I forgot one other little tidbit for those of you who might be getting your first one, the only time mine hurt is when I get them touched up so the color is still bright. Something about going over scar tissue..but its worth it to make them look new again.. Also my husband, bless his heart, had a list of woman he would never marry or date. Two items on his list were, woman with tattoos, and woman with children.. I had both and well we have been together for 7 years now, never a day apart.. He might not have liked them before and prefers I don't get another one, not even one with his name, but he mind has been unblocked as far as I'm concerned and he no longer looks at them on people in a negative way but has an open mind and looks at the art and sometimes he asks,, "what do you think they were thinking when they got that one" like I know because I have a few..lol......

I think my most painful tattoo was around my belly button. So much for the idea that fatty areas decrease pain. My first thought was "this may not have been such a good idea". Controlled breathing got me through it and 4 years later it is one of my most beautiful tats. As far as tats being trashy, well, I'm a 48 year old special education teacher with a MA. I've been married 25 years and have 4 children.... Viva la trashy!

My dad and uncles got tattoo's during WW2. As a kid, I was curious but as the years went by, the tattoo's became less clear, just black and blue blobs. Hard to define as to what they used to look like. A fresh tattoo looks good now but give it 20 years and they won't look as good. Women with tattoo's on their arms are a turn-off. Like dating a sailor who had a sex change operation. Still, I think it should be a persons free choice. Just remember they won't look that good in years to come.

It can actually look good for years to come if you take care of it properly while it's healing and also during the summer. Anyone that thinks people are going to be a saggy mass of blue wrinkles years later is pretty ignorant about tattoos.

Tattoos that are protected from the sun do not develop that blue blob look. Also, the dyes being used for tattoos now do not degrade like the old ones did. I have a tattoo done over twenty years ago that is still sharp, bright and clean looking because I've protected it from sun exposure. Same with skin. I've avoided tanning and the like, am 48, and most people think I'm in my late twenties.

I have both arms fully sleeved, i also have some work done on each leg and on my back, and I found the most painful place for me was on the inner bicep. It almost brought me to tears!

Anyone who puts down others for any reason has to have self esteem issues. Most people who have opinions about tattoos that are negative do not understand them. If you don't understand them keep your mouth shut. I know most of you internet chat room heros can's handle it when someone disagrees with you so I will leave the conversation with this: lets agree to disagree morons.

I disagree with the majority of this article. it really all depends on the person's tollerance, the piece they're getting and the artist since some people really dig in the needle and some have softer hands. i have a tat behind my ear and it was the least painful out of all of my 6. the most painful was probably the one on my back that took 6 hours and the band of stars around my ancle only because it crosses path with my tendant. i think this article gives the wrong perception of the sub-cultural world of tattoos and making it harder for todays society to accept them, which i feel is important. tattoos arent all so painful, theres a million things in life that are more painfull dont just pin it on body art, people have been doing it for hundreds of years. you need to earn your body art that's how it stays true to your heart. im sure removing body art hurts too but no one gets a tattoo to get it removed, and if you do than you dont deserve to get tattooed. that's like erasing someone's masterpiece.

Amen to that BEN DOVER and I'm a chick. How trashy!!

Another sad person. Too form an opionion of someone just by a tattoo. Alot of people use tattoo's to pay respect for a deceased parent, child, friend or loved one and you call them trash what does that say about you? To me it says you are a complete A$$!

I took my young son on trip to New Zealand. We were adopted by a native family. After we got back I got a large Tribal Arm Band. It took 8 hours. Now. every day I am reminded of a wonderful memory and great adventure. Uncomfortable? Sure, and worth every minute.

People that have tattoos are trashy?? What a dumba$$. By no means am I bragging but I make over $120K a year. I have a $600K house with two kids, wife, and a dog. The American Dream right? Oh my wife is a stay at home Mom who drives a Lexus and I drive a benz. I also have two full arms full of tattoos. Tattoos are the finer things in life to some of us. I know one thing, they sure cost more than your stupid glass of wine.

I assume that the closed minded people here that have posted negative comments regarding tattoos, does not realize how many PROFESSIONAL people have tattoos. When I say PROFESSIONAL, I mean Judges, Attorneys, Doctors, etc. Do you think that they are trashy or rednecks as well? Just because you don't appreciate the art work, does not mean you have to put every one else down. Some people may think you are a redneck because you go hunting or fishing, or driving a rusted out pickup truck. There is only ONE judge, in my book whose opinion matters, and that is NOT YOU!

The pigments they used oh, say 80 years ago weren't quite as advanced as the ones they use now... granted lines do still spread over time, the longevity of tattoos has greatly increased since WW2.

Also, sun exposure has a lot to do with shortening the "beautiful time" of a tattoo. I've had one on my ankle that seldom sees the sun, done in 1983. It has "spread" only slightly in all that time, and most people think it is new. The one I had done on my upper chest in 2002 is still bright and tight and people ask if I had it done recently. Keep them protected from the sun, and your tattoos will stay pretty for a very long time.

I am 45 and have a few tattoos. Got my first one when I was 40 (always wanted one but never knew what I wanted permanently!). I have one on the top of my left foot, A big one on my right ankle going up my shin and around the ankle and one on my lower back. None of these had the pain factor as childbirth! My tattoo artist was shocked with the first one I wanted it was the largest one and he said it would be painful, I didn't think any of them compared to natural chilbirth. I love my tattoos and am planning on getting a few more!

I have two tattoos and they both mean something to me. I might even get more. I am not trashy, common, cheap, nor do I flaunt them. You don't have to like tattoos and you shouldn't judge the people you see that have them. You might be surprised by how many people you know have them and you just don't know!

  • Posted By: Jezebel1765 @ 02/08/2008 1:29:25 PM

I've got 14 tattoos and 18 piercings. I'll definately be getting more. I found the most tender area for me was my side between my ribs and hip. I'm also a well respected member of my community and hold a management job for a major corporation. Guess this trashy redneck is doing well for herself!

First of all not all people with tattoos are rednecks and ben dover prob needs to bend over and take it in the ass if he feels like women with tattoos suck, he must like men...

    • Posted By: jrhdah @ 02/08/2008 1:28:50 PM

Amen to that Kim H,,amen to that...

I have a few tattoos myself. I have one on my lower back, one on my ankle and stars on my right rib cage. Out of the three I have the one on my lower back towards the sides was the most painful. My rib cage didn't hurt at all. I was very nervous and couldn't even hold the piece of paper still that the design was on. I asked my artist where it would hurt the most and he told me up around my boob so I had him start there first. However, to my surprise not much pain at all. It tickled more than anything from the vibration. I'm not little nor am I a big girl but honestly it was the only tattoo that did not hurt. I honestly think it hurts more over fatty tissue than directly over the bone. I also have been told that girls have a higher tolerance for pain that men but thats only hear say. I aslo think that if you're going to get a tattoo you need to make sure that its something that you will not regret later on seeing how they are permanent. However, being a girl with tattoos I think that there are some pretty trashy tattoos out there but then again that is on some pretty trashy too. I'm sure some people may think mine are trashy but thats their opinion. Sorry if I offended anyone but thats just an opinion. An we all know opinions are like *** everyones got one!
