I have a tattoo behind my ear and it didn't hurt in the least. I think the pain has more to do with the time it takes to get the piece done. The tattoo I have on my shoulder hurt a lot, but it also took nearly 3 hours to complete. The first hour was fine, the last 45 minutes hurt like hell. The pain doesn't really start to kick in until your adrenaline runs out.

If you're skinny, getting a tat on your hipbone will hurt as well! I have one on the front of my right hipbone.

I am a soccer mom and I keep my skin clean...no tats. I on the other had don't see a problem with people getting tattoos. One of my favorite shows is LA Ink. If someone choices to have tottoos then they should. It is their body. My husband is so dang sexy with his tats that I can't keep my hands off of him. I would rather see them on someone else then on me but I will always think that certain people look sexy with them. They are just no for me.

I got my tattoo when I was 18 (30 years ago) ... 2 things I have to say, thank goodness I was smart enough to put it some place that most people won't ever see (unless I'm in a bathing suit or naked, it's below the waist), and thank goodness it has become very popular over the years...after my oldest entered her young teens, it became embarrassing for her to have the only mom that had one. I even had one little girl (about 5 y.o.) ask me why I color on myself. Again, thanks to the popularity of them...I no longer feel embarrassed or ashamed...but I would never do it again. Sorry people, but sagging skin from the sun & aging are going to make for an awful lot of people looking mighty pitiful in a few years. I've always told my now grown daughters, to never ever make the mistake I did.

I am fortunate enough to be a stay-at -home mom of 3. All my kids love my ink and when they're 18 if they want one, I'll go with them. I have been very picky about what I've gotten and where, and all of them stand for something or someone. I was thinking well enough ahead that when I got an iris on my breast at 22 I knew it would "grow". Now, at 36. I just have a long stemmed flower!

I like it when people make comments like tattoos are here to stay like that somehow validates them. I agree, tattoos are here to stay, so are bad grammar, AIDS and a host of other things, it sure doesn't make them good though.
Tattoos are a matter of personal taste and if someone doesn't like them, it their choice, same way others embrace them.
Now if you have a ton of tattoos and I chose not to give you a job, it still falls within the realm of personal choice.

Yeah, you're right, the top of the foot with all those veins and thin skin hurt like hell..I had 3 snakes - dad, mom and baby put on there..was supposed to go back for a touch-up but couldn't stand the hurt. More recently, with all memory of tatt pain gone, had my inner - base of lashes, inside lids, eyelids done in Thailand....now that takes the biscuit and probably my top most painful place to get a tattoo. Pain and discomfort aside, never having to apply eyeliner again is a huge plus !

what's with all this verbal abuse? If you don't like tattoos then don't get one. Tattoos are an expression of one's self and despite whether you like them or not, people aren't going to stop getting them.

get over yourself and your suffocating intellect.

I always assumed that tattoos were just dangerous to get (dirty, needles, etc)., which is why I have never gotten one. Am I incorrect in my thinking on this?

    • Posted By: geezer @ 02/08/2008 2:43:25 PM

Hey katman---tattoos are not dangerous to get unless you get some person who calls himself or herself a tattoo artist but in reality is nothing but an unsanitary and uncaring pig. If you decide to get a tattoo, do some research first on the artist in question and make sure his or her shop and equipment is up to local health codes. If you are satisfied he or she meets with your approva, then i would say go ahead and get a tattoo , i think you will find that 99% of all tattoo artist`s are unscruplously clean and sanitary.--geezer.l

Completely incorrect. have you ever been inside a tattoo shop?! Needles are sterilized in an autoclave, preserved in sterile wrapping, the area getting tattooed is swabbed clean, the chair you'll be sitting, hell the whole area is disinfected before you even sit down! And tattoo artists will wear gloves, not just to protect you, but to protect themselves from dirty customers coming in. Serious, reputable tattoo artists and shop owners take customer safety issues extremely seriously. it's nut jobs who decide to come in when they have colds, the flu, herpes, etc. who give the industry a bad name. if you're sick or have something contagious don't even think of coming into my shop!

Maybe not so much incorrect because there are still a lot of places out there that are unsafe. But the majority of tattoo and piercing parlors are extremely clean - no needle or ink is used on more than one person.

Always go to a reputable artist, you will know one by doing word of mouth research. Also, when you go to the studio, common sense will tell you if the place is well-lit, clean, and how the artist prepares you and their instruments will also be your guide. I have gone to the same artist for my tattoos and never had an issue.

if God had wanted you in different colors, he would have made blue and green people. My son has some, but he has been in his own world anyway.

What's up with all the verbal abuse. People aren't going to stop getting tattoos just because you don't like them. I agree that something like a huge butterfly on the lower back isn't exactly spiritual to most of the world, but who's to say it doesn't mean something to the people who get that sort of tattoo.

get over yourself and your suffocating intellect.

I had a tattoo done about 2 years ago on the very top center of my foot. I won't lie about it, but it did hurt like a mother but I do get a lot of comments on it, and do get asked that famous question" Did it hurt?" I was hesitant of getting one done on the top of my foot, but the idea of having one done on that area nagged at me until I finally went into see my tattoo artist that has done all my tattoos and told him what I wanted. It did take a little longer than my other 6 tattoos, not to mention my finger that I had done.
I have had the back of my leg done on the calf, and it tickled more than it hurt, my tattoo artist was actually getting kinda mad because I couldn't stop laughing, but he understood me and my humour and realized that it wasn't the reaction that he was expecting to see, and he was and still is very supportive on my choices.
I am now getting ready to go in to get a tat done behind my ear.
My 2 favorite ones are my arm bands that was designed with my kids names wrapped all the way around my arms, and my grandparents memorial, which is going across my upper back.
Getting a tattoo is a huge choice to get, it's kind of like playing Russian Rollette, once you get "Inked" it's permanent!!!! Yeah you might decide to have it removed by laser, but why go through all that you have gone through just to get it done and the money you invested in it, just to go through another uncomfortable procedure of having it removed....and that's not involving the money it would cost to have it done removed.

I have three on my foot and it really wasn't that bad. My migraines are much more painful. I guess it all depends on your tolerance.

Migraines -- amen! So was childbirth (have an only child & several tattoos -- lol!!!)

I have 11 tattoos, 5 of which I designed myself, and 3 more of which I worked with the artist at designing. From my own personal experience, what is stated in the is NOT always true???so PLEASE keep the following in mind when considering a tattoo. According to the article, having tattoos in locations such as the thigh are the least painful of locations to get them, yet I happen to have a tattoo on the outside of my thigh (a tribal dragon piece I designed), and this was the most painful of all my tattoos, including the two on the inside of my right ankle, as well as the tattoo on my back. As for that tattoo on my back, it is located just below the base of the neck, centered on my spine???easily one of those locations that ???should??? be among the most painful, yet having the tattoo done there was so relaxing, I, quite literally, almost fell asleep while receiving it.

Basically, what I???m trying to get at is this ??? location does NOT necessarily have to do with the amount of pain involved in getting a tattoo. For a very large number of people, while location might possibly play a part in the level of pain involved, to a greater extent, the amount of pain someone is affected by has more to do with their pain threshold in any specific location. Using myself, as well as many others, as a perfect example, some of us have higher than normal pain thresholds in areas of the body that most others would find painful to some degree, while, to us, there is no pain at all???and (possibly) on other areas of the body, where other people might notice little, or no, pain at all, we might notice a considerable amount, and possibly more. The main point I???m trying to make here is this ??? everyone IS different, and what the article says about these particular five areas being the most painful is NOT always the case, so, if you are interested in getting a tattoo, consider your OWN pain thresholds in the various areas of your body, and decide where you want your tattoos to be, not based on some article telling you where pain happens, but where you know pain to exist on your OWN body.
