You forgot the best tip of all if one is thinking of getting a tattoo; DON'T. Most people believe there is little risk but tattoo parlors are like any other medical facility; Full of germs, bacteria and virus. Unfortunalely the the control efforts are soetimes slack resulting in opportunities for serious infections. Tattoos are an unnecessary "surgery" so why take a risk?

I have a tattoo on my upper back right below my shoulder, the only time it hert was when it hit bone. The rest of the tattoo went fine, just felt weird.

Okay...I had to finally respond to this article. It appears to me if most of the people bagging on everybody who has tattoos lack intelligemce, maturity, and experience. The best advice for all the "tattoo junkies' out there is to refuse to have a battle of witts with an unarmed person.
My husband has numerous tattoos. He is currently working a full sleeve. His tattoos are well thought out and planned, and he takes great pride in them. There is only one tattoo that he regrets and it one that he got right out of high school and has since had covered up.
I, on the other hand, waited until I was 26 to even think about getting a tattoo. I thought on one that I like for a while, and finally had it done. I did have it put in a place where I can hide it if I choose, or show it off to the world, if I like. I have never had any regrets on it, and in fact, have went and had more detail added to it, and am contemplating another one.
We are both intelligent, educated individuals who work with the public on a daily basis. We have raised smart, well-mannered, kind and caring children who get to know people before they judge them.
As for the stereo types that people keep writing about for people with tattoos, I have found that to be the exception and not the rule. Sure, there are white trash people out there with tattoos but there is just as many white trash people living next to us all who do not have any tattoos. Socio-economic status, race, religion, and age have nothing to do with who has tattoos and who does not. My husbands friends, with the majority having tattoos, are all kind, non-judgemental, and would do anything for anybody.
As for the pain, which is what the article was about......it was not the most pleasant thing that I have experienced (people are putting a needle with ink in it, into your skin :) but it was not the bad either. It was definately not as bad as the people who were trying to talk me out of it said that it would be.

This is completely wrong. By far, Ribs are the #1 painful spot. 90% of tattoo artists will say this.
This survey might be confusing 'irritation' with 'pain'...

I agree with you. I have a chest piece from shoulder to shoulder all the way down onto my sternum and that was by far the worst pain ive ever felt. I cant believe they would put random places like eyes on the list and not consider more practical places that are hella painful.

I too am a business women working in the executive world with 2 tattoos, one is so large on my back that it literally covers half of it, and the other is located on my hip. My boss has seen mine as well and appreciates the time and effort I put in to choosing something that meant something to me rather than some silly cartoon character. I think the judgement that was placed on that 18 yr old was far more harsh than needed. Believe it or not I got my first one at 19 and I'm now 25 making probably more than 50k a year, so its you who should re-evaluate your thinking cause trust me, us tattooed young execs are coming in to the work world fast and we're brushing way past you sir. And hey some of those truckers make a hefty penny (possibly even more than you) so think before you speak and put others down.

WOW revtann - must have been expensive to do all that! Congrats on living your life! I hope you have a high-paying job that allows you to "live your life" and that you don't have to work 2 or maybe 3 jobs to pay for all that "living". To each his/her own, I guess..... For me; however, living life is swinging in a hammock on a lazy summer's day or seeing each of the 7 wonders of the world.... Enjoy living!

    Tiny Toons,

I look at that poor child below, and I think about my son. She???s not much bigger than him. Unfortunately, she and her family members had the gross misfortune of living in a country that is rich in oil deposits. The leader of that country tried to bring that oil to market to pay for his war debts, and 150,000+ Iraqis have died. 4,000+ Americans have died. 6,000+ service members have deserted. Tens of thousands of veterans have been maimed and psychologically scarred. The Iraqi people have lost control of their national treasure, so that they couldn???t compete with OPEC oil, AND EXXON-MOBILE JUST REPORTED $117 BILLION in FOURTH QUARTER PROFITS. I wonder how well BP is doing?

Since 9/11, no one in the Bush administration has been fired, impeached, demoted, nada. Thousands of people have been locked-up???not to get intel on al Qaeda, but to keep them from discussing how the CIA through the Pakistani Intelligence Services funded and trained them. Less than 10 people have been convicted of anything related to 9/11.

While ???Joe Bag-of-donuts??? is facing recession, foreclosure, and possibly bankruptcy, the NEO-CONs are lining their friends??? pockets to the tune of $609 Billion. In October 2007, the Congressional Budget Office projected that war costs for the next 10 years ight total an additional $570 billion if troop levels fell to 30,000 by 2010, or $1.1 trillion if troop levels fell to 75,000 by about 2013. Under these illustrative scenarios, CBO projects hat funding for Iraq, Afghanistan and the GWOT
could reach from about $1.2 trillion and $1.7 trillion for FY2001-FY2017.

By the way, some of the 9/11 hijackers received their visas at the US embassy in Saudi Arabia. Terrorists don???t cross freakin??? burnin??? Arizona desert land nor do they swim putrid rivers. They are well educated, highly skilled, well funded, and in some cases CIA-highly-trained operatives. Didn???t your representatives tell you? Seen it on the news? Oh yeah, that???s right, the war profiteers sit on the board of directors for media conglomerates and vice versa. If you had seen the 4000 coffins coming home, and the 4000 funerals, you might have decided to end this war. The war profiteers learned their lessons well during the Viet Nam conflict. The excuse given to you is that al-Qaeda will exploit the footage. Al-Qaeda can???t stop this war! ONLY YOU CAN!

The American Civil War was fought and won in less time! We defeated the Germans during WWI is less time! We defeated Hitler and Tojo in less time!

The Constitution has been damn near eviscerated just to fight a few thousand renegades that travel through the mountains on mules and horses. They travel overseas in cars, buses, trains, and planes. Are you sheep being led to the slaughter house? Our government knows what Al-qaeda???s capabilities are. Our government has been training and funding them for a few decades. YOU ARE THE ENEMY! Think about it! Habeas Corpus has been suspended! Did you know that?

Why is your government passing so much legislation to gather intelligence on you? Have you perused the USA Patriot Act? Why are DC citizens??? right to bear arms going before the Supreme Court? The Constitution plainly states that no law may infringe upon that right. God gave us our rights. Not our Government. We the people created a government IN ORDER TO FORM A MORE PERFECT UNION, ESTABLISH JUSTICE, ENJOY DOMESTIC TRANQUILITY, PROVIDE FOR THE COMMON DEFENSE, PROMOTE THE GENERAL WELFARE, AND SECURE THE BLESSINGS OF LIBERTY TO OURSELVES AND OUR POSTERITY

The founding fathers knew that an armed citizenry must be able to defend itself FROM ITS OWN GOVERNMENT. Right now there is a bill before the Indiana House to require every round of ammunition for semi-automatic weapons be serialized. All un-serialized ammo must be disposed of by 2011. Why? The criminals are going to make their own ammo, steal some ammo, or buy it on the black market. This bill is supposed to be beneficial to law enforcement efforts when investigating gun-related crimes. From a military perspective, if I pull up to Joe Bag-of-donuts??? house, I???m a cop, and I have access to info concerning all of his registered weapons, and every round of ammunition he has purchased, that???s excellent intel! It???s called an enemy order of battle, folks. So, when I breach his property without a search warrant nor probable cause (USA Patriot Act), I know what I???m up against. Maybe, when his RFID drivers license is swiped at his job as he enters the building, that info gets forwarded to my superiors, and I can take his weapons before he gets home. If his wife is a stay-at-home mom who pays for her NRA membership via credit card, I must be prepared to take her down too.

    Comment: Jewel:

Let's be honest here...you would probably do a lot better with me than the partner you currently have. I take it by your comment that even though you think you hate me, I did get you to smile at my comment. that is good. What a mouth you have though...do you talk like that around guys? they can't find that very endearing and when you get out of the joint, if you have any hope of snagging me, you are going to have to clean your act up somewhat.

Seriously guy... You strike me as a condesending Mr Rogers....

You are probably pretty close with that assessment. I need to work on being less judgmental.

Look, I don???t even own a gun though the navy taught me how to shoot several different types. My point is this???you and I have a higher chance of being struck by lightning than being killed by a terrorist. We have a much higher chance of living into our seventies and dying of cancer than being murdered. So, tell me why are our elected officials screwing around with your and my freedom? Benjamin Franklin said, ???Any society that would give up liberty to gain security will deserve neither and lose both.??? James Madison said, ???If Tyranny and oppression come to this land, it will be in the disguise of fighting a foreign enemy.??? These men were so very smart! How many pillars of the Communist Manifesto have our federal government already implemented? You do realize that Karl Marx was inspired by Plato???s Republic? These issues are being discussed in plain sight, but your TV keeps you distracted. Talk radio keeps you distracted! Why is Heath Ledger???s death front page press for days, but you can???t get a daily update on the war dead from the same sources? You may be like that 400lb lion in the circus. The lion has the massive power to be free. His 175lb ???trainer??? points the chair???s four legs at the lion, and the lion can???t make up his mind what to attack because he???s befuddled with too many targets (distractions). Meanwhile, the trainer keeps cracking the whip making that lion dance.

Didn???t Mesopotamia lay the groundwork for civilization? Do people from that region have a history of constitutional republics? Why are we trying to install political systems from the barrel of a gun? Those people have history that stretches back thousands of years! Who are we to tell them how to govern themselves? I think they know what they???re doing. The Palestinians held a democratic election, and Hamas was victorious in winning a majority of seats in their legislature. Bush refused to recognize them. Why? The wrong people won! Pervez Musharaf is a Class A tyrant, does Bush care? Heck no! Pervez is a key player in the war against you???I mean war on terror.

Check out what Nobel prize winning economist Milton Friedman taught concerning Shock Doctrine. Naomi Kline provides a nice summary and several examples in her so named book.

Iran has been considered a state sponsor of terrorism. Did you know that Iran is rich with uranium deposits? What does it take to make a dirty bomb? TNT, C4, or some other high explosive, and uranium. No nuclear detonation required???just wind, alpha and beta particles. If Iran is such a threat, why haven???t they put a dirty bomb in any terrorists??? hands?

Don???t believe the hype about Iranian gunboats either! Talk to any sailor who has transited the Straits of Hormuz, and she will tell you that at any given time one???s ship is either in Iranian, Omanian, or UAE territorial waters. For decades, the Iranians have always sent gunboats out to identify who???s in transit. Have you seen nature shows when cape buffalo swat flies with their tails? That???s what a navy warship would do to an Iranian gun boat. We know it, and they do too. The fight would be over in 30 seconds! Didn???t Admiral James Bond Stockdale teach us the truth about the Gulf of Tonkin incident? The difference back then was that there weren???t ANY gunboats, patrol boats, nor torpedo boats underway when that lie was reported to President Johnson. Yet, we sent hundreds of thousands of troops to Viet Nam. Didn???t Nixon say he was going to bring our troops home with honor? That???s McCain and Huckabee???s new mantra. Nixon kept us in Nam for another seven years and expanded our operations in Laos and Cambodia. Now the ???Chicken Hawks??? are trying to sell a ???Gulf of Oman??? incident. Iran is the turd in the swimming pool. The Saudi sunnis don???t want the Iranian Shias to grow in power and influence over Iraqi oil. The Saudis have been funding the Bush Family network for more than 30 years. Do you think the Saudis are now callin??? in favors? You know they are! They want access to that Iraqi oil worse than the Iranians do. Some estimate that they own 7% or more of the US economy. That???s about $910 Billion. Do you think that buys them influence in the oval office? You know it does! Their fair share of congressional representation would be about 37 politicians. Use your common sense. Who???s fighting and dying to protect their interests? Does your family have any skin in this game? God help them! Have you noticed that our presidents never define what ???American interests??? are? I???ll bet you dollars to donuts that the American corporations who are outsourcing jobs overseas know what American interests are. Just read the commodities companies??? annual reports, and pres releases.

And As for them all looking alike....It is true that as tattoos become more mainstream, many people will go in and pick them out of a book like a million others have before, but it is their choice. BUT there are also millions of people who have designed original tattoos, and have beautiful ones that are full of special meaning to them.
For all the anti-tattoers out there. You have your opinions and nobodyy will change that. But people with tattoos aren't hurting you. it's not like you have to go get one becuase I have one. It's a choice, and thats what is so great about this country. I have the freedom to choose. If you think that tattoos are disgusting...DON"T LOOK!!! If you think that some girl looks trashy because of her tattoo...WALK AWAY!!! Let some other lucky man take the chance to get to know her for who she actually is...She would probably be better in the long run, anyways. But don't judge someone until you have walked a mile in their shoes. Keep an open mind because close-mindedness is the most unattractive quality of any individual.

I currently have 4 tattoos ....the tattoo that cause me the most pain ( and i shed a few tears )was my dragon which is located on my left side .on top of my ribs , Starting from right under my breast to just above my hip bone.. Everyone else (the back of my neck ,shoulder blade, and side of my leg between my calf muscle and shin ) felt like annoying bee stings! I love tattoos and even if you do get ones that you didn't think over you can always cover them up with one that you did think through. I know only one of my tattoos was planned , everything else was spur of the moment and i dont regret a thing.

3 mos ago, two-time former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto said Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh killed Osama. You can find the interview on You Tube and English Al Jazeera (Frost on the World). Bhutto said the prior assassination attempt on her life financed by Pakistani gov't officials (Lt Gen Mahmood Ahmad, former Director of the Pakistani ISI). Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh paid more than $100k to Mohamed Atta for the ISI from CIA coffers. Omar was a Pakistani Brit student when recruited. Omar hijacked an Indian airplane. Omar was British MI-6. Omar beheaded several tourists. Omar killed journalist Daniel Pearl for investigating ISI and al-Qaeda. Bhutto was killed for letting the cat out the bag that Osama is dead. She had to be eliminated. Congress will pay the Pakistani gov't a $10 Billion re-imbursement for War on Terror expenses. WHY? Is that why you pay taxes? In the late 1980???s, Butto warned former CIA Director come President George H.W. Bush, ???You are creating a Frankenstein.??? (referring to the mujahedeen network???yeah the group that helped give birth to al-Qaeda). She was ignored.

If no Osama...no war...no war profits...no Anglo-American hegemony in the middle east...no war with Iran...no need for USA Patriot Act...no need for RFID National ID...the list goes on. $ Trillions are at stake! Your freedom is at stake!

Forget about political parties. Who's taking a stance to defend the constitution?

Name the only presidential candidate who doesn't belong to the Bilderberg Group, Council on Foreign Relations, nor Trilateral Commission. What are the stated goals of these organizations?

Sound crazy? Do your own research. You will find yourself reviewing the Revelation of St. John before it's all over.

I hope you think I???m a nut. Do your own research, before your children wake up with an RFID chip implanted in their heads just so they can vote. ???As Institute attorneys point out, photo IDs often contain far more information than that necessary to comply with voting requirements. For example, the Indiana driver???s license contains the address of the holder, information about the holder???s height and weight and the holder???s driver???s license number. Some older licenses also contain the holder???s Social Security number. And as the brief makes clear, anything that reduces the privacy of voting undermines both voter confidence and the integrity of the process.

The Institute???s brief also argues that Indiana???s photo ID requirement, if upheld, could open the door for states to require Real IDs as the only acceptable form of voter identification. Real IDs, in particular, pose a greater risk of abuse, as the biometric data contained on the cards could one day be obtained when the voter uses it to vote. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit decided in January 2007 to uphold the Indiana law. For purposes of review, Crawford v. Marion County Election Bd. was consolidated with Indiana Democratic Party v.

i AM 44 AND GOT MY FIRST TATTOO AT 35. i NOW HAVE 6. MY MOTHER WAS MORE UPSET ABOUT ME PIERCING MY NOSE TWO YEARS AGO THAN ABOUT MY TATTOOS. I TRIED TO TELL HER THAT I COULD ALWAYS TAKE OUT MY STUD IN MY NOSE AND IT WOULD CLOSE UP BUT THAT THE TATS WERE THERE TO STAY. I AM NOT ASHAMED ABOUT ANY OF MY TATS OR MY PIERCINGS.

  • Posted By: nonfiction1 @ 02/08/2008 9:31:51 AM

I got my tattoos when I was under 21 years old. I've hated them ever since! Not that they are anything off the wall. I just don't like having tattoos. Also I thought I might mention that any tattoos on a girl is a big turn-off to me. A few of my friends told me the same thing. I would warn people that should already know. These things are permanent! DUH!

    • Posted By: baylee333 @ 02/08/2008 4:16:28 PM

As a woman I love my tattoo. I thought very seriously for two years about what I wanted and were I wanted it and never in those two years did I wonder if some stupid man (or anyone else for that matter) was going to like it. Maybe the real problem is jumping on the fad ban wagon with all your buddies NOT tattoos.

    • Posted By: lauraine 266 @ 02/08/2008 12:49:21 PM

dear nonfiction1: sounds like you got yours to be cool without really thinking about it. let me guess- a kanji or two and some crappy tribal thing. nice choice. any girls wiht tattoos probably think yours are pathetic and wouldnot be interested in you anyway.
before you get your first piece, sound advice is to pick your art and think anout it for a year. after that if you still love it, go for it. if it's something you really want that is meaningful, the pain wont be an issue. simply put, fashion tatoos seem to hurt a lot more than real well-don, thought out artisitic pieces. i am a woman with two half sleeves and a few others. never have i worried that a guy would love me until he saw my skin. if what others think is a factor, then dont get any ink. and why does everyone worry about what it will look like when they are 70? you'd be surprised how many people that age have ink, women included.

  • Posted By: inkest @ 02/08/2008 4:16:22 PM

For the AZZHOLE saying women are trashy for having Tattoos, What makes you so special and able to say that? I have more then a few and plan to get more Mine revolve around my life and my chidren. My Kids love them everybody that sees them loves them. They are all in good taste and nothing down grading or distastful. We are not trash nor sluts due to our art work People become that due to the choices they make in life you Dumb F*ck. You work at Burger King? Your just p*ssed you cant afford them and girls can handle the pain that you can't You SISSY AZZ. You probally live in the rusted traier park. Give it a rest !!!
