I have a tattoo on my second toe on my right foot and let me tell you what - it was a good thing I was allowed to drink after it was started!!!! I also have a goldfish on my left breast, people always ask if it hurt well no it's all fat!!!! I also have my son & daughters names on my back between my angel bones (in my own handwriting I might add!) this hurt but nowhere new what the toe did!!!! Love my tats.

I am 19-years-old and became 'addicted' to tattoos as soon as I was able to get one. My siblings and I were raised that we would severly if we ever had the nerve to get a tattoo. Then, when my brother turned 18 and went off to Marine bootcamp, my mother---the threatening one--got a tattoo on the back of her shoulder with a yellow rose and "Marine Mom" written on it. My dad is still not crazy about them, but supports us. My first point being, unless you are very artistically influenced and into expressing yourself artistically, then you probably will never like tattoos.
Now others are saying that tattoos on women are tacky. I have clovers--one on each side of my chest--representing how meaningful my heritage is to me. It draws a lot of attention, but most people love the idea and know they don't have the guts to put something like that out there. I have a side piece that takes up my whole side and a large one going across my lower back. They all mean a lot to me, and I believe as long as you think them out and they mean a lot to you, people should hold their tongues and think about if they might be offending you by making it seem like something that is so special to you should be hidden.

    Comment: to knucklesswitch:

Why do find it so hard to believe that poeple that get more than one tattoo have an angry issues. I have two, my husban has just one-but it is large and it happens to be Grime Reaper. We are both normal people with No Anger Issues. We are taking our daughter and our niece in for their first tattoos.
You need to gain a better prespective, dump your out dated ideas of people. I got my first tattoo -cause my grandfather had two. The Queen of Hearts and the Ace of Spades-he was 85 when I git my first one-he was so proud that I did this. Thanks for your comment, but next time keep it to yourself

Good grief Taterpoof..... Read before you speak....

Comment: i am not putting people down who have tattoos. however, as a general rule, a guy with LOTS of
tattoos has an anger or ego problem, or both. i do not seem to notice the problem with women.

rgb.... Red, Green, Blue.... hmmmm.. I wouldn't think that someone with such a colorful name, could only think in black and white.. I think you missed the headline from earlier... "People with tats have high self-esteem". So, maybe the ego thing is a misinterpretation of one's abundance of esteem. As for the anger issue.... I'd be pretty angry too, if you kept classifying me as egotistical and one of the "Guys". Sorry but I'm not one of your ex-boyfriends.

The most attactive look Ive seen lately is a man approx. 62 years old, mostly bald, with a pony tail, a cheap funny looking earring and a "cool" tat on his leg! Cool!

I think tattoos are AWESOME! I have 6 and the one that hurt the most was on my big toe. I was suppose to get it touched up 2 weeks after but I never went back to do it. The others are on both ankles,my chest ;) and the small of my back (trampstamp) that DID NOT hurt at all. ( I actually fell asleep while she did the 1 on my back) . I wouldnt change any of them for anything. I got all 6 of them to represent certain periods of my life and very much looking forward to the 7th. My husband has 3 and is looking forward to his 4th. People do need to realize that tattoos are here to stay , so all the "old fashioned" folks need to get over it =)
My 17 yr old stepdaughter cant wait until shes 18 to get her first and me and my husband will be right there beside her just as we were when we had her belly button pierced at 15 and her nose pierced at 17.

I am 25 years old and wanted to get a tattoo since I was 18. I never did because I was a bit skeptical and couldn???t see me with one. It wasn???t until I was in Hawaii on vacation a couple weeks back; I found this great tribal design and decided to go for it. I absolutely love it and I became addicted. After that was finished I had another one done immediately; a Chinese phrase that means no fear, fear no one...I put that on the same arm but vertically on the tricep. I just had another tribal (I have always like tribal tats) put on my left arm Tuesday night of this week. You can only see a little bit of it come past the sleeve on t-shirts, but for the most part they are concealed. I wish I would have gotten them sooner! I also have a college education and work in an office environment. I am a purchasing manager for a manufacturing company and regularly meet with vendors and customers; I'm still the same person I always was. Tattoos are an expression. To me they are also special because of the pain you endure while getting them; a kind of rite. People can have their opinion, that???s freedom, but I have to laugh at the comments regarding mental issues in people having three or more tattoos. I guess I am clinically insane now. DUMBASSES.

Who cares? So what? Wait and see how grandmom and grandad look on the beach in 30 years. "Granmom? Who's Snake?"

Why is it that people with tattoos NEVER gripe about how a person without ink looks, but people with out ink are always griping about how we look. I've always felt this way about it- "If you don't like how I look, THEN DON'T LOOK AT ME!"

      • Posted By: JustMyOpinion123 @ 02/08/2008 1:11:40 PM

Because people without tattoos don't look cheap and disgusting?

        • Posted By: Badu @ 02/08/2008 2:34:47 PM

How interesting? Was that all you could come up with? I have 3 tattos, all which are very small, delicate, and hold a significant meaning to me (one in honor of my only grandparent...my grandmother b/c my other grandparents were deceased before I was born). Thus, all of them are invisible to the human eye.....meaning, nobody knows they are there. I got all of my tattoos for me, not to show off to the world. I am a grown woman with a bachelor's and master's degree. I have a very positive outlook on life, a great attiude and an extremly high self-esteem. I was taught as a young child that if you don't have anything nice to say, then do not say anything at all. Yes, you have a right to voice your opinion, but you could have achieved it by doing so with tact. My recommendation is that you take a look at the person in the mirror and ask yourself what your real issue might be. For future reference, do not be so quick to judge or degrade an individual just because they are not like you. Who are you? And what makes you better than someone else? Everyone has flaws whether born with them, due to an injury/accident, or by their own free will. Tattoos are an art form, favored by many, liked by some, and disliked by others, but it is a choice. For example, some peolpe choose to smoke, drink, curse like a sailor, gamble and the list goes on and on. Some people are bothered by these behaviors and others are not, but again it comes down to an individuals desire to do so. I personally retract your statement saying that people with tattoos are cheap and disgusting and those without tattos are not. Tthe next time someone you know (family member, neighbor, friend, co-worker), or a complete stranger for that matter makes a comment about you, or critizes you, take a deep breath and think about the fact that you were quick to do the same to others. With that said, knowing that there are people like you in the world, I will continue to make it my business to pray for world peace so that all the HATRED and direct disregard of others can eventually be removed from the world we live in! ~Peace & Blessings!~

Your name says it all. Just Your Opinion. We don't look cheap and disgusting, thats just your perception. Bigotry and unwarranted hatred makes a person far more disgusting than a bit of ink ever could.

        • Posted By: bluegyrrl @ 02/08/2008 1:54:31 PM

        • Posted By: emvdancer @ 02/08/2008 1:48:09 PM

That is not completely true either. People can go back and forth all day about what they think about body ink. The fact still remains that there will always be some person out there looking for a way to express themselves, whether it be the clothes they wear, jewelry, body ink, etc. I would think that people would have a better way of spending their time than putting other people down for the choices that they make. It is their life and that is what they chose to do. The ones who have no class are those that are trying so hard to prove that they are better than another just because they don't agree with something a person did. Just goes to show you that people as a whole will never grow up.

    • Posted By: beenthere @ 02/08/2008 2:04:06 PM

What this really means is that you're very afraid of what people think of your own looks. Most people who get tattoos are confident enough not to worry about the opinions of every other person out there. If Grandmom has a tattoo that people can see at the beach, she's a pretty confident lady, and not at all concerned that some grump doesn't like her ink!

    • Posted By: Damish @ 02/08/2008 1:09:58 PM

Has anyone ever wondered wht inked people NEVER gripe about people not having tattoos, but people without ink gripe about those of us who do. Here's my motto-"If you don't like how I look, THEN DON'T LOOK AT ME!"

  • Posted By: WhiteDove56 @ 02/08/2008 1:40:15 PM

I am too chicken to get a tattoo, but I am fascinated by them. I have seem some amazing artwork on people.
what I want to know, is it ok for me to ask someone about their tattoos? I have this curious side of me that always wants to know what things mean, blah, blah. Plus, I always seem to want to touch them!! what the heck is wrong with me?
Anyways, for the most part i dont find them offensive, unless of course they were meant to be offensive!!

    • Posted By: msmuffet @ 02/08/2008 2:34:36 PM

Most of us with tattoos are all too happy to share, so ask away!

    • Posted By: lacy_d123 @ 02/08/2008 2:03:49 PM

My son kept trying to rub mine off after I got it. He was 2, so he didn't get the idea that its permanent - esp when he gets the temporary ones.

WHITEDAVE56 MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE MULTIPUL TATOOS EACH. I FIND HIM STOPPING ME ON A REGULAR BASIS WHEN OUT BECAUSE HE NOTICES SOMEOME TRYING TO LOOK AT MINE AND I KEEP MOVING AROUND. They're really not that bad as long as you relax... if you walk in thinking it's going to hurt, it will. Still most of the peeps I tattoo say it's not even that bad... You'll be fine, just make sure it's something that has meaning to you!

    • Posted By: javamom @ 02/08/2008 1:47:15 PM

I ask people about their tats all the time. Especially when i see a particularly amazing piece of art. I have never had anyone be offended by my questions. I did have a woman ask me why i would "do that to myself" once, and i found that to be offensive due to the tone of voice, but i calmly explained to her why I did it. She was much more pleasant after that.

    • Posted By: beenthere @ 02/08/2008 1:46:01 PM

Most tattooed people I know don't mind being asked about their tattoos, and if they are sensitive about them, they can always just smile and change the subject. One of mine has quite a story to it, and since it's on a place where people can see, I end up being asked about it a lot. I've never minded answering!

    • Posted By: LisaAnn @ 02/08/2008 1:45:22 PM

I have 3 tat's and scheduled for a 4th. All have personal meaning for me, and while I can not speak for all who sport tat's, I for one would not mind at all being asked about mine or their meaning. As for the touching part, you're not going to feel anything but regular feeling skin, once they are healed.

wiz -- sounds like YOU have an issue & tattoos probably aren't the only thing that catalyze your perversion.

Tattoos have been around a lot longer than just the Navy -- they've been part of other cultures for centuries -- millinnea, even. They tell stories, they hold personal meaning, they inspire, they remind, they are statements, they are art. All of those things & more, tattoos speak of one's personal life experiences & perspecitves. If you don't like them, simply don't read the book. But, why risk sounding uneducated yourself because you have no reality on which to base your poorly formed opinions?
Unless one is truly an all naturalist -- no make-up, no hair cuts, no dyes, no perfumes, no deodorants, no shaving, no clothing of unnatural sources, no phone, no lights, no motorcar... your points are rendered completely invalid before you even make a feeble attempt at forming one,.

I have Many Tattoos. Both feet are done, my ankle, my wrist, behind my ears, my shin which connects to the one on top of my foot. One right on the back part of my neck but none of these hurt. I have to say though that the one that went over my Achiles hurt It felt like it was being cut apart. As for the other places I think that my wrist and the one behind my ear was the easiest.

I see no point in the negative remarks some people are making about people with tattoos are "trashy", have "low self-esteem" and so-on. What do you have to say to all the celebrities out there sporting the permanent artwork? I suppose they are just as pathetic in your mind. I am the secretary of a very large Catholic church and have 6 tattoos (none of which are small scale); 5 of them are plainly visible. Never, not one time has anyone, including the priests, made a negative or derogatory comment about them. If anything, they are curious, fascinated and admire the fine artwork. That goes to prove that I spent a tremendous amount of time selecting my tattoos and yes, they tell a story. It's a personal experience and if you haven't had that experience then you should educate yourself on the subject before you get diarrhea of the mouth. Until then, please do the rest of us a favor and go back into the cave to live miserably ever after.

I have 4 tattoos all of which i do not regret. 1 is located on my outer ankle and 1 is located on the inner ankle. I also have 2 on my back. The only one I had any pain with is the one in the "Meaty" part of my lower back. i enjoy seeing the different pieces of art people display on their bodies. I have never had anyone belittle me b/c of my tattoos and don't feel like anyone should judge anyone for wanting to display a walking form of art.

I had to join in on this one....I got my first tattoo at 40. I waited until I really knew what I wanted. Since then I have added four more. (Back of my neck, both ankles and the top of both my feet - total). Each one represents something important to me and I am PROUD to have them all. I am a professional and due to the unfortunate judgments of SOME others in my business, have gotten mine in places that may be covered. My kids think it is so cool and my oldest actually got her nose pierced when I got one of my tatts. When my kids say that they want one, the only advice I give them is to wait until you REALLY know what you want. Yes, they can be added to at any time, but the main art should be something meaningful. I found it also was a real bonding experience between my artist and the friends or family that have gone with me for mine. My artist can freehand my thoughts with such accuracy, it is truly amazing. The pain of the actual process is quickly forgotten and ink is definitely addicting. To each his own, right?

Whipskie: henna tattos are safe--I've had a couple with absolutely no problem. I have read, though, that some henna artists advertise "black henna" which is actually toxic and can cause bad reactions with burned and rashed skin. The regular tan-staining henna is what you should look for.

    • Posted By: Whipskie @ 02/08/2008 2:30:48 PM

How long do they generally last?

  • Posted By: GotInk73 @ 02/08/2008 2:29:41 PM

Tatt's are very addicting... and the feeling, your already planning and wanting another before you even leave the tatt shop...lol The most painful one I got is on my neck below the hairline of a big beautiful butterfly with a tigers face in her wings...very cool and that HURT , but nothing like childbrth, but it did feel like the woman was jabbing those needles right through my neck...ouch!!! But it was well worth the pain and as soon as it was done I was wanting another!!!..
