I find the comment that tattoos "are generally for people with low self esteem" offensive and ignorant. I have several tattoos and low self esteem is not a problem for me. I am also not an attention seeker. Each of my tattoos commemorates an event that changed my life, from my marriage to the death of my father. Tattoos for me are an expression of who i am and i choose who sees them.

Touche'. I agree wholeheartedly. 4 out of 5 of mine are for loved ones. One is for my children , 2 is for the love of my life, and one a memorial for a family member that died in a tragic accident. I am very self confident and sure of myself. Tattoos are addictive for those of us who love them. Its no different than a vain woman who puts on gallons of makeup a day, its what she likes so who should judge her or us? Last I heard only GOD.

after years of my husband begging me to get a tattoo, I finally got our initials in a heart on my right hip as a surprise for him.it did not hurt at all. several years later I got my lower back one, that I think is a little low, he says not, and that one really hurt. my final tattoo is on the inside of my left ankle, a leaping white tiger, and that one hurt in a couple of places, especially the tail that wraps around the back of my ankle

I am a very professional, business woman who 6 years ago I got my one and only tattoo, My husband never liked tattoos and thought kind of like some of you. He thought it took away from a womans class. But one look at his initials on my lower back changed his mind set.It was the greatest gift I could've ever given him. My insight? This man has changed my life and even if we split up this is something that no body could ever take away from me. I absolutely love it. Oh yeah, afterwards, he sent the woman who did it Roses to say thanks!!

To justmyopinion.....what's sad is that you are beyond ignorant.....first off let me set something straight to you....i happen to have 3 tattoos, a college degree(and not from some community college either), and I sure as hell DONT live in a trailer park, not to mention the fact that I take care of my children WITHOUT welfare or childsupport. Yes everyone is entitled to their opinion..but just like your butthole....they all stink.......lock yourself in your cardboard box and grow some intelligence...

Last October, I got my first tattoo. I got it on the top of my foot. All I can say is "HOLY CRUD!!!" It was quite painful. The owner of the tattoo parlor walked by during my session and shuddered "Eck... foot tattoo." It's gotta be bad for a man with full sleeves to be grossed by a foot tattoo. I recommend a fattier spot.

This is response to bflower. I 'm a "older" ladie almost 50 and got my first tattoo 3yrs ago. I got my second 2yrs ago when my son was sent back overseas. A tribute to him and all the military personal. My daughter and I got ones that when we stand together they are awesome. I dont go around showing mine to everyone they are scared to me and it took me a very long time to get the first one. Will I ever get a 3rd probably not. The last one which is on the outside of my ankle just about did me in.

I had a tattoo done on the outside of my right ankle, and yes although it did hurt a little, I found it to be an erotic experience and would do it again in a heartbeat!

I am a woman who has an infatuation with body art,I also have 15 tattoos. The pain is very tolerable for me, not a problem. But I must say that the last one I got, was on my ribs, it took 3 hours, the most painfull one that I have gotten, and I have a high tolerance for pain. But my artist Mike O'Neal in FortCollins Colorado, was very patient and very light handed. He makes getting a tattoo enjoyable.I plan on getting much more, but not on my ribs, at least not for a while.Laurie

I'm pretty sure Angelina Jolie has around seventeen tattoos, so I'm thinking we can't stereotype people who have them as poor regardless of how you feel about their individual lifestyles. I don't have any, but I have many friends who do and they have wonderful families and incredible jobs. I don't think that anyone on this board knows enough to be making the kind of assumptions I've seen. Get some class...

Good morning I have a question regarding having a tattoo is it true if you have one you can not donate blood to any body I never have that in mind but now that I have one I really think of that so waht could i do because I have 4 children and that really concerns me.

    Thank You
    Maria Garcia (Los Angeles)

    • Posted By: chelleangel @ 02/08/2008 1:41:44 PM

You have to wait a year from the date of the tat to give blood. After that you're good.

      • Posted By: martyb56 @ 02/08/2008 1:52:24 PM

You can donate blood, one year after you got you tat...They will ask the questionits to prevent the spread of HEP C. and other diseases. Universal precautions as well as new needles are used now. Its up to you to make sure thats what there doing. Its ok to ask questions, most Artists dont take it personal and know its the law....

    • Posted By: j3636 @ 02/08/2008 1:47:57 PM

It's okay Maria. The waiting period after you get a tattoo before you can give blood is generally only about three months. In the past it was six months to a year but the last time I gave blood, the tech at the Red Cross said that the time had decreased. You will be able to be there for your children if they need you :)

    • Posted By: Panteragirl78 @ 02/08/2008 1:38:10 PM

Yes Maria you can give blood but there is a waiting period in between - ask any tattoo artist or someone with the Red Cross and they will tell you. Or just google it...

I have a small tatoo on the outside of my ankle and although it hurt a little, I found it to be an erotic experience. Don't know why, just did.

Don't really understand the hate some of you have for people with tattoos. Calling people who have them trashy and whatnot. Is there a dark rooted secret you are trying to hide? Was your daddy a piece of white trash covered in tattoos? Did he hit you? Did he touch you and tell you not to tell anyone? Did you have to stare at his tattoos while he sat on the couch shirtless drinking beer and watching He-Haw reruns? Is this why you assume everyone who has one is trashy?

A trailer park, get real ...... Lots of people have tats and do not live in trailer parks. They live in homes probably more expensive than yours. And for your info it is not cheap and disgusting, some have tats of names of loved ones who died fighting for your freedom, some have them as reminder of their heritage. So before you open your mouth and show your intelligence think about the subject you decide to comment on

To those that are bashing tattoos - some people have very nice ones for personal reasons. Most women who have posted here have their children's names - or something like that. I have a one on my shoulder - did not hurt - felt like someone was coloring on me with a crayon. My bil got one on his shoulder after drinking and it bled and hurt! I have a rose with my son's initial on the bottom of the stem. If it's tasteful and in the "right" spot - no one needs to know about it. MNo one knows about mine - unless I tell them.

I have three tattoos. One of them is very low down on my pubic bone. I am married and my husband doesn't really like tattoos but I still do. Even if the "horror" of having a name put on my bicep might seem dumb to others, it is part of who I was at the time and who I still am. Devoted and passionate. I find tattoos beautiful, cool, sexy, and interesting.

some people are so ignorrant!! if you don't like tattoos DON'T GET ONE!!!! your dislike of tattoos does not however give you the right to pass judgement upon others that do enjoy them. for example, my husband has over 10 tattoos and works closly with the public. He is known as a man with extreme intelligence and the very impresionable skill of being able to sell anything. I doubt very seriously that any of his customers know he as inked up his temple, because all of his ink is easily hidden. The thought that anyone would change there opinion of him on the fact that he is inked up truly irks me. You thought he was a class act before you knew he had tattoos and now you think he is trashy because you see his personal statement of art. well my one comment to them would be "you are a stupid hypocrite"!! face it people, tattoos are here to stay and wether you like it or not, 90% of todays generation has them. deal with it and quit thinking you are better than anyone because you can't accept it!

I got my tattoo last year at the age of 44. It's medium-sized, at the small of my back. i thought about it for two years before I did it, carefully researching designs and trying to decide what I wanted. I think tattoos can be a very spiritual thing, as it just suddenly came to me what I should have, and it was appropriate, meaningful and very personal. I designed it myself and the tattoo artist was very, very helpful and accomodating. As for the pain, it was a constant burning sensation. I handled it as best I could, and when it got to be too much, we would stop for a few moments. But the most amazing thing was that he suddenly hit an accupuncture spot, and my whole body just went limp. I was so relaxed I almost dozed off. It was a wonderful thing to have happen in the middle of a painful procedure. He thought it was very amusing and commented that it sometimes happens that way - he thought accupuncture would probably work well on me because of my body's reaction.

My mother - a very proper lady - was so thrilled at my tattoo that she wants one now. And I just finished designing my next one, and will probably get it this summer. I've decided on the back of my neck and I'm hoping it doesn't hurt too much. But it's something I want, and I'll put up with it.

It's a personal choice. People who rush into it because it's trendy or because they just want a decoration will probably end up unhappy. But someone who gives it a lot of thought, who wants to honor someone or something, or is making a spiritual commitment to their body shouldn't be slammed because of it.

Would you consider sending me a picture of your tattoo? I am also looking for something very spiritual for a tattoo for myself. I already have one on my hip of the chinese writing of angel. My address is upstatenurse@hotmail.com.

Someone on here said it takes "Serious balls" to get a tattoo. Please. Tattoos are generally for people with low self esteem. They think they need a picture drawn on their skin to be cool, or maybe it's to distract you from other flaws. I still think people should get them if they want to. I just don't think it qualifies as bravery. I just wish fat girls would stop getting their belly button pierced.

    • Posted By: beenthere @ 02/08/2008 1:49:28 PM

What sort of low self esteem do you have when you say such ugly things about other people, and notice their flaws. Is it because it makes you feel superior to them? Only folks who have problems with their self esteem go around criticizing and judging others.

    • Posted By: sacredhrt114 @ 02/08/2008 1:44:10 PM

I said it takes balls to make the kind of commitment that full sleeves or very visible tattooes take... not to get a tattoo, READ! Trust me, with idiots like this out there thinking your the devil reincarnate just because you have tattoos walking down the street can garner many a look... to deal with that and make that kind of statement is pretty bold and yes, it does take balls and VERY high self esteem! Maybe, we just like tattoos, and don't care what you think!? I'll do what I want to my body, it's none of your concern!

    • Posted By: Tattedup71 @ 02/08/2008 1:41:18 PM

I disagree with you about the low self esteem issue, I get them because I enjoy sitting there and having work done, my tattoo's are for me and me only, But I do agree with you about the fat girls getting their belly button pierced. That is too funny!
