I would have to disagree about the "top of the foot" being one of the most painful places! i have one on my foot and it didn't hurt when they did it at all.. the worst place for me was my hip and my lower back..

I'm a 23 year old tattooing and piercing apprentice- I've been at it for almost 2 years now and I've seen a lot of different tattoos. No matter if its a full back or sleeve piece or something as silly as an electrical socket on someone's back (yes ive seen this and I still refer to her as 'glade') the point of tattoos is supposed to be self expression. There is an exchange of pain for the beauty of permanent art and I think that's what's so appealing about tattoos.

Hey Wiz, a penny for your thoughts would be a waste of money.

I have a butterfly tattoo on top of my right foot and another tattoo on my left shoulderblade. The tattoo on my foot hurt way less than the other so I think the amount of pain depends on the person. I have been judged by people when they see my tattoos, but that is their problem not mine. Most people love my tattoos and ask all types of questions. I have found it is mostly the closed minded "religious" type who are offended. Note I did not say Christian ! I am a Christian and proud of it and my tattoos both mean something personal to me. Yes, I do intend to get more. This is my way to "showing" people my life and of reminding me of triumph over tradegy. Thanks ya'll !

Ok, tattoos have been around since the beginning of time for all cultures. It's a way of self expression, indivdualism and can even tell a story. I'm a 30 year old mother of 3. I own my own investment company, I do land acquisition and I'm a developer here in Phoenix and i'm building in San Diego, and i've done it on my own. I've also spent about 15 hours in the chair getting my tattoos. I am very professional, business minded, successful along with down to earth. I am very proud and confident of who I am and so are my kids. To hear that people with Tattoos are trashy, disgusting, common, and every other disillusioned term is very ignorant. Tattood people are every day people. I've never been turned down in business, or for business cause someone looks down and see's the top of my tattood foot, or sees the color through my shirt. In fact, it's been the opposite. The top of my right foot is covered, my lower back, my shoulder and across by back and down my shoulder blade are tattood. I've experienced very fine things in life and so have my kids. Tell the people that have lossed a loved one that they are trashy or don't have class because they have a portrait in rememberance, or the woman that had a breast removed and replaced it with something beautiful that she is disgusting; the men and women fighting or have fought for our country that have placed something to remind them of the time, or even someone like myself who has put evey bad memory, my rap, my loss and turned it into something that keeps me grounded and reminds me of where i came from and that everything bad can be a lesson and turned into something beautiful and something to be proud of. The people who are being judgmental are the real ones at a loss; you are the ones missing out on some of the most amazing wonderful people whom you most likely talk to everyday and don't even realize it. It's easy to sit at a computer personally attacking people; in which you probably do things that other people don't agree with that could be considered trashy, offencive, and disgusting. It's just that you feel that voicing your unintelligent opinions will make a difference. It doesn't, no one cares if you like tattoos, or not. I'm not saying run out and get one, but at least take time to think before you speak. You are the ones that are truly missing out on great people and are closed minded to classify people on who they are because of a tattoo. Your ignorant comments shows who you are as an individules and your character. Maybe that should be thought about before you attack others of whom you don't know. You never know when you may need to eat your words. To those who have ink... see you at the convention that is coming!! To all... have a great day.

I suspect some of your ink has seeped into your brain. Your spend on a $120k a year is excessive. Perhaps people with tattoos are not trashing, but you are evidence that they are foolish.

Comment: People that have tattoos are trashy?? What a dumba$$. By no means am I bragging but I make over $120K a year. I have a $600K house with two kids, wife, and a dog. The American Dream right? Oh my wife is a stay at home Mom who drives a Lexus and I drive a benz. I also have two full arms full of tattoos. Tattoos are the finer things in life to some of us. I know one thing, they sure cost more than your stupid glass of wine.

Santiago - he said he MAKES over $120k a year...he doesn't say anything about spending.

      • Posted By: amberb @ 02/08/2008 2:24:17 PM

except for the part about the $600K house and the Lexus and the Benz, right?

        • Posted By: Panteragirl78 @ 02/08/2008 2:58:59 PM

I guess I should have added after spending "on tattoos". I just assumed people who read would understand based on the original comment.

    • Posted By: sunkissed @ 02/08/2008 1:58:07 PM

Comment: To KnuckleDragger or was that Smucker? Do NOT speak of evil. I think morticians wear plastic gloves now adays.

Hey pal I call it like I see it. KnuckleDragger.... lol... I smell a feminist... Oops oh yeah. Pal would be politically incorrect for "Gal". Listen lady, your dark crack about death was evil and hateful. Therefore, seeing that you and your ideals share a common thread (the only thing holding your ears together...) YOU = EVIL

I have my lips and eyelids tatooed. I disagree about the lips being one of the five most painful places. It didn't hurt a bit, there is a lot of skin there too. My eyelids however, hurt like hell. Not so sure I would ever do that again. My lips I would do again in a heartbeat, all I need is the money. Permanent make up is not cheap

I don't believe that people with tattoos have anything to prove, cannot/should not be compared--even in cynicism--to AIDs, 'addiction' to pot, or any other social plagues. Should an employer choose to reject me because of my tattoos, that's very fair. But if someone doesn't take the care to cover them in a conservative business environment, that is their own fault. Anyone who regrets a tattoo didn't think theirs out well enough and anyone who treats tattooed people differently is closed-minded.

Hey, Klee1 if you work at a church why are you being so judgemental? People who live in trailor parks don't go to church?

Imagine a woman getting a tattoo on one of her boobs of a nice rose. When she's 80 it'll be a foot long and she'll have to lift her dress to look at it. Or why not get a tattoo on your Johnson that says "Love Lifted Me"? Personally, I don't care for tattoo's but if thats what you like, hey, go to it! I once knew a preacher that had left and right over his boobs and underneath 'em he had "white" and "chocolate."

To itsakat; my perversions you speak of are GOD-Giving to every male. Where does your line form?

    • Posted By: itsakat @ 02/08/2008 2:54:04 PM

wiz -- don't confuse being a male with being a man. my line forms in front of me -- & you wouldn't do well to try to cross it.

  • Posted By: birtmr @ 02/08/2008 2:53:58 PM

To me, the act of the actual tattooing (sp) felt like a cross of being electricuted (like when you get shocked plugging in an appliance) and being burned ( hot burning like a semi bad sunburn) Neither of the two I have bled or scabbed over. One on my right breast was the most painful I think cause it was the first. The second on my right outer calf is of two long tailed hummingbirds, one blue one pink , one goes up, one goes down with tails entertwined. The represent my kids. They are addictive, trying to figure what and how to incoorporate my Grandson!!!

I am a SAHM with two tattoos and a pierced tongue. I'm not low class, I'm not trashy, I don't live in a trailer park. I am a strong Christian and attened church regularly. People from ANY religion, background, any social "class" any profession, no matter how "professional" it may or may not be, have tattoos. They and other forms of body art are a personal choice. Don't assume you know the person that has a tattoo, just because they have art on their back.

  • Posted By: RyuKojo @ 02/08/2008 2:53:31 PM

I worked in a tattoo shop for about a year and I'm apprenticing with a friend of mine. I have seen many tattoos done- everything from beautiful full back and sleeve pieces to something as silly as a re-do of an electrical socket on a girl's lower back (to this day I still refer to her as 'glade"). Obviously different kinds of people like different kinds of art, but no matter what you're getting the pain is universal. In my opinion thats what makes getting a tattoo such a popular form of self expression- you're experiencing pain in exchange for something beautiful and that will (hopefully) be with you for the rest of your life.

Tattoos are permant folks. Take your time in deciding what you really want, many people get them and decide weeks or months later they hate it. I have only 1 Tattoo it took me years to decide what I wanted knowing that I was going to take it with me to my grave. My Tattoo is on the back of my neck and it is the neatest set of green eyes you would ever see on a Tattoo. People get Tattoos as a form of art on many occasions such as remembrence of a death, birth, military, love or a specific meaning. As far as the pain I had none it was rather erotic. However peoples tolerance to pain is different. Oh and I must add this JUSSY
I guess I am a REDNECK!!!! And I am proud of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Posted By: bikerbi333 @ 02/08/2008 2:51:59 PM

I disagree on the lips, I have my lips and my eyelids done with permanent make up. I also have other tatoo's on different places of my body. My eyelids were the most painful by far, and the least was my lips, there may be a lot of nerves, but there is a lot of skin too. I would get them done again anytime providing I had the money.

Getting a tattoo is a personal decision and there are usually reasons associated with them to that said person. It has nothing to do with self-esteem issues. Most tattoos are very dear to a persons heart (as they should be, I mean, it is permanent). If you don't want or like tattoos, that's fine, to each their own, and if you like them or have them, that's fine too. It's a matter of personal preference, so it shouldn't matter if someone likes you or dislikes you because of your tattoos or lack thereof. But if you write off a person because they are heavily tattooed, without ever getting to know them, it shows how close-minded and judgemental you are, and isn't that what the United States of America is trying to get over? (see: UNITED)
