It completely depends on the person. I am a 35yr old woman with many tats. I got one on the inside of my bicep (where the skin is very thin and ticklish) with some of my bouncer boys from the bar we all worked at. That particular area was EXTREMELY sensitive for them...and they all writhed with pain. For me...nothing...but in contrast...they all had tats on their biceps without incident. My biceps tat bruised and was tender for a couple weeks after.

It has everything to do with the person and their own personal physiology.

I have four tattoos, I had been wanting one for about 12 years, but couldn't build up the courage - terrified of needles. But, finally managed to build up the courage for my 30th birthday. Just over two years later I get another and then less than 2 months after that I get two in one day. I positively love it! The first was on the top of my wrist, the second on the inside of my other wrist, the third starts on the top of my foot but most is over the side of the foot and the last is on the back of my neck. I love each and every one!!! The one on the inside of my wrist hurt, but it wasn't unbearable although the pain lingered for an hour or two afterwards. The one on my foot was excruiciating, but the pain went away as soon as the tattoo was complete. The other two didn't really hurt at all. I thought about each tattoo for several months before getting inked. I can easily cover them if the occassion arises. I can't wait to get more - no regrets!!!

i HAVE 4 TATTOOS. THE MOST PAINFUL -- THE ANKLE. A SMALL ROSE (WHICH I HATE AND WAS "SOMEONE ELSE'S CHOICE!) IT FELT LIKE FALLING ON YOUR KNEES, WHILE SKIDDING AT THE SAME TIME AND THE HURTING PAINFUL FEELING - BUT NON-STOP. MY OTHER 3 ARE ALL ON MY BACK. ONE ON EACH SHOULDER BLADE AND ONE AT MY LOWER BACK (COMMONLY KNOWN AS A "TRAMP STAMP). THESE WERE ALL PICKED BY ME, ALL MODIFIED BY ME, AND ONE DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY BY ME FOR ME. THAT IS WHAT ONE SHOULD ALSO KEEP IN MIND WHEN CONTEMPLATING GETTING A TATTOO. NEVER, EVER GET ONE THAT IS SOMEONE ELSE'S CHOICE. ALWAYS LET IT BE YOURS.

I agree with the top of the foot..I have more than one tatoo , but I must say the top of the foot ( wich took 3 hrs to get it done ) ouch ! The end result is beautiful ..so it was worth the pain :)

I have several tattoos in various places and I can't say that they hurt that bad. It's totally a mind thing. It's all on how well you can tolerate pain. I recently got a tattoo on my neck and to my surprise it wasn't as painful as I thought. The artist and I were having a conversation and before I knew it he was done.

I agree with Lante. My sisters and I recently got a tattoo on our right foot and none of us thought it hurt...if anything we all thought it tickled a bit. But we were getting it in honor of our dad (who had his right foot amputated because of a genetic condition three years ago), so maybe the meaning of it is what made it not hurt.

I have tattoos on my shin and ankle and I have to say that the pain is worst just off the bone. When I've gotten tattooed right over a bone it's just an intense vibration with a little pressure. But move a few milimeters off and *that's* where it hurts. I also don't recommend getting your Achilles heel tattooed, that's the most painful spot I've found (yet).

I have 8 tats over various parts of my body and I will have to say- the middle of my posterior neck was the most painful- and the touch-up when I added more ink to the design was even worse- but, oh so worth it!!!

I was 46 when I got my first tattoo - a pair of eighth notes right in the middle of my chest. I'm a musician. It hurt more than my 2 piercings! Even so, I'm proud of it, and I'd do it again. My second tattoo is an Olde English B on my right upper arm to honor my favorite baseball team, the Red Sox.. This one hardly hurt at all, was more of an annoying itch. In both cases I thought long and hard about what I was getting and where I wanted them. I'm looking to add some adornment to the B in the not-too-distant future. I agree with the 2 main points of the article, that 1) pain is subjective and individual to different people, and 2) you really need to consider what you're getting and where you're getting it and not get a tattoo on impulse.

I just had my ribs done and it definitely hurt far worse than any other spot I have had done. Inside of the arm, shoulder blades, legs, forearms, none of that really fazed me, my ribs were killer

This arrticle is misleading. I have several tattoos in various places and none of them hurt. It's a mind thing and also how well you can tolerate pain. I recently got a tattoo on my neck and I was scared that it would hurt and to my surprise the tattoo artist and I were having a conversation and before you know it it was over. The average tattoo does not take take hours unless you're getting something very large or very afraid and hesitant.

I got my right ankle done on the outside where the ball of your ankle is and believe me I enjoy tattoos but since that one I haven't even had the desire to finish it....that was the worst pain I have endured with any of my tattoos, and I have a huge 5 X 6 one on my lower back and that didn't even hurt compared to my foot.........

I also believe it depends on the person. I have one on my ankle and that wasn't painful at all. I also have one one my shoulder blade, and that one hurt a tad more towards the outter part of my shoulder than my ankle. So this article wouldn't be that much helpful for those considering a tattoo.

My most painful tattoo by far was on the inside of my arm where my upper arm and forearm meet (the area opposite your elbow). Ihave sat through an 8 hour session before with know problem on my upper arm and shoulder area but after about 2 hours on the inside of my arm I wanted to call it quits but i endured and I'm very pleased I did. The tattoo was in memory of my recently deceased mother so well worth it but needless to say I dont believe I'll be opting for the same spot on the other arm anytime soon.

Headlemk, you are never too old to get a tattoo. I got my first one at age 46 after my husband of 28 yrs passed away. I had always wanted one but also knew it would be a permanent thing and didn't want to put something on my body I would regret later in life. I have a rose with my husbands name on it and the date we were married. Since then I've had a few other smaller tatts done of things that were special to our relationship. This is artwork I can proudly live with the rest of my life.

I myself have several tattos and plan for more. I can not say that any one of my tats hurt worse that the others. But I have heard that ankles near the boney area is painful. To me plan for it to be painful no matter were you put it.
