While I believe that religion did play a roll in the downfall of Mitt Romney, the real reason that McCain is ahead is that he is truly a candidate with the experience and ability to lead. He is more middle of the road then some want but he knows the issues and he knows how to compromise and work internationally and with Congress to tackle the issues this country has before it. I do not agree with his views on every issue, especially the war in Iraq, yet I do believe he has the capability to bring it to a close if he can unite our congress to accomplilsh what has to be done. It would be nice if the press would concentrate on the issues in this country and not who raises the most money, who has the most money, what relgion someone espouses to and what the dumb polls say. Give us substance not fluff. We need to elect a leader, not a personality

Enter Your Commentof the pary my a**. Give me a brak. Romney dropped out for two reasons. 1) Because he didn't stand a chance of becoming the nominee and: 2) because he didn't want to spend anymore of his own money.

He didn't get the votes because he is a a) WHINER, b) had no record to run on, which is why he constantly avoided answering direct questions and continually attacked every other candidate running, both Republican and Democrat.

Romeny is a ex-CEO/CFO and his concern is $$$$. Making and keeping as much as possible. Position, ego and arrogance. Romeny has no idea what the needs of regular people voters are and his rhetoric abouot how he can relate to the average guy on the street is nauseating, as are the other Republicans in the race..

John McCain will be the nominee and the Republican party will back him, no matter how mcuh they mouth off against him, because that is just the way they are. No morals, no convictions, no interst in truth. Bigots, homophobes, racists, anti-women's choice, pro war, etc. If John McCain should unfrotunately be elected the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq will never end, which is exactly what he is hoping for. Think about the innocent Americans and others across the globe who will lose their lives, be mentally or phsically disable for life if these wars continue. McCain is as guilty of being a war monger as Bush and McCain is still living as if in the Vietnam era. He is a very dangerous man.

As for Mormons, I've associated with many many during my life. Sure there are some who don't live fully by its tenets, but most I've known are good, hard working, family loving, sincere people who strive to do good things and stay away from the crap of the world. They also don't spend their time trashing on evangelicals or anyone else for that matter. The evangelicals I've known seem to spend all of their time trashing mormons especially and everyone else who doesn't believe the way they do. Sure the mormon missionaries are everywhere, but from what I've seen they don't dis on other's religions. They focus on teaching their own beliefs. Seems like evangelicals' time could be better spent trying to live Christ-like lives rather than wasting negative energy trashing on all other religions.

Okay listen, or read through the comments here........most say that he made mistakes. Don't we all. If you read the comments not many if any are on his issues........the comments made are directed to the LDS churgh and his religion. Those of you that state that he was not judged on his religion just need to read these comments to realize that is the main issue for most voters. Also the aid that was given to hurricane, tsunami and other victims was not for the most part monetary, the church sends millions of humanitarian kits that contains personal comforts, everything from Blankets to toothpaste to help victims of disasters. I personally have put together kits fot these and many other areas that benefit from this humanitary service. Also if you were to truly put time into investigation you would find that the LDS church was the first to respond to the hurricane victims in Louisiana. Yes I am proud of what Mitt Represents, perhaps the nation in not ready for a honest, true, responsible Person to guide it.

Bingo --- this article nailed it for me.

This is exactly what the folks I know say about Romney and how I feel about him: he has no soul, no core.

Mormons look beyond this because above all else Mormons stick together -- I live in Utah, I know.

They are wonderful folks but for them, they make it about Religion. For the rest of us, it is more about Romney and his sense of integrity and genuineness.

Zigzig is right drake77...i've been a memeber of the LDS faith my entire life and becomeing a God is pretty much our purpose for everything. We were sent here to recieve a body and be tested and if we prove to be faithful, we will one day become perfect, even as God is perfect. We will one day be Gods and Goddesses...so maybe you should attend church every no and then and understand the doctrine of the church. P.S. even though a country shouldn't vote for a candidate depending on their religion, the country just did...how unAmerican is that?

Political opportunism and Mormon opportunism to further their cause (avow plural marriage as necessary for godhood, then disavow plural marriage on earth, while avowing it for the next life by "sealing" more than one woman to surviving men for eternity; denying Blacks the priesthood, then allowing blacks into the priesthood; avow the necessity of "blood atonement" for the salvation of those who have shed blood, then
disavow "blood atonement;" avow that men may become gods, then disavow knowledge of such a doctrine.) Connect the dots. Romney's political opportunism is cut from the whole cloth of his commitment to his
    Mormon faith and roots.

    Evangelical scholars

    Wow, there's an oxymoron!

n3naicc Siad: "The Catholic Church and many other Christian Churches have given millions of dollars in aid to hurricane victims , etc."

Now if we can get them to practice what they preach, rather then preaching to everyone else on what they should be practicing... And while they're at it, leave the alter boys alone for god sakes...

Some rich guys go climb Everest, some buy tropical islands, others buy huge Montana ranches--Romney tried to buy the presidency. America saw right through this phoney and sent him packing......

He failed because he wanted it too badly so he sabotaged himself, saying what he thought most of us wanted to hear, focussing strictly on making the grade and losing his authenticity in the process. On the issue of immigration he was dead wrong. You can't send 12 million illegal immigrants to the back of the line in their countries - you might as well kill them - that's why they are here to begin with, they have no future in their countries. McCain emerged as the more human and authentic candidate. If Romney is really that rigid, he needs to change big time and realize that we can't lose our humanity turning against the illegal immigrants now when we allowed this monster to happen to begin with because it was convenient to do so at the time. We are all guilty in this matter, from the top to the bottom, so now we should deal with the problem and make them citizens. How are we going to send them to their countries? Revive the gestapo and go door to door, have concentration camps? That would be the only way and that's what I would like to ask Romney.

As usual, Mr. Romney made the expedient calcualation...this time with the correct outcome...he's out. An empty suit...and plastic to the end. I'm certain that 4 years from now, he'll calculate the prevailing wind and adjust what he believes and says. The only thing bigger than his ambition is his shallowness. Good riddance...for now...

One down, two to go. It's time to face facts - Americans don't want republicans. We took Congress from them for a reason, and now it's time to take the presidency too. With the dollar only a penny behind Canada, it's time for "regime change" right here at home. We're also not a Theocracy, so a candidate's religion should NEVER be part of their campaign.

Race isn't an issue; gender isn't an issue; religion isn't an issue. The issues are the economy, health care, the war on terror, abortion, gun control, education, and taxes. Trying to make an issue out of something that isn't is a hallmark of every news organization who needs to sell stories. And, oh, by the way; the primaries aren't over. I still intend to make my vote count. I am voting for Huckabee.

Religion, schmriligion - what's that got to do with being president? If we were voting for a Catholic Bishop, yes, I'd hold the Mormonism against him. I'd as soon see an atheist in the white house as a Christian, Buddhist, Jew, etc. What we need now is an authentic secular leader ... Lisa is right - it wasn't religion that sank the campaign - it was people's perception of Romney as a manufactured (not authentic) article. One good thing about atheist/agnostic president would be that they see this earthly world as the one in which we "have to get it right" - the idea of a person who looks forward to the rapture being president is comparable to putting a suicidal captain in charge of a cruise ship. Somehow, a Mormon isn't quite as scary as an evangelical rapture believer.

Elise: He's out of the campaign. Stop the spinning. You sound like you aren't sure he's really gone and want to put in one last nail.

""Once again, Romney was seen as pandering to win votes and not talking about the truths in his heart." Are you kidding?? "My faith is the faith of my fathers. I will be true to them and to my beliefs. Some believe that such a confession of my faith will sink my candidacy. If they're right, so be it." What truths of his heart are you looking for, and what other candidate would you require such a confession of faith?

"As a candidate, Romney's greatest weakness was that he looked as if winning was the one thing he really believed in all along." Really? Allow me to quote it again: "Some believe that such a confession of my faith will sink my candidacy. If they're right, so be it."

Before you spin your next story, you should make sure you don't quote extensively from material that undermines your point.

I've never understood why his religion was an issue. He was the best candidate running. The reason he didn't connect with more voters, is because many voters did not educate themselves on where the candidates stood on issues. If more conservatives had, McCain would not be the front runner. Also, most people already knew who John McCain was before he entered the race.

"Will history say that in 2008, the year that America showed itself to be enthusiastically ready for a black or female president, it still wasn't ready for a Mormon?"
--Instead of looking at physical appearance and religion, we need to look at the candidates' records. Romney beats every cadidate by miles, in business and government.

I have never understood what his religion had to do with anything. He was the best candidate. I'm not sure who to vote for now.
