces come Minneapolis?!

The conservative talkies couldn't wear Hillary's jock strap. Conservatives are what happens to people that are not athletic, geeks, socialites or heads. Those boring people talked to themselves for so long they became good at it. Earning money to lie and tear down Americans just because they are not bigoted is a mystery to me.

I wholeheartedly disagree with Fineman. I believe that rather than Romney portraying himself as something other than he was, we now see him clearly for what he really is...a True Conservative...that is someone who wants to keep things exactly how they are...with him and his friends that make up the monied oligarchy on top, while stymieing the advancement of those less fortunate or weaker than the position into which he was born. He is actually cruel and callous, just like our current president. All the remaining candidates would be a better president than him. Huckabee, McCain, Clinton and Obama are all more in touch with the common American than Romney is. At the beginning of the campaign I knew very little about him; now I'm totally repulsed. Thank you Super Tuesday voters!

Mr. Fineman, you are fooling yourself and attempting to fool your readers by stating that Mike Huckabee is "clear about who [he is]". Gov. Huckabee is running as the "true conservatitve" in this race. The truth is that he is at best a populist and at worst only ran because he is an anti-Mormon bigot who could not countenace the thought of a Mormon president.

  • Posted By: Daleesp @ 02/07/2008 10:51:33 PM

Romney lost because he is like many "conservatives". He uses his own interpretation of the truth and uses money and media to twist information??? the ignorant followers cannot reason away these lies. Mitt was pro-choice, backed anti-gun laws, and raised government fees (a tax of sorts). However is appears as a conservative savior.
These conservatives have laid their tax burden on the future generations and are so pompous as to say they fight for the unborn. Conservatives fight for the unborn because they need them to pay the taxes that conservatives are ducking.
Money is not everything and a growing intellectually inclined youth are going to put the conservatives in the history books??? just like other intolerant peoples of history.
America, if you don???t like it??? change it. GO DEMOCRATS!!! I am tired of having Atlas rip me off without any means of my obtaining justice.

"Burying Fineman" A couple more pathetic articles like this and poor ,sad ,jealous ,Howard will be burying himself. The difference is that everyone will remember Mitt Romney when he passes on and when Howard goes "south" they will say "Howard, who"

  • Posted By: seattlepainter @ 02/07/2008 10:30:33 PM

I was really struck by just how accurate this article was. Mitt Romney changed his positions so many times that by the end of his campaign, you didn't know where he stood any longer. When he ran for governor in Massachusetts, he was a moderate, pro-choice candidate. When he ran for president, all of a sudden he was pro-life (and on and on and on). In short, here was a candidate who would say and do anything to get elected. People hate phonies and that is the reason why John McCain is on the verge of winning the Republican nomination.

  • Posted By: Goku @ 02/07/2008 10:22:11 PM

Fineman this is one of the most pathetic, bias, left leaning articles I have had read since yesterday. You have been in the tank for John McCain for years because he is one of the few Republicans who you could count on to undermine the conservative agenda. Your simply mad at Mitt because you believed he has gone over to the dark side of the force. Stop being so obviously liberal. If he had been a conservative who had become more liberal you would be calling him enlightened and evolved. Quite frankly, I can't wait to see how you turn on McCain once he gets the nomination. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Today, in your view, McCain is an enlightened politician who has refused to compromise his principals, tomorrow you will be calling him a right wing war fanatic who is to old and out of touch.

    Cons3rvative-
"I pray Huckabee is our next president!"

You have just illustrated how Huckabee could get away with spending so little for his delegate support. All of the exit polls from every state where Huckabee has won those delegates has indicated that Huckabee's support is almost entirely comprised of Evangelical voters. When did you ever see Romney enter a church to spread his message? When did you ever see him raise the topic of religion? Sure he had to address it and even defend his, but he never raised the issue. Huckabee's political tour of churches calls two things into question: the tax-exempt status of those churches for hosting partisan politicking and Governor Huckabee's commitment to the separation of church and state.

    • Posted By: mrtuttle @ 02/07/2008 8:51:39 PM

"Only a Christian would vote for Huckabee" is a code phrase for those anti-Christian bigots who are trying scare non-Christians into not voting for Huckabee.

      • Posted By: PMcAllister @ 02/07/2008 10:15:44 PM

If, as a Christian myself, I can see that Governor Huckabee's strategy all along has been to court the Evangelical vote because he has not received sufficient support in the form of financial donations, then I guarantee that the non-Christian or anti-Christian voters out there have seen it too.

I am not trying to convince anyone not to vote for Governor Huckabee, only responding to the posting by "Cons3ervative" that indicated how much more efficient Governor Huckabee was than Governor Romney, investing 10 times less per delegate won. You can't dispute that Governor Huckabee has pandered to the Evangelicals and has asked for and received a great deal of volunteer support from them.

Fineman is pathetic. Posting a video, such as the 'This Romney Guy, I Guess', that tries to discredit a candidate by making fun of the statements of a child is irresponsible to journalism.
